best of 7 series, so unless you're just talking about the first game, I'd guess you mean 4-0.
but, saying you want Detroit to win will not draw much support around these parts. :p
and I have no idea what your patriotic statement was about. ?

ah, should've guessed. teams don't matter, just players. gotcha. ;)
I for one will be pulling for the Ducks, though I think it'll be a minor miracle if they take out detroit.

you think now he only thinks of his latvian players. yes ok but always remember that the NHL is far, far away from me, i can't see any game i actually see nothing of it.
what the nhl is for me is the german hockey for you.
you don't know much about it so you don't feel with the teams....blabla

Mighty Ducks > Red Wings
I want the Ducks to win, one reason is because of Giguere, he's a pretty good goalie and I became a fan of his this season.

yes, I understand that mikus, and your point is well taken...
the difference is you spend a good amount of time on boards related to the NHL. which, unless I think about it... means that you must pay attention somewhat to the teams. yet, you don't. all that matters is getting latvian players back in time for the worlds.
it's hard for me to take sometimes. it seems if you don't care about the teams, why waste so much time on these boards? ;)
ps- in an effort to keep this somewhat on topic... Anaheim is going to need some major major production in this series.
Anaheim has made the Playoffs three times in its history, meeting Detroit each time. This time, Detroit is the second seed and Anaheim is slotted at No. 7.
Detroit has taken each of the previous two postseason meetings, sweeping the Ducks in the 1999 Western Conference Quarterfinals and the 1997 Western Conference Semifinals. Anaheim has been outscored 30-14 in those eight games, but is a much deeper team this year. In fact, in the four-game season series, Anaheim scored eight goals to the Red Wings' nine in losing the series, 3-1.

yes i'm interested in the nhl. and i spend my time here. i just have no "relation" to the players. i can't see them i can't get autographs can't go to practices. i can't do anything. that's the point. it's a pity that nhl is not popular here but there's nothing i can do about it. the only thing i can do is pay attention what you're talking and watch the highlights on nhl.com. that's all. you can't see anything here in tv.
sometimes they show a few highlights on a sportschannel when sturm or hecht have scored a goal or when kolzig has a shutouit or something. but that's really all.
germany would be the hell for you that's for sure  ;)

I think that the most important part of that article is pointing out that Anaehim has a much deeper team this year. Earlier on in the season (about a week in) I watched an Anaheim/Red Wings game that made me an Anaheim fan. I was wanting to see any team Detroit. Anaheim lost that game but they showed a lot of heart in it.... I believe Anaheim beat Detroit at least once this season as well though. Sure, it was only the regular season and heart alone can't net you a unbelievably stunning upset but I think it will be a close well-fought series. Horrible luck for Anaheim having to play Detroit in all of it's post-season appearances though...... I certainly think they're capable of winning a game though. Unfortunately for us anti-Detroit folk, Detroit has really come together late in the season. Yeah, they didn't do so hot in their last few games which cost them the number one seed but the most important cog, Curtis Joseph is finally doing his job.
Giguere will need to be outstanding in this series. When the smoke clears though, I think Anaheim will not only win one game, but two.
Detroit gets the 4-2 series win is my prediction. Though I would LOVE to see Anaheim give them an early exit!

What I said in the Wild/Avs thread can go here too.
Ducks over Wings - One possible Stanley Cup.
A shocked and stunned Barry Melrose. - Priceless.
Ducks in seven...please prove to me that you're the perfect upset team like I think you are Ducks, and immediately stop Detroit from being on their way to a back-to-back.

Go Ducks! Down with the Wings!
*tsk tsk* Crazy No Pants!!! :D
I had hoped the Wings would play-off against the Oilers first, but losing to the Blackhawks set the Wings up against the Ducks and the Ducks have NOT been willing to be pushed around this season. I think it'll be a very stiff fight, which could honestly go either way, esp if the Wings get lazy (they've been looking half-baked their past few outings). I still think the Wings will prevail over Anaheim, at any rate.

I think this entire series depends on how CuJo plays. He has been consistently inconsistent, and I could see the Ducks taking this in 7 if that happens.
However, they're going to need reliable players (i.e., Kariya, etc.) to continue to be reliable. Kinda like the Canes last year... everybody (well, ALMOST everybody) who was SUPPOSED to score, DID. The result was amazing success.

Unfortunately, I think your right about the goalie situation for Detroit. If Cujo breaks down, then they're gonna be in trouble.
I think all of you goodly folks on this board are ever aware of the twins' love for the tasty Wings , and yet you love us both anyway. You are all saints.

I think I'll expand on what The Masked One said....
"Red Wings Suck" bumper sticker...$5
Tickets to Arrowhead Pond: $120
Curtis Joseph's Salary: $10,000,000
The look on Barry Melrose's moronic face when the Ducks beat Detroit...PRICELESS.
There are some things in life money can't buy. For everything else, there's the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Proud first-round opponent of the Detroit Red Wings.

Thanks for the Caniacpanther. It broke back memories of a similar saying I saw on a billboard back during last year's Western Conference finals about Hasek's salary and how priceless it would be when the Avs beat the Wings.
I don't think that this is an insurmountable task for the Ducks. The first few games will be the most crucial at all though. If the Ducks can get at least a split out of the first few games I would say they stand more than a fighting chance. If Detroit takes both games things will be looking a little more gloomy. I want the Ducks to win but I went ahead and picked the Wings in 6 just to be safe though. It could happen though!

And I think it should be more like the look on Smellrose's face when the Wild beat the Avs... he may talk about the Wings a lot, but he's so pro Av (and Peter Forsberg) it makes me ill.

Baby's right. Melrose is an Avs fiend. Forsberg must be his favorite person besides Roy.
Over and above that, y'all may think that his dissing the Canes last season was personal, but I've heard the man slam Detroit and slam them hard, so I think Barry just says whatever Barry WANTS to say at the time. He was dissing Cujo hard core for awhile, then changed his mind and said the team was going all the way.
*shrugs*
He's a commentator. Not god. So what if he disses our teams? It doesn't make a hill of difference come game time, and look how well the Canes came through during the last play-offs. :smoke:

I'm with you Rio. I mentioned it before, if the in studio "analysts" didn't "pick a side" the commentary would become pretty boring: "both teams have a good shot at winning this game". They are paid to have an opinion - even if we hate it. Wonder how many folks get tired of Darren Pang saying nice things about the Canes.
I'm sure message boards the world over are churning out Barry bashes, which just feed his ego and keep him in hair gel all the more! ;)

I think Detroit loses this game. I don't think that anyone will score on Giguere the way he has been playing. Detroit had some "sure goals" that were stopped by him. Giguere has 61 saves.

I was thinking the same thing SHC. Loads of empty seats. What an absolutely amazing game this is........ Anaheim played wonderfully during regulation, came out flat during the first OT with Giguere making mindblowing saves (and getting a few bounces as well) but the Ducks really picked up the pace in the second OT. Though they were still certainly outshot, they definitely got their share of chances. Joseph looked a bit rusty on a couple of the saves too. I'm looking for this game to finally be the game where I see Detroit lose in triple OT. I've been waiting for it since June and thought I would have to wait years. The time is now.

I never thought that I would be so excited about the playoffs without the Canes in them, but I can honestly say that I am having just about as much fun as I did last postseason so far. This really IS hockey, SHC. :)
Quack! Quack! Quack!
P.S. Detroit's average age is 3 years older; I think that at first (i.e., first 2 OT periods), they had the advantage, but I think that with the way the Ducks are playing now, they will slowly gain momentum the further the game progresses.

See, I had fun, but could only attend one playoff game last year, because my parents couldn't buy tickets, so I had to use my own money; and by the time I had enough, it was the second round, and the cost was even a little higher; but I reallly meant fun in terms of enjoying the quality of play.

On the road to glory, ain't no turning back. It's got to be the Mighty Ducks on the quack attack! Look out! Clear the way! Ducks are here to stay! Ducks rock! Ducks rock! Mighty Ducks! Here come the Mighty Ducks burning up the ice! Just try and stop the Mighty Ducks, evil's going to pay the price! Here come the Mighty Ducks fighting for the goal! Let's hear it for the Mighty Ducks, it's time to rock and roll! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go...Ducks Rock! Mighty Ducks! Ducks Rock! Let's hear it for the Mighty Ducks! Mighty Ducks!
Ladies and gentlemen, you have just witnessed a rare moment in my showing that I know the entire Mighty Ducks' cartoon's theme song...but it is of course appropro. :D
One down, three more to go...and isn't it sweet that those Ducks have already made the Wings and their fans know what it was like to be a Cane and Caniac one fateful night in Raleigh...I love revenge. :D

Sorry. Not for me. I know this isn't a popular opinion here, but I'm let-down. A bad way to end a pretty terrible day here in Fuquay, esp because it was Kariya scoring the last goal. I don't like that guy at all. Anyone but him, but noooOOOOoooo...... To be fair though, I can certainly admire Giguere. That guy was AMAZING. Someone tear open that jersey and check for an S on his chest.....!! There was NO getting past him, not even with a Sherman tank!!

He was stunning, wasn't he!? That was a play-off level game for him, to be sure!! He was rock solid the whole game, even after he was starting to wear out. As a goalie fanatic, I hope to see more outta this guy in the future. :)

One problem with the game... I'm at school now (study hall; I don't have a real lunch period); and I'm feeling the effects of saving some of my HW for AFTER the Wings game. There's only so much work you can get done during intermission!

Tommy, I did the same thing! I was going to study for my Economics test when the game was supposed to end at about 9:15 but ended up not even starting till I believe a little after 12 when NHL Tonight was over! But what a game! I'm glad I watched it all the way through....
This will be a huge boost for Aneheim's confidence. To be outplayed that badly during the majority of OT but to still pull it off.... To their credit, I thought that the Ducks 2nd and 3rd periods were astonishing. I even remember one point where the Red Wings crowd was booing because Anaheim was controlling the puck in the Wings zone so much. Though Anaheim didn't convert on the man advantage they got numerous scoring chances on them. The game very well could have ended 2-1 or even 3-1 Anaheim in regulation! The Ducks were getting their sticks in lanes, stopping pass after pass after pass, and forcing the Wings to play their game.
Sure, they pulled a Jekyll and Hyde in OT but that can possibly be attributed to their unbelievable nervousness? Half the team had never played in a playoff game before and to have their first playoff game ever go into triple OT is astonishing.
But as long as Anaheim sticks to what they were doing in regulation I think they'll be fine. We need to keep in mind that the shots on goal were pretty much even before regulation ended. The only thing that stopped the game from ending with a little under a minute left in regulation is Joseph somehow getting the puck stuck in his pad!
The name of the game is to frustrate and I'm sure there were a lot of sticks broken, doors kicked, etc. in the Wings locker room that night knowing they had done all that work and not won.
No they know what the Canes felt like.
I don't think the Wings are stick a fork in them they're done by any means. But that loss certainly didn't help matters for them.

63 saves, this is just...i don't know what to say
I think I know, we're all a little jealous. He used to be a Whaler too.

Nice to know i'm not the only one who knew about Giguere being a former Whaler... :eek2:
Yeah.....tell me again WHY we got rid of him? Seems there are an awful lot of goalies out there that go on to be pretty darn good after they get the heck out of Harford/Raleigh.

Well they made what I would guess would be considered a good trade back in '97 to get Kidd/Roberts.
From NHL.com:
The Hartford Whalers drafted Giguere with the 13th overall selection of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft. In 1996-97, after playing in 50 games and posting a 28-19-3 record and 3.38 goals-against average in the QMJHL, Giguere earned an eight-game stint with the Whalers, in which he went 1-4 with a 3.65 GAA. In 1997, the Carolina Hurricanes -- formerly the Whalers -- traded Giguere and Andrew Cassels to the Calgary Flames for Gary Roberts and Trevor Kidd. Calgary moved Giguere to Anaheim in 2000, where Giguere worked toward becoming a franchise netminder. In 2001-02, the goalie played in 53 games, going 20-25-6 with a 2.12 GAA.

What a (long) game last night! Great action...Detroit dominated but Anaheim put themself in the right position in the right time. Good for them...and there couldn't be a better guy to score the game winner.
Detroit would be better off starting Legace. Cujo can be good but is too streaky. D-town needs consistancy.
If only we would have kept Legace...and Giguere for that matter.

Speaking of Kariya, what's Chelios' problem anyway? He seems to just be an all-around jerk and @**hole! Kariya was included in his little "biggest divers in the league" whinefest along with Francis. And in last month's Becket Hockey Collector they were running a feature on how easy (or hard) it is to get different player's autographs. It was doing the feature specifically on the Avalanche and the Red Wings. The basic gist of the article was that for the most part, all the players on both teams would give autographs out if they had the time with some having special circumstances (Roy only signs official NHLPA stuff, etc.)
Basically what it said about Chelios though is that he goes out of his way to insult whoever it is asking for his autograph young or old. I was told by a Red Wings fan over aim that him and his friends were trying to get Chelios' autograph after a big Red Wings win at Joe Louis Arena last season and he spat at them........ Now that's just crap. What's his problem? Not to mention him trying to bludgeon one of the Canes players with his stick at the Red Wings/Canes game this past season.......
I was really happy for Kariya getting that goal. For those that missed it, Kariya's comment to Chelios calling him one of the biggest divers in the league was "Well, I can't argue with Chris because he's always right."

Who pays his salary? That little kid trying to get his idol's autograph on a hockey card. It's sick how much people can become self-absorbed.

I highly doubt Chris would spit on someone. He may not like to sign autographs but he is civil and a decent human being (althought you may disagree with the last part). I've only heard good things about Cheli when people have met him. Yeah, he likes to sneak out so he can't sign, I don't agree with that. But Cheli would not spit on someone, his off ice demeanor is the exact opposite of how he acts on the ice.
Cujo played good, IMHO. The puck hit off about 700 things before landing nicely on Kariya's stick. There was nothing he could do, he'll rebound and so will the team.
Giggy (my nickname for him) was AWESOME!!!! But I'm going to have to agree with some people and say that his equipment looks a little large... but he still played magnificently, I was impressed.
The Wings will win Game 2. Whenever they lose a game they think they should win they come out flying. After they lost to Vancouver this season in OT after they were winning 4-1 they went 11-0-0-1 in the next 12 games. They are a group of veterans who know how to handle defeat, pressure, losses, you name it.

BabyCaniac, the spitting part was told to me by an online user so it's credibility may be in question but going out of his way to insult people looking for autographs is in print. I find that disgusting. Just my thoughts.
