Forecasters predict severe hurricane season this year
FORT COLLINS, Colorado (AP) -- The 2003 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be twice as severe as last year, forecasters said.
"A wide variety of global indicators obtained and analyzed through March continue to point to 2003 being an active Atlantic hurricane season," Colorado State University professor William
Gray said Friday. "We expect Atlantic basin tropical cyclone activity to be about 140 percent of average this year."
There were four hurricanes during the June-November 2002 hurricane season. Gray and his associates predict eight for 2003, including three intense hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.
The Weather Research Center, a private forecasting company based in Houston, predicts six hurricanes for the season.
Gray and his associates attribute the increase to the decline of El Nino, which had suppressed hurricane activity last season. The forecasters also cite very warm sea surface temperatures combining with decreasing sea surface pressures in the north and tropical Atlantic as factors.

I think these are supposed to be more scary than they really are, just like most severe weather reports and predictions. So they say that this upcoming hurricane season will be twice as severe as last year's? I guess that ups the chances of a major hurricane hitting the coast, which didn't happen last season.
While we're on the subject of real hurricanes, I decided to see if any of the names for hurricanes this season and upcoming ones match any of our Hurricanes' names...this heralded some interesting matches. In 2003, we could see a Hurricane Erika (Hey, it's close to Erik (Cole)...) and/or Nicholas (Close to Niclas (Wallin).). In 2004, we could see a Hurricane Frances (Sounds like Francis...) and/or Tomas (Kurka, Malec). In 2005, there's a possibilty of Hurricane Bret (Hedican). In 2006, Hurricane Michael (Zigomanis) is possible. And in 2008, Hurricane Arthur (Close to Arturs (Irbe).) could happen.
Well, I thought that was interesting... :spin:

They've said the same thing the last two years and in actuality the season's have been extremely light.
I'd be worried if they said it was going to be a quiet season...
