Well that stinks. No. 1 would've been nice. The hockey gods strike again.

Now it becomes interesting...

Will Florida go for the goalie, Fleury, given that they already have a good young goalie in Luongo or someone else?

Will it make it a much easier decision for the Canes if Fleury is gone by the second pick? If you put stock in what JR said a few weeks ago, he was really interested in centers but if he got the first pick, he would probably have to take Fleury. Perhaps this has worked out where he will just be able to go with his original plans.

At least it's something to keep us busy talking about the next two months. :D

While it pisses me off that we won't get the first pick, I guess it's alright.

If Florida looks interested in Fleury, would the Canes trade up a pick?

Sums up our season......high probability of winning the 1st pick and of course we get 2nd. With the way this (last?) season's gone I'm not suprised.
This will be an interesting draft. So deep....guess that's good for us. Good that there isn't one standout player. Will the other rounds of the draft be in this same order also? (Florida, Carolina...)

hey ZJ- you said a few weeks back JR said he was interested in centers. I don't recall that. are you sure?

look at the centers we have... where in the world would he put another one?? it's pretty tight in there already, and there will be a couple battling for spots come camp.

That's EXACTLY what I said. Simply unbelievable. But think about it for a second. We'll still almost guaranteedly get what we want. We'll just have to wait second in line. Kovalchuk was a second overall, but I'll bet that before that, Atlanta fans may have thought the same thing as us.

ESPN said something like we'd be interested in centers as well during the game yesterday. I've already made my mind up that I'd pick Horton. Why? I'm not sure, but he will be a bad man in 4 years or so.

JR said it during his weekly call with Adam Gold on the Buzz 2 or 3 weeks ago. I definitely recall that he said at that time that centers were his highest priority for the draft.

I think JR is bluffing all over the place. I've heard him say centers, I've heard him say Fleury and I think it was Chuck who said that he was looking at D-men.

And about not getting the first pick....[insert big, loud, F-word that I'm not allowed to say here]! When is our kharma gonna turn around? What comes around goes around? Well it's gone around and around and around us...can it go bug someone else now?

Although, in reality, with what I've read in this draft #1 vs #2 probably isn't that much different. And poor Pittsburgh too.

Horton would be good. Not that I know anything about him, but I was named after my great-grandfather, who's name was Nathan Horton. :D

you have GOT to be kidding! i can't believe we had basically a 50/50 chance of getting the 1st pick and we didn't get it. well, yes i can.

does it look like florida is going to get fleury? if so, i can't see us getting another center either. zherdev still sounds like our next best bet. i thought there was supposed to be one last 'front office access' this week...if so, maybe JR will drop some hints. ;)

Kovalchuk was a second overall, but I'll bet that before that, Atlanta fans may have thought the same thing as us.

Actually, Kovy was first. Heatley was second in his draft, behind Islanders goalie Dipietro, or however it's spelled.

And that my friends, just goes to show why you should never waste the number one pick on a goalie unless he's the second coming of Bernie Parent.

Because only God saves more than Bernie. :spin:

(what do you want from me? I'm in Philly. I can't make more than three posts that mention goalies without talking about Bernie.) :p

Oh, yeah I kinda messed up there; it was the toothless wonder (that's Heatley) who was drafted 2nd. And you're right; DiPietro is an example of why NOT to draft a goalie #1.

I was thinking the Panthers came out of absolutely nowhere to win the draft but in actuality this was the case:

"Thanks to a draft-day deal with Columbus last year, the Panthers held the right to trade first-round picks for the 2003 NHL entry draft with the Blue Jackets. As a result, Florida had the second-greatest likelihood of winning of winning today's draft lottery - 24.9 per cent - the combined total of both teams' percentage."

So they were pretty much neck and neck with us and.....came out ahead.

Okay, so we pick second. That's not so bad. I would expect us to take someone that can play center or maybe a wing. If we take D men, what with the logjam of good kids ready to wear red sweaters in Raleigh next season, I would be very surprised.

JR, I will say it again: the most goals at the end of the game wins.
