Recently we lost our charger and the battery stopped holding its charge so I convinced him that we really should get a brand-new camera. He agreed that it would make a good mother's day present. I recently bought a Canon A40. 2.1 MP's, you can add a couple of lenses (macro, wide angle, telephoto) to it, which make it a little more adaptable.

Doesn't touch the 350mm on our Nikon, but like I said, I can't afford a digital SLR. :sad:

The A40 is a beaut, imo... and I found it for around $250 (I think, can't really remember now). Shell has taken some real good player shots, I'm sure if you've been in the ladies thread you've seen what the camera can do. I also use it a lot for closeups of my fish. does a pretty good job in macro mode, even w/out the macro lens. For what I wanted to do... it certainly does it. I had a smaller budget than 300-500 though. but, then again, why spend more if you don't need to. all depends on what you want.

That camera is unbelievable. Hey Guyute, skip the 42 inch widescreen and go for the 34 incher. It's awesome! Sony KV-34XBR800 if you want to look it up. The picture's absolutely stunning. When you say 42 inch I'm assuming you mean either a plasma or a rear-projection. This one's a CRT tube television meaning very heavy but amazing colors, brightness, and viewing range. Just throwing that out there if you're looking to save some money. It would be cheaper than a 42 inch plasma but much more expensive than most 42 inch rear-projection sets.... I dunno if you were serious about getting one or just joking, hehe, but I thought if I could help you out I should. It's definitely got a big picture, the widescreen picture is equivalent to what you would see on a 37 inch set, and the 4:3 picture with black bars on the left and right is a 28 inch picture though it can be stretched or zoomed. As you can probably tell from my knowledge on the set, I've got it and it's unbelievable. Let me know if I can help with anything at all!

those haven't come down nearly enough in price yet. I was looking at a rear projection 42" widescreen (JVC). I have a JVC screen now and absolutely love it. Sony's are very nice as well... but come with a very inflated price tag, imo.

actually, after a quick search of local retailers, the 48" JVC is down to $1700. ;)

I wasn't joking. I've been dying for a nice widescreen tv. but, it'll probably have to wait, as we're going to the Caymans next month, and that'll about be the cost of a new screen. heh

We have been in the market for a widescreen as well, but I think that we have definitely decided on getting a DLP front projector. It is a bit more expensive that the price range you two are discussing, but it can stretch up to 300", and eventually we want to build a movie room. :)

Don't pay any attention to digitla zoom. It is just like cropping the picture and you lose picture quality with digital, but not optical zoom.

Prices seem to drop every week. Check sunday's paper and compare prices. Places like Staples, Best Buy, and Circuit City do price matching and a lot of times have coupons. You can get some really good deals. I hope I get my Gainsharing check this week so I can get a new camera!

Thanks for the advice. That's the one thing about the Mavica, the resolution is a crummy .9 MP, but I do have a 10x zoom that is awesome. I guess I better start doing my research!

That is what we have a work. They got them so that the teachers can keep the disks on file with the childrens pictures and it is easy to upload. That is what they used to think anyway. We have the newer Mavicas now that use the big 3 1/2 disks, but they can use memory sticks too. I may be wrong, but I do not think the zoom is 10x in the new cameras.

I prefer the smaller cameras personally. The mavicas are a little too bulky for my taste. I do like the big LCD though.

I have used the A40 for many projects (I'm a graphic designer / potential mental patient), and can confirm Guy's comments. I have seen and played with the Kodak Pro DCS-14n, and can tell that the detail you can pull from it is comparable to drum scanning a transparency at high resolution! It is sah-weeeet, but the price tag is scary. I think I'll stick with the A40, well, at least for the next 2 weeks until something better comes out ;) LOL.
