HURRICANES RECALL KURKA, SVOBODA AND ZIGOMANIS
KEN PRESTON

Winger Justin Williams Placed on Injured Reserve

Justin Williams had an assist and three shots on Thursday, before suffering a broken left wrist.
RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 13, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President / General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled forwards Tomas Kurka, Jaroslav Svoboda and Mike Zigomanis from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Hurricanes winger Justin Williams has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss six weeks after suffering a broken left wrist in Thursday’s game against Washington.

Kurka, 22, is being recalled to Carolina for the first time this season. After registering no points in Lowell’s first eight games this season, Kurka was diagnosed with mononucleosis and missed 20 games before returning to the lineup and scoring four goals, 10 assists (14 points) and accumulating six penalty minutes in Lowell’s last 21 games. In parts of three AHL seasons, he has scored 34 goals, earned 37 assists (71 points) and totaled 40 penalty minutes in 161 games. The Most, Czech Republic, native played in 14 games with Carolina during 2002-03, posting three goals and two assists (5 points) in his first NHL season. Prior to his Sept. 24 reassignment to Lowell, he earned two assists in three preseason games with the Hurricanes during the team’s 2003-04 training camp. The Hurricanes selected Kurka in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

Svoboda returns to the Hurricanes roster after an extended two-week conditioning stint with Lowell. Since his reassignment on Jan. 23, Svoboda (6’ 2”, 190 lbs.) has posted two goals and two assists (4 points) in nine games with the Lock Monsters. The 23-year-old, Cervenka, Czech Republic, native began the season in Carolina and played in 17 NHL games without registering a point or a penalty prior to his conditioning stint. In 75 career regular-season NHL games in parts of three seasons, Svoboda has recorded five goals, 13 assists (18 points) and 34 penalty minutes. He played in all 23 of Carolina’s playoff games en route to the Stanley Cup finals in 2002, and recorded one goal in four assists during that stretch. The Hurricanes selected Svoboda in the eighth round, 208th overall, in the 1998 draft.

This marks Zigomanis’ second recall to Carolina this season after the North York, Ont., native made his NHL season debut on Feb. 3 at Colorado. The 23-year-old centerman leads the Lock Monsters in points (43) and assists (32) this season while playing in 48 AHL games. On Feb. 9, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the AHL All-Star Game when he registered a goal and two assists for Canada in the Canadian All-Stars’ 9-4 victory against the PlanetUSA All-Stars in Grand Rapids, Mich. Zigomanis made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes in 2002-03, and scored two goals and earned one assist (3 points) in 19 games during his initial NHL recall. Carolina selected Zigomanis in the second round, 46th overall, in the 2001 draft.

Unbelievable huh?

Didn't know that Kurka had mono. Hope he bounces back really well. I guess we're in total eval mode now - Bayda doesn't get a trip back to Raleigh (not complaining, just an observation).

Deja Vu all over again. Let's do our best to support the new guys that are coming up... It's gonna be a long 26 more games I'm afraid.

Alexander Ovechkin!! Here's the thing: last year we finished last and had a MAJORITY (somewhere around 70%, I think) of the draw for the first pick in the lottery, and we didn't get it. I'm worried the same thing would happen this year, even if we did tank and finish last.

Go Kurka! Go Zigo!

Good point G33 - and while I love that Staal is on our team, it's not like getting the top skater is a guarantee that the team will be in great shape the following season (see: this season).

Just say NO to tanking!!!!!!! The team and the fans need to go out of this season on as positive a note as possible. Screw the first draft pick, IMO.

Agree with both SHC and Mona...we need to make the absolute best of things we can. And as NCCanes said, getting the first or second draft pick doesn't guarantee a wonderful next season (If there is one).

Hmmm... is anyone else wondering why we might have recalled 3 players while losing just one, Justin, last night? Not sure if I'm overlooking something obvious or is there perhaps something going on and/or imminent and the Canes may have wanted the extra players readily available???

What you're hinting at is certainly a possibility, ZJ.
The 'Canes have 27 players in Raleigh, with only 3 of those on the IR. That leaves 4 scratches per night...one obviously due to the injury to Boughner.
Svoboda was on a reconditioning stint...and just recently agreed to extend it for another week or to, so why bring him back up after he just agrees to it? And now that Marty Murray is back, why bring up Zigo again? (I'd dare to say that it's because he's our most electric player in Lowell, and that he deserves the spot in the lineup over someone like Vrbata, who's been pretty stagnant for the majority of the season...)

I think this is a normal recall...Kurka for Williams on IR, Zigo for good play with the 'Canes before the break, Svoboda because he was due to come back from a reconditining stint. But you never know...

nccanes

Well something's gotta be wrong then - you can't have 24 on your active roster? Unless Boogie is going on IR.

But wait - I only count 23.

There were 20 playing last night, Ward/KAdams on IR, Boogie scratched, Jaro conditioning in Lowell (he was listed as a scratch). That's 22 active.

We lose Williams, that's 21.

We add Kurka and Zigo, we're back to 23. Right?

I would guess it's combination of things, potential trades, and/or borderline injuries.

I didn't have a clue until I read this....I didn't even notice that he was gone.. but the game was so exciting, I can see why.. hope he heals quickly.

I noticed that O took a pretty bad slash last night and was real slow getting off the ice and when the game was over, he was moving kind of slow again.. hope he isn't injured!

Thank you for his name, Goalie33. I didn't mean to incite a riot with my suggestion of "tanking" :eek2: , simply trying to sort of do something to turn my utter disgust with Lady Luck into something semi-positive. And good point, we should have gotten the #1 this past year and we didn't so..who knows? I suppose, we should all just enjoy the rest of the season, whatever it may hold, because who knows how long it might be until we get to enjoy some more NHL! :D

I found the answer to my own question in today's N&O...

Canes left limping
Justin Williams is out at least six weeks with a broken arm; Injured Rod Brind'Amour and Ron Francis won't play today

By LUKE DECOCK, Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- The Carolina Hurricanes will be missing three key forwards today against the New Jersey Devils, including one who will miss most of the rest of the season.
Justin Williams, who arrived in a trade last month and walked in the door as the Canes' leading scorer, will miss at least the next six weeks with a broken left arm.

Rod Brind'Amour and captain Ron Francis are both day-to-day with arm injuries and will not play this afternoon, general manager Jim Rutherford said Friday.

Now, all we need is for O'Neill to break his neck and we're all set.

Isn't it weird that about the time we've decided that the playoffs race was utterly hopeless, both this year and last, EVERYONE starts getting injured? I guess it's once of two things: a) these are inuries that players would ordinarily skate through (although, the broken bones aren't) but since there is nothing at stake now, they don't or b) it's an organizational decision to tank for the best draft pick. I sure hope it's not b. That makes me sick.

The last place team doesn't automatically get the first pick. Theoretically, that prevents total tanking. Depending on how low they finish, a team gets a certain numbers of slips/balls/whatever with its name on them in a lottery for the first pick. Last year, we had a majority of them and still didn't get #1.

Craig Adams didn't make the trip to New Jersey? I saw him on the ice. The NHL game report says he got 14 and a half minutes of ice time. I think Tripp was smoking something.

I also think the contagiousness of the norovirus is either being played up a bit much in the media or I have one hell of an immune system. My husband had it and a friend's entire family got it the day after I spent the day with them. That was over two weeks ago and I haven't even felt any nausea. Guess I'm lucky.
