I'm looking forward to this one too. The Wild can be a pretty explosive team when they're clicking. Roloson has provided some stellar goaltending (under 2 gaa...).
But, then there's the Avs... who have been winning even though they're playing avg hockey. Sure, avg for them is when Forsberg avg's only a point per game... or the top line "only" has 14 points in the last 8 games. my heart bleeds for them. lol
So, I think the power/depth of the Avs will overcome the wild. It could go 7 though if Minn. shows up.

Talk about trial by fire. Their first playoff appearance and they're up against the Avs. :eek2: Good luck to them.

I'm definitely excited about this series Guyute. I have similar feelings about this one as I do the Anaheim/Wings series. If the Wild are able to stick to their heavy on defense gameplan the Avs should get frustrated and start to panic. If they're able to blow the games open though, and the Wild stray to stray from their gameplan and try to fight back with fire of their own, I don't think they stand a chance. I say this is a possible stunning first round upset in the making but in the end a 4-3 series win for the Avs. Minnesota's got an excellent coach and team this year but I'm looking for Colorado to take a 3-1 series lead and then get frustrated the next two games as the Wild have nothing to lose but finally pull it off on home ice in game 7....

This is the upset that I picked to happen in the Western Conference....Wild over Colorado. I think Folg sums it up nicely above. It may take 7 games but I think the Wild can do it! And wouldn't it be great to see the look on Barry Melrose's face? :D

Wild over Avs - One possible Stanley Cup.
A shocked and stunned Barry Melrose. - Priceless.
Wild over Avs in seven...though if the Avs go on as predicted, I'll at least be happy for Bates.

Of course, I have to go w/the Avs here, although the Wild will probably make it tough on them. Avs in 7.

The Avs will take this one. Not in a bloodless coup, but take it they will. The Wild fans should be proud their team made it to the playoffs. Too bad they have to meet the Avs right out of the gate. That's like drawing gym class for first period. *blech*
I find the Wild to be a rather dull team to watch, and other than Roy (and naturally Bates :D) I don't have any love for the Avs either, particularly not Forsberg. ( grrrrrrr.... ) But the Wild just bore me so badly that I'd rather see the Avs win.

eh heeh ehehehhee....
OKAY, so I don't think the Avs are gonna lose, because the Wild are just too dull to be endured, and surely the cosmos must intervene. They're a GOOD team, but horribly dull to watch. And their jerseys make me feel vaguely displeased.
Besides, gotta give some lovin' to Batesy, but I won't say go Avs. :P

SHC...It was a total weak goal.
Play behind the net, came in front, kicked off of Roy (I think) with his back to it, and it.

Nice comment to the Mr. SHC. Is he an Irbe fan?
He pretty much is just not a fan of the several times that our players (read: Bates and Joe) have been called disinterested. He says he's not an Irbe fan per se but he thinks they've both had their stretches of suck this season and he thinks Weekes has been given the benefit of the doubt more often than Irbe. But that is a topic for another thread I suppose.
Roloson did look pretty good from what I saw of the game. Have these playoffs been marked by upsets so far or what? Maybe we sorta paved the way for the underdogs last year. But then, it is just the first game.

The commentators for the game (Steve Levy?) definitely likes Bates' style of play. It seemed like every shift he played, he got some kind of kudos. They kept remarking about how he is everywhere, but especially in front of the net. They dished his stats, but kept emphasizing that numbers can't tell the whole story. Wish more people in the Carolina organization realized that before coming down on him.
Great game for the Wild players and fans though. Way to stay in the fight.

Well, let's keep in mind that Bates is being put on a line with the likes of Joe Sakic and/or Peter Forsberg. And of course someone like Bates is going to do well with those guys...remember, Bates actually did well when he was put on a line with a versatile veteran in Brindy and a sharp shooter/grinder in Cole. Even though he was in a slump like the majority of his Canes teammates this season, Bates easily did a little better with Brindy and Cole before they were out for the count with injuries. The closest Bates came to that afterwards was the line featuring him and the Adams family...which overall generated mixed results. As much as I wish Bates had stayed here, the only way that could have happened is if two thirds of the BBC line weren't pinned down by injuries...with that said, I'm happy to see Bates getting along and playing well in Colorado. With the Canes turning towards a more offensive system next season, Vrbata will become every bit as much a perfect fit here as Bates with the Avs.

His playing well doesn't have anything to do with who he's on a line with. If you would actually watch a game, you'd see that he's being allowed to play his game and be in front of the net a lot. That's definitely where he belongs and if you'll remember, where he scored a number of his goals from last year. There is also no pressure on him to be a goal-scorer with the Avs, which has helped him regain his confidence in himself. You can get all that just by watching him...it also helps that I have a source VERY close to him with accurate info.

I would disagree that the line he's on doesn't matter. Of course it helps him that Sakic is his linemate. It would help almost any player to be on a line with Sakic or Forberg or several of the other Avs. That's what happens when you play on an elite team. If taking the pressure off his need to score has increased his confidence then great. The Canes needed him to score and he wasn't.
I hope he does well in Colorado and has a long career with them. I wish him only the best. That doesn't mean I think the trade was a bad decision.
And I do watch the games.

Bates is doing really good..and most important as batesb stated..he is happy and the pressure to score is off of him...I understood his job here was to be a presence and use his size to do what he needed to do...but all of a sudden Mo and JR decided his role should be different.. After all our scorers got hurt or faltered, Bates was the "whipping boy"...If the Avs make it to the final game, I hope Bates is the one that wins it for them... :)

Well said, Jeff O Rocks. I share your sentiments. Although I'd much rather be cheering on Carolina this spring, at least I will be keeping my eye on Bates. There are just some players that grab your attention even through trades. I haven't been much of an Avs fan (the time difference does make it difficult), but this year I guess I'll be in their corner. None of my other teams are still in the running.

lines don't matter?? huh. interesting take.
maybe we could ask Bayda... after playing on Ronnie and Jeff's line, and then being moved off of it. which line did he have more success on?
easy question. easy answer.
lines DO matter. even forgetting the fact that Sakic and Forsberg are two of the best in the game... and they might find Bates for more goals then he'd get here.
The Biggest part, is *they draw a crowd*. When Forsberg is hanging out on the side, middle of the circle, and Bates is down low. who do you think is double-teamed? probably not Bates.
that's why who else is on your line matters. Sakic and Forsberg draw 80% of the harassment/defense. Bates gets to play his game, down low... with much less attention then he'd get on the Adams' line.
there, now I can move on.

For those that like to discuss Forsberg and his diving, even the Denver Post is calling him on it:
Forsberg acting as if Avs shun obstruction (http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~104~1339664,00.html)
An excerpt:
Fortunately for Peter Forsberg, the NHL isn't putting out a weekly Hall of Shame list of "divers" in the playoffs, as it did down the stretch of the regular season.
If the NHL did, Forsberg would be on it for his bit of thespianship in the second period Saturday against the Wild.
Forsberg's arms flailed and he crashed to the ice, allegedly in response to a hit from Minnesota's teenage defenseman, Nick Schultz, who actually hit his bagel harder that morning when he buttered it.
Famed coach Lee Strasberg would have given Forsberg an F in his method acting class, and Olympic diver Greg Louganis would have scored it no better than a sumo wrestler's belly flop off a 3-meter board.

That Wild crowd is great. Minnesota really has the Avs looking shell shocked. Not to say with their skill level they can't still win, but they are really having to work for it. A game 7 is looking very likely in that series.
I think new blood in the conference finals and SCF would be great.

maybe Philly will take it in the first OT and then you can switch to the Avs. that game is still in intermission before the OT starts.
of course, if Philly and Toronto are true to form the are just getting started

This is perfect! When one game goes to intermission, the other game resumes!
Minnesota is going to experience an emotional extreme tonight. They are going to be exhuberent by beating Colorado and forcing a game7, or feel like throwing up in disgust after blowing a 2-0 lead in a few minutes and ending their season.

Gotta hand it to the Wild for hanging in this series. They could've just rolled over and played dead after game 4 like the Avs wanted them to but they didn't. Good for them. Starting Manny the past two games was a wise decision. No question he'll be in game 7.

well... they have no "current" superstars. Gaborik is WELL on his way. that kid gots mad skills. and both of their goaltenders have just been flat out awesome (Roloson for most of the regular season.. this isn't a fluke).
but yes, mostly they're just a very solid team.

Very true Guyute, but he ain't Jaromir Jagr yet. The kid can be among the best from what I've seen...but so can our very own Radim Vrbata! (At least I hope so...hasn't been Gaborik quality as of yet)
Steadiness wins....Fernandez and Roloson are just that.
It's guys like Richard Park who win games....they can not be counted out if they can have the consistancy they need from their goaltending duo. I would have never thought they could force a game 7...especially while missing their captain (Bombardir)...they've suprised me. And I think they could continue to.
Go Wild.

yes, steady goaltending, and surprises by guys like Park is why they've forced a game 7. been a great series fo sho.
