stupid fans throw junk on the ice. I don't care how mad you are, keep your empty water bottles and beer cups to yourself. idiots
That should go for dead octopuses as well, IMO :D At least we won't have to see any more smelly sea creatures on the ice this year!
The Bolts played a great game last night, although admittedly I missed most of the good parts because of near constant channel surfing. The only bad thing about center ice is that I can never decide what game I want to watch!
I'm still sticking with the Caps in 7. :smoke:

This has turned into a real competitive series! :smoke: I like not knowing what to expect. I thought Olie was more puck-proof than he has been so far, but it's hard to keep down a sniper like St. Louis.

But the Southeast Division champions regrouped to win Games 3 and 4 in Washington, and played so well on the road trip that coach John Tortorella tried to maintain the momentum by keeping the night-before-game road routine.
So, the Lightning stayed at a hotel Thursday night instead of sleeping in their own beds. What effect that had is open to debate; however Tortorella is not one to tinker when things are going well.

Tampa's big line has great chemistry
TSN.ca Staff
4/18/2003
Kudos to Tampa head coach John Tortorella, who decided to throw together Martin St. Louis, Vinny Prospal and Vincent Lecavalier, three players who enjoyed breakthrough seasons, with the Lightning down 2-0 in the series.
The chemistry on this line in the last three games has been terrific. Remember, Prospal once got himself in trouble by making a derogatory comment about a French Canadian player, but he has had tremendous chemistry, both on and off the ice with Lecavalier and St. Louis.
This line is responsible for scoring the last nine goals for the Lightning in the series. Obviously, they had nothing to lose in forming this line and now they have everything to gain.
This line has taken a Lightning team that was down and out and given them a reason to believe. Tampa Bay has tremendous momentum heading back to Washington for Game 6, including a lot of confidence from their last visit to D.C when they won both games.
..
Instead of talking about the big-money forwards, let's talk about some defencemen. Throughout the playoffs, we have talked about defencemen jumping up into the play and scoring goals. How about defencemen jumping up and getting some assists. Stan Neckar made a nice play to set up Martin St. Louis on Tampa's winning goal and Marek Malik made an identical play to set up Vancouver's Brendan Morrison.
They're not the most heralded guys but these two Czech defencemen jumped up at opportune times in key games and made terrific plays.
Speaking of defencemen, here's an interesting stat. The St. Louis Blues defence was obviously shorthanded with Khavanov going down with the flu just one shift and 29 seconds into the game.
Who do you think had the least amount of ice-time in the game on the depleted St. Louis blueline? If you guessed Chris Pronger, you'd be right. Pronger saw the ice for only 17:26 and that was #5 on a list of five. That's highly unusual and I wonder if there is something bothering him because of injury or illness.

Any other game and that St Louis pull down would be a penalty...guess OT in the playoffs is different. I think the Caps would be a bit perturbed if they lost two games in a series on a 5 on 3 goal by the opposition.
Go get 'em, Bolts.

That would be ex-Rangers GM Neil Smith. He and Jack Edwards are freakin' morons.
But 10 more minutes and I switch over to watch Johnny Sideburns call the Canucks-Blues game.

Wow, an excellent game ended by an excellent goal by St. Louis!
I was hoping Tampa would win this series, the ending just feels a bit anticlimatic when the winning goal is scored after a too many men on the ice penalty though....... Ugh, what a terrible mental error for the Caps.
Awesome job by the Bolts and St. Louis though to recover from their two game deficit and win the next four.
Their matchup with the Devils should be exciting. Let's go Bolts!

I was really surprised to see the box-scores and attendance for Games 3 and 4 for the Caps - especially since they arrived home with a 2-0 lead in games.
Anyway, their attendance sucked for all 3 games. From the AP article about today's game:
It also hurt that the money-losing Capitals failed to sell out any of their three home games in the series. Sunday's Easter attendance was 15,269 -- and that appeared very generous.
``I have to really reconsider the kind of commitment and investment I'm making with this team,'' Leonsis said. ``I'm not a quitter. ... It was hard to see 14,000 fans. I don't like the treatment that we're getting from the building. The party's over. To play back-to-back games on Passover and Easter Sunday does not help.''

We got to my dad's to pack up and leave for home about 5 minutes before the end of regulation. So we decided to stay until the game was over. So we didn't leave my dad's until 7:30. Wonder what type of payroll the Caps will have next year?
Leonsis upset by turnout
By Dave Fay and David Elfin
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Washington Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis last night expressed strong displeasure with fan turnout for the third and final playoff game at MCI Center this season and said he would be reconsidering his financial commitment to the team.
"I'm just surprised that we have this kind of important game on a weekend and we have 14,000 people attending," Leonsis said after the Caps were eliminated by Tampa Bay 2-1 in triple overtime. The Lightning won the Eastern Conference quarterfinal 4-2.
The attendance was announced as 15,269, a figure that appeared to be high by at least 2,500. While the crowd was the smallest for any of Washington's three home games, it was loud and supportive.
"They saw a helluva game," Leonsis said of the fans that showed up. "It's incredibly disappointing to have 14,000 people in the building for the final playoff game. So I think the market has spoken and I have some real re-evaluating to do on the kind of investments we're going to make in the team because the city didn't respond. You cannot have a playoff game with 14,000 people with the kind of marketing and consumer focus that we've had."
The announced attendance for the first home game on April 15 was 17,279, but that was appeared to be inflated by about 2,500. A crowd of 15,576 was announced for Game 4 the next night, a figure that looked to be inflated by about 1,500.
Leonsis also said he was unhappy with the treatment his team has received from Washington Sports & Entertainment, Abe Pollin's umbrella firm that schedules events at MCI Center. Leonsis and Lincoln Holdings own 44 percent of the building.
"It was heartbreaking to see 14,000 people in the building," Leonsis said. "I'm not very happy with the treatment we've gotten from the building; I don't like playing back-to-back games on Passover or an afternoon game on Easter. I'll make sure that doesn't happen again. The party's kind of over [with WS&E], I'm just turning the other cheek. We need to be treated with respect. Even if we had won our division and had home-ice advantage, [we still] would have been playing back-to-back and that's unacceptable."
Leonsis gave a vote of confidence to rookie coach Bruce Cassidy and general manager George McPhee.

I do think the Caps/Bolts got a bad schedule with the ONLY weekend game on Easter Sunday at 3:00. That would be a tough time if Easter/Passover traditions are a part of your family. Particularly if your family is out of town. I feel bad for both teams and the fans that it had to be scheduled that way. 7:00 give you more time to get back from your travels or to complete family plans even in town.

Actually, the Caps are the ones that got screwed as far as home ice. The Lightning had Game 1 on a Thurs , Game 2 on a Saturday, and Game 5 on a Friday. The Caps got a back to back on a Tuesday and Wednesday (Passover) for games 3 and 4 and the 3pm Easter game for game 6.

It'll be interesting to see the schedule for the Devils/Lightning series. Games 1 (Thurs) and 2 (Sat) have been scheduled in NJ, but games 3 and 4 will be scheduled today. Apparently the Tampa arena is booked from 4/30-5/4 for Disney on Ice and the Dixie Chicks.

They will probably cancel one of the Disney on Ice shows. Last year there was a Sesame Street Show during the playoffs and after the NHL announced their schedule, RBC cancelled Sesame Street and gave people their money back.

Didn't know that Turdy St. Louis ( ;) ) wasn't even drafted....
From TSN.ca (typo in headline is theirs)
St. Louis proving there is a place small players
The Canadian Press
4/22/2003
(CP) - Martin St. Louis hopes he is proving there is a place in the NHL for smaller players.
St. Louis played a huge role in upstart Tampa Bay dispatching the Washington Capitals in six games to advance to the second round of the NHL playoffs. Not only was St. Louis the Lightning's leading scorer in the series with nine points (five goals, four assists), he scored the winning goal in the last three games, including the one in triple overtime that gave the Lightning a 2-1 Game 6 victory and their first playoff series win in franchise history.
St. Louis became just the fourth player in NHL history to score three straight winning goals in one playoff series. The others were Roy Conacher (Boston, 1939), Clark Gillies (New York Islanders, 1977) and Kevin Stevens (Pittsburgh, 1991). Even more impressive is that Tampa Bay dropped the opening two games of the series with Washington before winning the final four contests.
Heady stuff, indeed, considering St. Louis, a 27-year-old from Laval, Que., is only five foot nine and 185 pounds and wasn't drafted following a productive U.S. college career.
"I hope I can help that," St. Louis said during a conference call Tuesday when asked if his play will convince NHL general managers to consider drafting smaller players. "I would like to help out and open some eyes that smaller players can still compete and play hard in this league and have success."
Tampa Bay has a tough road to hoe in the second round, facing the veteran-laden New Jersey Devils who are backstopped by veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur.
"That's a team that has a lot of experience and leadership," St. Louis said of the Devils.
St. Louis hasn't been in the media spotlight just for his scoring exploits alone. Don Cherry has featured the Lightning right-winger on his Coach's Corner segment to demonstrate how a small player can have an advantage by using a long stick. Cherry encouraged parents to start their youngsters out with longer sticks.
This season has been a banner one for St. Louis, who established career highs in goals (33), assists (37) and points (70). He also represented the Eastern Conference at the NHL all-star game.
St. Louis has certainly taken the long road to NHL stardom.
He joined the Calgary Flames as a free agent in 1998 after accumulating 267 points (91 goals, 176 assists) in 138 career games at the University of Vermont. St. Louis was a finalist for the Hobey Baker award as the top U.S. college hockey player three times.
But the Flames released St. Louis following the 1999-2000 season after he registered four goals and 16 assists in 69 games, in which he was used predominantly in a defensive role. He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent the following season and registered 18 goals and 22 assists in 78 games.
St. Louis was limited to 53 games last year after suffering a broken leg, but still managed 16 goals and 19 assists before his breakout 2002-2003 campaign.
"I can't say many bad things about the Flames because they gave me an opportunity to play in the NHL," said St. Louis. "At the time my role was more defensive but I was happy to have that role and I knew eventually I might get more chances offensively to fill an even bigger role.
"But I never got that chance to do it with Calgary."
St. Louis isn't the only notable former Flames player still in the NHL playoffs.
Goaltender J.S. Giguere, who was dealt by Calgary to Anaheim, led the Mighty Ducks to a stunning first-round sweep of the Stanley Cup-champion Detroit Red Wings. The 25-year-old Montreal native, who stopped 63 shots in a 2-1 triple-overtime opening-series win, posted a sparkling 1.24 goals-against average and .965 save percentage in leading the Ducks to the second round.
St. Louis, for one, wasn't surprised to see Giguere play so well.
"I play with J.S. in the minors a lot and you could tell he had a lot of talent," St. Louis said. "He plays the butterfly style, he's a big guy, he's a competitor, he has everything."

St. Louis was a finalist for the Hobey Baker award as the top U.S. college hockey player three times.

if philly doesn't make it tonight (reverse psychology, talk about it freely, no jinx here, lol), i'm pulling for the Bolts to come out of the East.
See, I'd like to do that but I just can't. WE should win the Cup first out of this division.
hey now, i never said i'd like the bolts to win the Cup. ;) we *will* be the first out of the division -- i still believe it. :spin:
thanks for the article, nccanes. "TLT" has a nice ring to it. :D

Just bringing up a little something I was thinking about today. I believe this series turned during the third period of game two when Washington just began to toy with Tampa. They didn't seem to give a damn about playing and were severely underestimating the Bolts by trying all sorts of little cute maneuvers when they knew they had the game won.
They went on to lose four straight. The commentators definitely noticed Washington doing this and I'm sure it made the Tampa players made as well to see that they were not being taken seriously. On paper, the clear difference between the end of game 2 and the rest of the serious was the line switching done by Tortorella. But the Caps little maneuvers at the end of game 2 may have been a wake up call to the Bolts players who now realized that they had something to prove....
Just my thoughts.
