Tampa is on fire, they are for real.

It's unfortunate, though, that this matchup guarantees a SE team knocked out in the first round. Oh well.

With the divisional race this year, and now this playoff matchup, maybe this could turn into a real rivalry.

I think Tampa will win in 6 or 7.

from Marrapese-Burrell's Eastern Conference notes:

Speaking of Tampa, as terrific a year as the franchise has had, so far it hasn't translated to postseason ticket sales. Through 8 p.m. on Wednesday, only 12,600 tickets had been sold for Game 1 and 11,900 for Game 2 -- although they did sell roughly 2,000 more tickets after clinching the Southeast Division title Thursday night. Arena capacity is 19,758. Interestingly, though, the club's attendance in the regular season is up by quite a bit -- from 644,610 to 658,801 with one home game left -- but the slow playoff sales are troubling. "That's the thing that scares the living daylights out of me," said general manager Jay Feaster, who deserves executive of the year honors. "I don't know how to go to [owner] Bill Davidson if it doesn't [sell out] and explain why."

I say Tampa in 5, though Tampa in 6 if Kolzig plays off his head. The Tampa roster has talent from top to bottom, young to old, while Washington's got.....well, Kolzig and Jagr. I'm looking for Tampa to win this one way or another. It'll be disappointing to Washington fans though to see another first round loss of their team.... Just two years ago they had enermously high hopes after Washington's outstanding season but they then were defeated in the first round by the Pens...

No, Martin's here at my house, remember, Chickie? :D *GAAAAK*!!! ....ugh, that joke almost caused me spewage.....

Anyhoo!!! The Capitals versus the Lightning!! This'll be a GREAT match-up!! Two of the best goalies in the league duking it out, and sniper-like scorers in between!

If I had to call it, I'd say the Lightning will win, but Kolzig is a formidable goaltender, and I'm hoping he'll put in an award-winning performance.

2003 Lightning resembles 2002 Stanley Cup finalist
No. 3 seed Carolina made a surprising run last year. Some say No. 3 seed Tampa Bay can do it, too.

TAMPA -- Hey, check out this season's NHL standings. Now take a peek at last season's. Notice anything familiar?

The Lightning won the Southeast this season with 93 points and a record of 36-25-16-5. The Hurricanes won last season with 91 points at 35-26-16-5.

Tampa Bay scored 219 goals, Carolina 217. The Lightning allowed 210 goals, the Hurricanes 217.

Eerie or significant?

With Tampa Bay opening the playoffs Thursday against Washington at the St. Pete Times Forum, you know memories of Carolina's improbable run to the Stanley Cup final are being dusted off.

Can the Lightning be this season's Hurricanes? Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford doesn't see why not.

"They're real strong," he said. "Tampa is in a situation in which, everything being equal, they're in position to make a really good run. It's always hard to compare, but I truly feel that if you get into the playoffs, with the parity in the league, you can win the Stanley Cup."

Tampa Bay has had the Hurricanes on the brain for almost a year. It wasn't lost on many that the Lightning, despite losing three of five games in the season series, outscored the Hurricanes 11-10.

Carolina's $33-million payroll ($5-million below last season's average) gave hope to all small-market teams. And when training camp opened, Lightning players weren't shy about making comparisons.

When Tampa Bay clinched a playoff spot, the players, among themselves, did it again.

"I don't know if there is a lot of comparisons with the personnel, but the bottom line is that's a team that nobody expected to do anything in the playoffs," captain Dave Andreychuk said. "I don't know if that is happening around here. I know we expect more."

Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said there is no comparison. The Lightning is better.

"They're more dangerous because they have more weapons and an elite goaltender," he said. "You can play well against the Lightning and not beat them. They don't need everything to be perfect to win. The other team can have things go right and still lose the series. It will be interesting to see how they go through the playoffs."

The Lightning starts with a statistical advantage.

Carolina had one 30-goal scorer, the Lightning two, Vinny Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis with 33 each.

Carolina had one 70-point player, the Lightning four: Vinny Prospal (79), Lecavalier (78), Brad Richards (74) and St. Louis (70).

Carolina's top-scoring defenseman was Sean Hill with 33 points. Tampa Bay's Dan Boyle had 53.

Carolina's regular-season power play was 12th at 16.1 percent. The Lightning was 10th at 17.9.

Carolina's penalty kill was slightly better, 83.7 percent to 83.3.

The Hurricanes also benefited from a playoff classic, a hot goaltender. At various times, it was Arturs Irbe and Kevin Weekes. The Lightning is in pretty good shape with Nikolai Khabibulin and John Grahame.

One thing Tampa Bay cannot control is luck. The Hurricanes got breaks when the No. 1-seeded Bruins and No. 2 Flyers were upset in the first round by the Canadiens and Senators, respectively.

Forget about getting any help, Lightning coach John Tortorella said.

"What I've always taken from what the Carolina Hurricanes did last year is they played as a team," he said. "We've grown up that way, and the players understand you do that and you're successful.

"You hope to get on a run like Carolina did because everything came together and they believed. They didn't do anything special. It's a matter of just feeling special at a time of the year. That's the key, feeling good about yourself and feeling like you can win."

"Carolina caught lightning in a bottle," Hitchcock said. "They were very strong in their team approach toward the end of the year. Timing was everything. The Lightning is in a different situation. They've been a solid team since Day 1."

And that's a nice way to go into Game 1.

Hmmm. Interesting quotes from Hitchcock. The Canes led the division from the end of October to the end of the season. From the time of the Oly break until the end of the season they looked very strong. Oh well.

Wow, Hitchcock sounds pretty down on the Canes from last season, doesn't he?

at first when I read this I thought the same thing:
"They're more dangerous because they have more weapons and an elite goaltender,"

but, after soaking it in, I realized he's right. Do we have a Khabibulin? no, most definitely not. Irbe and Weekes both got very very hot at the Perfect times. When one faltered, the other picked it up, in a big way. But, would I say that either of them are "elite" goaltenders? no.

we got to the SCF last year because of four things.
1. HEART
2. Timing- things fell into place at all the right times
3. Hard work
4. Breaks (see #2)

That being said... Yes, T.B. has a better team I think. More firepower, and better goaltending (on paper).

will they have the heart and teamwork to do what we did? who knows. they'll certainly need a couple of breaks. Anything can (and does) happen in the playoffs. I think their chances are very good on getting by the Craps. 2nd round could be rough for them though...

Bad wrist could hamper Jagr's opening series vs. Lightning
April 7, 2003
SportsLine.com wire reports

ODENTON, Md. -- After years of beating the Washington Capitals in the playoffs, Jaromir Jagr finally gets a chance to help them win a series.

He just has to figure out a way to play with his sore right wrist.

"I cannot do things I could do before," said Jagr, staring at the wrist he broke nearly one month ago. "I have to change it somehow. ... It's not good, but I'm not going to miss the playoffs."

The uncertainty over Jagr's wrist dampens the excitement of his first playoff appearance with the sixth-seeded Capitals, who open their Eastern Conference series Thursday at Southeast Division winner Tampa Bay.

"I think everybody in the Washington organization has been looking forward to the day when Jaromir Jagr puts on his skates for his first playoff game," coach Bruce Cassidy said. "We know how much he enjoys being the go-to guy in the playoffs -- I just hope his health allows him to do that."

Half of the NHL's eight first-round, best-of-7 series begin Wednesday. Eastern Conference top seed Ottawa hosts the New York Islanders, while Western Conference regular-season champ Dallas faces Edmonton for the sixth time in seven years. Toronto opens at Philadelphia.

On Thursday, Detroit begins its Stanley Cup defense at home against Anaheim. Playoff newcomer Minnesota is at Colorado, which won its NHL-record ninth straight division title. St. Louis, making its 24th consecutive playoff appearance, travels to Vancouver.

The Capitals, who expect to lose another $20 million this year, have invested $11 million per year in Jagr to get them over the playoff hump. Six times between 1991 and 2001 he helped Pittsburgh eliminate Washington in the playoffs, but injuries and adjustment pangs in a new city made his first season with his new team a disappointment. The Capitals didn't even make the playoffs a year ago.

Now it's payoff time.

"This is the main reason the organization wanted to get him, was to have the game-breaker in the playoffs," center Jeff Halpern said. "We didn't get to see it last year. To know that when the game's on the line to have a guy like that, that can win a game for you, turn it around for you, this time of year that's so important."

This season has been better for Jagr, but it's been far from smooth. He's had to form a relationship with rookie coach Cassidy, who never had to deal with superstars in the minor leagues and has had to tinker with some of the ideas he brought to the NHL.

Jagr played well early as the Capitals struggled, then hit a December goal drought that sapped his confidence even as the team zoomed into first place. Just when team, player, and coach were all hitting stride together, along came the wrist injury that cost him six games down the stretch.

Jagr returned two weeks ago against Montreal, but he hasn't been the same. He didn't score in the final six games, ending the season with a team-high 36 goals.

"Every day it's getting better and better," Jagr said. "I might have come back too early, but I had to come back because I wanted to get into shape and be ready for the playoffs."

Cassidy is concerned Jagr will put too much pressure on himself in the first few games against Tampa Bay. Jagr's reputation, his huge contract and the fact that the Capitals haven't won a playoff series since 1998 combine to make this series a near must-win for the franchise.

"If we don't put too much pressure on him in the first round, and that extra couple of weeks helps him, it allows him to be the guy," Cassidy said. "But the spotlight's on him. He knows it. He relishes it.

"If we're going to go deep into the playoffs, we need him 100 percent. He's going to have to carry this team upfront. You can win a round if the power play gets hot, if your goaltender gets hot, but in the end he has to be the guy to lift us."

The coach's words aside, Jagr knows the pressure is there.

"I don't know what people expect me to do," Jagr said. "If they expect something good, that means they think I'm still a good player, and that's positive. I just have to make sure I satisfy them."

I think Tampa Bay has a much better chance of making it past the 2nd round if they beat the Capitals than if the Capitals beat the Bolts. The Capitals have an absolutely horrible record against teams higher in the standings than them. Coupled with Jagr's injuries and it just doesn't bode well.

If they give out complementary posters depicting the front of the "Jagr Hity" album and everyone holds them up during the games, Jagr will be distracted and the Bolts will win in 5. :D

folgers The Tampa roster has talent from top to bottom, young to old, while Washington's got.....well, Kolzig and Jagr.

Lang?

Nylander?

Zubrus?

Gonchar?

Bondra?

Kono/Halpern/Grier?

Klee?

Sutherby (Young Stars MVP)?

Even the Lightning coach and players said that the Caps have more talent, but the Bolts are playing better as a team. This will be a fun one, and I'm obviously cheering for the Caps, but I don't see there being any question that the Caps have more talent (if they show up to play).

I can agree with Nylander and maybe Zubrius. Of course Nylander...

Lang--well as a Pens fans who's watched him for years--he isn't anything with a big name on his line. He played with Straka and Jagr in PGH. I could score goals with them. Now granted, playing with them and refined his skills, but he still isn't worth what WSH stole him away from PGH for.
(Can you all here the bitterness)

I don't think WSH will win with their line-up of Pittsburgh Has Beens and Never Will Bes (Kip Miller---hahahahaha!) Honestly though--thanks to Mr. Computer$$. Taking Jagr's cancer out of the PGH lockerroom was the best thing we could've had happen. I would rather be in last and 2nd to last place than have Jagr corrupting my team and coach. Just ask Ron Wilson.

Gonchar sure is the real deal though! I love him!

What ever happened to Mr. GrewupinMarylandandalwaysaCapsfan? Boy, he's been quiet this year.

We watched the end of this game and there was some major booing going on. Booing during the period and major booing during their last PP (that pretty much sucked). That's gotta hurt, a sold out+ game and not even a goal to celebrate.

Yeah, I was surprised at the crowd size (when they mentioned it). Good for them - remember the Canes only had a little over 15k at the first NJ game last year.

You know, I keep trying to pull for the Lightning, but for some reason I was happy they didn't win last night. Can't figure it out.

What....the.....heck was Boyle thinking???? The ref there right in front of him, he does a nifty little crowd-pleasing hit into the Lightning's box and then keeps pushing him down so he stays there? Well, he just botched the Lightning's biggest chance of the period to build some momentum!

Honestly I hate the Caps and Tampa Bay....but I guess I hate the Bolts less. But everytime I hear them compare themselves to us ("Oh....if Carolina can do it so can we") like what we did last year was easy, I get a little less enamored with them. Maybe I should be flattered that we've paved the way....but I'm not. I hope they take out the Caps but I'm not too keen on seeing them go much further.

My head is telling me to pull for Tampa Bay, but I have to admit (again) that I was happy to see them lose. Bad me. Now maybe I'll pull for Tampa Bay to win in DC since it hasn't happened for 11 straight games in DC.

I do feel bad for the home crowds that don't get to see their team win ('cept Detroit, they've seen a lot of winning). At least they scored some goals today!

I don't have serious loyalties either way, though I lean towards the Caps because a team mostly comprised of young hotheads (this is just my opinion, y'all.... i'm truly sorry if I'm offending any Bolts fans out there) just doesn't float my boat. Victory sits as poorly on a young ego as diamonds on a 20 year old woman.

And besides, Kolzig is a netminding titan. Unbelievable to watch. He has a very odd economy of motion for a man of his size.

Khabibulin is a high-strung, Apaloosa-eyed goalie that jerks and twitches and must have twenty extra joints in his body that other people don't have. I swear I've seen that man swivel in various directions that just aren't supposed to be possible. He seems streaky though. Brilliant one minute, soft the next. But always interesting.

Thank ye ma'am! I'm writting a paper while I'm watching so I'm missing stuff. Stupid school.....always scheduling finals during the playoffs! Don't they check the calender?

And at 8 I must go watch Buffy (Mr SHC mandated) and miss a whole hour! I need to get my priorities straight!

Hyena....the Caps (Zubrus) got a penalty shot (got hooked by Prospal I think) but missed. Pretty unimpressive from my seat.

That is what Tivo is for... :)

We are watching this game on our new front projector that came in today... roughly a 70" TV right now, though we are still experimenting on what size we want. :spin:

Well....I'm definitely glad the Lightning won. The Caps fans there sure weren't happy with the ending of the game though.... I wish St. Louis' goal would have been the game winner. I can't remember the last time I've seen a 5 on 3 powerplay in overtime. Both calls seemed deserved though....what did you guys think? I really can't even remember what Jagr did to get the first penalty!

I hate to see fans litter the ice with garbage. Show a little dignity in defeat for crying out loud. Great game though. Washington just wouldn't go away. And that little St. Louis just gives me a warm fuzzy feeling when he scores. Oh and John Forslund did a nice job as usual. :)

I think it's great if the penalties were deserved. I hate worrying about major players getting injured because the refs have no nads and let things get out of hand. I don't care if it is the 5th OT, see a penalty and call it!! (Assuming it is a penalty with the possibility of injury.. I am not talking covering the puck or a handpass here)

I also REALLY hate how they always seem to want to make sure each side has the same amount of penalty minutes.. regardless of how many infractions each team really commits.

3 cheers for refs with balls ;)

I agree that if a penalty actually occurs it should be called no matter what period it is, but in reality they usually aren't. I wish the refs would be somewhat consistent, sometimes you can tackle a guy late in the game with no call, sometimes you can't.

I'm no Jagr lover, but he got called on the retaliation penalty after he got elbowed twice in the face. Lost his temper after the no call on him. I don't blame the Washington fans for being upset after the game. I don't think Caniacs would be very happy if the same thing happened to us, lose in OT in a playoff game in the RBC, because of a 5-3.

I still think the Caps win this series. :smoke:

stupid fans throw junk on the ice. I don't care how mad you are, keep your empty water bottles and beer cups to yourself. idiots

every game that is played, the Caps can't beat them enough. I seem to be developing a real loathing for the Lightening. Don't know why, but I just want them to lose and lose big.
