If you could only change 1 rule in the NHL, which would it be?

I put my vote in for restricting goalie pads. Having car seats tied to your legs seems like cheating.

If I could change one actual rule, I'd get rid of the instigator. If I could change a concept, I'd tell the referees to call the penalties in the rule book and fine them if they didn't. Bucci said it best when he said that if a player is in front of you pursuing the puck or with the puck, you can't pull on them, you must go for the puck. If you want to body them, move your legs and pull even. There were at least three times when someone was waterskiing all the way through the zone on Brindy when he had legitimate chances to get the puck in scoring position.

Like Bucci says, 4 inches taller and 6 inches wider, and 3 feet back. You could drive two lanes of traffic behind the net these days.

Sod enlarging the net--get rid of the instigator rule, and watch the injury rate begin to drop when the Bryan Marchments of the League realize that they won't be allowed to get away with cheap-shotting anyone anymore....

Drop the instigator rule was my vote too. I'd like to move the nets back as well and I don't mind reducing pad size but if I have to pick one instigator rule is it.
I went with eliminating icing/offsides... breaks the flow of the game too much.

whacky French Canadians. I caught one once rooting around in my garbage - had him stuffed and use him as a decorative lamp.
I really have a problem with having to touch the puck following an icing. Offsides seems to be more and more in "interesting call" (or is that just me? ) I went with icing/offsides as well. Rio /Lady J's avatars have me in their power.... :eek2:

I was going to go with the instigator rule since I have been known to drop the gloves a time or two in my day. But, I voted for the goalie equipment. There's nothing I hate more than seeing a 2-1 game where the game winner happens because someone crashes the net to jam it through the goalie (where have I seen THAT recently?)
Who doesn't like a nice fast break down the wing, followed by a big slapper past the goalie? What's wrong with 8-4 games or a hard fought 5-4 win? People, goals are good.

I guess eliminating the icing and off-sides is OK.....if you want to watch basketball. I want to watch hockey.....not Ilya Kovalchuk standing in front of the net all night and not watching a team simply camp out in their defensive zone and clear the puck all night once they are up two goals.....and that's what I think you'd get without off-sides and icing. Maybe tweak those rules a bit or maybe just give the linesmen glasses so they can call them right. Dropping them doesn't exactly make it hockey anymore, IMO.

I say reduce the size of the goalie pads. Move the net back. Tweak offsides, but leave icing (although I could live with no touch icing), I'm also good with it the way it is.
make sure it's still a hockey game. and remember it's a team sport.

I agree, but all suggestions are good, but the eliminate offsides/ icings.

Ah, young Fernando, those rules are there to keep players from cherry picking and camping in front of the goalie. They won't be eliminated (wow, MXC moment).

I don't know about getting rid of the instigator rule. We don't need the Worrels of the league able to jump on and likey destroy the Vrbata's of the league. I'm not so sure that just knowing there is another guy on the bench thats gonna try to get you is enough deterent for guys doing the thing I just mentioned. Plus it would be to easy for guys to run back to the bench.
But I definitley think somthing needs to be done/changed with the insitgator. The "enforcing" needs to be put back in the hands of the "enforcers"
