Pavel Bure? $10 million. Bobby Holik? $9.6 million. Alexei Kovalev? $4.6 million. Darius Kasparaitis? $4.1 million. Brian Leetch? $9.68 million. Petr Nedved? $4.55 million. The response from a vast number of NHL general managers when the overspending New York Rangers with the $80 payroll are eliminated from the playoffs for a franchise-record sixth straight season? Priceless.

Well, it's the closest she's ever come to humor...

Come Towards the Light, Rangers
Since last we spoke, Rangers lose to Atlanta in OT, 4-3, and tie the Islanders, 2-2. Isles need all of two points to eliminate the Rangers from the playoffs, six straight seasons without the postseason. Do they have a chance? Theoretically. But theoretically I also have a chance of winning the lottery on the same day that Jennifer Garner lifts the restraining order and finally gives in to my repeated requests to run away to Moosejaw and bear me six healthy male children upon which the Rangers Stanley Cup future will be founded in 2028. So we're done. I'm not bitter or anything. In the end a warm healing light comes over you, and you start to see old friends like grandma, Esa Tikkanen and Shane Churla.
Not that a person could ever get tired of Dude references or Lebowski quotes, but at some point it starts to undermine the season that Mike Dunham has had. GAA of 2.29 and .923 SV%, and an above .500 winning percentage despite an awful start with Nashville and having to play through the Injury Daze. If the Rangers played to expectation, this Dude would be getting Vezina votes. So don't cut the hair this summer, Dude, and do whatever you need to do to keep, um, limber: White Russians, bowling, driving around, Credence, coitus, the occasional acid flashback--it's all good. Dan Blackburn? Spend the summer asking your neighbors how to get to Carnegie Hall.

OK, so I may have said throughout the course of the season that the Rangers would win the Eastern Conference, Eric Lindros would be a fantasy MVP, Radek Dvorak could score 30 goals again and Ronald Petrovicky was a sleeper. Obviously I goofed. But what do you expect from me? I have a fantasy team that's going to finish with 12 freakin' points. Anyway, in true broken-clock fashion, my prediction that the struggling Rangers stars would turn things around after the pressure of success was removed from their feeble shoulders has partly come true: Alex Kovalev has 4 goals in 3 games, arguably the four most important clutch goals ever scored that are now rendered completely meaningless because they occurred about one week too late. I can't believe I'm still a Rangers fan at this point.

What to say about Brian Leetch? His play over the past month might just be a microcosm his past six seasons: awesome and incredible feats of individual effort designed to inspire his teammates, at which he fails miserably. What ever the future may hold for him, some team is going to get one hell of a hockey player next season. Did I just sound like Larry King there? Hey gang, the way I see it, tripping a guy should be called a penalty. The more I think about it, Wayne Gretzky was one heck of a player. John Ogrodnick was one class act. When I think of great coaches, the first name that comes to mind is Ron Smith. No one made more of an impact in the NHL over the past 50 years than Willie Huber.

Next Game = Friday vs. Devils
Is anyone else tired? I'm exhausted at this point. Not tired in a good sense, mostly tired in the I-just-want-to-sleep-for-the-next-five-months sense. The last few games have been both exhilarating and frustrating, entertaining and depressing--I feel like I'm dating Zelda Fitzgerald or Winona Ryder. I'd like to put my head through a plate-glass window. I think I can bend carbon rods with my mind. I gave myself a tattoo last night with a melted crayon and a rusty tuna-can lid. Anyway, I'll give this team Last Rites sometime over the weekend. Thanks to everyone that stuck around until this point. I need to go lie down.

That guy cracks me up! Now that is true suffering. I'll take my one year of hell over his six years anyday.

That is true...a lot of us have become die-hards because of last year...so that part has been easy...and I know a lot of you guys have endured the crummy seasons as well... I can relate to the Rangers' fans cause I have been a Pack fan my entire life...we have had some stinking years in football and basketball..and I can tell you it takes a lot to stick with it...but I have and always will..and I will always stick with the Canes too..not matter what!

Hope I didn't go OT!
