I know this is pretty random, and some of them are like comparing apples to oranges, but who is your favorite musical group or solo artist from NC? Not necesarily the most popular, but which one do YOU enjoy most?

Whiskeytown (Ryan Adams' old band) and Jim Lauderdale probably tie for me.

My vote went to the Ben Folds Five...Whatever and Ever Amen is easily one of the best albums from the 90's, and one I still find myself listening to quite a bit.

WAEA and The Unauthorized Biography of Rheinhold Messner have permanent slots in my car's CD player. They're one of my all time favorite bands. I don't think they have a song that I don't like. Your Redneck Past is my current favorite song of theirs. He's a piano god, and their tunes are so catchy it's scary.

It's very safe to say that Ben Folds is right on up there with Billy Joel and Elton John. As a matter of fact, I think it would be cool if Elton and Mr. Joel had another Face To Face tour, and Ben Folds guest appeared for a song or two.

You know an artist/group is good when even their most overplayed singles never get tiresome...this definitely applies to the BFF. I know I've heard "Brick" and "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" a gazillion times, but I will never get sick of them.

Clay Aiken!
Just kidding. It's hard to beat Ben Folds...Joel/John are great comparasons to the type of music he plays...and it's all great.
It's just Ben Folds now, right? The band fell apart, or is it just a solo career?

My personal fave: "Rockin' the Suburbs." :D

Mine is Athenaeum... anybody heard of 'em? The original three members were together as "Athenaeum" since they were in High School together in Greensboro.

I voted for Ben Folds because that spoken-word song he did with the Shatner is leg-slapping hilarious.

This thread made me throw on some JT ... too bad I only have Greatest Hits 2 here at work, b/c GH1 is a CLASSIC.

BTW, Taylor's great live, too ... quite a dry, funny sense of humor, too.

Hard to choose. I picked Coltrane over Monk and Taylor

I'm woulda expected a James Taylor vote of you, since he does have a song "Only A Dream In Rio."

YES! Somebody else has heard it! :)

I do enjoy Ben Folds a great deal, but I voted for James Taylor.

While I have voted for and praised Ben Folds...you can't deny that Taylor is one of the best easy listening/soft rock artists ever. There is of course the great "Carolina On My Mind", along with the great cover of "How Sweet It Is". And you gotta mention the song that earned Taylor his name on the Morgan Creek bridge outside of Chapel Hill, "Copperline".

It would be curious to know how JT classifies his music, perhaps he doesn't. But I would say "folk" more than anything else.

Easy Listening/Soft rock seems too close to muzak or something.

And I'm with JH on the voting. ;)
