View Full Version : Another professor spills his anti-American thoughts

I saw this on Fox News Channel last night. A professor from Columbia University (I'm pretty sure it was Columbia, if not, it was another Ivy League school) told one of his students that the only "true heroes" were the ones who defeat the US Army and that he wished "a thousand Mogadishus" on the United States.
For those of you who don't know, Mogadishu is the Somalian city that the US armed forces went into in the early 1990s to remove a violent warlord. The operation resulted in chaos, and American soldiers were dragged through the streets and slaughtered. Watch the movie Black Hawk Down to see a really good portrayal of the battles.
It sickens me that scumbags like that are able to live and work freely here and get a job as prestigious as that. He has gotten many well-deserved death threats, and now he has to fear for his life.
He deserves it. He deserves whatever he gets. He should go ahead and leave the country and go live in some "wonderful" anti-American nation such as Syria and see how he likes it there.
Does anyone else think he should be forced to leave the country?
God Bless America.

It was Columbia--and I remind you that the freedom afforded to us in this country protects his right to speak out no matter how much others disagree (and it protects the rights of others to say that he needs to put down the crackpipe).
He has the right to say what's on his mind as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others or present a direct threat to others, and he should not be barred from seeking gainful employment just because he voices an unpopular (and crack-smoking, IMO) viewpoint.
He has gotten many well-deserved death threats, and now he has to fear for his life.
He deserves it. He deserves whatever he gets.
Are you serious?
I'm sorry, when did we suddenly move to pre-war Iraq? Last time I checked, we lived in a land where even those with unpopular viewpoints were guaranteed at least a reasonable expectation that they could voice those viewpoints without having to fear bodily harm.
Silly me, I thought this was America. Land of the free, and all that.

Well yes it is. The guy is on crack, and I hope that Columbia University at the very least censures(1) him for or otherwise makes it clear that his comments are his own and not reflective of anyone else at the school.
But he doesn't deserve death threats, nor does he deserve to be harmed for his comments.
(1)censure (as defined by Merriam-Webster):
1 : a judgment involving condemnation
2 archaic : OPINION, JUDGMENT
3 : the act of blaming or condemning sternly
4 : an official reprimand

Yeah, i understand the whole freedom of speech thing. Shame the only reason he has that freedom is that a large number of the US military died to give him that freedom.
Perhaps he'd like to volunteer for the first round of Mogadishu?

OK then, we're on much the same page.
I apologize to you all if I come across as a little strident in my postings on stuff like this--I'm an ardent defender of civil liberties, and it just bothers me when I see anything that suggests to me that folks with viewpoints that aren't popular should be silenced. I'd rather see those unpopular viewpoints out in the open where people can examine them and accept or reject them as they will (which is what's happening with goombah prof--his viewpoint is out in the open and it's being pretty soundly rejected).
This is a great country whose constitution guarantees its people freedoms that a lot of people elsewhere don't have (and I think that folks in this country take a lot of those freedoms for granted--which is another thing that pains me), and I tend to get a little irritated when I see those freedoms eroded or ignored.
's all good. Go us. :)

Oregon Law Would Jail War Protesters as Terrorists
Reuters

By Lee Douglas
PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuters) - An Oregon anti-terrorism bill would jail street-blocking protesters for at least 25 years in a thinly veiled effort to discourage anti-war demonstrations, critics say.
The bill has met strong opposition but lawmakers still expect a debate on the definition of terrorism and the value of free speech before a vote by the state senate judiciary committee, whose Chairman, Republican Senator John Minnis, wrote the proposed legislation.
Dubbed Senate Bill 742, it identifies a terrorist as a person who "plans or participates in an act that is intended, by at least one of its participants, to disrupt" business, transportation, schools, government, or free assembly.
The bill's few public supporters say police need stronger laws to break up protests that have created havoc in cities like Portland, where thousands of people have marched and demonstrated against war in Iraq since last fall.
"We need some additional tools to control protests that shut down the city," said Lars Larson, a conservative radio talk show host who has aggressively stumped for the bill.
Larson said protesters should be protected by free speech laws, but not given free reign to hold up ambulances or frighten people out of their daily routines, adding that police and the court system could be trusted to see the difference.
"Right now a group of people can get together and go downtown and block a freeway," Larson said. "You need a tool to deal with that."
The bill contains automatic sentences of 25 years to life for the crime of terrorism.
Critics of the bill say its language is so vague it erodes basic freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism under an extremely broad definition.
"Under the original version (terrorism) meant essentially a food fight," said Andrea Meyer of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which opposes the bill.
Police unions and minority groups also oppose the bill for fear it could have a chilling effect on relations between police and poor people, minorities, children and "vulnerable" populations.
Legislators say the bill stands little chance of passage.
"I just don't think this bill is ever going to get out of committee," said Democratic Senator Vicki Walker, one of four members on the six-person panel who have said they oppose the legislation.

Well hopefully (and almost certainly) this bill won't go anywhere. It's just stupid. We've got freedom of speech and noone should be labelled as a terrorist for expressing their thoughts.

I did see that article, crazy, don't think it would EVER get passed. I also saw this woman on tv last night from San Fran who was upset because police officers had on flag bandannas. She saw them working at an anti-war rally & felt it was a "threat". Ok, you can be anti-war, but since when is the flag a threat?

it identifies a terrorist as a person who "plans or participates in an act that is intended, by at least one of its participants, to disrupt" business, transportation, schools, government, or free assembly.
Uh....isn't that the same free assembly right that guarantees you the right to protest in the streets if you want?
The fact that this law is even being proposed is extremely disturbing to me.
Anyone heard what nationality the professor from Columbia is? Just curious.

I'm with you mo... I'll try to contain myself.
but that dude does deserve a SOUND beating.
I'm sorry, but using your freedom of speech to basically wish the death of those that provide you that freedom deserves everything he gets, and more.
yes, by all means voice your opinions. but, in a time of war, saying something like that... I'd Pray that he gets more than a simple tongue-lashing from his superior.
thing is, our civil rights are going out the window.. slowly, and not so slowly in some cases. there is no more privacy. their main goal is to not allow guns. when that happens, the gov't will have free reign to do whatever they want. so yes, USE your free speach. But- if I'm near you and you unload some bullsh*t about the only real heroes are those that kill/torture OUR troops.
You'll have a goddamn boot on your neck faster than you can say RUN. http://tridead.net/canes/images/smilies/ranting.gif

as for that bill.. it's unbelievable. go into a restaraunt and complain that there's a bug in your food, you're disrutping their business. terrorist. 25 years. let some murderers back out on the streets folks, gotta make room for these "terrorists".

It shouldn't fall under terrorism. But it should be illegal to block streets like that. If you're against the war or anything, fine. Protest all you want on the sides of streets or in front of buildings or whatever, but don't keep other people, some of which undoubtedly agree with you, from getting to their jobs and other obligations.
Just my thoughts on that.

Some more idioacy from him:
De Genova, also called for the defeat of U.S. forces in Iraq and said Americans who call themselves "patriots" are white supremacists.
____________
During a pro-Palestinian sit-in in the April of last year, he stated at an open microphone, "The heritage of the victims of the Holocaust belongs to the Palestinian people. The state of Israel has no legitimate claim to the heritage of the Holocaust. The heritage of the oppressed belongs to the oppressed--not the oppressor."

And I'm not generally on board with telling anyone they should "love it or leave it" but you know what? In this case I make an exception! Get the hell out if you hate it so damn much!

Personally I think he should be allowed to stay--we need somebody to point and laugh at, after all.
The guy is so obviously delusional that it's just laughable.

speaking of protests in the streets.......can someone explain to me how blocking traffic helps your cause whatever that cause may be? how does making me late to work, late to an appointment, late to get home, late to pick someone up, late to.........make me more sensitive to your cause.
it would make me reconsider my support for the cause even if I believed in it cause I would be SO mad at the inconsiderate, self absorbed SOB that made me late  but then maybe the rest of you aren't as easily annoyed in traffic as I am ;)
and that professor has the right to his opinion and the right to hear the opinions of those that who oppose him. he should be allowed to stay (as if that's my call), but why would he want to. I'd think he couldn't get out fast enough.
and a good beating wouldn't hurt.........much or for long!
