View Full Version : Avs/Coyotes game recap
Sorry for the delay here, but this week has been a bit crazy. I finally have the time to slack on a Friday afternoon and tell you all about the Colorado-Phoenix game that we got to attend last Saturday in Colorado.
First of all, their stadium kicks ass. Huge, glass atrium, much better food selection, cushy seats even in the rafters. And it was their 386th consecutive sellout. Oh, and the location of the stadium is cool... not too far from a nice downtown area, and there were a couple of bars right across the street. Not like the totally isolated RBCC.
The game itself was awesome... since the Avs beat the Coyotes 6-1, we got to see a lot of scoring. They had a lot of extemporaneous mess like we do (t-shirt throwing, jumbotron stuff, etc.). Also, their intermission stuff was these weird blow-up zoo animals that were supposed to be "Zooperstars"... took names like Gretzy and Shaq and made them into animal names. Reeeealllly cheesy, and the people around us agreed.
Most everyone was pretty nice to us, wearing our Canes jerseys, but most people didn't know what team was on our jerseys (didn't recognize the logo). We had a couple people call us "the enemy" (I guess thinking we were wearing Phoenix jerseys?) until we explained that we live in NC, this is our team (the Carolina Hurricanes), and we *like* the Avs. Then they were really friendly. I did get an awful lot of strange looks headed my way when going out to the restroom and such. We didn't see many Coyote fans, maybe one or two... most people were wearing Avs paraphenilia.
The guy sitting in front of me was from Hartford, so he did know the Canes. He and I had a discussion about ticket prices, where I told him that my much better center ice balcony seats (we were sitting in the upper corner) were $22 rather than the $56 that we paid in Colorado. He mentioned that we didn't have a Cup, but I pointed out that we went further than his team did last year, and he conceded the point. :) Also, their STH don't get any discount off face value.
Anyhow, I definitely recommend going to see a game in another team's stadium if you get the chance. We saw a Pens game in Pgh earlier in the year, and my fiance saw a Sharks game in San Jose... it gives you a different perspective on things. There are things about our stadium I wouldn't change (we are *definitely* louder at the RBCC than any of the stadiums either of us have seen this year, and I love the prices and the tailgating), but there are other things that would be nice (bars close to the arena, sellouts, giveaways...).
So that's my recap... sorry it is delayed and such a long ramble!

Cool, Kat! Glad you got to see the Avs w/my boy live & in person. Sounds like an experience I may have to attempt myself sometime next season! :spin: :D

Neither does Atlanta but that doesn't stop them from charging $110 for center ice tickets as opposed to our $85 (I think that's regular price). :p I think we have pretty good prices compared to most arenas, Cup winners or not.

Kat, thanks for the report. How much, if any, snow was on the ground? And, most importantly, give us an update on our man, Bates. Any comments from the Avs fans? Did he look good playing? Etc.

No snow on the ground, although there were some flurries both Friday and Saturday.
Bates looked good... he was on the ice for at least one of the goals, and they did a little focus thingy on him during the warmups. No-one mentioned him to us, though... like I said, I am not sure that anyone of them either knew of the Hurricanes or knew that the logo on our jerseys was the Hurricanes logo. Not all that surprising, I guess, since there are teams in the Western conference that I might not recognize on first glance... they only see us every other year, after all, and we sure aren't plastered all over the TV or websites when hockey is mentioned. Although since we did make it to the finals, you would think that they would know more about us. Oh well.

I'm guessing that, in their mind, the play-offs were over once the Avalanche went down. "You mean people were still playing? What on earth for?" ;)
Thanks for the report Kat! Sounds like fun. We really gotta get to an away game next year.

thanks kat... always wanted to go to a game there. one of the coolest looking hockey arenas, imo. I love the digital banner inbetween levels that just marquees their colors around the arena... I want one of those :D
their sellout streak is one of the most impressive fan-type-stats I've ever seen. closing in on 400. damn.

Sounds great Kat. Glad you had a good time.
I have a friend who is thinking of moving to Denver. I've already told her I'll call her when the schedule comes out and if the Canes are coming to Denver, so am I!

And it was their 386th consecutive sellout.
Holy cow!!!
Not like the totally isolated RBCC.
I still don't understand why they couldn't have put it maybe a LITTLE closer to the rest of civilization...
Anywho, great rundown of the game and arena... Sounds like fun!

actually, I think it's a great location in regards to how spread out the triangle is. They just need to build up around it (boy I don't say that much!)

I agree with Shell. And if you think about it, had they put it much closer to downtown Raleigh....the traffic would be pretty nasty.

I agree that the RBCC is in a good location in terms of where it is within the Triangle... just wish that there were a few bars around close by to hit before/after the game. But then again, finding anyplace that stays open past like 9PM here on a weekday is rather difficult, unless you are smack in the middle of Raleigh or Chapel Hill... sigh.

true 'nuff.. though even if there were bars, I wouldn't go.. I'd rather drink in the lot with fellow canes fans/friends (for store prices instead of bar prices, and no tipping). Plus, if I have to pay $7 for my parking spot, I want to enjoy it LOL

aren't they discussing hotels, restaurants and shops in that open space? I know they want to build up the area so the RBC will be considered for more use. and we need additional 4 and 5 star hotel space for the NHL draft and so other groups would be interested in the area too. and they are voting on building a new convention center too. sounds like big changes are in store.

I think we're spoiled here with our cheap tix and parking. Trying paying 25 for parking at MCI in DC. 25 dollars!! We took the metro the couple games we went to. 7 is a steal.

talkingcanes- yes, part of the deal in order to get the All-Star game here was that there needs to be more/some restaraunts and hotels very close by. I think we'll start seeing a lot of construction around that area real soon.

In the Metro section (or whatever weird name the N and O gives it), a few weeks ago, I saw an article that said they were planning MAJOR development around there... Hotels, restaurants, perhaps office buildings, etc., all in the next few years.
