Even after seemingly dumping salary in the form of Anson Carter at trading day, they still managed to fend off the Predators for the final playoff spot. Granted, the Predators had a very inopportune enermous winless streak but the Oilers clinched the playoff spot nonetheless with some solid performances. I don't think anyone's expecting the Oilers to go far though..... Dallas wins this one 4-0. I'm sorry but I just can't see Edmonton winning a game in this series. Turco's amazing.

I'm actually not the slightest bit interested in this series. But my prediction is Stars in 6.

Ummmm....yeah, this guy Turco might give them a chance to win. ;)

from yahoo news...
Turco finishes with 1.72 GAA, lowest in modern NHL

By IRA PODELL, AP Sports Writer

Marty Turco risked his goals-against average just by playing on the final day of the regular season. Things worked out perfectly for the star goalie and his Dallas teammates.

Turco dropped his GAA to 1.72 -- the lowest in the NHL's modern era -- in Dallas' 2-0 home victory over Nashville on Sunday.

And coupled with Detroit's 4-3 overtime loss at Chicago, the Stars earned the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

``This has certainly been a magical year, for the team and for myself,'' Turco said.

Turco, who made 21 saves for his seventh shutout of the season, came in with a 1.75 GAA, already better than the record of 1.77 set by Chicago's Tony Esposito in 1971-72.

This is UTTERLY lopsided. Since the Oilers traded away Anson Carter to save money, they've been paying the price ever since (no pun intended... :D)....

Dallas will take this and it may be a mauling. Turco is a dangerous, dangerous man.

Marty Turco will be unstoppable in the playoffs, I'm sure. He is the single reason why the Stars will get to the Western Conference Championship game, if not the finals.
But, does Big D have the offense to back that up? That is the question. Modano is always good, and Niko Kapanen is a very good rookie. If they can get enough offense out of those two and others, Dallas will win the series handily.
I say Dallas in 5.

Yeah, the Carter trade was absurd. The leading scorer on a playoff bound team being traded away in a salary dump is unheard of. If I was an Oiler fan I would be angry. I believe it was described by someone in the Oilers franchise to the tune of "With Carter (and whoever that other player they traded away was, I can't remember) we may have gotten past the first round but we wouldn't have gotten the cup so what's the point?" WHAT'S THE POINT? AREN'T YOU SUPPOSED TO TRY YOUR BEST? That would be like last year's Hurricanes trading away Francis, Brindamour, Cole, Battaglia, and Hedican before last year's playoffs because management felt that they might be able to win a series or two but have no chance of beating a Western conference team for the cup. They not only made it to the cup but gave Detroit a definite run for it's money.

Maybe the Oilers could've gone somewhere with their stars that are now gone but now it seems almost like a series that has to played simply because it's in the rulebook that the Dallas Stars must have a first round opponent..... Edmonton did finish the season okay but I don't agree with their wheelings and ealings. I'll enjoy seeing the Stars devour the Oilers though.

Two teams I am rather indifferent about, but watching Turco in goal should be very interesting to watch, especially in later match-ups, once Dallas sends the Oilers back to Edmonton.

Hatcher got a 5 minute major/Misconduct with 2:30 left in the game for elbowing.

Edmonton just scored with 5 seconds left but it is under review.

Dallas got screwed on a few no calls tonight.

This game is NEVER going to end!!! They keep having pile-ups and then it takes the refs 15 minutes to sort out all the penalties. What a mess.

Even though I was hoping the Stars would take this game the final period of this game just came across to me as being painful to watch.....I just wanted NHL Tonight to preempt the game towards the end. Penalty after penalty after penalty, the refs as confused if not more so than I was, and the game slowly detoriorated into a streetfight. I did like how each respective side was trying to send a message to the other. If anything this will be the set-up game for a spectacular game 3. Very decisive game, and could swing the series one or another for good. Edmonton can't throw the game to the wind and start taking stupid penalties like they did tonight though....

Did anyone watch the game on CI -- Hockey Night Canada?

During the 2nd Intermission, they spoke to (by remote) Paul Maurice and Scotty Bowman. I guess the coaches are going to be "consulted" during the playoffs, to get their insight on coaching thru the playoffs.

Mo's bags are starting to diminish.... ..... but he still looks tired.

Edmonton fans are awesome. What a thrilling 3rd period, ay? :)

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. The Canes fans got pretty spoiled last season. The Canes won their first 4 home playoff games! I remember being at Game 2 vs. Montreal which was their first loss. Afterward I was thinking "well, can't complain that we lost one".

Please Oilers, give those fans something more than floppy foam noodles for Game 4!

Yeah, he looked so sullen. I guess there were no bags, but the dark circles were there!

Shell gave the heads up about it. It seems like some of the other games carried by ESPN/ABC have been blacked out by CI. Maybe it's different if it's a CBC broadcast. I'll have to remember that in the future.

And the crowd sure was insane! Great atmosphere in the Skyreach Center.

Dvorak breaks hand, out indefinitely
TSN.ca Staff
4/16/2003
EDMONTON (CP) - The underdog Edmonton Oilers were looking for a break heading into Dallas with the series tied 2-2, but they don't like the one they got.

As they were boarding the plane for Dallas on Wednesday, the players learned they had lost Czech sniper Radek Dvorak indefinitely with a broken hand. It was a crushing blow for the club that has twice fumbled opportunities to get two games ahead of the Western Conference champion Stars in the quarter-final playoff series. Dvorak, whose highlight reel goal won Game 3 for the Oilers, broke his right hand when he missed his attempt to check Jere Lehtinen midway through the third period in the Oilers 3-1 loss to the Stars on Tuesday.

He was scheduled for surgery Wednesday.

Amazing job by Edmonton killing the four minute minor. They really had a huge chance shorthanded though....A THREE ON ONE! But it was a bit mishandled though. Ah well, they definitely dodged a bullet after that as the Stars had a three on one going back the other day and ended up not being able to score.......

Oh um.........Scott Young just scored with a few seconds left on the power play. Yeah.

I think Dallas will be a tough match up for the Ducks. Dallas is a more physical team than Detroit and I don't think there's a chance Dallas will take the Ducks lightly. Here's hoping the Ducks have plenty left to take it to the Stars.

I think Dallas will be a much more difficult matchup for the Ducks. Dallas is bigger and more physical. of course, if JSG remains the wall he was against Detroit, it'll be hard for Dallas to score goals.
