yeah baby. this is what I've been waiting for. I think canes fanes will be able to enjoy some smiles out of these games, as the flyers put some beatings on the leafs.

I have a lot of confidence in these boys this year (for those of you that don't know, I grew up just outside of philly.. been a flyers fan since I grabbed my first stick at 4.. and always will be)... of course I have to have that small seed of fear in the back of my mind of the plague of playoffs in philly. it's not usually pretty.

last year's 1st round against ottawa sure wasn't. but... it's a new year. it's time to get past the 1st round. toronto is our speedbump.

time to jackhammer.

I am totally looking forward to seeing the Leafs get their butts handed to them by the Flyers. The thing that most stuff I've read seems to think will be the big question mark is Roman Cechmanek. I feel like the Leaf's defense (or lack thereof) may be a pretty big question mark as well. They are certainly well matched teams physically. It's gonna be a fun series to watch!

I'm really not sure Roman is as big of a question mark as he has been in the past. In the last 6 games he's started, he's gone 4-0-2, with a GA of 5, a SV% of .960, and 2 shutouts.

go back a few weeks, and add 3 more shutouts. dude has gotten on track. the question mark for me with this team, is the powerplay. which has been Dismal.

I think this series has the makings of a classic. I certainly won't be missing any of the games! As much as I was looking forward to Ottawa finally getting their playoff revenge against Toronto, I would certainly be just as happy if the Leafs were eleminated early. Cechmanek needs to come up big in this series against the likes of Sundin and Nolan though. I think that Belfour will be strong throughout the series. Unfortunately there's only so much he can do with the defense out in front of him. Quinn was looking to help him out considerably with the addition of Wesley but him being out for possibly the entire first round doesn't help Belfour or the Leafs any. I was looking forward to watching him play...

Yeah the Flyers collapsed last playoffs and scored an NHL record grand total of 2 goals in 5 games but they should bounce back strong this year. As SHC said though, Cechmanek is a big question mark. He has the potential to win or lose this series for them. Last year he called out his teammate's though during the playoffs and did a bit of fussing. He needs to avoid that and just play his role to the best of his ability.

This series can (and probably will) get very ugly though. Particularly if the Leafs start to lose their grips on the series. Much has been made in the Toronto papers about with their late-season acquisitions and play this year how they finally may make it all the way to the finals..... I don't see that happening. It's a shame for fans of the losing team in this series that they don't get to continue on. Both teams had an excellent year and go into these playoffs with high hopes. That'll just make for a more exciting first round playoff matchup for us fans! Again, this should be a great one and I'm looking for the Flyers to win this in 7. I'm seeing the Flyers take a 3-2 series lead, get blown out in the next game (I think Cechmanek will play one poor game) but then take the series in game 7.

Well since I live in Philly and I am a diehard Flyers fan.....I really think the boys will beat the leafs in a long, tough series. Roman is not our problem he never has been....and especially not this season...him and Esche have the share of the Jennings trophy and yes it helps to have a good defensive style and team for once. Our biggest problem will be and seemed to be all year but not as of late scoring enough goals! sometimes the flyers decide to show up and score then other itmes they can't buy a goal. with the addition to amonte and my boy johnny leclair being back that doesn't seem to be a problem...would be nice to see some other guys help out too..like recchi and sami but who knows. i think the flyers will come away with the win and if they do will go far maybe not the cup but better than the last couple of years! LETS GO FLYERS! Sorry I know this is a canes board. I like them too

can't agree with you that Roman has never been our problem. in previous years he's been incredibly streaky. he drops bombs during the playoffs accusing management of liking boosh more than him (stating it was probably because he was cech. always great to start dissention during the playoffs when you're already getting your arse kicked). he has a habit of creating a stir, and not always backing it up with play.

yes, he CAN be one of the best goalies in the eastern conf, imo. but that's not always the case.

however, at this point, I'd agree that he's not the big concern for the flyguys. he's had a very good season, and the last few weeks have been vezina worthy.

the most I can logically hope for is the EC Finals. I don't think that Roman, at this point in his career, is the guy that's going to lead us to the holy land.

Amonte was a very good addition, and Johnny Vermont being back is Huuuuuge. some more guys need to step up tho.

This will be a long bone-crunching series. Flyers come out on top though.

Maybe it's just me, but Cechmanek reminds me of Archie. No style at all, just whatever you have to do (or use) to stop the puck. Strange.

Philly has been, IMO, a team that hasn't gotten much attention compared to other teams this year, mostly due to the surprise teams making the playoffs.

But I think that Cechmanek can handle it; and the Flyers team is incredible. I think that they can go quite far this season.

Flyers in 6 or 7.

As much as I truely LOATHE Toronto, this won't be an easy match-up. Belfour has been standing tall in goal ( *ack*!!!) and the Flyers have been up one minute, down the next. But I really like Jeremy Roenick and have confidence that the Flyers can win this. Too bad the Leafs are like rabid pitbulls with a death-wish.

And if he falters, Robert Esche can come in and play very well for a backup...sometimes I almost think they'd be better off in starting Esche.

I hate to admit it, but I think Toronto will win this series. Belfour will carry them. Toronto in 6.

I don't think you have to worry about roman going crazy and calling the team out again ....he has been constantly made a part of the team ...the flyers have a group of guys that meet like an inner circle and roman was brought into that and he gets to tell them how he feels or what he thinks is wrong and they listen ....so he feels more like a part of the team ...and hitchcock knows how to handle or deal roman unlike barber.

and i must agree roman is a flopper and scary at times....lol....i love when he stops it with his head the cranium carum or however u spell it...lol

oh yeah... never would I doubt Hitch's ability to 'handle' someone better than Billy could ever dream of. that will be THE difference in this playoff run as opposed to last year's shalacking.

lol@ stopping a puck with his head. he is funny (albeit is Very Scary to philly fans) to watch.

I think we'll be alright though.

lol, yes. though I'd rather see flashbacks of Pelle

Wasn't he the first goalie to actually shoot toward the net with the intention of scoring?

Anyone seen the video of Evgeny Nabokov scoring that goal two seasons ago? Awesome....I've been trying to find it ever since.

And I'm OT again.

And as much as I like to watch Jeremy Roenick play, I don't think the Flyers will make it past Toronto ~ they've just been too rabid this year. But, it will definitely be a fantastic game series. Go Flyers! :)

Gilmour not expected back until at least second round

April 8, 2003
TORONTO (AP) -- Doug Gilmour's knee injury has not healed enough for him to be in the Toronto Maple Leafs' lineup until the second round of the playoffs, if at all.

Any hope that the 39-year-old center might rejoin the Leafs late in their opening-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers was dashed after an MRI on his left knee. He has medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligament damage.

``There is no way I can,'' Gilmour said Monday night, dismissing suggestions that he might be ready for Game 6 or 7. ``Right now time is dictating when I'll be back. I can't just put a freeze on everything and go play.''

Gilmour expects to have another MRI in the next two weeks.

``It's frustrating but not altogether unexpected,'' he said. ``Thursday will mark four weeks since the injury and the original estimate was six weeks.

``I saw the guys yesterday and wished them luck. It's going to be tough to watch.''

Gilmour's left knee was injured when he collided with the Calgary Flames' Dave Lowry on March 13.

The Maple Leafs open their best-of-seven series Wednesday night in Philadelphia.

The Leafs are just hanging on for dear life right now. They've taken advantage of Cechmanek's inability to stop the puck to be sure (3 goals on 8 shots) but they haven't gotten a single shot since that last goal. One shot all 2nd period thus far and the Flyers have just gotten a powerplay....

Although that may be enough for them in this series, even with Philly being superior at every other aspect. I really wish Philly would've made a play for Irbe or some goalie before the deadline.

The commentators mentioned the Philly had a chance at Belfour this past off-season and even Cujo the season before that but decided to stick with Cechmanek thinking he was the goalie that would take them to the cup. Yes this is only one game but didn't look too hot in goal..... I think game 2 will make or break this series. If he's able to bounce back and play better in that game the Flyers should be able to take the game. They outplayed the Flyers all game long except for the early 2 on 1's. The Leafs were very opportunistic on their chances and capitalized on Cechmanek.

I think if the Flyers win game 2 they will ultimately come out on top in this series but should they lose game 2 in the same fashion they lost this one (outplay Toronto top to bottom but fall short in the goaltending department) I think the Leafs may be able to take this series in as few as five games.

These playoffs are shaping up to be simply awesome.

Footnotes:

* There were 18,937 at the First Union Center, a rare non-sellout for a Flyers playoff game. (capacity is 19,500)

* Antropov didn't return after hurting his foot in the second.

Yes we are not selling out here for the playoffs as of today u could still get pairs of lower level seats as well as upper levels. alot of season ticket holders didn't pick up the playoff tickets because of the early exits in the first rounds in the recnet years.....people are getting tired of investing their money in tickets and the flyers not playing well. not too many regualr season games were sellouts either. the price can be an issue too.

I've never pulled for Philly in my life, but I think I hurt myself during the 3rd period tonight. Here's to hoping this series turns around & Philly sends these thugs home in the first round.

it's only one game... that's why these things are best of 7.

cechmanek wasn't sharp.. though he did have some bad luck. flyguys gave up a lot of odd man rushes (how about a 3 on 2 Shorthanded??? WTF???).

that'll change. first period they obviously had playoff jitters going... and if it wasn't for the 1st period, they would've won the game.

I do think game 2 will be a big one... though I won't say it'll be a make or break situation. it's still only game 2.

as for philly taking Irbe.... wow... you must not like philly. :p

one of the things I was talking about last night, was that I used to be glad that my two teams (canes and flyers) were major trading partners. but, after watching sami miss a puck at the point, leading to a goal.... and the mere thought of possibly having Tanabe go to philly.....
I'm scared!!!!!!!!!

I guess I was thinking Tucker returned to the lineup!?

Two more Toronto players injured

PHILADELPHIA, April 9 (UPI) -- With three regulars already out of their lineup, the Toronto Maple Leafs lost two more Wednesday night.

Center Nik Antropov and right wing Darcy Tucker were injured in Toronto's 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game One of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Antropov suffered a right foot injury in the second period when a slap shot by Philadelphia defenseman Eric Desjardins struck his skate. After Desjardins scored on a rebound, Antropov left the ice and returned to the locker room.

Best known for his questionable hit on New York Islanders captain Michael Peca in last season's playoffs, Tucker was sideswiped by Flyers defenseman Eric Weinrich midway through the first period, and immediately went for medical attention. The extent of his injury is unknown.

Neither player returned, and both are questionable for Game Two, which is Friday in Philadelphia.

"It does appear that Nik broke that bone that (Phil) Housley broke," said Toronto Coach Pat Quinn, referring to the fractured foot his defenseman suffered in February. "With Tucker, we'll do an MRI (Thursday) and see how extensive the damage was there."

The Maple Leafs already are without defenseman Glen Wesley and centers Travis Green and Doug Gilmour. Wesley is sidelined with a broken foot, but may return for Game Three, while Green is day-to-day with a rib injury.

Gilmour suffered an injured left knee in his first game after being re-acquired from Montreal at the trade deadline. He is not expected back before the conference semifinals.

This is really, really horrible....but it couldn't have happened to two nicer guys. I despise them both. Still wouldn't wish injury on them but if it's already happened.....

I thought the third period had a decidedly less thuggish feel. I guess Domi and Corson can't do it all alone.

No, no interest that I've heard of. It's the regularness that Philly/Canes trades happen that has me worried.

personally, I think the philly D is pretty solid.

think I need to give Bobby and JR a ring and tell them I'll help them decide who they DON'T want from each other (thought that's more of a one-sided worry, imo). lol

I don't think will be worrting about the defense in philly for next year....we have an over stock of sorts in our system.....we may have to get rid of some of the defense we have....we have 2 very good prospects coming over this year and though they may not play for the flyers next season look for them in the ahl. defense used to be our problem so clarke drafted really well in that position...example that we were able to trade bruno to the canes...because jimmy vandermeer took over his spot on the flyers by playing well and with him and the 2 young prospects i was talking about....we were able to give him up.

Injury update

Darcy Tucker, whose left knee was hyperextended in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Flyers, is not hurt as seriously as was first feared. An MRI yesterday showed no ligament damage and the forward could hardly bring himself to say he won't be ready for tonight. He won't be but, with two off days before Game 3, he may play Monday at Toronto.

"As soon as the swelling and pain have subsided, he should be ready to go," said coach Pat Quinn. "It doesn't look like it's not a long range (injury)."

Glen Wesley, who suffered a broken foot March 24 at Boston, skated with the club again yesterday and his return seems imminent. Game 3 might not be unrealistic for him, either.

"Today was the biggest test I've faced. This is as close as you can get to a game-pace situation," said Wesley. "I'm very encouraged."

Even Nik Antropov, who cracked a bone in his right foot Wednesday, spoke hopefully of being able to play at some point in the second round. He projected his absence at three to four weeks.

Why couldn't Brashear finish Domi off? Grrrr!!! Sami sure was playing more physically. Good game, glad to see Philly grab that win!

Brashear skated by and brushed up against Domi once and the next time Brashear came by Domi elbowed the h*ll out of him. Then when Brashear turned around and looked at him he was making a throat cutting motion across his neck. Maybe he was just saying "nice necklace" but I doubt it. I think we all know what he meant. Domi's face seemed to take the worst of their fight though. It was great!

HILARIOUS FIGHT!!! If ever there was a perfect physical match-up in hockey, that had to be it. I don't care for Domi myself but that "cat who ate the canary" face after the fight was a frikkin' scream.... :smoke: Unrepentently awful. That's funny.
