I, too, was curious about not putting in Patty D at some point (since Weekes is playing injured as it is, etc.). But the N&O says this morning that he may have a broken arm - sustained in practice yesterday.

I guess my practice observations are a little suspect, because I didn't notice anything  . I know he stayed until the end (even after Weekes) including the little 12 on 1 thing where they all crowd around the goal trying to get it in to end the session. How terrible if it's broken.

They were priceless. Made me wish they'd found all the rookies families in the other game debuts! I think I got a little lump in my throat in between my laughter. :D

Tell me this is just an exaggeration from the Herald-Sun:

"It was definitely the biggest thrill of my life so far," said Surma, holding a large ice pack on his right shoulder after possibly breaking his clavicle [collarbone] in the post-goal celebration. "When I got called up [from Lowell of the American Hockey League], I thought I might have been just like an extra. But after the coaching staff spent so much time with me on the system I figured I might be playing a lot."

The N&O mentions it too, but not the broken clavicle:

There would be no celebrations Tuesday other than Surma's, which was so exuberant it left him with an ice bag on his shoulder after the game.

As usual, the Herald-Sun article is worth a read:

Canes find silver lining in close loss
http://www.herald-sun.com/sports/18-332771.html

"You’ve got to have an eye open and see it go in," said Surma, who had the local media in stitches at times during his post-game interview. "It’s pretty much hard to hit a little disc out of the air."

Not much to add about the game, but I have to say that I love Vrbata, that kid absolutely loves to go to the net, something this team desperately needed earlier in the season.

And I too enjoyed seeing the excitement expressed by Surma's Mom and aunt. I could almost hear "That's my boy" through the television.

Of course now i have some concern over Surma's fragility. Boy i hope he only popped his arm or something, not another broken bone to deal with.

As for Patty D, damn, these boys need to drink some more milk, it does a body good :vamp:

I don't have much to add to what's already been said except that I am so glad I got to witness it in person. :) That's the most fun I've had since the Detroit game. Glad I taped it, too, so I can see Surma's mom's reaction. I did at least get to see Surma's reaction up close and personal. He looked ready to jump out of his skin he was so excited. And he got a standing O when they announced his name after the goal. Goosebumps I tell ya! :spin:

...now if only JD would score. ;)

ps...at least Hasenfranz didn't mess up the game. :spin:

philadelphia (terrible team)
Guyute.....would you like to do the honors of explaining all the ways in which Philly is absolutely NOT a terrible team?

no, not particularly. if play wants to think a top eastern contender is a terrible team, for whatever reason, have at it. Though I would like to hear the reason they're a terrible team.

play's defensiveness is rather suspect though... as weekes didn't play horribly, but he didn't play well. he let several shots beat him high glove side, when it was just him and a shooter. I guess if that constitutes a good game, our goaltending this year (including Archie) was MUCH better than I previously tought. Glad I've been made to see the light :)

play- I am a Huge weekes fan. I've called for him to be in net more often than not. But, I'm also not blind to the fact that the dude Will have off nights.

as for the comment directed at a few of those goals being partly Tanabe's fault, because he was the only one back on a 2 on 1... well that's just silly.
I am most definitely not a Tanabe fan, or apologist. Anyone who knows me will tell you that. But... he covered Perfectly on several odd-man rushes. The D's job in that situation is to Take away the Pass. Period. He did that, each time. He left the shot for Kevin. He didn't stop many of them.

Ottawa is a fantastic team. they have snipers. they have speed. they'll get odd-man rushes, and they will roof the puck. but still... there was a span there for a bit where just about anything they shot high-glove-side was in the net. not what I'd consider a high-note to go out on for Shady.
I hope the surgery goes well and the recovery is a full one.

Now- on to Vrbata- :D
I posted, before the board went down, that I've been watching this kid since he came up (2 years). He IS the real deal. We got a monstrous steal with that trade. Colorado truly believed they needed grit more than another sniper.... I hope it works out for them. It most definitely will for us.

Well well well, welcome back LGC.com. I have certainly missed thee. What a game last night, although we lost. We did set the record for the most players to score in their NHL debut in one season last night which is great, but we were also mathematically eliminated as well from playoff contention which is bad. Congrats to Surma for his goal as well as Vrbata for his continued stellar play. I for one have not misses BB at all since we got Vrbata and imho we got a steal from Colorado. Great job overall by hte boys after getting down two goals on 4 different occasions not to give up and to almost tie in on 3 different occasions. Bad game by KW but i am willing to chalk it up to his injured hand. If PD is hurt as well, do we call up Irbe from Lowell or do we sign Fred Brathwaite who was waived by the Blues yesterday. One last thing, some people have got to learn how to take criticism of their favorite player in stride or they will be miserable here and spend all their time defending thier "player" instead of adding valuable insight to discussions. just a thought.

That Vrbata goal was insanely good. It is fun to watch a sniper.

It's more fun to HAVE one!!!! Radim had a great game, too bad he missed that one with Lalime leaving his net open! Could have been a different game.

Bruno = tenacious D, lovin' this guy.

Crowd sounded great, sorry we weren't there.

Carolina backup G Patrick DesRochers suffered an arm injury in Tuesday's morning skate and was not available. His condition will be updated Wednesday, but the team fears he may have a broken arm.

I will just share my wisdom before i retire to bed. It seems as if, when people are nasty, innocent bystanders get hurt. i.e., PD allowed 5 goals against philadelphia (terrible team, i watched the game, they were terrible that nite!!!! there's noting anyone can say about that one), goals that were the same as weekes, many more rebounds, which drove up the sog in the third period imho, and so many say he has a great game. yeah right, this is the flyers and PD allowed five. and the support he gets?

Weekes allows 6 on the senators, the #1 team in the league, very few rebounds, he's injured and playing (because his backup is injured ??? go figure) and its a terrible horrific show. and this thread was the support he got.

It seems that PD allowing five against Philadelphia is WONDERFUL and MAGNIFICENT and Weekes allowing six against Ottawa is HORRIBLE.

Now, after people have been nasty about the whole thing, their new purported fav goalie is hurt and may not be able to play. If people were a little nicer and more fair about the whole thing, PD would probably be completely healthy. That's my spiritual outlook.

Good evening (for the last time ;) )

Let me explain, play.

Weekes made 16 saves.
DesRochers made 32.

Who cares if he gave up rebounds? He stopped them.

End of Story.

Mighty big of you, to bless us like that. *snerk*

It seems that PD allowing five against Philadelphia is WONDERFUL and MAGNIFICENT and Weekes allowing six against Ottawa is HORRIBLE.

There's flat getting beat, and then there's letting in softies. I dare you to tell me that none of the goals let in last night were soft as an Argentinian Peso. I also challenge you to show me where people have been getting nasty toward Kevin Weekes, and I further challenge you to tell me that nobody said DesRochers let in any softies against the Flyers.

Put your answer right here:___________________________________

Now, after people have been nasty about the whole thing, their new purported fav goalie is hurt and may not be able to play. If people were a little nicer and more fair about the whole thing, PD would probably be completely healthy.

What? You're telling me that it's some kind of divine smite just because people said that they liked Patrick DesRochers and that Kevin Weekes let in a couple of softies last night? You really believe that?

If so, I'd love to know who you got your wacky terbacky from so that I can go get some of my own. It must be some hella-powerful stuff!

Don't tell me--because I was "nasty" to you, I'll get hurt in a car wreck or something now. Right?

Right?

*walks away shaking her head in utter disbelief*

well, i'm a bit late to jump on the bandwagon, but i have the number 80 across the back of my jersey...and i'll agree, last night was an off game..not gonna stick up for him or make excuses..it was pretty obvious he was getting frustrated and pissed (note him slamming his stick on the ice and snapping it in half..that qualifies as frustration, right?) ...still a great game though! i was in sec 128 ..love those seats :) ...Vrbata rocks. period. My question now is...if Weekes is out for the season....and PD broke his arm...um...does that leave irbe and petruk?

Holy shiite. I like Weekes a lot, but there is no crime in recognizing that he didn't play well last night. It doesnt matter what the reason is, the result is the same. No big deal. He let in soft goals, and im sure he would tell you the same. it happens. I love hedican, but he hasnt played his best at all times this season. Hell, I love all the canes, and yet i think that their season has been abominable. I've gotta have a little perspective to go along with my rabid fanaticism!

One last thing, some people have got to learn how to take criticism of their favorite player in stride or they will be miserable here and spend all their time defending thier "player" instead of adding valuable insight to discussions. just a thought.

I think I saw the refs in some of the funniest positions at the game last night. I was seated in 125 so sometimes I had a funny angle on things. At one point though it looked like the ref was down on his knees pinned between 2 sticks, he looked like he was hanging onto the sticks trying not to be killed. The other time away from teh play the ref was skating backwards and just fell down and slid to the boards. For the most part they kept getting in the way of everything but its kinda funny to see them slip up.

I saw both things you mentioned Jedi.. the first was when a ref got between Chara and one of our players, I think it was Hill. He looked up at CHara trying to punch someone and had the fear of god written all over him LOL. I think Hill could have gotten a penalty but the ref was too scared to get enough air for that whistle ;)
I also had to giggle at the unprovoked fall down. No one was near the guy! (that I saw anyway)

ive learned to take up for weekes when noone else would. the pd wagon is full and weekesy's is empty. im the only in his wagon, all by myself, just weekesy and i....

i have learned from the tough season  not to be convinced. pd allows five against the flyers, whoopdidoo (yeah right). i new people would jump on his bandwagon. weekesy allows 6 on the senators, injured, going into surgery (noone else on the team has played through an injury besides o's eye) and its a travesty. Please. I've seen it before. I have not said that it was the best display by a goalie, I'm just saying things are different for PD's bad games than KW's.

and if you're the only weekes fan, you're either a bit full of yourself, or dillusional. (judging by your posts on this "issue" I'd say the latter)

no one else has played through injury. ROFL. this is getting rich.
ask Hill how he's been feeling since October and see what he tells you.

if you have some hockey views to add, I welcome them. if you're just going to come and preach that you're the only weekes fan, nobody loves him like you, and everyone else is out to get him... then I could care less, but will give you a http://www.tridead.net/forums/images/smilies/wave.gif

about blindly supporting weekes, ive never said that was a spectacular game, a lot of you said that pd's game was spectacular, which it was not. im only addressing the fact that pd gets kisses after the philly game and weekes gets jumped on after his. im not blindly supporting him, a lot of you are blindly supporting pd. im just calling your attention to it.

This "argument" can be summed up in a nutshell. PD stopped the shots he should ahve stopped against Philly and KW(whether injury related or not)
did not stop the shots he should have against Ottawa.

No one is jumping Weekes. We are allowed to say it was a bad game. If 2 goalies give up the same number of goals in 2 games, it does not mean that the performances are equal. I've been on this board since December (?) and I have never seen a goalie debate - no Goalie v. Goalie has gone on here. I think some of the accolades that were thrown PD's way where, in part, due to the fact that we expected much LESS from him and were very pleasantly surprised. No one here dismisses Weekes great performances this season.

Play, it would help all of us undertsand what you are refuting if you quote the post you are referring to.

Umm ... it must be tough being Weeks Only fan. I'm Jeff O'niells only fan. And you all should just back off of him OK. Jeff O' Rocks is no O'niell fan. Just me. :)

Look we won't have to watch either Weeks or Derousher for long. What 8 games left. Both are hurt. Have fun watching Petruk. I think I'm also the only Petruk fan. I don't know, I could be wrong.

play, I wasn't making jabs at you.... I'm honestly concerned for your well being. the 'one and only biggest fan syndrome' is a serious issue. I'd like to help you before it's too late.

for the record- weekes did not get jumped on. hockey fans will call them as they see them. how did most hockey fans see the weekes' performance last night? shakey. he made a few good stops, and let in a few goals where he had a clear line of sight, and nothing between him and the shooter. an NHL goalie, especially one of weekes' calibur, needs to stop more than 30% of the one on one shots. period.

as to DesRochers getting more accolades for his game in philly (still interested in hearing why they're a terrible team, btw- should you want to get into a hockey discussion) .... take a step back. the guy just came up from the minors, and played a very solid game against one of the eastern powers. Perhaps because of your love for Weekes, you can't give props to a youngster who stepped up and played a few games at the quality that the NHL demands.
When you're already an NHL goalie, and have been for several years (ie- weekes), a little bit more is expected of you. you should know that.

This "argument" can be summed up in a nutshell. PD stopped the shots he should ahve stopped against Philly and KW(whether injury related or not)
did not stop the shots he should have against Ottawa.

OMG, Jillsdad... I agree with you! :D

ive learned to take up for weekes when noone else would. the pd wagon is full and weekesy's is empty. im the only in his wagon, all by myself, just weekesy and i....

um..yea..just you and weekes..i suppose the "80" across the back of my jersey means i must BE weekes then..if you're the only fan..right?

and i'd even wager that if you ask weekes about his performance last night, he'd tell you he had a bad game (note him getting mad and breaking his stick in half..im guessing he KNEW he should have stopped that shot.)

Play, I am not attacking you, but at some point I start to wonder if you are a canes fan or a kevin only fan. Mikus posts on here as a Irbe only fan, and knowing that, its easier to take his posts with a grain of salt. As for only KW and O playing through injury, that is insane. Off the top of my ehad, i can think of Francis, Kapanen, Brindy, Cole, Hedican, Hill all playing through varying degrees of injury earlier in the season. i think you just like to stir things up. There are other forums more conducive to that than this one.

I know play means well. Whenever you do have a fav player, ie. batesb13fan, Kevynfan14, Jeff O Rocks, jarofan, brindy17 and myself, it is very hard to watch him have a bad game for whatever reason.
I'm not jumping on anyone, you all have good points. I just think I understand the frustration of seeing your favorite guy slip. :)

I can fully appreciate being frustrated when you're favorite guy slips. It's the denial i don't like.

I know i ticked off quite a few Irbe fans earlier this year when i called every bluff that claimed he was playing better than Weekes. None of that was caused by any dislike i had for Irbe, because i had no dislike for Irbe (aside from the whole 'play me or trade me' thing, but that's for another thread). It was caused by my calling things as i saw them.

And in this case, my comments have nothing to do with any dislike for Weekes, who indeed has been my favorite Cane this year. But as i see it, Weekes had a bad game last night. Fine, jolly, wonderful. Yes, it is frustrating to me, but dudeman has accomplished so much this season and i'm downright giddy about the prospects of him in net next year.

I can deal with a bad game now and then. I just don't go with the blind devotion and the comments that any player can do no wrong, because they're all human, and they all have good days and bad days. Weekes is freaking awesome, but he had a bad game. IMO. End of story.

Was she interviewed or did they show the game clip? What a great moment for them.

Between the new guys arriving at camp with a taste of the NHL (and NHL goals) and the long list of injured, those guys will ALL be chomping at the bit to get back to the ice this summer. :spin:

From the Dunn Daily Record:

Focusing On More Than The Moment

By NEIL FULLER Associate Sports Editor

RALEIGH — The thrill of scoring a goal in his first NHL game wasn’t lost on Hurricanes forward Damian Surma. But this 22-year-old rookie understands that he still has much work to do in order to establish himself in hockey’s premiere showcase.

He’s thinking long-term.

“It takes a lot more than that first goal,” said Surma, who scored at 2:50 in the third period of Tuesday’s 6-5 loss to Ottawa — delivering Carolina a new league record by becoming the fifth Cane this season to produce a goal in his debut. “You have to show up night in and night out. It definitely takes a lot of grit and a lot of determination to play here. Hopefully, I can do it.”

His minor-league numbers suggest he can. Surma, Carolina’s fifth-round draft pick in 1999, collected 225 points (105 goals, 120 assists) in 241 games with Plymouth of the OHL and skated in 61 games for AHL affiliate Lowell before being called up last Monday.

That left Canes coach Paul Maurice with enough confidence to allow Surma to skate on the same line as Ron Francis and Jeff O’Neill — translating into 7:15 of ice time over 11 shifts.

Big Help From Big ‘O’

O’Neill assisted on Surma’s shining moment by leaving a rebound off Senators goalie Patrick Lalime that the Lincoln Park, MI, native easily cleaned up.

“You’ve got to leave your eyes open. You’ve got to see it go in,” Surma said. “(The chance) was solid. You hit a little disc out of the air. I just got lucky. “O’Neill just chipped it by the defense, and I stayed with it. Lucky I did.”

His teammates couldn’t have been happier for him. O’Neill openly chanted the rookie’s name after the goal as the RBC Center Jumbotron displayed shots of Surma’s moved-to-tears mother, Vivian.

Surma’s father, Mark, couldn’t make the trip for his son’s first game as a Cane due to an ongoing battle with cancer. Undoubtedly, seeing his son score an NHL goal was the best medicine the family could’ve hoped for.

There is, however, one thing Surma may need to work on if his stay in the Triangle is to become permanent: ACC basketball diplomacy. As Surma talked with reporters following the game, he wore a University of North Carolina baseball cap.

“I just like the colors,” he explained. “No, I liked the basketball teams there when they had Vince Carter and Antwan Jamison. I haven’t watched much basketball lately, but I’m sure they’re a pretty good team still.” Just don’t say that to the local Blue Devil and Wolfpack fans. Focusing On More Than The Moment

No problem, Igf. You speak your mind, i speak mine. That's what this board is here for!

Yeah, it's been a dismal season in the standings... but i'm extremely optimistic when i look at Bayda, Heerema, Malec, DeFauw, St. Jacques, Surma, Kurka, Zigomanis. Next year's gonna be extremely interesting!

The Dunn Daily Record, now there's a paper you don't see quoted on a hockey board every day ;)

I thought I was the only one who read that paper. I work in Harnett County so I read it to keep track.
