Oh dear heavens, Ottawa is coming to town.

Might as well start with the bad news. The Sens are playing to keep the top spot in league. They also seem to have the Canes' number. Big time. When they win, it's usually a beating. Most recently they won 5-2 in Ottawa. That's not enough bad news? How about this, they are the only team in the league to have five 20-goal scorers. Marian Hossa anyone? It gets better, Patrick Lalime has a 2.16 GAA and 34 wins. But no fear, they'll probably give him a rest tonight. More bad news...as most of you know, this will likely be Kevin Weekes' last start this year, he will be added to the growing IR list when he undergoes surgery on his hand tomorrow.

The good news: The (baby) Canes have nothing to lose. They are playing for roster spots on next season's team and are putting in every effort to get that chance. Another prospect was called up from Lowell yesterday after Brad Defauw suffered a lacerated elbow. He'll get his chance to be the 5th player this season to score in his first NHL game. Go Surma! Kevin Weekes has 3 shutouts in March and his save % stands at .922. Hopefully his last game this season will be more of the same. :) In other good news, Ottawa has lost their las two games. The most recent loss coming at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings, who are also vying for the top spot in the league.

Ottawa injuries: Martin Prusek (concussion), Curtis Leschyshyn (ankle)

Here's the pre-game skate (http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/news/news.asp?articleid=1034) from ch.com. Discuss. :)

Well, the 5-2 and 4-1 losses have been bad but didn't we tie them 4-4 once this season? I seem to remember a really wild 3rd period where the Canes traded goals with them several times. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As you say though, the Canes have nothing to lose so I'm looking to hopefully see an exciting and close game.

Indeed they did. The good is that they did manage to tie the Sens, the bad is that they had to score 4 goals to do it. I really want to see them beat the Sens but it's very hard to defend against them because they are so unbelievably talented. And they have Chara who is just a big rock on defense. How are you supposed to get past this guy? :eek2:

Hopefully the luck of the Irish will carry over. I get to go to the game thanks to a very magnanimous friend. If they play smart and have a little of that luck behind them... it may happen. We beat Detroit and the Stars right. The Baby Canes have nothing to lose and have been stepping up pretty regularly. Our style of play has been very different with less shooting from the blue line (boo) , more shots on goal that are quality, deep shots rather than just shots on goalie and the young guys have seem to but a little more energy in the older guys. Almost a whole different team... hope the hungers there. ... Our hitting has been a little heavier and Mo had better dress Malec as defense. Need more of that pinching defense rather than that skating backwards stuff. Crossing my fingers and toes and hoping for the best. http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/hyper.gif

This is gonna be either very good for the canes or very bad. The Sens are one of the NHL elite and although guaranteed a playoff spot, dont expect them to take it easy on us. I d love to see Weekesy get another shutout thatd be awesome. Cant wait!

As good as we've played recently, it's hard to get excited about this game. Ottawa will have 100 points if they win, correct?

Oh crap. Looks like I got a little ref hunting to do before tonight's game...apparently, the "lecture" I gave Hasenfratz after the Colorado game was not enough. YOOOOOUUUUU!

As for Tommy having a ref hex...if he doesn't have one, I possibly can cook one up. Especially if I have to do the goalie hex again...

The most recent loss coming at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings, who are also vying for the top spot in the league.

And what a beating it was. A Hull hat trick drove the nails into the coffin. I have to admit that I was really surprised. I have a lot of confidence in Lalime as a goaltender, but I could see why Ottawa pulled him in favor of Emery. I mean, the second period saw three of four shots taken hitting net. 6-2 is a bad loss for a top-ranked team like Ottawa and they should be suitably offended and irritated enough to not to wanna lose to the likes of us.

As I see it, the good news about playing the Senators is that our team typically plays better against higher ranked teams. We tend to play down to the level of our competition. In the presence of a really good system, the Hurricanes should either take total control or get trounced. One or the other.

I'll chime in with my own little BLAH concerning Hasenfratz as a ref.....damn.

I heard rumblings a month or so back though that the franchise was looking into requesting that because of his calls in the past, that others referees be sent first before him next season when there are Canes home games. Apparently they are allowed to submit some sort of formal complaint.... Anyone else heard this? I think this was brought up shortly after the Dallas game.....

I know we'd breathe a bit easier with his appearances reffing a game the Canes play in down to a minimum.

yes, teams can file complaints against ref's. once several are made of the same ref, the league "does their best" to not assign those refs to your games anymore. there is, however, no guarantee that you will not get them... it's just something they try to do.

I imagine when nobody likes certain ref's... Somebody has to get them...

actually IIRC, JR said that was for which officials you get in the playoffs I think.. non issue for us. He said he does submit those though, surely we cannot be the only team hurting because of his bad judgement.

Hopefully the NHL will clean house as the NFL did (they fired 8)

my, my!!!

the senators are quite the team. they are very fast, and extremely accurate. they practically ran us on the power play. although knowing they went bankrupt, it makes you think, i can build a team like that if it means going over budget.

Anyway 2-0, and an impending powerplay. I think our team does better at even strength than on the powerplay. Getting knocked around, and enjoying every second of it.

No kidding!! Guy and I watched it several times. Couldn't figure it out because it was one of the cleanest faceoffs you see. Puck never hit the ice ppfffftttt. As Ronnie said, they cheated, we still won it clean, you have to waive that off!

WOW!!! What an exciting game this far! The score's currently 5-4 Ottawa but this is bringing back memories of that early season 4-4 tie game. Back and forth, back and forth. Very exciting.

HOW does Vrbata have 22 minutes of ice time so far?! That is more than anyone else! Someone on CH.com says he is playing on the Vasicek line AND is playing defense with Hill. What is up?

I absolutely cannot complain at all about that game. It was awesome to watch and people....we just gave the #1 team in the league a run for their money! Way to go guys! Great job!

And again....how did Vrbata end up with the highest ice time tonight?

wow, what a game!!!! Exciting till the end for sure!! Personally, I do think DesRochers should have started the 3rd, but what do I know? I was hoping Weeksey was going to have a great last game of the season, but alas he did not.

Way to go Surma! Quite a tradition we have going here! Not only do I think the Canes are going to be good next year, I think Lowell will be much better too.

Vrbata remained fun to watch.

We were very disciplined tonight for sure.. Only 2 penalties and just one of them was deserved (and pretty dumb unfortunately).

Way to go guys! They definitely deserved the W tonight!

wow. what a great game. :D

the first 2 periods I thought they were just trying to keep it close. the 3rd period was the best period of hockey we've gotten from this team in a long time. well, aside from quite a few blown clears, weak passing in our own zone, and Weekes forgetting what he had been playing like recently...

our forwards grinded their arses off, and a lot of times plain old outworked the Sens.

yet another historic night for one of our youngsters!!

and vrbata... dude should've had 4 tonight. unbelievable. talk about being "ON". http://www.tridead.net/forums/images/smilies/multi.gif

Incredible game. Too bad that last shot by O didn't go in. What a game by the whole team. They could've just collapsed after being down 2-0 after one period but they came back in a big way. Vrbata's got skills. 'Nuff said. Missed an empty net but more than made up for it with two big goals. Lalime had to be stellar on several shots tonight and got a few lucky breaks as well (shot beats him and hits the post....argh!) As SHC said, the Canes gave the number one team in the league a run for their money. The Senators are an unbelievable team and the Canes definitely showed up to play tonight.

Despite the loss, it really sounded like the crowd at the RBC Center was having a ton of fun.

But Vrbata.....having this much skill this early in his career? Just think of how good he can end up being with a little maturing and teaching from Francis and the rest of the guys?

Once again the Adams line (3rd line tonight) just rocked with energy and kept that game alive with their spark.

Crowd was rocking for sure, way to go guys!

Personally, I do think DesRochers should have started the 3rd, but what do I know? I was hoping Weeksey was going to have a great last game of the season, but alas he did not.

I agree. The most unfortunate part is that the shots that went in weren't even stick side. Just not a great night on his part. But there have been plenty of nights when other parts of the team were not exactly great so I guess you gotta expect it to happen.

I taped the game so I'll have to go back and watch and see if Vrbata was playing D with Hill at some point.

Surma's mom almost made me cry when he scored!!!

Whata bang, bang 3rd period, huh?

No embarrasment there, folks. If Ottawa thought we might play dead, they were sadly mistaken.

And for those of you at the game, you would have loved it when Surma scored-- big, big reaction shots of his mother and aunt (sister?). Mom even had her disposable camera at the ready!! :D Forslund mentioned the 'Canes organization flies in family for the rookie's first game.

What is it now, 8 rookies have scored their first goals -- 5 of them in their first game?

So, we lost. . . . pretty thin chance of making the 8th spot, anyway. You just have to be proud of the effort-- and Vrbata. . . . did we get the sweet end of that deal or what. . . . can't wait for next year!!!

Time for the Good, Bad, and Ugly...

The Good:
Surma's 1st goal! How about Vrbata?! What a steal he was...I can't believe the Avs let him go! If only he could have gotten that open net goal...geez. Great effort by all of our guys tonight, and way to light up Patrick Lalime!

The Bad:
We lost. We could have done better on the power play. We gave up way too many odd-man rushes, had bad turnovers, and Weekes was just TERRIBLE tonight...gave up too many softies.

The Ugly:
I think we outshot Ottawa, and what about all those chances we had to tie it?! Vrbata's open net, Kurka's bid went off the post, and Jeff O couldn't quite get the rebound. We deserved this one, but it's just the kind of season we've been having.

i must defend weekes. i know some people will never like him and are just waiting to say something about him, but the guy is out there injured and asked to stop shots where the defender, #1 team in the league, is wide open and a couple of shots where the only defender was Tanabe. Not softies by a long shot. Say what you like, that was a great game for the guy to end his season on, there is no convicing me otherwise.

Its interesting how some have no problem jumping on their own goalie, but say nothing about the fact that lalime was AWFUL!!!!! He got beat by the AHL cellar dwellers tonite.

Enjoy the evening. Go CANES, and Kevin Weeeeeeks!!!

wow, what a wild game that was! vrbata is scary. are the avs that good that they could let a guy like him go? he's only twenty-freaking-one!

what we lacked in defense we made up for in resiliency and heart. we pulled within a goal every time they took a two-goal lead. this would have never happened a month ago. :spin:

congrats to surma for making it FIVE rookies now scoring in their debut. i only wish we would have won, but playing such a great team, i think we did pretty well.

Hey, don't get me wrong, play. I am a HUGE Kevin Weekes fan. You have to admit though, giving up six goals is nothing to brag about...yes, I am aware his hand is injured. I am simply stating that he had a bad game. I realize how hard it is to play with a badly injured hand like that, but I simply feel we would have won the game with better goaltending. I would have started DesRochers tonight to prevent Weekes from injuring the hand more, as we'll need him to start next season.

I did not mean to slam Weekes in any way at all...I love him just as much as any other Caniac would. He's had far more good performances than bad ones this season, and is one of our team's most valuable assets. I also believe I DID mention how we lit up Lalime...you might want to read my previous post a bit more carefully.

Thanks for listening. :spin:

Play - if you're referring to my post, let me first off say I love Kevin Weekes. Support him completely, want the best for him. That does not make him always without fault in my eyes though. In my opinion he played a bad game tonight. I know he was playing injured, but there is no reason to aggravate the hand if it is bothering him. Not trying to change your mind by any means, I just don't want you to think "I will never like him" because I criticized him. I like him very much.

Ok, tonight's result may have been a loss, as expected...but a vast majority of the Canes showed up to play. And thus, the result was a very close, overall tightly played game that was good, bad, and ugly...

The Good:

Rally in Raleigh - I love a good rally...and the Canes definitely played mailman on that front tonight, despite the loss.

From the Czech Republic With Love - Two goals for Vrbata, a goal and assist for Kurka, and an assist for Vasicek. Lovely, just lovely boys.

Fountain of Youth - And Surma gets his first NHL goal! What else is there to say other than, as Cher would utter, the beat goes on for the baby Canes!

BONF On! - Speaking of the baby Canes, nice assist for Bayda on a goal by O. If I didn't know better, I think we're looking at the next Ron Francis in Bayda here. And with that said, Ronnie didn't do too shabby a job himself in getting two splendid assists.

The Cleanliness and Godliness Skiffle Band - What is this? Only two penalties for ze Canes tonight? Very good, considering the tons of penalties the supposedly better team committed, AND that Hasenfratz was doing the refereeing chores tonight. Give yourselves a pat on the back boys for staying out of the Sin Bin the most.

And the Crowd Goes Wild - Another good crowd tonight, at least based on what I heard on the tele. Especially liked seeing that crowd applauding the Canes' overall great performance.

Chalk It Up To Tripp - Speaking of applauding, I cannot help but do that for Senior Tracy tonight...he actually behaved and was a good color commentator for once! Not to mention how he actually handled himself well in the interview with Ronnie...IE not asking silly questions. (insert thumbs up emoticon here)

The Bad:

Holy Parliament, Catman! - Very much nuff said here...other than I'm honestly not surprised at how Weekes did tonight with his hand and not practicing much. Time to take a little catnap, dude.

The Ugly:

So close...yet so far. - I know I wasn't the only one who about had a heart attack at that goal Ronnie should have had, had it not been for the puck somehow being magnetically attracted to the goal post. I feel for thee, his kind, and my kind...oh, what could have been.

Overall, a very good game had by you, Canes. Keep that up, and the end being a win or a loss totally won't matter.

Oh yes, and my four stars for tonight are...

Vrbata
Surma
Kurka

No complaints here either. The game was an "on the edge of your seat, biting your nails" game until the very end. The crowd sounded really into the game too, wish I could've been there..*grumble* Darn soccer practice. *grumble*

I'm very happy Surma scored his first NHL goal, and was glad his mother was able to see it. She certainly was happy, eh? ;) Vrbata is awesome, and I can't wait to see what he will be like in the next season or two. Wow. The team played with a lot of heart and energy out there on the ice tonight.

I am VERY proud of our Radim Vrbata. :D He did a great job out there tonight. We didn't win, but we gave the best in the east a real workout!

After watching this kid play the last couple of games, the word "Battaglia" is slowing disappearing from my vocabulary! :D

Don't worry guys....play is probably referring to me as the one who "will never like Weekes" which isn't true but there is no point getting into that. I look at it objectively....not looking blindly at my favorite player with Weekes so I can see that he did not have a great game. But that is all I will say because I've defended my opinion on this a million times at CH.com and I am not doing it here. :spin:

Oh....and I don't mention Lalime because this is a Canes board and I could give a rip about the Sens. And I will not take away from my team's awesome performance by saying that their goalie sucked. Those Lowell cellar dwellers are pretty damn good if you ask me.

Dude... what a game... I NEED a Vrbata jersey. Now.

On the Weekes issue... considering Ottawa only had about 26 shots on goal, letting in 6 isn't exactly stellar. I would say he had a bad game.

And we've gotta be pretty damn close to settinga record for NHL debut scoring for one season.

even though we now can't make the playoffs, I think that we have plenty to look forward to.

imagine next year... we'll have Cole. Brind'Amour, Francis, Vrbata, Svoboda, Vasicek, Adams and Adams, DeFauw, Hereema, Kurka, Zigomanis, Surma, Bayda, O'neill, Hlavac, etc.... all to choose from on offense.

I certainly like the Offense-oriented Canes!

HOW does Vrbata have 22 minutes of ice time so far?! That is more than anyone else! Someone on CH.com says he is playing on the Vasicek line AND is playing defense with Hill. What is up?

I never saw Vrbata playing defense with Hill. I did see him on the power play, playing the opposite point from Hill (in other words, Sami's old spot). Either the ch.com poster didn't know what he was talking about, or i missed something out there myself.

Speaking of Vrbata, tonight was the first game i've seen of him in a Canes sweater. It would be a major understatement to say i was pleased. Dudeman is good. And i'm sure none of you ever would have figured that out had i not said it.

Carolina backup G Patrick DesRochers suffered an arm injury in Tuesday's morning skate and was not available. His condition will be updated Wednesday, but the team fears he may have a broken arm.

I will just share my wisdom before i retire to bed. It seems as if, when people are nasty, innocent bystanders get hurt. i.e., PD allowed 5 goals against philadelphia (terrible team, i watched the game, they were terrible that nite!!!! there's noting anyone can say about that one), goals that were the same as weekes, many more rebounds, which drove up the sog in the third period imho, and so many say he has a great game. yeah right, this is the flyers and PD allowed five. and the support he gets?

Weekes allows 6 on the senators, the #1 team in the league, very few rebounds, he's injured and playing (because his backup is injured ??? go figure) and its a terrible horrific show. and this thread was the support he got.

It seems that PD allowing five against Philadelphia is WONDERFUL and MAGNIFICENT and Weekes allowing six against Ottawa is HORRIBLE.

Now, after people have been nasty about the whole thing, their new purported fav goalie is hurt and may not be able to play. If people were a little nicer and more fair about the whole thing, PD would probably be completely healthy. That's my spiritual outlook.

Good evening (for the last time ;) )

Holy Toledo! Did anyone get the license number of that truck?

I can't speak for PD's showing against Philly, because i wasn't able to watch that game. As for Weekes tonight, well, he seemed a little off-kilter... but i'm totally cool with it. 3 shutouts in the past 5 games... heck yeah, i'll take the occasional 6-netter!

The fact of the matter is that while Weekes has certainly become one of the league's best this season, he had an off-night. No sweat. It was one of the most fun games i've seen all year.

To have the franchise healthy again... get all those guys of injured reserve, let the playing-wounded heal, let Weekes get that hand taken care of... i think we're going to be in for one hell of a season next year!

Flyers....#4 in Eastern Conference, #6 in NHL with 91 points (38-19-11-3) having already clinched a play-off spot. If they are horrible we don't even rate.

Guyute.....would you like to do the honors of explaining all the ways in which Philly is absolutely NOT a terrible team?

OK, sorry, I didn't know the rules. Weekes had a great night because it is only compared to a rookie's game against a hard team the other night, gotcha. This is like my friend who always argues Bush is great because Clinton sucked, where I think they are mutually exclusive and based on their own merit and experience (or lack thereof as appropo)

Don't get me wrong, I am thrilled with the effort tonight, but that could have been a win against one of the absolute elite in the league with good goaltending (I don't care who from so long as it's good).

Again, just my take on things.. http://wemissjerry.org/smiles/shrug.gif

OK, sorry, I didn't know the rules. Weekes had a great night because it is only compared to a rookie's game against a hard team the other night, gotcha. Yeah, like I said before, Chara would be good in goal just because of his size. He looks like Frankenstein out there! Geez...it's like watching Yao Ming on skates...

LOL!! My sister was shouting "Hey Yao Ming!" at him tonight. She also called him Manute Bol. :D
