Thanks for starting all these threads by the way Guyute!

Though I certainly think New Jersey will take this series it should be very interesting. Boston has an incredible start followed a horrific midseason to late season but then finished off with a quick coaching change and a strong finish. Can that change and strong finish carry over into the playoffs? Possibly. Is Boston going with Hackett or Shields for the playoffs? I might be thinking differently after seeing game one but this matchup seems a bit lopsided. A heavily defensive, excellent team, with a stellar goaltender that played that way all season taking on a team that was just sort of there all season, not outstanding defense or offense, and goaltending troubles.... Boston seemed up to the challenge against New Jersey in their late season matchups though, at least able to hang with them. If Boston can grind out a game one win, I think New Jersey will take the series 4-2. If Boston loses game one I see a New Jersey sweep or 4-1 win.

yeah, I don't think Boston has much hope in this one. Jersey has been playing some inspired hockey lately. Brodeur isn't going to give a whole lot up... but Hackett or Shields probably will. I'll have to check, but Hackett has been listed as DTD for the last week. Shields has taken all of the starts. hasn't been playing bad... but not great either.

PS- you're welcome. figured it was the only way to keep everything in it's own place. hehe

Please forgive me hockey gods but I'm going with New Jersey in this one. I'm probably going to hockey hell for that but oh well. This one will go to 7, though. I also predict that there will be at least 3 games that are won by one goal.

Definitely the Devils. And somehow, I find myself NOT hating them lately. Maybe it's this one awesome NJ fan over at CH.com that has gotten me....I almost WANT to see them win! :eek2:

Devils and I'm betting in 5.

I see the Devils winning this match-up, though I think the teams are evenly paced. I think the real test will be in net. Shields isn't a slouch, but Marty Broduer is a puck-stopping fiend.

The synopsis: A Goalie Death Match will decide the winner.

There's no way that Boston is getting by Brodeur, especially after their second-half slump.

Devils in 6.

2-1. Go Bruins...

Just in favor of Ian Moran and Glen Murray (former Pens of course). I am disgusted with everyone else. Especially Thorton.

Well, that went as expected. The Devs over the Bruins. Like I thought, it was a goalie issue and for once, the Bruins weren't getting their scoring groove on. I must say in Shields' favor though that he did a great job. Against just about anyone else other than Marty, that game woulda belonged to Shields.

The same goes for Ottawa who haven't sold out game 2.

Maybe the fans got so bored by the "true offense" of Ottawa (aka limp-wristed Marquis of Queensbury style hockey) that they died. :D

John and Tripp said during one of the Canes' broadcasts this past season that the Canes managed to sell out more games than the New Jersey Devils, despite their obviously not doing quite as well as the Devils.

jersey has Never had good attendance. put that team almost anywhere else and they'd probably make money. the problem is, with most northern-jerseyians.... most of them follow NY sports.

and south jerseyians follow philly sports.

devils are kind of in limbo. it does suck for them. high quality team that no matter what they do, they can't fill their building.

(I saw that folgers :p )

Hmmm, I'm confused because I didn't type that! (The bit about maybe they were bored by Ottawa). I typed the bit about the same going for Ottawa who hadn't sold out game 2 which was then quoted in that post but the original message isn't there....odd!

Though New Jersey did win this game, I think this series may be closer than some of us think.... If not for Boston's blunder (centering the puck right to the Devils player) this game might have gone to OT which could have ended up with a Boston win. I'm interested to see what happens in game 2!

It is!! It was humorous to watch the rivalries amongst family and friends during championship games for baseball and football in NY. As for hockey, there are only a few of us who are fans and we are Devils fans (yes I am partial to the Devils so long as they do not play our 'Canes-after all, these last few years, I have been shown the light!! :D )

The NJD have a chance to go up 3-0 this afternoon. Brodeur is.....well Brodeur, and so far Boston has really looked over matched.

Go Devils.

I have always been a closet fan of the Devils when they aren't playing the Canes. Maybe because the style of play is similar.

Well, before this series there was some talk that if any lower seed was going to upset a higher seed it might be this series. That is now an impossibility. I see no miracle turnaround in this series where Boston magically rattles off four quick wins. After similar domination in games one through three 2 years ago though the Canes were able to get two quick wins to stun the devils and finally fell in game 6. I don't see that happening here though. New Jersey knows their system works and with Brodeur in there they only need one or two goals a need to get the win. I'd say barring some miracle this series ends in 4, New Jersey gets the sweep.

Wow, Brodeur just got BEAT tonight. Everone has their off nights though, and New Jersey's still got plenty of games left to wrap this series up in. Boston's not going to just lay over and die though as evidenced by their play all game long and the fire shown by them there at the end of the game. Game 5 should be very entertaining.

Might have been Hackett's last game, though I hope not...

Hackett pondering retirement
Canadian Press
4/18/2003

BOSTON (CP) - Jeff Hackett, citing a difficult year away from his family in London, Ont., says he'll let his wife and two children decide if he'll continue his NHL goaltending career.

Hackett can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. His children are 3 and 6.

"I'm not even thinking about next year," Hackett told the Boston Herald after the Bruins were eliminated from the NHL playoffs. "I don't know what I'm going to do.

"I'm going to sit down with my kids and see what they want to do. It's time for me to give back to them a little bit. They've sacrificed a lot, especially with me being away from them all season. I'm going to leave it up to them, especially the kids.

"If they want to settle down and stay in London, because we're definitely not going to live apart again, that's what I'll choose to do and that'll be it."

If Hackett makes this his last year for his family, then good for him :)
Sounds like a good guy with his priorities straight. He'll never regret that and his children will remember their daddy being around while they were growing up.

I hope whatever they choose, the whole family will be happy and healthy for many years to come.
