From ch.com's Pre-Game Skate:

The Hurricanes open their 14th set of back-to-back games on Friday at Atlanta. Carolina will return to the RBC Center on Saturday to face Eastern Conference rival New Jersey. The Hurricanes are currently 8-13-4-1 in back-to-back games, with a 2-8-2-1 record in the front halves of those sets and a 6-5-2-0 record in the back halves...

...The Hurricanes and the Thrashers meet tonight for the fourth of six regular-season match ups, and the first of three meetings in March. The teams will next meet on March 12 at the RBC Center before returning to Philips Arena on March 15 to conclude the six-game divisional series. Jeff O’Neill notched his second career hat trick on Jan. 16 to lead the Hurricanes past the Thrashers. The Hurricanes defeated the Thrashers 5-1 at the RBC Center on Nov. 13, as Erik Cole (1g, 1a) and Ron Francis (1g, 1a) led the scoring. The teams meet three more times in 2003-04 following tonight’s game: March 5 and March 15 at Philips Arena and March 12 at the RBC Center.

Last season, Atlanta scored its first two regular-season victories against the Hurricanes after Carolina posted a 12-0-3-0 record against the Thrashers in Atlanta’s first three seasons. Atlanta downed the Hurricanes for the first time on Dec. 27 in Raleigh and again March 26 in Atlanta. Carolina won two of the teams’ five matches, including one in overtime on Dec. 20 at Philips Arena. Jeff O’Neill posted six points (3g, 3a) in the five-game regular-season series to lead Carolina and Ilya Kovalchuk led Atlanta with nine points (6g, 3a). The Hurricanes are 16-3-4-0 all-time against the Thrashers, including a 9-2-1-0 home record and a 7-1-3-0 road mark.

I really need some help with my fantasy team, and Weekes is in goal for me tonight; let's hope that's a good sign.

Anywho, discuss at will!

The last trip to Philips was a very pleasant experience for the team and me.... Let's hope they play with the same intensity and keep the fire-breathing bird quiet....

It said in the paper that Archie was the probable goalie.. I was hoping that Weekesy would play and Arch could start at home tomorrow.. I guess we will just have to wait and find out..

Go Canes! :spin:

Hmm, online (forget which site) it said Weekes would start; I have no clue, I guess we'll find out.

How is it possible that I'm still looking forward to games? That it still makes my day when I know I have a hockey game to look forward to? That as excited as I am to be going to Disney World tomorrow I'm sick I'll be missing two home games? I really need to get a life, I guess.

Points for Ronnie, goals for O'Neill, good things for Eric Staal.

Yeah...SHC's post made me think...and I think I'd take two Canes home games over a trip to WDW. Of course, it helps that I have been to Disney World five times AND don't want the last game I got to see in person for the season be the one against Columbus.

But anyway, have a safe and fun trip SHC! :spin:

no SHC- I'm feeling the same way, especially since they brought Irbe back. We'll just huddle up to the TV and watch the ESPN ticker scroll by looking for a semblance of information.

I don't think I've ever heard him say that. He's right, though.

I thought that too. He usually just doesn't say much about it so they must be incredibly bad tonight. Or maybe it's getting so close to the end of the season that his self-censor button is worn out ;)

Yes they do. And they bear almost no resemblance to that team that played Columbus the other night, lol. It sure would be nice to finish out the season with those awful games as the abberation rather than the norm.

O'Neill particularly appears to be having a ball!! Nice to see him offering some what looked like encouragements to Staal from the bench.

I think they are really having fun tonight. It hasn't been a very pretty game, but they are getting the job done. They know most of them will be playing golf in a month, so now that they've finally found some rhythm to their team game, enjoy it. get ready for the off season and get ready to get back here and have a playoff worthy season in 04-05

After seeing Randy's face get smashed In I have to wonder, why the hell do we have a dasher? All it does is induce injuries, why not move the glass on to the front and secure it somehow that way, thiers gotta be a better way, cause that dasher is prolly the reason of 10% of the injuries in the NHL.

Why do we panic for a few minutes after we are scored on.

MeanGene
03-05-2004, 08:26 PM
These officials are horrible!! Brindy gets taken down and there is no call. Atlanta gets a rush, and they are called for offsides that clearly was onsides. Maybe that was a make up call for not calling a trip 10 seconds earlier.

Atlanta could have easily had 3 goals in the first 3 minutes of this half. One goal counted, one did not, and Heatley hit the post.

We are lucky tonight!

nevermind my original post. I can't read any better than the officials can see ;) I don't know if they suspend goalies. they should if it's an infraction they'd suspend any other player for committing, but I don't know. interesting question.

SouthernHockeyChick
03-05-2004, 08:32 PM
Yeah, they called the slash (hence my referring to it as the "slashing call") as well as the goaltender interference. I just couldn't believe he intentionally smacked him in the back of the neck with his stick. I don't like it when other teams' players do that crap and I don't like it when ours do and I think it probably should warrant a suspension....though I'd rather it didn't. (yes, I'm a homer)

Awww, no one likes my naked mole-rat? You'd rather look at Darcy, huh?

EDIT: Yeah, TC, that was my question. I don't know if I can remember a goalie being suspended off the top of my head.

BTW, if my history showed that I was able to compliment Weekes without jinxing him I'd agree that he's certainly shaken off the shakiness.

Honestly, Weekes gave a poor rebound, but he didn't give it up to an open man, JLGP should have been covered. He more than made up for that imo, and if we didn't score on all those chances in OT (or Staal on his breakaway), those guys are as much to blame for making 1 bad play as Weekes with his 12 seconds to go goal.

And I absolutely LOVE Nurminen's stick smashing. I think it's his signature. He smashed his stick exactly like that after Gagne scored on that penalty shot to win the game 5-4. I LOVE it! We replayed that a bunch of times too!

And we were having apoplexy (sp?) because our cable started flickering during the end of the game and would flash black now and then. And yes, it went black with about 2 seconds left and when it came back the puck was going in the net.

I can only imagine... ;)

And the refs tonight were Dean Warren and Dennis LaRue. God willing, we will never see them again. On both sides, they were terrible. In OT, they actually helped us out, we had about 4 times when a call could have been made, even considering it was OT. Even the call on Sutton (or whoever) obstructing Wallin was pretty marginal. And then they finally make the call on Hill with however many seconds left. Whatever. Bad refs, through and through.

BUT WE STILL WON AS TIME EXPIRED!!! WOOT!

And we were having apoplexy (sp?) because our cable started flickering during the end of the game and would flash black now and then. And yes, it went black with about 2 seconds left and when it came back the puck was going in the net.

Same here, what was up with that? Kinda missed the winning goal! Totally scary!

(I'll have to check on your spelling, btw ;))

My DirecTV did that too. I yelled a really bad word.

Eileen, LOL about calling 911 for me. We replayed something and were a bit behind so I didn't want to come in and find out what happened before I saw it. Then, after it happened we had to watch it about 6 more times. Ahhh, that was fun.

Apoplexy is correct, BTW.

Okay people fess up. Did you notice that when the Canes went on the PP with less than 2 minutes to go that the Thrasher fans started to leave? I said "what are those people doing? don't they know who they are playing?". I'm not sure if that was some sort of jinx, if it was I apologize (but that was a fun OT to watch wasn't it?). That damn overtime just shaved a few years off my life!I LOVE HOCKEY!!! i say Kevyn Adams for Captain after the beloved RF retires. You never hear him *****ing about playing time or drooling at the mouth at the mention of playing for another team. However, you do always see him high fiving the kids after a game and playing like every game was his last in the nhl. And that whole short -handed, goal-scoring penchant ain't half bad, either :spin: You know, i tape every game, but didn't tonight because i was taping the prehistoric spongebob episode for my kids. Aahh, irony. Looking forward to being in the rbc tomorrow night for a little Devil @sswhippin'

A few of the local indoor inline hockey and soccer facilities have glass all the way down to the floor. That'd be cool wouldn't it? I'm sure there is some reason why they don't do that -- maybe because the players would lose the puck against the glass when people were right up to it as opposed to the white.

I am more and more distressed we didn't see the victory dance! You don't think they are talking about KAdams celebration and the group hug that followed, do you.

These are fans that see Kovalchuk do the SCF winning goal dance for an empty netter. Hardly a group to be offended by a celebration even if it involved a parade and elephants.

LOL TC.

I asked for clarification and this is what I got:

They gathered in a huddle and started jumping up and down and dancing. It was really weird

I suspect it's a variation on the little huddled thing that O'Neill, Jesse, Willy and I forget who did after the Caps win.

The Leafs have been doing that whole team huddle jumping thing (thought they did not do it here when they won in OT - I was watching for it). So I don't know if it's something like that or a variation. I wouldn't call what the Leafs did "dancing".

I hope to see it tomorrow! :D

I am sooo proud of our boys!!! 10 shots in OT thats pretty darned good...a power play goal...way to goo...and Wardo's coming back as soon as Monday in the lineup. Life is good. I was pretty darned surprised to come up here to my friend's computer and read that with 6 seconds left in OT there was no score and then to return up here and see that they had won...I figured it had to be a last minute win or something...but boy what a pleasant gift..I'm starting to think they're doing better without me watching.....say it ain't so boys!! sniffle. Kovalchuk is as big a diver as Mogilny.

And cherry picker

And showboat.

Kovalchuk is also a better skater, puckhandler, and shooter than anyone on our team. Since he skates more ice time than most defensemen do, I think he deserves a break camped out on the red line once in awhile. Seems to work for him since he has twice the goals scored as our top scorer does, plus it makes the game exciting to see him pop out on a breakaway once a game.

I find it amusing that the same people who enjoy our after game "victory dance" think Kovalchuk showboats too much after he scores. Wasn't Erik Cole quoted as saying you shouldn't celebrate a goal scored, like you never have done it before? Act like you are actually supposed to score. Why does he participate in the new after game rituals then? Shouldn't he act like we have won games before? Seems kind of contradictory.

Personally I like the emotional outbursts from players. Why not celebrate after a goal is scored, or after we win a game? It's all good on both sides. It makes it seem like the players actually give a damn, and I'm all for that! I think hockey needs more Kovalchuk type celebrations. It gets people talking about hockey. People talk in the office the next day, "did you see that crazy celebration by the Canes after the game?" Non hockey fans will want to check that out. Same as Tiger Woods and his arm pumping. You didn't see much emotion in golf before that, and Tiger's actions certainly haven't hurt the game of golf.

I think there's a difference between celebrating a shorthanded breakaway in OT with .5 seconds left, and celebrating a empty net goal that ices a 4-2 victory. Of course, I didn't see it, so what do I know.

I really need to step in and defend the Thrashers fans, here.

Not ALL of them are classless asshats like that. My interactions with the Thrashers fans have been very uniformly good. They're good people and--even though they hate the 'Canes because of the gross ownage that we've visited upon them in the win-loss column--on the whole they're pretty sportsmanlike and will treat an opposing fan well as long as s/he behaves him/herself.

Don't let the reactions of a few (well OK, a couple dozen or so) morons color your view of the entire Thrashers fanbase, guys. It's not like they come into our house and treat the home crowd like drek (see "WingsFan" and "LeafsFan"), and (Chopper buses aside) I haven't seen or heard about boatloads of our fans going to the Bulb and treating the Thrashers fans like drek.
