4/7/2003
NEW YORK – Colorado Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk and Dallas Stars’ goaltender Marty Turco were named today co-winners of the National Hockey League Player of the Week Award for the period ending April 6.
Hejduk and Turco edged Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltender Roman
Cechmanek (3-0-0, 0.67 goals-against average, one shutout) and Atlanta Thrashers’ forward Dany Heatley (four goals, five assists in four games).
Hejduk totaled nine points in four games (six goals, three assists) and was +9 to help the Avalanche clinch their NHL record ninth consecutive division title. On March 31, Hejduk collected three points (two goals, one assist) in a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks.
On April 2 at Los Angeles, he scored one goal in a 5-3 loss and followed with a two-goal effort in a 4-3 overtime victory on Apr. 4 at Anaheim. He closed out the week with three points (one goal, two assists) in a 5-2 home victory over the St. Louis Blues (April 6). The goal was his 50th of the season and earned him the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the NHL’s goal-scoring leader for the 2002-03 season.
Turco led Dallas to first place in the Western Conference by posting a 3-0-0 record, a 0.33 goals-against average, .985 save percentage and two shutouts. He started the week by shutting out the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 on March 31, and posted a 2-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on April 2. He closed the season with a 2-0 shutout win over the Nashville Predators, securing first place in the Western Conference.
In 55 games this season, Turco posted a record of 31-10-10, 1.72 goals-against average and .932 save percentage. His League-leading 1.72 GAA is the NHL’s lowest since New York Rangers’ goaltender Dave Kerr posted a 1.54 GAA in 1939-40. Additionally, the Stars and New Jersey tied for the Jennings Trophy with the League’s best defensive record (166 goals allowed).
