View Full Version : Retiring numbers

The Rangers are going to retire Mike Richter's number, and I'm wondering .... why? Sure, the guy was their goalie for a long time, but his GAA average is on the bad side of 2 and is save save percentage is just more than .900. He's never been better than 2.57 GAA.
Just to make a comparison, if there hadn't been a falling out last year, would we even consider retiring Archie's number? I think retiring a marginal player's number tarnishes the numbers that already hang or will rightfully hang in each team's rafters. Now Brian Leetch and Mark Messier will have to hang next to Richter — something that just shouldn't happen.
The only argument one can make, IMO, is that Richter's is the greatest American-born goalie ... but that's like saying Mario Elie is the best basketball player to come out of American International College — who else can you compare him to? When John Vanbiesbrouck and Tom Barrasso are your biggest competition, it's not saying much.
So, yes or no, if you were the Rangers would you retire Richter's number?

I don't really think you can compare Irbe and Richter like that.
Richter played his entire career as a Ranger and won a Stanley cup. Irbe has bounced from team to team signing FA contracts and had one good run at the Stanley Cup.
Richter also lead the US to the World Cup and played for the U.S. team that won the silver medal in the 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake City. He also was a member of the 1998 team that played in Nagano, Japan. A three-time All-Star, Richter was also MVP of the 1994 NHL All-Star game. Irbe's accomplishments don't necesarily compare that well, do they?
Yes, as a non-Ranger fan, I can see how you might not consider Richter worthy of having his number retired, but you have to also consider the impact (or in your opinion, the lack thereof) that he has had on not only the record books, but also to the Rangers, for whom he WAS the franchise, and to US hockey (remember, I'm Canadian). For THAT, I believe he IS truly deserving of this honour and respect.

Again, though, how does he compare in the pantheon of Rangers hockey with someone like Brian Leetch or Adam Graves (who I think were the real blood and guts of the franchise)? Those guys were much more revered than Richter.
Clearly, the Irbe comparison was a reach ... but if he stuck around and played a few more seasons here, the comparison may be valid. Maybe Ron Hextall is a better comparison (statistically).
All of the accomplishments you mentioned were team accomplishments, except the All-Star Game MVP, which is not a big deal really, since that's not truly hockey. Richter was a good player and the best the U.S. had to offer in the way of goaltending for a while, but I just don't think he belongs with first-ballot HOFers like Leetch and Messier.
Thanks for you opinions. I'm happy that Richter's getting this honor, but I just don't know that it's deserving.

Most definately. His # will be retired at some point when he hangs up his skates. That day will see a packed arena and every eye in place, including the one at center ice, will be moist with tears.
Yeah, and I will be front and centre when he is inducted into the HHOF.

Well than I'm going to be sitting on your lap because I plan on being their too! Since Ronnie is such a humble guy, I don't believe he will make any announcements until AFTER hockey season because he doesn't like people fussing over him. However, knowing how much the fans love him, I'm sure he will give us a final fairwell. I'm sure my husband is already preparing for that moment because I'm going to be a basket case.

PS...to you Mona, I do believe it will be this year. BUT he did say in a recent interview, as long as he's having fun and being used, he will keep on doing it.

They are doing a thing about Richter on CI right now.....it being Mike Richter night and all. Seems Messier thinks his jersey should be up there. What they've shown so far has certainly been inspiring.
