Standing in line at Food Lion tonight, I looked over at the magazines and saw a National Enquirer, and noticed the headline, "Sigfried and Roy call it quits?"

I had to laugh at myself minutes later, because when I read the headline, in mind I read it as "Sigfried and WAH!!" And then I thought to myself... oh dear, you know you've been watching too much hockey when you see the name, Roy, and pronounce it Wah...

So, anyway..... I thought I'd start a thread. Any additions?

You know you've watched too much hockey when......

Thanks to you and this thread Shawn, I just realized that I have been pronouncing Roy's (of Siegfried and Roy, of course) name wrong!! And it's not just that Roy...I have a tendency to want to pronounce all Roys* like that! :eek2:

We were watching the movie "Gattaca" (Ethan Hawke, Jude Law and Uma Thurman) in Theology class, and Ethan Hawke's character's name was Vincent... and I couldn't stop thinking about Vincent Lecavalier... LOL.

LOL Tommy. I call Vinny L "pinhead". He's a very handsome guy, but he looks like a pinhead with his helmet on. Now when you think of Vinny, you'll think of "pinhead". :D

I KNOW I've got some to add to this thread (I've done the Roy/Wah thing too Shawn), but I can't think of any at the moment.

This is a lame one, but we brought a friend of my son's along to the Florida game recently. Just as it began, my son leaned over to him and said "I'm just gonna let you know ahead of time, you might get embarrassed when my Mom starts yelling".

When my cats fight, I put them in the penalty box for 5 minutes for fighting (with an extra 2 for instigation, for whichever cat started it). Max sometimes bites me when I grab him though, which gets him an extra 10 minutes for Abuse of Officials and 2 minutes for Biting.

I sometimes find myself sitting in my office humming "Let's Go Canes"... and when I watched the All-Star Game, I heard the beginning music of the "Good Old Hockey Game" with Bare Naked Ladies and I was like awwwwwwwwwwwww.... I hear hockey songs on the radio, on tv or in stores sometimes and I want to jump up and down... when I hear them in the "off season", I look like this... >>

And heaven forbid I am in another part of the house and hear Hurricanes mentioned... I make a mad dash to the tv..and I STILL get excited while watching our commercials.. especially when the "Winger" comes in! ;)

I guess my biggest confession of being a hockey freak/fanatic is, walking into the arena for Home Game 40, I am just as excited as Opening Night.. I never tire of waiting in line for my hot dog and watching "Cool Shots" on the screens.. **sigh** We MUST make the playoffs!! :spin:

It works remarkably well--separate the cats, they chill out. It takes Max a while though, as he tends to spend the first couple minutes of his penalty trying to get the bedroom door open so he can come out and show me who's boss by biting my ankles. After he's expended all his anger, he just goes to curl up on the bed and wait for the door to open so he can come wandering out like nothing happened. :D

He's a feisty little kitty. :D

LOL. Yeah, my husband always laughs at me because the TV will be on but I won't be paying a bit of attention to it....until someone says the word "Hurricane" then my head snaps up and I'm immediately attentive. He thinks it's hilarious. My ears also perk up when someone uses the word "weeks" or any of our player's names happen to pop up incidentally.

Also, my friends who don't know/care a thing about hockey always ask me about the team as soon as they see me because they know they might as well get it over with cause they're gonna have to hear it sometime anyway.

I do the Roy thing too. You also gotta watch those "v"s and "w"s.

When my kids fight they don't get sent to time out, its always the penalty box. Two minute roughing for the minor ones, five for fighting for the major ones. The funny thing is that no matter how big the fight they tend to burst out laughing when I hand out the penalties...they sulk to their rooms while stiffling giggles.

Well now I'm mad. I was playing my guitar... practicing for a jam with the Quizno Virtuoso family... when BAM! My strat swung around... knocked over the pre-amp and it fell on and busted my favortite roy-roy pedal.

I've got two more:

You know you've watched too much hockey, when a co-worker comes up to you and says, "What did you think of the game last night?" And you start rambling -- "Well the D look really good. Nicky's really been picking up his game. And I think Justin Williams is a great addition --his goal was aweseome...." And then you notice her blank stare at you, and you realize she was referring to some kind of ACC garbage..... and you didn't even know there was a "big" game.

And this one cracks me up:
Last Thursday (when I was grumpy in another thread about the weather, and co-workers w/kids), my boss had to bring her little boy to the office because his daycare was closing early. He's only 4, but LOVES the Hurricanes. They're STH's, Detroit transplants, and have been bringing him to games since he was born.

Anyway, he had a little kid's souvenier hockey stick w/him and a ball, and was practicing his shots in our conference room, which is directly behind me. All of sudden he stops and runs into his Mom's office, which is directly behind me. And I hear him say, "Mom! Mom! Do the stand up song! Do the stand up song!" She can't figure out what he means, so I start throwing out some suggestions, "You mean like when they score? and everybody stands up and cheers" And he's like, "No! No!-- before they start the game. And Jeff O'Neill's [who's his favorite player] like this." And he stands at attention, holding the stick blade out touching the floor w/his hands clasped together at the the top of the stick....... He wanted her to sing THE NATIONAL ANTHEM!!! So, very quietly my boss and I sing the Star Spangled Banner, while her little boy stares straight ahead very seriously, then applauds when we're done and runs back into the conference room.

From now on, I'll always think of the National Anthem as "The Stand Up Song!" :D

And we had on the last two minutes of the State/Carolina game (WRONG PEOPLE WON! :p ) the other night and I was asking who all those people sitting in the rows closest to the rink were. (I guess those are State students or the band? They were ALL weraing red shirts) I'm always calling the court/field the ice these days. It's as it should be.

I have actually been a Duke fan for 24 years (don't hate me for that, I was only 10 at the time!) but I know I watch too much hockey when I only watched one Duke game season before last & was pretty much like "Duke who?". Shocked many a friend and family member to realize that hockey had so quickly taken over my life!

Duke fan here. Earned it by paying for a law school education there. Unfortunately it wasn't mine, but I digress...

Wasn't there a Japanese all star hockey player named Roy Watanabe?

In parts of Western Quebec, Roy is not pronounced "WAH" but more of a rednecky "waaaaaah". Oh, check that....I was a little further down the road out of Montreal. Sorry, that's Toronto. my bad....

another cute one......when parents bring their kids to hockey games since
they were wee ones....they know their hockey at a very early age....this
little four year old that sits near me is a cute one. His mother was telling
me about the previous night when they saw that beer commercial where
the VERY HEAVY goalie comes out and just stoops there in the net and
doesn't budge......this little one yells out....*HEY BUDDY!! SHUT YOUR FIVE HOLE*..
...which delighted the rest of the the family.....

then another favorite of mine.....another family that sits in front of me...
somebody flipped someone over...think it was Ward. And this little seven
year old blirts out *now THAT will certainly be on SPORTCENTER tonight!!*

love these kids.....so funny~~
