I don't feel very charitable right now. In fact, I'm pretty sad.
you have my condolences, RIO. i think you're right about steve coming back next year. :) at least you can take refuge in the fact that most people's brackets got busted last night too.

LMAO Check this out: I think it's the quote of the playoffs so far:
“If you would have asked me at the beginning of the series about a sweep, I would have said, 'No'.”
Really, Giggy?

"During the (post-game) handshakes, a couple of the Ducks players said they had no business winning this series," Brendan Shanahan said.
Boy, the Ducks seem primed to move on to the next round.
A great goalie..a few scorers....some humilty and humbleness...sounds like a Stanley Cup winner to me!

I feel bad for goalies in general. You really have to be a special kind of crazy to want the sort of pressure they have on them.

true crazy...they all have pressure but the most of the time, the ultimate outcome will be on the shoulders of the goalie and his ability to keep the puck out!! I wouldn't want that job...give me a d-man job anytime..cracking heads.. :D

I totally agree with you. I've always had a soft spot for goalies, maybe because I can relate a little with them. I feel bad for CuJo because I actually like him, and no matter what, people are going to blame him. But I guess that's going to happen in everywhere. CuJo played well during this series..Giguere just played better.
Anyways, here's some happy Ducks:

Unbelievable. I was really hoping for the Wings to wipe the Ducks out, but i won't cry about seeing the Wings tossed out on their torsos, either.
So who's gonna be next for the Ducks? The Stars, perhaps the Avs? It's all good, the Ducks will be fricaseed (sp) next series.
After watching the Senators, Bolts, and Avs win last night, i won't complain too much about this one, especially since i was in bed chasing sheep anyway. Besides, having Shanahan, Fedorov, and Chelios sent to the country clubs is never a bad thing...

ducks will get the stars if they win.
if the stars lose, the ducks would get the winner of the blues/'nucks matchup... which right now looks to be the blues.
and damned if I didn't Want to pick the blues in my bracket... but figured the nucks would win.
ducks are 7th in the west.. which means unless edmonton wins, the ducks will play the highest seed next round. oilers win, they'll draw highest seed (which would be the avs)

I just have one question. Why do you all hate the Wings so much? They beat the Canes fair and square in the Finals. They didn't brutalize any of your players, etc. They won, since when does that become a reason to hate something so much. I'm a Wings fan and I still respect the Ducks.
I can understand hating Shanahan after the Hartford thing, but...?????
Being so happy a team is out just for the sake of it does not make sense to me. In fact it seems ridiculous.

I think that this question has been answered earlier in this thread, actually.
But I personally dislike them because of the sense of entitlement that I feel exudes from the organization... that all they have to do to win is have expensive Hall-of-Famers. I tend to be an underdog sort of gal anyhow, I suppose, and the Wings are the antithesis of an underdog. Also, I think that we absorbed so much "the South doesn't deserve hockey" ridicule that the Wings (and the Leafs) inspired a lot of hatred from those of us down here. If they and the media had taken us (or the Ducks) seriously and not cracked so many Opie jokes, we might not have as many ill feelings.

The Wings have (or had) the chemistry. The Rangers have a huge list of high priced, superstars and they can't win. The Wings did more.
And they themselves didn't crack these jokes. It was the media.
I guess I'm just a little on the broken side right now and I can't think after having only 3 hours of sleep and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I am sorry that your team lost, and that you are upset about it. But this is a Canes board, and we put up with a lot of crap last year about not deserving to make the finals, so some of us do identify with the Ducks.
And finally, you are welcome here, and we aren't meaning any of our happiness to rub salt in your wounds. <sends big hug>

Ex-freakin'-actly. Slam my team, that's one thing....it's expected. But the Detroit media slammed my town, my state, and my heritage. I didn't like the Wings before last year....and I hate them now. If it makes you feel any better I hate the Leafs more.
I'm really sorry to Wings fans but you must understand that throughout the league there are many, many fans of small-market, underdog teams that are gonna hate the Wings. They are the closest thing to a dynasty we've had in the league for a while now and that automatically means other fans are gonna hate them. Believe me...this is not the only NHL team's MB that is partying today over the Wings being swept.
The Wings usually dominate and have won how many Cups in the past ten years? Isn't that enough for you? Why do we have to feel sorry that the Wings exited the playoffs in the first round for the first time in I don't know how long? They'll be back next year more than likely. Sorry if we aren't upset they are gone this year.
EDIT: Sends big hug along with Kat's. Believe me.....we know how you feel. Our team was #30 this year and lost the Cup to your team last year.

Yes, adding to that I was planning on pulling for the Ducks no matter who the faced in the playoffs after watching a few games this season (most notably the one early season where they lost to the Wings). I guess it's a bit of a inter-conference rivalry between the Wings and the Canes after meeting in the finals. I still respected them after the finals and recognized that the better team won but after seeing the regular season game and their dirty play towards the end of the first period coupled with the never-ending whining done moments after the game by the Red Wings players to the media I changed my mind. I had gone into that game expecting the possibility of a blowout win by the Wings but hoping for the best for the Canes. It just made me mad that by the end of the first period the Wings were not just beating the Canes but brutally assualting our players. I also hate Chelios' for his comments etc.
To be brutally honest, I just don't like the smug look they give off. But they are all absolutely unbelievable hockey players with the young talent they've got they should be right back in the mix of things next season.
One thing that sticks out in my mind though is the uncalled brutalization of Tommy Westlund by Jiri Fischer in game 4 of the finals. I didn't like that.

When we were in the playoffs...the whole stinking city of Detroit made fun of everything from our town, our team to us, the fans!! We were a joke....Mayberry..Andy and Barney.. to the hockey world..a fluke..because HOCKEY TOWN said so!! Detroit sucks in my opinion and always will....I will never have any respect for them after the way they looked down their noses at us last year....

Yeah, the comments offended me too at first, especially the hayseed references. But, it doesn't bother me anymore at all ~ in fact, I laugh when I here an opposing team play the Andy Griffith theme at us during away games, because #1. it's FUNNY, and #2. they can say we're all off of Hee Haw, but that doesn't make it the truth. The thing about hockey is you have to have a thick skin about the teasing and the comments, otherwise, you'll be angry at EVERYONE, and honestly, that's just too much energy for me to expend. So, not to say that some of the remarks don't irritate me, but I try to remember that it's the small-minded people in the world who make those kind of ridiculous jokes in the first place.
But, by and large, I want to enjoy the WHOLE hockey experience, so I won't limit myself by hating on an entire team just because their fans or some of their players can't act right. I just remember who the offenders are, and make a mental note to bypass them.

Well said!! The Redwings are very skilled and are a good team, but they're just a litte too whiny for me. Like you said, after the game this season they made it very clear that they thought we only won because of "poor referring". I mean look at Weekes, if it weren't for them, he never would have gotten his concussion. Plus some of the players (*coughCHELIOScough*) have disrespected our team and it's players. I just think some of the stuff they do is definatly uncalled for...hope ya understand babycaniac!! :spin:

Hating a team is part of the whole hockey experience for me. In all honesty, if Detroit, Toronto and Boston all go down in the 1st round (which I'm hoping for) the playoffs won't be quite as exciting to me because there won't be any teams in it that I love to hate anymore.
I'm hoping this won't offend anyone and I'm sorry if it does. Most Detroit fans are just pissed off because they've forgotten what it feels like to lose badly. The rest of the NHL welcomes you to the club.

Good point, Chicks. Sometimes the love-to-hate-you thing is a theraputic benefit. ( we know how fond you are of Darcy " SideShow Bob" Tucker :vamp: ) I just don't want people on this board who pull for other teams to feel like they have to take a defensive stance with us, but at the same time I think it's absolutely fair for everyone to say what they think without having to be concerned about others getting hurt feelings. *sigh* Make love, not war. hehehehh I don't know if that's the correct pithy saying, but my brain is fried.

RIVALRIES people. That's what sports are about. You know why tons of people don't go to Canes/Atlanta games, but DO go to Canes/Toronto games? RIVALRY. And rivalries are grown out of hatred.
I've utterly hated lots of teams in my time...
I won't say I *hate* detroit. but I will say I'm elated to watch them be swept by a Disney team.
SHC was right on the money when she talked about them being a dynasty. dynasties suck. I'm damn tired of watching the wings get to the finals. So your team was swept in the first round.
Try being fanatical about a team who hasn't gotten by the first round in several years. or hasn't reached the cup in a handful of years. or maybe who's only reached the cup once. or maybe even one who's never gotten close.
Sorry, I have NO empathy for people whining about why everyone is picking on Detroit. to be honest with you... that kind of behavior is doing nothing to convince me I should feel sorry for Wings fans. (Rio and Lady excluded, just cuz I love y'all)
Stop now, before you start being compared to Toronto fans.

Teams that continuously win, are the worst when they finally come back to reality and have some bad seasons... and finally...rivalry is what it is all about....I try not to step on anyone's toes too much in here about their team..if it is not the Canes...or my Wolfpack.. ;) but life would be boring if everyone loved the same things...right?? :spin:

Thanks for the explanations...
I guess, I just don't see how a rivalry was born.
But, whatever I guess. And I love NC, and was sad to see the media acting like that. I have family living in North Carolina and I've never seen a nicer place!!
As far as hating teams...the only team I really hate is the Avs. But I really don't hate them that much anymore since Claude Lemieux left.
And I think one of the reasons the Canes didn't make the playoffs and the Wings got out so quickly is the fault of the NHL and their damn scheduling. These two teams had TWO AND HALF MONTHS off...that's it!! And then they were playing 3, sometimes 4 games a week. The NHL needs to do something because teams that go all the way seem to be having some problems...
I didn't want to make anyone feel sorry for Wings fans, I know you guys wouldn't be the people to ask for that. I just wanted to try to understand why you hated them so much. I hope I didn't offend anyone, I guess I'll never know until I move away from Detroit.

As a little footnote to this series, Chelios was the only player on the ice for game 4 that did not shake hands with any member of the opposing team. How totally and completely disrespectful! Here's an excerpt from the article:
"Veteran Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios raised some eyebrows after Wednesday night's series-clinching, 3-2 Ducks overtime victory by not participating in the traditional post-series handshake line.
Along with several teammates, including captain Steve Yzerman and Brett Hull, Chelios went to the Ducks bench to congratulate Babcock.
Chelios, though, headed straight from there to the Detroit locker room.
Neither Babcock nor Ducks general manager Bryan Murray took any offense at Chelios' actions.
"That's Chris," Murray said. "I don't know that he's ever shaken hands, other than if he won."
And here's another quote from it with very, very nice words from Yzerman who is definitely a good sport:
"Yzerman, who played under Murray during his three seasons as coach of the Red Wings, and Detroit center Igor Larionov, as well as Red Wings general manager Ken Holland and associate coach Barry Smith, sought out Murray for congratulations.
Yzerman left an interesting message.
"He said, 'You have an awfully good team,'" Murray reported.
"He said, 'You guys can go as far as you want to go.' He said, 'The work ethic, the structure, the way your defense is, you certainly deserved to win the series.'
"I think that's the feeling in our room, that we are comparable," Murray said. "We're not saying we're going to win, but we're going to compete every night no matter who we play."

While I'm obviously not a fan of any of the Wings' players...I do like Yzerman. Easily one of the classiest of the Red Wings and their Hall of Fame players. But Chelios...we are talking about someone who said Francis is the second worst diver in the NHL, supposedly has spat on an autograph seeker, and that more than likely is the tip of the iceberg along with his not shaking the winning team's hands. How I wish that guy would retire...

Steve Yzerman and Ron Francis are the best captains in the league, IMO. They both have earned the respect of coaches, players, and officials and conduct themselves beautifully.
It will be interesting to see if the younger, hot heads who are captains (see Thornton, Joe) will mature into this mold or will change the mold of captains in the league. Changing the Yzerman/Francis model would be a big mistake IMO.

NOTHING Chelios or Shanahan does surprises me...glad the rest of the Wings had the class to shake hands and some of them made nice comments about the Ducks..
..and about Thornton, it is hard to look at that "C" on his jersey when he is hitting and fighting as often as he does...I can't imagine Ronnie acting like that at all...even in his much younger days...I like fights..they are fun to watch..but I think the captain needs to set a good example!!

This is total bs. Chelios is a chump and obviously considers himself more important than his teammates that managed to suck it up and participate in a great tradition. I could say more, but I won't. I'll just hate Chelios. Does the guy have kids? Great example.
He might want to read up on sportsmanship:
sports·man·ship n.
The fact or practice of participating in sports or a sport.
Conduct and attitude considered as befitting participants in sports, especially fair play, courtesy, striving spirit, and grace in losing.

and maybe if players/coaches didn't make excuses for him, he wouldn't feel so free to snub the hand shaking tradition. what ever happened to graciousness in losing? don't have to be happy about it, but you do have to be an adult. who couldn't shake hands and make nice talk after you win

Chelios definitely DESERVES to be wearing the uniform of the great and mighty Whiners.
class act dude. :roll:
sidenote- we play volleyball, and after each game (3 games in a match), we go through the line with "good game" "good game" etc...
every once in awhile we get a team who just walks off the court. I can honestly say there is nothing more disrespectful than that.
unfortunately in hockey, after the handshake deal... you'd have to wait until next season for any heavy hits you want to lay.
for me, if a team does that.. I just hope I get some good sets the following game and start picking people off, one by one.
some people just have no idea what sportsmanship is about. you'd think professional athletes would... but then again, lots of them prove their idiocy on a daily basis.

As a Wings fan, I personally think that it was extremly shoddy of Chelios not to go and congratulate the Ducks. I tried to justify other crap he's pulled, but this incident bothers me because he acts like he is better than the Ducks, which the Ducks proved is untrue. Throughout the short series he royally pissed me off, by the fact that he didn't seem to give a crap how he played. He then had the audacity to make some comment to the Detroit Free Press, about how this season was a complete waste. Obviously, the season didn't turn out that great in the end, but the only thing I find a waste was the fact that his season was a waste compared to last. Fortunately, at least there are players like Steve Yzerman and even Nick Lidstrom who can somewhat make up for the unsportsmanship of players like Chelios.

Exclusive: Q & A with J-S Giguere
April 24, 2003
The Hockey News' senior writer, Mike Brophy, recently spoke with the NHL's hottest goaltender, Anaheim's J-S Giguere. Their conversation included topics such as sweeping the Red Wings, how he felt about being traded and why his career has taken a turn for the better.
THN: Were you surprised that your team eliminated Detroit?
Giguere: Well, to be honest, I was surprised we beat them in four games, but I’m not surprised we won the series. Everybody in our dressing room was pretty confident that we had a chance to win. We were a very well prepared group. Once you are prepared, you know what is coming at you and then you have to focus on the game. That’s what we did. We tried to take it to them as much as possible and we ended up being successful.
THN: When you joined the Mighty Ducks three years ago, you were re-united with your old hockey school instructor Francois Allaire who is now your goalie coach. How has he helped you?
Giguere: He has helped my game tremendously. When I came here from Calgary I was technically making so many mistakes. He brought my game back to being a much more simple style of play. It’s much easier for me to play now than it was in the past
THN: Did being traded by Calgary for a second round pick bother you?
Giguere: It was a hockey decision. They needed a goalie who was ready to play in the NHL and I don’t think I was ready. Not only that, they were probably going to lose me in the expansion draft so at least they got something back. I was kind of excited to get out of there because things weren’t going well at all. I looked at it as a new beginning. I was excited about being in Anaheim and being able to work with Francois.
THN: What was your frame of mind like during your last days with the Flames?
Giguere: You always want to be in the NHL when you are in the minors. There were times in Calgary when I was really frustrated. I had pretty much lost all the confidence I had in my game. Things weren’t going well in the minors. I couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It was very scary. After my last year in Saint John I was really scared. I didn’t know what was going to happen with me. I pretty much thought that I wasn’t going to make it in Calgary. Or anywhere else for that matter.
THN: Where did you think your career was headed?
Giguere: At that point I wasn’t sure that I was going to be an NHL goaltender. I didn’t think I was going to make it. It was really a tough time for me. You think you have the talent to do it, but you just can’t get it together. You don’t know how to put it together when you are young. You’re looking for answers.
Martin Biron, Marc Denis and all those guys that I played against were already in the NHL and I was scrambling in the minors and not playing very well. It was frustrating.
THN: Things turned around with the trade to Anaheim?
Giguere: When I got traded to Anaheim, that summer Francois called me and asked me to go to his hockey school to help him. Right away he corrected my game. he showed me stuff I was doing wrong.
I was working with the kids, demonstrating what to do, but at the same time it was a good way for me to learn. Right then and there I was already happy to be with Anaheim.
I went to training camp and they felt like I still needed to work on my game. Anaheim sent me to the minors and gave me a lot of games. I got my confidence back. When I finally got called up I felt like I was ready to face the challenge whereas in Calgary when I got called up, I never felt comfortable. I felt like I wasn’t ready to answer the bell. I felt like if I went into the game I would screw up and I’d be back in the minors. It’s a tough feeling when you’re not ready. At that time I thought I was, but looking back I know I wasn’t.
THN: How long before you knew you had a real shot at making it in the NHL with the Ducks?
Giguere: The first year they called me up once for two games and then sent me back. Right after Christmas they called me up and put Dominic Roussel on waivers and they told me I was here to stay until the end of the season to learn. It was a good feeling being able to say you are part of an NHL team.
THN: You shared the crease with Steve Shields last season.
Giguere: It was kind of different. We had Steve Shields with me here and we never knew what was going to happen; who was going to play more. I took it as a learning experience. Every time I was on the ice I tried to make as many stops as possible, whether it was in practice, in warmup or in a game. I tried to always have a positive attitude. It ended up being a pretty good year for me.
THN: Any change in the way you approach the game now as a bona fide No. 1 goalie?
Giguere: I still look at the game the same way. Whenever you play you just have to play as hard as you can...make as many saves as you can. As the No. 1 goalie I try to practice as hard as I could; make as many saves as I could.
THN: Many goalies are tightly wound and unapproachable, but you seem relaxed...even on game days.
Giguere: I don’t mind talking to people on game day. I find it kind of silly when goalies say they can’t talk to people because they have a game that night. I want to try to enjoy this as much as possible. If you can’t talk to people for 82 days of the year, what fun is that?
THN: You had never appeared in the NHL playoffs before, where there butterflies in the stomach?
Giguere: A few, but not as many as I thought there might be. I think we were so prepared for Detroit The coaching staff did a great job at getting us ready. As far as the goaltending was concerned, we went over videos of what the Wings do. I knew what they were going to bring to us and I was pretty confident in my game that I could make saves on what they were going to bring.
THN: Was there one particular red Wing that you felt you had to zero in on?
Giguere: Brett Hull. Obviously they love to set him up for one-timers so we had to be aware of that. He’s always in a place where nobody sees him. Then he sneaks up and they somehow find him so I was always aware of who was on the ice at all times.
THN: Is facing Detroit different than facing other teams?
Giguere: They are a great team, but no, I don’t think it’s any different. It’s a hockey game and you have to battle really hard to win. The same situations arise with any team that you play.
THN: the Red Wings seemed frustrated at not being able to score. Did anyone on the Wings say anything to you during the games? was there any trash talk going on?
Giguere: No they didn’t. I think it’s because they’re an older bunch of guys and they’re past that type of thing. Nobody said a word to me.
THN: Could you sense their frustration as the series wore on?
Giguere: A little bit, but i think they were more frustrated by the fact we were playing very well defensively and there wasn’t any room for them to skate in our zone. As it went on they couldn’t get many scoring chances and I think that got them more frustrated.
THN: Obviously you didn’t beat the Wings on your own. Tell us about your team.
Giguere: I think our defense is very underrated and the longer the series went, the better we played. There were hardly any difficult saves to make. Every time I would make a save, the rebound would be cleared.
THN: Who do you describe your style?
Giguere: I’m not a big reflex goaltender. I try to be as simple as possible and make as many saves as possible with my stomach. Your stomach is the biggest part of your body. Nothing can go through your stomach. There’s always something that can go over or under your glove, but if you can put your stomach between the net and the puck all the time, then you give yourself a better chance to stop it.

How about all the games he played in Calgary and Anaheim? Or do those not count simply because it wasn't in Hartford? Giguere has had consistency problems for YEARS. If manglement here thought that he could have gotten it worked out in Greensboro, don't you think he would have come here with the team?
If you seriously believe that Jean-Sebastien Giguere would be doing for us now what he's currently doing for the Ducks, then I have a bridge and some swampland to sell you.
Sheesh.

I don't know that you can say, with any degree of certainty, that if he WAS here, that he wouldn't be doing what he has for the ducks.
it's all speculation. our org let a young kid go... and several years later he has a fantastic season. who's to say what 'coulda' been. who's to say whether or not he's a flash in the pan, or the real deal?

Sounds like he's gotten most of his positioning problems taken care of now that he has a good goalie coach. I think he'll be fine as long as he doesn't revert back to his old ways.
I hate to speculate on what might have been. Nobody says we can't get him back anyway. As a matter of fact....isn't somebody here already on the case? ;)

Speaking of Giguere...didn't the Canes also let Legace, now currently a good backup for Detroit, go around the same time as Giguere? There's another "What could have been..." deal right there, especially considering that Legace's numbers over this season were slightly better than Cujo's...

Um, take your ritalin.
The fact that one of the men in manglement is a former goalie, I figured it wouldn't be much of a stretch for him to figure out that this kid needed some seasoning from a goaltending coach, rather than just giving up on him. I am not saying that he is or could have been "The Answer", I was just curious as to WHY we gave up on him so quickly when it has become very apparent that he was in need of a little help.
Why didn't he get that in Hartford, I don't know. Why didn't he get that in Calgary, I don't know. Why didn't he get that until he got Anaheim, I don't know, but they were able to bring out of him what others couldn't or wouldn't see, and it just disturbs me that the effort wasn't put in. So keep your bridge and swampland and back off. :p

I posted it in a thread here a bit ago, just wanted to make sure you saw it. It's a very interesting read about Giguere and a bit behind the why's as to him being traded around.
I really can't wait to see him and the Ducks play tonight. All his comments have made him seem incredibly calm, especially when faced with the allegations Claude Lumieux presented.

friendly debate is cool.. please take the personal jabs out of it though. No one needs swampland or ritalin! This is all speculation so no one can be right...
As far as my Opinion...
I don't see how his inconsistencies with Anaheim and Calgary are relevant since we are talking about why we let him go.. Maybe that contributed to it if his confidence was shot by being thrown out after only 8 games? If we're willing to give Tanabe years and years because it takes a while for defensemen to mature, than it seems like we owe a young, perspective goalie more than 8 games? Just another baby with the bath water I guess.
Though on the other hand, he credits his current coach with simplifying his style and getting him where he is.. if we kept him, he could still be here flopping around not getting the instruction he needs... we shall never know.

"The fact that one of the men in manglement is a former goalie"
was he in the system after PK bought the team or before? I can not keep all the dates of who owned what when straight.
I do sometimes find myself thinking why did they let insert player here go only to later find out it was pre-PK and JR.
just asking.

say by some minor miracle Bates turns into a 40-goal-scorer for the next few years, while Vrbata lingers around 20/yr. people'd be raising hell about that trade.
you trade "stuck" players, in hopes that you can find someone that will fit your system. in turn the player you deal away sometimes eventually finds a system they fit into.
it's not as easy as saying Player A is slightly worse than Player B, so let's see if we can pull the trigger on that. Find me an org that has never 'let one get away'.

Bruno's been a gem, no question--but I'm not willing to write Brendl off just yet. The guy was playing hurt (and frankly I think Clarke knowingly stuck us with damaged goods), and he's gotten surgery on his knees so that he can actually play. I'm reserving judgement on him until after I've had a chance to watch him play more next season.

and yeah JR played on the Wings. He was selected by the Detroit Red Wings round 1 #10 overall 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. You can see his career stats here: http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/players/data03/00004713.html
1980 Yearbook, p. 106) ]"Those of us who cheer the underdog issued a long, loud ovation for goalie Jim Rutherford when the final second ticked off at the Olympia last April 8. Jim Rutherford had collected his first shutout of the season - even if it was in the final game - by blanking Montreal 1-0 to deprive the Canadiens of the overall points title. It was a personal triumph for Rutherford, who had been unjustly snubbed after the arrival of Rogie Vachon and the ensuing court problems which made the signing of the free agent netminder more trouble than it was worth...And when the Kings turned down the [compensation package for Vachon involving Rutherford], Rutherford ended up staying with the Red Wings, who - at least implicitly - had said they considered him expendable. So he sat on the bench and watched Vachon struggle through most of the first half (at one point watching Vachon start 11 consecutive games) before it became clear that Rutherford had just an important a place with the team as did his high-priced counterpart. By season's end, it was Vachon who was watching. Rutherford played 13 consecutive games and 17 of the last 19 in Detroit's nightmare season. Late in the year, Vachon's name was on the waiver wire, and in April, in that last game against the Canadiens, Rutherford unquestionably earned his right to thumb his nose at management and say "Take that!". Of course, he didn't, because Jim Rutherford has as much class as he has ability. He suffered the slights (in silence, for the most part) while remaining secure and confident that when he was called upon, he would be ready."
TRANSACTIONS:

Yikes! Darn that "view newest post" button! From the look of the logos, did he play for the Wings or an affiliate?
As an aside, when writing a message the little emoticons on the left are all happily moving until I select one. It's like they're thinking "Oh no! She picked one! Stop so we're not seen!" Is it just me?! :)

and yeah JR played on the Wings.

For real! Those old masks were unbelievably creepy. If you think about it, it was probably excellent psychology ~ creeping out the opposing team.

Just something cool too add... the Wings lost in round 1 after winning the Cup, but here are the only teams ever to win the Cup, and miss the playoffs completely the next year:
Detroit in 1938
Chicago in 1939
Montreal in 1970
New Jersey in 1996...
and Toronto sure seems to have a knack for missing the playoffs the year after a Cup:
Toronto Arenas in 1919
Toronto St. Pats in 1923
Toronto Maple Leafs in 1946
Toronto Maple Leafs in 1968
Just thought that was kinda cool.

It's eerily weird how the Detroit Free Press just stopped reporting hockey pretty much after the wings were swept. If under sports, you go to the first category called The Puck, this is the main article:

THE WEEK AHEAD: Ducks haven't given Wings any trouble in the playoffs
April 10, 2003
BY HELENE ST. JAMES
FREE PRESS COLUMNIST
Though the Red Wings ceded guaranteed home-ice advantage through the conference finals when they lost to Chicago Sunday, they gained the easier opponent.
A victory would have delivered Edmonton to Joe Louis Arena; instead, Detroit ended up with Anaheim, which the Wings swept in the 1997 and '99 playoffs. And though the Ducks are no longer a one-line team, they're still less of a threat than the Oilers or the Minnesota Wild. The Oilers always play the Wings tough, and the Wild split the season series with Detroit, 2-2, thanks to its disciplined devotion to defense.
The Ducks, on the other hand, could go under fast. Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere was a stand-up guy in the regular season but there are nicer ways to be introduced to the NHL playoffs than by playing the defending champions. Giguere was 1-3 against Detroit this season; surprisingly, his win came in the only game Detroit forced him to deal with the ultra-hot Henrik Zetterberg-Pavel Datsyuk-Brett Hull line. The Ducks won the March 9 game at home, 4-1.
Giguere hasn't played poorly against the Wings -- he gave up four goals on 32 shots Oct. 13, but only two goals on 45 shots Nov. 15 and two goals on 27 shots Dec. 3. To beat them four times, though, is a lot to ask.
And it's not like Giguere will be able to count on his defense to turn away the Wings. The Ducks' first pairing consists of the serviceable Keith Carney and Niclas Havelid. On the second pair, Sandis Ozolinsh sometimes hurts his team as much as he helps it with his willingness to jump up in the play. Third-pair anchor Fredrik Olausson spent last season with Nicklas Lidstrom and lifted the Stanley Cup in June; this spring, he draws Vitaly Vishnevski as his partner -- and most likely will be back in Sweden by May.
There's a little more intrigue up front. Remember when the Ducks' offense consisted of Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne on a line with Steve Rucchin in the middle, or, in an attempt to fool opponents, Kariya on one line and Selanne on another? Either way, shut down those two and the Ducks were done. But now Kariya is getting passes from ex-Wing Adam Oates and has sniper Petr Sykora on the other wing, and Rucchin is dishing the puck to Rob Niedermayer and Mike Leclerc.
Together, they have helped get their club back into the playoffs for the first time in four years, and now they face the daunting task of delivering the Ducks from the one team that always has made them extinct.

Cup takes a trip to the Garden

EAST RUTHERFORD - The Devils made the rounds with the Stanley Cup between capturing it Monday night and bringing it back to Continental Arena for Saturday afternoon's championship celebration.
They made appearances with the Cup at the NBA Finals and Yankee Stadium, on "Late Show with David Letterman," and at the NHL awards ceremony in Toronto.
On Tuesday night, however, some players enjoyed a more private excursion to Manhattan to party with Lord Stanley's prize. Among the late-night stops was one outside Madison Square Garden, the home of the Rangers.
"We went to all the New York City landmarks, the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden," right wing Turner Stevenson said Saturday. "It was very late. No one was there."
SURGERY FOR PANDOLFO: Jay Pandolfo concealed his injury throughout the Stanley Cup Finals, but a light cast on the left hand of the Devils' left wing Saturday revealed that he had a broken left thumb. Pandolfo said he fractured his thumb in Game 1 of the Finals against Anaheim and had to have the pain numbed with an injection before each game so he could play. He will undergo surgery Monday to have two pins inserted in the thumb.
Pandolfo also admitted he had been playing with a sprained knee since the Eastern Conference finals.
Stevenson said his strained groin muscle would not require surgery. Before returning for Game 5 of the Finals, Stevenson underwent an MRI, which revealed he did not have a muscle tear.
"It just needs rest," Stevenson said.
BUSINESS NEWS: The Devils' most prominent potential unrestricted free agents are Ken Daneyko and Joe Nieuwendyk. Daneyko, 39, said he would sit down with general manager Lou Lamoriello in the next two weeks to make his final decision, but was leaning toward retirement. Nieuwendyk, 36, seems destined to at least test the market, beginning July 1.
Jim McKenzie, Tommy Albelin, and Pascal Rheaume also are slated to become unrestricted free agents. All three have expressed a desire to return to New Jersey next season. ... The Devils have until June 30 to pick up the two option years ($2.5 million per season) on defenseman Richard Smehlik's contract. His future will likely hinge heavily on Daneyko's decision. ... Left wing Jeff Friesen, a potential restricted free agent, said he will probably not file for arbitration.

I think that it was kind of dumb they stopped sending out The Puck in every Thursday paper after the Wings got eliminated. The Puck didn't really talk about the Wings, it basically talked about other NHL teams, college teams, and then minor league teams. So I agree that it was weird. But in the regular sports section it did cover the other remaining teams in the playoffs, after the Wings were out.

SHOOTING FOR THE FIVE HOLE? Red Wings star Sergei Fedorov escaped injury when, returning to his Detroit-area home, he plowed his car into a tree. No charges have been filed. This makes Fedorov the first Red Wing to hit anything not named Jean-Sebastian Giguere since mid-April.
