You guys may already know all about this one but I thought this was pretty interesting. I recieved an e-mail this morning from "support@charter.net" telling me that my Charter e-mail account (it's an old one I don't even use anymore) had been temporarily disabled because of unauthorized access and that I should open the attachment (MoreInfo.pif) to learn more. Being that I'm not stupid, I immediately went to Charter.net to see if maybe this was some BS virus thing and sure enough, it is. I don't know if any of you are Charter Pipeline users (none of you seem frustrated enough to be ;) ) but just in case here is their Hoax Alert on this one. I'd imagine if the virus is doing this with Charter it's likely to be doing it with other providers as well.

Hoax Alert -
March 3nd, 2004

Please note: A new computer virus/worm is spreading through the Internet, which may appear to be coming from Charter. The virus sends a message that uses one of these email addresses as its "from" address:

* management@charter.net
* administration@charter.net
* staff@charter.net
* noreply @charter.net
* support@charter.net

If you use email from another source, the message would appear to come from that domain, such as management@{domain}.com The message will tell you that there is a problem with your email service or computer and it will direct you to open the attachment. Please delete these emails.
DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT.
The attachment contains a worm that will infect your computer. This worm/virus is referred to as Bagle.k and/or Beagle.k on the Internet. For more information to help you decide if the email is real or a virus/hoax, or if your computer is already infected, you may want to visit: Symantec or McAfee.

For more information regarding this computer worm or how to remove it, please visit security.charter.com.

Sneaky suckers, aren't they?

they are sneaky *******s. i got an email similar to that -- from my own domain name, from a support address that doesn't exist, lol. :D of course i didn't open it, but i can only imagine that a lot of people aren't so careful...

yeah, got one last night.

sad part is, those scams get so many people every time they're run.

stupid people should just donate some of that money to me. I'll even send 'em a thankyou card instead of just running off with their dough! :)

For some reason I've gotten two e-mails that Yahoo has detected this virus on in an attachment, in the past 2 days. Both have come from my friend who is currently living in Mexico. Think that the virus is still making its way around there?

that virus is sometimes sidecar'd in Sasser, which has made it's rounds bigtime.

Run Stinger (from McAfee) now and then. small 700k program, that will pickup most of what's out there.

I have been getting weird stuff on my computer for several weeks now.. and the pop-ups are driving me crazy.. I even downloaded pop-up protection from MSN and it helped a little but not much.. some of the pop-ups can't be closed and when I reboot and go in, there is a virus...

Speaking of virus protection.. I bought Norton Antivirus 2004 and tried to install it on my computer and I could never get it to download completely. I am going to sell it if anyone is interested in buying it.. I think it was $49.95 but I will see it for $40... I ended up downloading McAfee with no problem...

Just let me know if you are interested.. thanks..

I tried downloading it off the web when I purchased it and that didn't work.. so they gave me a refund and I bought the CD at Target. Target can't give me a refund but they said they could exchange it for the exact same product..

Two things I would recommend.

Panda Antivirus software. I've run this for a couple of years now and it works like a champ and the price is well within the Norton/Macafee price range.

Spybot. It will find all of the spyware that is on your PC and try to protect you from any further intrusions by siad spyware.

Anybody else have some stuff they use that is better let me know.

Thanks for the advice.. I had AdAware on my computer, but I still kept getting bombed with spyware.. and when I did my first run for viruses with McAfee, it found suspect files in AdAware.. so I uninstalled it..

Mona, AdAware might be why you couldn't get your Norton to install. I think I had to disable AdAware last time I installed Norton. (no clue why as I'm pretty computer stupid but that's what I had to do!)

I have AdAware and Spybot both on my laptop. I get warnings all the time from AdAware saying my anti-virus might pick something suspect up in it that is not a virus but it never actually does.
