View Full Version : RBC Ushers (channeling JHardman)

I'll start by saying we've got a wonderfully pleasant batch of ushers at the RBC center. Every single one of them wished a safe drive and a pleasant evening on the way home tonight.

BUT, I'm going to contact my ticket rep and find out who their ring leader is.

I can forgive a big batch of folks that stream in after the Nat'l anthem because they've been held up during the song itself and have to rush to their seats before face off (still ticks me off, but I can live with it).

BUT, I can't count the number of times people straggled into the section after play began and wandered into the rows in front of us, causing them to stand, causing us to stand, and so on. At one point, there were people asking the people in front of me during play, if anyone had been sitting in the seats adjascent with them. When they finally decided that it must indeed be their seats they just trucked on in, causing the people in front to stand, causing us to stand, etc.

I bet something like this happened 10 times tonight. I would like my very pleasant ushers to cut them off about 5 seconds before the face off - it takes people a LOT longer to get settled than that.

(and while I'm complaining, I really, really wish people didn't feel compelled to complaing loudly the whole entire game about how the team plays, when Jessie should fight, when he shouldn't. Tell your girlfriend/wife/whatever, but the people 3 rows down DON'T GIVE A RIP about your opinion.)

Thank you. :D

Edited to add: Perhaps a large crowd throws them off on figuring out when to put up the big stop sign.

you must sit near me! there is a man directly behind me somewhere who thinks he is so devastatingly clever that it would be a real shame if everyone within 10 rows of him didn't hear his every thought.

while we're complaining, some woman, never seen her before and not the regular STH who sits in front of me, came in more than halfway through the first period. I swear this next part is absolutely true......sat in her chair and shoved it backed onto my knees, propped her feet on the seat in front of her and slumped down in the seat. got out her cell phone and her hand lotion. rammed her seatback into my knees again and when I pushed back, she turned to look at me. that was my cue to apologize for having legs. they didn't come back till mid-way through the 2nd period and then left with 10 minutes to go in the game. can't wait to see the STH who sits there and ask him why he thought those people would enjoy a hockey game. her boyfriend/husband/driver/beer toter was very nice. oh, and we when scored, she couldn't be bothered to get up and clapped like she was at the ballet. I was most unhappy about the whole thing

now I feel better. the constant motion has become such a part of my section that I try to just block it out, or I'll become a serial killer while at a hockey game.

it was especially bad for us (in 324) tonight as well....

on a related note, let me complain about fans who gripe when you leave your seats DURING THE INTERMISSION. my seat is in the very center of the row and i NEVER get up during a game, and i rarely get up during intermissions yet people feel the need to say things like "can't you go around to the other side" (when there are just as many people on the other side). also, is it so hard to STAND so that we can get by easier? people think that just because a person is relatively small that it's easy for them to climb around your feet and knees when moving past -- IT'S NOT, and i would prefer not to fall and roll all the way down to row A, or heaven forbid right off the third deck...

I hate when people stand in front of us when play starts...here is Philly people are not allowed to walk back to their seats during play if they leave and come back they must wait till a stoppage of play until they can walk back to there seats...it is a good idea because it does kinda eliminate people standing in front of you

Manda, folks like that need a good ole popping in the back of the head, and God forbid if you were to fall - I think I would have to find them and handle it myself....(yes, a little peturbed tonight also)...

Sorry you guys seemed to have sat around every a**hole in Wake Co. and made the game even harder (like the loss wasnt bad enough)

HOpe you guys have a wonderful rest of the weekend!!! By God, yall deserve it!!

I was in section 118 sitting in row R and like a line of 10 people came down and it took them FOREVER to sit down. I dunno if anyone was in that section...but I had a white jersey on with American Flag and ESA patch on it. and my friend had his face painted...but yes, we were very very very annoyed by this!

They are supposed to do that SJF - they even have a hand held stop sign. Problem is that they let people enter the section right up until the puck drops, even if they have to go 10 rows up/down and 10 seats in or whatever.

Maybe the hurry up face offs aren't the greatest.

We're fortunate enough that NO ONE(well except for the majority of 2nd lvl and all of the 1st ;)) can sit in front of us. That being said, the ushers near us(332) never stop people except right before the opening face off. This bothers me not because people are blocking my view but because people constantly run into my wheelchair. It gets very old. I also know you ushers are very nice for the most part but moving people or asking me if the seats to the side of me are taken or not, then ushering people to sit there when the puck is in play is not good. /whine/

Well the family behind me..although they cheered for the Canes really hard... while they were there they spilled two drinks and they had to come down and mop them up while I crawled around not to block a view, they got peanuts all over my jacket and they continuously hit me in the head with the car flag they brought in..

On a brighter note, the little boy that sits in front of us.. probably 12.. he is a hoot.. tonight they made a bad call and right in front of his mom, he said... HEY REF, DOES YOUR WIFE KNOW YOU ARE SCREWING US?? I thought his mom would faint.. and she popped him in the face. I bet he will be grounded for a month.. while I laughed my ass off!! :D

Please don't blame me for any problems tonight. I was out of harm's way at the entrance to the deck.

Thanking every person that comes by really does a number on my throat.

Besides, I'm switching departments in Feb anyway.

I get a prop in the thread title....guess I've beaten this horse a bit, huh? (runs defibrillator out to help revive dead horse)

Well, I've said many times that I think the ushers are getting very bad instruction from somewhere because the actions are deliberate. I don't have a problem with the individual people at all, and carry on many pleasant conversations with the ushers. They have a job to do.

And suamme...I wish I could put a pin on myself somewhere telling you to save the voice for me. I think that's a pointless exercise for a hockey crowd, but I know you are supposed to do that and I totally respect that. If I knew who you were, I'd shake your hand and say thanks for doing your job.

But I totally agree - the ushers get a big fat F in my book for this year, and I agree it goes back to the ringleader. If I didn't move practically every game, it would be far worse. I gave my tickets up last night and the chief complaint I heard back was that the people in my seats couldn't see the game well because people were always walking up and down the aisles in front of them during play.

Thanks for channeling me....back to regular programming. Aaaaahhhhhmmmmm....

I thought that was you! I was atypically late going in after every period so I didn't have a chance to speak to you, but I will next time!

We run into this Alllll the time. We never leave during play but we always leave as soon as intermission starts each period. I realize you are too sweet for this, but here is what I do.. if the people stand so I can try to get by, I am very careful to not step on their feet, purses, drinks, etc. However if they just look at me with a nasty look and refuse to move, I can't help but step on their toes as I try to get by.. After that, they always get up to let me by  Guyute is taller and broader than most of our hockey team, I am not sure how people expect him to get through a 2" space

I think Hyena hit my worst peeve too. Standing up is bad enough, but I have no problem yelling DOWN IN FRONT!!!! And giving them a "YES I have a F'ing problem. SIT DOWN" look. It's almost enjoyable some nights.

But people who can't be bothered to get the hell out of the way when you're trying to get by are the worst (and we only do this at intermissions). And I do the same as shell. I'll try to avoid them, but if all they'll do is turn halfway sideways in their seat to let my 6'2" 205lb frame through, I will not lightly step on a foot. I'll smash that bish. I'll kick their purse out of the way. If they pull one of those moves where they stand up, but don't back up into their seat (yes, that helps, thanks a lot), I'll gladly throw a shoulder or an elbow to clear my path.

and btw- yes I think the people milling around during play are a direct result of quicker faceoffs. bad idea.

I agree about people walking down to their seats when the puck is in motion. I can not believe how many people do it. One problem later in the game is that there may not be an usher up there. The other day when I was at the game, someone was gong around asking the ushers if they wanted to go home early. I have noticed a lack of ushers at certain sections all year.

Yeah, it seems that they're always wanting as many people as possible to go home early. I think I may know why there's a problem, but I'll keep my mouth shut as to why.... ( I want to keep my job )

if your seats are down by the glass, chances are it doesn't matter if you
start down between plays, you won't make it all the way down before the
play begins again. (unless you absolutely fly).......so what I do is sit on
the steps when play begins and wait for it to end again. Alot of people
don't know that is what you should do.

but one thing that kind of bothered me yesterday was a young mom and
her 5 year old. They came all the way from Charlotte to see the game.
All the sudden her son has to go to the bathroom NOW!!!....she tries to
make it out and someone told her she had to wait. There are just some
things that can't wait.

and Guy, your post was hilarious!

What I hate is the parent with the toddler who decides to let Junior take his sweet little toddler time in walking up or down the steps into the section. They'll be in front of me for two whole minutes! Play is on! Pick the kid up and move your a*s!

During the conference finals in 2002, my mother, who sits in 103, got hit with a puck in the head. I was in 114 and could see that she was bleeding & the ushers had to help her out. Well, I immediately jump up and try to get over there (we were all the way at the end) and the people in my row were saying "Wait till stoppage". I finally had to get rude & say "that was my mother, idiots". They moved pretty quick!!

the problem is that there is so much movement during play, that when someone has a legitimate reason to move during play, they don't get much understanding. there are always reasons people really need to move during play. unfortunately, the ones who just have to get out with 30 seconds left to get to the front of the beer line make us all impatient with everyone else.

Thanks guys. It was very scary. She got stitches & everything. I'm happy we have nets, but that still doesn't protect her in center ice!
