WAYMORESPORTS.COM: reports Carolina Hurricanes centre Josef Vasicek could be "on the outs" with management. The promising but oft-injured Vasicek has been passed on the depth chart by Kevyn Adams while rookie Mike Zigomanis is making the most of his opportunity due to the injury to veteran centre Rod Brind'amour. The report suggest Vasicek could attract a fair bit of interest in the off-season if he becomes available.

Spector's Note: It may be a mistake for the 'Canes to give up on this guy too soon. While he hasn't developed as quickly as hoped, injuries have played a big part in that. He's only 22 and still has plenty of time to develop.

I really don't know jack about how rumors develop and how accurate these things are - but it sounds to me that someone read the article DeCock wrote where he (DeCock) rattled off some stats about his up and down season and where Maurice mentioned that he wanted to see more "intensity" from Joe. There was also mention made about KAdams making a case for more ice time.

You can see the article quotes in the Montreal game thread I think.

Joe was mentioned as one of JR's 'untouchables' along with Ronnie, Roddie, et al. If you ask me it'd be a shame to give up on him now...they guy's only 22! He has many good years ahead of him. Though I do think K Adams deserves the 3rd line more than Joe, Vasicek needs time to mature into the player he can be. He hasn't had enough time to be able to speculate about his future with the organization.

If you ask me, he was rushed a bit. Joe has the potential to replace Ronnie on the top line after he hangs up his skates...whether or not it will happen is a matter of speculation, but it would certainly be hasty to write off a 22 year old's future in the organization so soon.

He and Ziggy could make up the 'Canes top two lines in the distant future...Joe just needs some time to learn the ins and outs of NHL hockey, to mature a bit. Unless an awesome trade offer appears, I don't see Joe going anywhere next year, another franchise or Lowell.

I sure hope we aren't giving up on Joe either. I mean really...we've seen them spend/waste (depending on your perspective) all this time waiting for Tanabe to develop....why give up on Joe so soon! I think he's probably safe and, as NC suggested they just read that N&O article (in which DeCock gave a bit more of his opinion than was necessary for a news story, IMO) and went from there.

Seems like to me, since Bates has been gone, Joe has become the new "whipping boy".

And lets be honest, he shouldn't be centering our second line right now. I feel that if he was centering his 3rd line(or 4th? Mo wanted the Adamses to move up in the line order...) as usual that we would lay off of him a bit. He is expected to preform at a high calibur level to make up for Brindy's loss, and he just isn't ready to do that yet. For what we need him and expected him to do this year, which is to center a checking line with the occasional score, he has done well.

I am not for trading Joe, but I do think he has to step up and prove to this team he wants to be and can be a 1st or 2nd line center. With Ronnie probably only a year from retirement, center is a position we will need help in filling. we have lots of forwards, but not lots of centers.

I think he deserves more time and I like Joe and look forward to seeing him playing with all the new players on a healthy squad next year. I do think he will have to step it up and keep up the intensity over the whole year, something he's not been able to do so far. that said, I think he has good potential and would love to see it put to use for this team.
