I really like Calgary as an upset here. I think they have the team to do it, especially considering how Detroit played against the Preds. Miika Kiprusoff is a great goalie when he's on his game.
Go Flames!

I think Kiprusoff's good introduction to being run-over by the Canucks is a good thing.....cause God knows that's Detroit's game plan!! He held up to it well against the 'Nucks and I think he's a good match for the Wings. Calgary over all is!! They're rough and tough and I think Detroit is a little worried.....or at least should be. I really think Calgary might be able to pull this out. I know I'll be throwing every curse I know to try and ensure it!!!
GO FLAMES!!!!

apparently the Red Wings are going to try a new tactic with Calgary......flattery.
Red Wings leery of Iginla & Kiprusoff
Associated Press
4/21/2004
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings respect the Calgary Flames for at least two reasons.
Jarome Iginla and Miikka Kiprusoff.
``Iginla is a powerful and talented forward, who may be playing as well as anyone in the world,'' Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. ``And Kiprusoff has been one of the NHL's most outstanding goaltenders all season.''
Iginla is one of three finalists for the Hart Trophy (league MVP) and Kiprusoff is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy (top goalie).
The Red Wings have been able to have some rest since eliminating Nashville on Saturday while the Flames still were playing Vancouver in an overtime-filled series.
Calgary advanced in the playoffs for the first time since it won the Stanley Cup in 1989, with Mike Vernon in net before he went on to lead the Red Wings to the 1997 title.
``In the Vancouver series our plan was to control the (Brendan) Morrison line and we did a great job of that,'' said Flames coach and general manager Darryl Sutter. ``Now we have to do that with four lines.
``Obviously, they are a level unto themselves.''
The Red Wings, who had the best record during the regular season with some of hockey's all-time greats, are odds-on favourites to win their fourth Stanley Cup in eight seasons.
The Wings survived a scare in the first round against the Predators when their series was tied at 2 after Detroit won the first two games at home.
Facing a second straight first-round knockout, Detroit outscored Nashville 6-1 in the final two games of the series.
Curtis Joseph is Detroit's No. 1 goalie after starting the season on the trading block, then being hobbled with an ankle injury after Dominik Hasek had a season-ending groin injury.
Joseph replaced Manny Legace, who made his first career playoff start, late in Game 4 against the Predators before closing the series strong.
Joseph, who faced Calgary regularly when he played for Edmonton, gave up only one goal on 44 shots in two-plus games.
``That wasn't really a surprise,'' Holland said. ``He played right about the way we expected him to when we signed him two years ago. We played well in front of him defensively, but when we had a breakdown, he made big saves.''
Iginla is among the leading scorers in the playoffs with five goals and three assists.
``With his speed it's tough to outskate him, with his strength it's tough to overpower him,'' Detroit defenceman Jiri Fischer said. ``With his heart there are not very many players who are going to outsmart him. It's not a one-man battle, all the five guys on the ice have to be aware of him on the ice. He's a very good passer, too.''

This stuff is kinda similar to '02 huh? Gelinas scores an OT goal against a Canadian team to send his team to the next round to play the Red Wings, then in the first game of the Red Wings series they come from behind and win early in OT. Awesome work by Gelinas and a perfectly placed shot by Nilsson!

He's jammin'
Former coach knows the net is Gelly's bread and butter
By TODD SAELHOF, CALGARY SUN
The Calgary Flames are learning something about Martin Gelinas the Carolina Hurricanes knew long ago. And what the Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers knew before them.
The kid has a knack for big goals.
Overtime winners, in fact.
"Oh yeah, he's a wonder," said Paul Maurice, the former longtime head coach of the Hurricanes. "Marty's been able to score some huge goals. He's going to get to be known for that."
Already is around here thanks to his OT production in the last two playoff games.
To end Thursday's Game 1 in Detroit, Gelinas did all the hard work on the winning goal scored by Flames teammate Marcus Nilson in the extra session.
And, of course, Gelinas shovelled home the OT winner in Game 7 to advance the Flames past the Canucks and into this second round against the Detroit Red Wings.
It rivalled the overtime winner he netted two seasons ago to extend Carolina's Cinderella run to the Stanley Cup final. With that one, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final series, Gelinas eliminated the heavily favoured Toronto Maple Leafs.
He's also scored OT playoff goals with two of the other three NHL teams on which he's played -- the Oilers and Canucks. All totalled, Gelinas has 17 goals and 45 points in 129 career playoff games.
"I don't know what it is," said Maurice, Gelinas' coach with the 'Canes from 1997-2002. "Marty's probably got a lot of bad breaks around the net. He's been burned through the course of the regular season. But it's like karma for him, because then in the playoffs, they start going in for him."
The only one that didn't go in for him came in Game 4 of the 1999 first-round series against the Boston Bruins. On a how'd-he-miss-it potential OT winner that would have given the 'Canes a 3-2 series lead, Gelinas "double-hit the puck" over an open net -- arguably deflecting the puck off the stick of Ray Bourque. Anson Carter subsequently buried a double-OT chance to win it for the Bruins.
"Freakishly bad luck," said Maurice, whose 'Canes never scored again in losing the series in six games.
"Every time I think about that goal, I always think about how he paid his dues and finally got the conference final goal in Toronto. I'll gladly trade that one in for the goal in Toronto. That was huge."
Truly, it was the biggest in the 'Canes franchise history.
And fittingly, says Maurice, Gelinas scored it, playing alongside youngsters Josef Vasicek and Jaroslav Svoboda.
"That was certainly our best line for the entire two months of those playoffs. Marty drove that line.
"And Carolina never replaced him," when he signed with the Flames on July 2, 2002.
"He's always been a great pro," continued Maurice, who joined CBC's Hockey Night in Canada earlier this season after being relieved of his coaching duties in Carolina. He is set to do late-round playoff analysis for Rogers Sportsnet.
"Things weren't always smooth between Marty and I about his role. But even when that was happening, he kept on working. His heart was always in it."
Just as it is these days with the Flames.
"You can see it," Maurice added. "He just works so hard in front of the net. Without question, it's where he does his best work.
"And I'm an incredibly superstitious guy. So whenever Marty gets his face cut, I've always said he's going to get a goal. When you see him coming back to the bench bleeding, you know he's going to score.
"To see how hard he works, he deserves it. I just like watching the guy play."

Accidental or not, Yzerman might have just cut Warriner's eye open with his stick and there was no call... Certainly Yzerman knows he needs to be aware of where his stick is. Also, Fischer looks like crap again, it's confusing why Lewis is playing him. Joseph also doesn't look very good, giving up a big rebound and looking terrible playing the puck behind the net.

Kiprusoff is playing great! What a scramble to end the first period... Shanahan looked like he was going to have a real break on net a few seconds before that but in his typical fashion he bungled it. Of course if he had held onto the puck he probably would have taken a weak wrister at Kiprusoff's chest or gotten in close and tried a garbage wraparound. The term in Detroit that some fans use when a player gets off a bad shot is that he pulled a "Shanny". :D

I was waiting for Detroit to score that entire powerplay... It feels like I'm seeing a movie I've already seen and didn't like much the first time. A marginal call on Gelinas leads to a powerplay goal for Detroit in game two of a series where the visiting team won game one in OT. Yipee. So I guess it's Wings in 5 then?
folgersnyourcup

2-0 Detroit. The Flames don't have any defensemen left to get them the puck since they were already without 2 of their starters heading into this game and now they are having to play with only 5 due to Warriner being taken out of the game by Yzerman. Amazing play by Dandenault though to get Yzerman the easy goal.

Yelle has had a good game for the Flames, almost scoring a couple times and taking a few sticks right to the face at other points in the game, none of which have been called. It's interesting in these playoffs that very dangerous high sticks that can really leave a player hurt are left going uncalled at the same time as in almost every game of every series there are goaltender interference calls all over the place when the goalie gets his shoulder tapped.

04-24-2004, 04:38 PM
Wow, well this game has turned into a blowout. A couple 5 on 3 goals finally brought some life to the quietest house in the NHL and the Red Wings will even the series at 1. Still, Joseph looked shaky this game and I think should Calgary get more shots in game three they will have a better chance. Hatcher looked lost again but that's to be expected.
To add to this message, Joseph has just been scored on again to make it 5-2. I'd like to change the shaky status of Cujo to awful. Worst goalie remaining in the playoffs by far judging by his current play.

Is this a playoff game or a Detroit love fest? I was confused since the refs (who must be ex-management for Little Ceasar's) have given the Wings pretty much a period long 2 man advantage. Plus, you gotta love seeing a team clutch and grab their way to a win. Sorry...this just irks me soooo bad.
folgersnyourcup
04-24-2004, 05:00 PM
Well to be fair RCF, a lot of the 2-man advantage stuff was deserved. Crosschecks and slashes out of frustration, etc. But I was upset about the way the first two periods were called though. Schneider's hit from behind that knocked the Calgary player face first into the boards was a penalty all the way, as were several high sticking incidents that went uncalled. But, Detroit played well enough to win the game and they did just that.
Highlights of the game for me though were:
-Both Flames goals
-The hit on Chelios followed by the few minutes where he was back in the dressing room
-The Iginla/Hatcher fight
-Yzerman's 2 goals
Though I obviously don't like Detroit, he made some nice strides to get into position to recieve the puck on both of his goals, and he made a great shot on the 2nd one. It's nice to see him continue to step up his play. It seems that whenever it looks like his age may be finally getting to him he turns in a great performance. I'm glad Warriner was able to come back after his high stick though.
This series has the potential to be really great and hard-hitting and the ending of this game seems to indicate just that. Going back to my ridiculously stupid similarities between the Canes cup finals match with Detroit, come to think of it game two ended in a similar fashion as well with the Canes having a 2 man advantage and a rough, penalty-filled final couple of minutes.

No--I agree...they were penalties. I just mean to give Detroit a 'power-play practice period' to fine tune their PP is ridiculous. They didn't call the rest of the game that way, why do it now. Now what this has done, just like our lovely ABC broadcasters repeated over and over, is give them confidence. Their pp unit wasn't scoring, helping Calgary stay in the series. Now with it clicking, thanks to opportune calls by the refs, they just gave themselves the edge.
Fan frustration too. Self-called penalty on me. (-:

UGH....That really sucked on Warrener for real. Yzerman may not have meant what happened to his eye, but he SHOULD have known where he was swinging his stick. I don't really mind if he was defending himself from a check, he should have kept it down or away. BUT putting that unfortunate event aside, it was a FUN as hell game to watch.
I had a blast pretty much. I wore my Wings garb, and for the first real time since the regular season ended and since I was actually off work the whole day, I got back into the feel of what it meant to actually root for the home team lmao. :p I'm a traitor most of the rest of the time. Well, not really bvbecause the Canes are my MAIN team, but kinda because, well nevermind lol. It was different yet a fun different, for now at least.
The two goals by Yzie were great as usual, and I had no complaints with Drapers play. The man does fantastic as usual. You can always count on the Wings to get it started just when you think their goose has been cooked. We all remember the Finals two years ago, they lose a game 1 and then come back with flyign colors....that's what I think will be happening here, even though I think Calgary might be in it for a bit longer than the Canes were. They just have so many great guys, especially Iginla. This should be a fun series to watch.
One complaint I have is that it DID seem that the refs were a bit biased to the Wings. There were tons of calls on Calgary and very little on the Wings who seemed to have just as many if not a little less bad plays on their side. That coulda cost Calgary the game, but hey, it turned out how it turned out. being a homer...and a temp. kindabandwagoner I guess I should have no complaints on how it turned out so...I wont. :p GO WINGS!!!! :smoke:
Steve Yzerman is 100% class. High-sticking and his name are rarely in the same sentence. And frankly, he's had his grill smashed in a billion and a half times from other people high-sticking him (look at the missing teeth on his lower row ala Foote) and he hasn't once whined about it, not even with dentists pulling his upper teeth back out of his head, slapping braces on him to keep them from falling out, and then deciding whether his teeth can be saved or not. It's hockey. It happens. He's not perfect, but he's the last person on the ice to be habitually careless. If someone got his stick to the mouth, it's not like he goes around doing that all the time. After Adam Foote hit him:
"I've done the exact same thing, try to lift a guy's stick and accidentally hit him in the face," Yzerman said. "Suspensions, I think, are for something premeditated, like purposely trying to do things wrong. We're all responsible for our sticks, but things happen."
Exactly. Human error.

I agree with you Meg...Yzerman IS 100% class. I definitely DON'T think it was intentional. He's not that kidn of person at all. But the situation really sucks, no way to get around that I guess. Looking at it again (I taped it lol) He really didn't have the time to put his stick down, either it looks like, I have no idea...everything there happened in like a split second. I blame nothing on him, and I DON'T think it should have been a penalty, because initially it wan't seen by the refs and it wasn't done in malice. Poor Warrener. I just hope all turns out well for him. :)
Eye injuries are a bear, to say the least.

Eye injuries are a bear, to say the least.
I can't imagine. I mean, I'm plagued by constant allergic reactions in my eyes along with the change of seasons, and I wear glasses and contacts (both being annoying) but until something totally horrible and dangerous happens to my eyes, I can only imagine... I hope he gets well soon, and that it isn't serious.
tommy
04-25-2004, 12:26 AM
Not trying to stir up ****e, but I don't care what the intention was. There is no purpose for the stick to be at a person's eye level. Even if you hit the puck at that level, it is high-sticking and it gets whistled if your team gains posession. When Hossa hit Berard in the eye a few years back, he was responsible for his stick, as well. They are dangerous objects that can cause serious injury, and it is the player's responsibility to keep them at a safe level.
However, I am NOT saying it was intentional. Stevie Y has more respect from me than almost any other NHLer. However, someone's reputation should not precede or excuse their irresponsibility.
Shell
04-25-2004, 08:54 AM
agreed. It was certainly not intentional and mistakes do happen.. however, when you send someone to the hospital with your mistake, you should at least get your two minutes in the box regardless of who you are. (especially with some of the marginal calls on Calgary). JMO

Another pretty fluky goal for Detroit there...
Folg, what were you thinking???

My boy Jiri Fischer ties it up, and then Cujo gives up another soft goal. But then again, the defense has left him out to dry.

LOL, I think I was misunderstood. I meant the basketball game analogy in that it felt like it was as simplistic as one, in that a team goes down to one end and scores, then the other team goes down and scores as well. There is absolutely NO way I would miss any of this game for basketball!
A great game so far by Calgary with a nice penalty kill near the end of the 2nd period, and a great save by Kiprusoff right before it.
A very good game thus far.

OMG, HOW can we get Iginla? Not only for the way he plays but they just said he donates $1000 for every goal he scores to charity. Although, I guess if I were making $7.5 million I might manage that too..... That's more than most players do, though.
They also said he sat there this morning after practice and answered every question the press had, never rushed anyone and smiled the whole time. He just sounds like such a great guy.
Poor Woolley just whiffed all to hell.

That's very cool that he donates $1000 for every goal he scores. You know, if the NHL was smart they would try and market him. IMO, he's one of the most well-rounded players, plus he's a class act.

Well, Jarome is on the cover of EA's NHL 2003, so I suppose that is a start. But yeah, he could stand to appear in more NHL related ads and such.
Iggy's quickly become a favorite of mine in the playoffs, and that has been made concrete with what was said about his charity work and behavior. Awesome dude.

Just rambling...I really won't know who to pull for if the Western Conference Finals come down to Calgary and San Jose...

Say it an't so: Oiler fans cheering Flames?
Canadian Press
4/28/2004
EDMONTON (CP) - Oilers fans cheering for the Calgary Flames? Say it ain't so, Joe.
It would never have happened in the 1980s and early '90s when the two clubs waged wild Battles of Alberta that set a standard for gritty, no-holds barred, hockey.
But in the land of fading bumper stickers that proclaim "ABC: Anybody but Calgary," some Oilers fans are begrudgingly climbing onto the Flames bandwagon.
It's nothing like Oiler fever that grips the province's capital when the Oilers are in the playoffs, but there is growing interest in the Little Team That Could in the city to the south.
One bold Oiler fan even posted a note of support on the Calgary Flames website.
"I just wanted to say that despite the fact I am a life-long Oiler fan and thus bred to hate the Flames, I am really glad you guys won. What impressed me most was the team's immense desire to win. You see it in every player on every shift in every game."
Edmonton sports radio show host Bob Stauffer says about 65 per cent of callers to his show are supporting the underdog Flames in their Stanley Cup run against the Detroit Redwings. The Flames lead the best of seven series 2-1.
"Because of the fact the Flames have struggled for the past several years a lot of our listeners have empathy for them and want to see them do well," said Stauffer.
He said the fans of small market teams recognize they share the same problems and the same fate when they have to compete with big market clubs like the Wings.
"A lot of Oiler fans recognize the Oilers and Flames need each other and they are in this battle together," said Stauffer.
Flames fever is spreading across the West.
Dan Riess who runs a Jersey City outlet in Regina said any merchandise with the flaming C on it is flying out the door.
"The red Flames jersey has been extremely popular - hats key chains, any memorabilia," Riess said. "It's really turning into dollars for us here."
There hasn't exactly been a run on Flames apparel in Edmonton sporting goods stores, but there wouldn't have been much to sell in any case.
Flames items aren't normally big sellers in the provincial capital, ranking well below the Oilers, Habs, Canucks and Leafs when it comes to popularity, said Kelly Hodgson, operations manager at United Cycle, the official retailer of the Edmonton Oilers.
Many Oilers fans have come around since the Flames eliminated the Vancouver Canucks in the first round, he said.
"There was an adjustment of about a week or so in there where people said: `Am I a hockey fan or an Oiler fan?' The ones that were Oiler fans found the next greatest team to go to and that was the Flames," said Hodgson.
"I would say the biggest drawing point would be their superstar Jarome Iginla, the fact that he is a hometown kid of ours. It made the team easy to love."
Iginla fever has Allie Serradas at The Metro sports bar cheering on the Flames.
"My lawyer is Iginla's dad - that's probably the only reason why," she explained.
Elvis Iginla has a law practice in Edmonton.
Premier Ralph Klein, the former mayor of Calgary, confessed to media that he is a Flames fan first. He even admitted having some Flames paraphernalia at home.
While the premier can watch the games from a box seat, other Edmontonians might have a tougher time getting in.
Former Oiler winger Dave Hunter, who still can feel the bruises he suffered in those memorable Battles of Alberta, said he has been pulling for the Flames since the Oilers missed out on a playoff berth.
"I am an Albertan," said Hunter, who moved to Edmonton when the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979. "Out here I think we should all stick together."
Tom Barrett, a self-described superfan who penned Oiler fan columns for the Edmonton Journal during many of their playoff runs, said it's tough to admit it but he is rooting for the Flames this year.
"There is no team I would rather see the Oilers beat in the regular season or playoffs, but we're not playing them," he said. "They are like us - little fish trying to be big fish with a little budget."
But Edmonton psychiatrist Doug Spaner, who confesses to being an "embarrassingly avid fan," said he can't bring himself to cheer for another team.
Under no circumstances will he support the Flames and any Oiler fan who does isn't really a fan, he said.
"A lot of people are interested in watching (the Flames) because they like hockey, but if you are a true Oiler fan, you are not interested in the outcome."
"The only fond wish of a true Oiler fan is that nobody wins."

a blurb from an article about Robyn Regehr of the Flames. he's a tough man.
In fact, Rogehr might be the poster boy for the definition of an opportunist, when you consider that his career looked as if it might be in jeopardy in July of 1999. Then, the car he was driving home after a day of water skiing on Lake Blackstrap in northern Saskatchewan was hit head-on by another car that crossed into his lane from out of nowhere.
The accident, which killed the two young men in the other car, fractured both of Regehr's legs and put in doubt the opportunity to fulfill the promise that this former first-round draft had displayed.
Now, Regehr, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound monster who mashes opponents along the boards and in front of the net, has also contributed five points in nine playoff games after getting his first career playoff goal in Game 1.

Commodore inspires much ado about his 'do
By ERIC FRANCIS, CALGARY SUN
Mike Commodore has got a lot going on under that bucket of his these days. Not just because he's been thrust into a crucial role on the Flames blueline but because that mop of his is attracting unprecedented attention from fans, the media and even insects.
"Yeah, there's all kinds of small animals, too, other than mosquitoes," laughed Commodore, who hasn't cut his hair all season.
"It's kind of a mess when I get up."
In fact, it has caused more than a few headaches -- literally.
"Since the beginning of the season, I've had to loosen my helmet up a little bit," said Commodore, who logged 13 minutes of ice in Game 3 Tuesday.
"I have to put water in my hair (before putting on the helmet); otherwise, it doesn't work -- it's too uncomfortable and I get a headache in about 10 minutes. It's so packed in."
One thing he insists doesn't go to his head are the catcalls he receives all over town from fans who instantly recognize the beard and orange afro perched atop his 6-ft. 4-in. frame.
"Every time I go somewhere now, Ogie (Ogelthorpe of Slap Shot fame) is the big one," said Commodore, a.k.a. Sideshow Mike or Carrot Top.
"I go to Eau Claire Market and somebody yells it from 100 yards away and I just kind of wave my hand and laugh. I test-drove a car the other day and the salesmen recognized me, too.
"Since we won that first series, there's been a little bit of press and it's been incredible.
"Maybe it does keep things light when I'm going around town and people are calling me names. There's a lot of pressure and this is the most intense hockey I've had to play ever, so maybe it does (add a little levity)."
Even in the stands nowadays, there are usually a handful of Ogie oglers trying their best to sport a similar 'do.
The fans love it, his teammates have had a field day with it and his hometown folk are embracing his look, even hoping to profit from it.
"My parents came into town yesterday and the kids at the high school want to cut my hair for cancer up in Fort Saskatchewan, so I think that's what I'm going to do at the end of the season," said Commodore.
"I can't make it through summer. I've tried before. It's too hot. I can't even go outside without sweating."
Commodore has long treated his hair like a vegetable garden.
While in the New York Devils organization, notoriously straight-laced GM Lou Lamoriello sat him down the first day they met.
"The first time I got called up ... (he) said: 'You know what you're going to do before you step on the ice? You're going to the barber and you're going to shave or you're never going to play for the New Jersey Devils.' So I went right to the barbershop."

I don't really care which side you're "cheering" for, skating up to a goalie and bashing the back of his head into the crossbar with the score 4-2, nobody around you, the puck nowhere near, and only a few seconds left... the only difference between what Nieminen did and what Bertuzzi did is that Cuju didn't happen to get seriously injured as a result (but it could have been sever, from a concussion to serious injury).
He should be suspended for the rest of the playoffs without question. It's ludicrous. There is room for a lot of things in hockey, but cheap shots to the head are not one of them.
(Go wings, I love Gelinas but after this cheap shot my loyalty is no longer divided at all).

Here's the clip. It was CLEARLY a cheap shot, and Nieminen should be suspended, particularly since in these playoffs blowing on the goalie gets you 2 minutes in the box, so elbowing should certainly get you a suspension. However, it looks like Nieminen was aiming for around the head area, but more towards the shoulder as well. But "bashing the back of his head into the crossbar" seems a bit harsh...Joseph's head doesn't appear to have hit the crossbar at all though, and Joseph had a chuckle about it in the postgame interview. I don't see a comparison between what Bertuzzi did. It was just a very cheap shot with no intent to injure. When you come up behind someone and hit them in the back of the head as hard as you can you are obviously trying to injure them. Nieminen should be suspended though, for the hit and to ensure this series doesn't turn into a bloodbath. It was getting very dirty on both sides down the stretch with some pretty vicious checks from behind by both Flames and Wings players. Early in either game three or four, I think it was Maltby who got right in front of Kiprusoff, came to a stop, and made sure to get as much ice as possible up into his face. Gelinas probably didn't appreciate the hit from behind after he scored his goal either. It all kept boiling up and unfortunately it ended with Nieminen hitting Joseph.
The Calgary Sun actually ran an article today entitled: Nieminen sending message
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/CalgarySun/Sports/2004/04/30/441706.html
which looks to be a little poor in taste. Iginla fighting Hatcher at the end of game 2 is one thing in an effort to motivate your team, but laying out a cheap shot on the opposing teams' goalie is another and clearly something that shouldn't be done.
Game four was good and the series should only get better. But after watching the wide open Lightning/Montreal series and looking at the style of some of the other teams left in the playoffs I have to say that I prefer any style of trap or wide open (prefer wide open play though) to the Red Wings left wing lock with a lead. They are worse to watch than the Devils with a lead to me. Ugh. It would seem to me that if they would use their skill to their fullest ability and play like the Lightning they would really blow out their opponents and make it exciting at the same time but whatever.

Jarome isn't a thug. That's why he's captain. Fighting Hatcher was employed as motivator and it worked. You'd never see him taking a cheap shot at anyone like Nieminen did. That was just crass.

It was just a very cheap shot with no intent to injure.
The only "very cheap shot" I can imagine that is NOT an attempt to injure would be spitting or something. How can you NOT want to hurt your opponent when you are catching them off guard and throwing an elbow around? I just don't get that.
If the NHL really wants to cut down on injury, they absolutely must take actions against this type of behavior. What if he did hit him in such a way that he hit his head on the cross bar and suffered a concussion? I just don't think players when they cross the line into "cheap shot" mode can defend it with "but they didn't get hurt" or "I didn't mean it".
Suppose Moore at the last second was able to duck just enough and be spared the full force of Bertuzzi's hit, didn't black out, and didn't go face first into the ice? Would we all just say it was a "very cheap shot" and suspend Bertuzzi for 5 games and move on? Would Bertuzzi's actions have been at all different? No, but there would be no headlines and no season ending suspension.
 To me, that's where the double talk occurs.

Unfortunately, it looks like the league is afraid to do anything unless it garners national attention in an obvious attempt to save face. Sportscasters and newswriters all over were talking about how the NHL is out of control and that this kind of stuff is tolerated. Bertuzzi was given a lengthy suspension because of that and people seemed to quiet down about the NHL and it didn't get much national attention except for various writers referring to it as the No Hope League in reference to no hockey next year. After the Bertuzzi incident, it doesn't look like anything has changed though. Boughner's hit and behavior throughout was obscene in the San Jose series but he didn't get any suspension at all and ended up playing a small role in Sakic's game four OT winner. Earlier in the year Boughner got hit by San Jose's Thornton in a similar manner but he wasn't suspended either. In both cases, the player should have been given a suspension. Since all this is being let go, the players just seem to keep at it. The only thing the NHL has cracked down on is goaltender interference which is completely ridiculous in many of the cases it has been called. It seemed to come shortly after Cloutier's injury which ironically, had nothing to do with goaltender interference of any kind. In a few of the games, players that have been called for marginal and stupid goaltender interference penalties have gone and taken another, more real run at the goalie later in the game. See Forsberg. Of course, he's more partial to punching goalies in the nuts though. What a moron.
That didn't seem to be the case with Niemenen, he was just a complete idiot. He should be suspended since stuff like that has no place in the game, and the NHL should start cracking down on garbage like that.

I agree that one game was enough for Nieminen. It was a stupid, a**hole, classless thing to do and I am very disappointed in him....but it wasn't nearly as bad as some other things I've seen in these playoffs. And, I think Cujo played it up quite a bit. He wasn't hurt so bad that he didn't have time to take a look and make sure no Flames were in shooting position before he started flailing in pain. I agree there is a double standard when they freak out over things only when someone is seriously injured....but I don't see many other alternatives that don't change the game more than I'm willing to.

today, they seemed to be having trouble seeing clearly too. once a player was hit with a stick (and I thought it was clear as a bell), but they went on about how it could have been a skate and how lucky he was. on another play the puck had clearly crossed the line and would be whistled for icing and Thorne (I think) said, oh it won't be icing......oh yes it was.
you're absolutely right, they do talk down to people. and it's not the kind of thing you can write off to giving information for people who may not be familiar with the game. it gives the impression they think all viewers are stupid and unable to follow normal conversation

Yzerman hit in the face with a puck
Associated Press
5/1/2004
DETROIT (AP) - Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman was hit in the face by a puck midway through the second period Saturday and needed help getting off the ice.
``He went to the hospital,'' Detroit coach Dave Lewis said. ``They're going to X-ray and take a look at the facial area where he got hit.''
A shot by Red Wings defenceman Mathieu Schneider ricocheted off a player in front of the Calgary net and hit Yzerman squarely in the face as he stood to the left of the net. The injury forced him out for the remainder of the second-round playoff game.
Yzerman, who doesn't wear a face shield, immediately dropped to the ice. He kicked his legs in pain as he was sprawled out.
After being down for a couple minutes, with the crowd watching in stunned silence, Yzerman was helped to the dressing room as a towel was held near his left eye.
The Red Wings fell behind 1-0 shortly after Yzerman was injured. The best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series was tied 2-2 entering Saturday's Game 5.

(sighs) I did not get to see this game because of my going to visit my grandmother, but I just may have to take back my comment about Thorne and Clement easily being the best hockey announcers at ESPN. Give ANYONE long enough there, and they will become the most biased and baseless announcers on the planet. In college hoops, it's Dook and Kentucky. In college football, it's Miami. In the NFL, it's Green Bay and a team du season. (Me thinks that team next season will be the Giants, now that they have Eli Manning. ) In the NBA, it's LeBron James...and I don't have to watch a lick of the said league to know that.
Anyway, to get back on-topic, yay Calgary! :spin: And sorry to hear and see what happened to Stevie Y...ouch indeed.

I am so happy that I watched the CBC feed, instead of having to listen to Thorne, Clement, and Davidson's idiotic comments. Besides being completely biased, they seem to talk down to the viewers. It just really pisses me off.
Those three get worse and worse.
(sighs) I did not get to see this game because of my going to visit my grandmother, but I just may have to take back my comment about Thorne and Clement easily being the best hockey announcers at ESPN. Give ANYONE long enough there, and they will become the most biased and baseless announcers on the planet. WOW
I dont know who else is pulling for Calgary but shnikes... what a game today. How nice would it be to see Detroit eliminated by a Cinderella?
This team has speed, grit, goaltending, great coaching and above all HEART. I really love watching this club play. Calgary blocked shots left and right and clogged up the passing lanes... Kippy was a phenom and Gelinas had the defence on their heels all game.
He was a bigger loss to the Canes than we realize.

a blurb from Mitch Albom's Saturday column about the hit on Cujo. guess he overestimated his Wings.
As for Joseph? Well. He was positively Gandhi after that play. He didn't swing. He didn't chase. He even said, when asked about it, "It's part of the game."
Yes, Ville, and today your team will find out how much. You made Joseph a target. But you also gave a target to the Wings. It's everyone with a Calgary jersey. And they're likely to attract a lot more than a casual elbow.

some Detroit writers watched the same game as the rest of us
And there can be no excuses now. Even before Yzerman went down, the Wings looked like a team assuming it would win, against a team desperate to win.
if Schneider is correct, it's certainly good news.
“The way he went down, it was pretty scary,” Schneider said. “He had a few encouraging words for us before he left. Fortunately, it looks like it isn’t going to affect his vision. He’s one of the greatest leaders ever to play this game, and he’ll be missed. But I’m confident we’ll be able to pick up the slack.”

They expect a full recovery but no return for this years playoffs. He had surgery last night to repair multiple fractures to his orbital bone. He has a scratched cornea, but his blurred vision improved after the surgery. I dont know whether to be severely bummed or relieved. Both, actually. He stayed on last night until the second intermission and gave the Wings a speech before heading over to the hospital. That says the most about him. Cracked in half and still giving everybody what-for.

As much as I hate Detroit, this guy is what hockey is all about. A true team player, and one of the best. It's a shame that Detroit has to lose him because of something like this...he is their heart and soul. For the rest of the series and playoffs Detroit won't be the same team.
But it's fantastic news that his vision shouldn't be harmed. Eye injuries are especially brutal.
This is just one more in a long line of face-injuries. This is why the NHL needs to make the half-shield mandatory.

Stevie Y is surely one of the best in a dying breed of old time hockey players. It positively sucks that his career is closing this way. Although, come to think of it, how appropriate that he would go out rallying the troops in a most heroic fashion. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Yzerman is out indefinitely
By John Niyo / The Detroit News
DETROIT -- Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman underwent 4 1/2 hours of surgery to repair multiple fractures in the orbital bone around his left eye Saturday night at Henry Ford Hospital.
Afterward, one of the first questions he had for his doctors was if he'd be able to make the trip with his teammates to Calgary for tonight's Game 6 of a Western Conference semifinal series. When told he couldn't for medical reasons, Yzerman was disappointed.
"That just goes to show you what he's all about," the Wings' Darren McCarty said. "We'll have to bring Game 7 home so he can watch it Wednesday."
Facing playoff elimination, the Wings' resolve was tempered only by their relief Sunday, thanks to the news that Yzerman, badly injured when hit in the face by a puck midway through Saturday's Game 5, was recovering well after surgery.
Yzerman was released from the hospital Sunday and, with his left eye bruised and swollen, even paid his teammates a visit at Joe Louis Arena before they departed for the airport.
Yzerman also suffered a scratched cornea and had blurred vision in his eye, but that condition was improving following surgery.
This type of injury generally requires at least a month of recovery time, but Wings officials are saying only that Yzerman is out of the lineup indefinitely. Still, some of his teammates talked hopefully about the possibility of him returning later in the playoffs, perhaps even in the next round if the Wings can advance.
"He's a warrior, and he'll be back to play again," said Mathieu Schneider, whose slap shot hit Yzerman on the freakish deflection Saturday. "We've just got to keep going long enough to get him back."

I had almost the EXACT injury Stevie Y took. 3 breaks in the ole Orbital bone for me.
he'll be fine, no doubt. that's what that bone is there for. luckily, that's where the puck hit.
but he won't be playing again this year.
hopefully he'll be around next year and doesn't end his career on a bad break like that.

I've never broken any facial bones, but I've had scratched corneas on two different occassions--- hurts like hell! Feels like someone's poking you with shards of glass. Good news is, though, that it heals really quickly and doesn't leave a scar.

I gotta say, the media is bugging the hell out of me on this. "Stevie Y's Horrific Injury." "Will the Wings be able to overcome this horrible blow." "Battling through adversity." Give me a freakin' break. Calgary has been without top d-men AND top forwards this whole series and no one is bleeding all over them. Stevie Y is fine. There were much worse injuries this season with much less mass freaking-out but the media. I guess they only care when it's one of ESPN's darlings.

I know the Wings will have a "win one for the Gipper" attitude, but I don't think Calgary will let it go back to Detroit... they have it in the palm of their hands.. and they better finish it.. Go Marty and Co!! ;)

He was a bigger loss to the Canes than we realize.
I said it all along: I was devestated to see him go. During the 'run' he was generally the first guy on the ice for practice, chattering, talking, just a great guy to have on the team and in the locker room. Don't get me wrong, he's right now playing the best hockey I've ever seen him play! But he's one of the character, worker guys you have to love on your team.

This game is very frustrating. Maltby is a terrible cheater. He was tapped on the back, and in seeing that the Flames were about to score absolutely LAUNCHED himself at the goal. Ridiculous. He certainly got what he wanted though, as there was no goal and the Flames got another fruitless powerplay. Hatcher's elbow up high was vicious and just plain stupid not to be called.

Panger just read the freakin' rule on that and it sure sounds to me like that goal should have stood. What a bunch of crap.
1. Did Iginla push Maltby at all towards the crossbar? Yes.
2. Which would be the more controversial call, letting the goal stand after a player is pushed towards the crossbar, or doing it by the book and calling the delay of game penalty and no goal?
3. Maltby being a diver is being recognized. Eventually he'll make a dive and either (a) be called for unsportsmanlike conduct or (b) put himself out of a key play.
Seriously though... the refs made the right call. As much frustration as you might feel in thinking that the rule book should award the goal, the truth is that Iginla had not yet received possession of the puck, let alone taken the shot -- once the shot had been launched, had Maltby lifted the net off the moorings, it would be a goal. The goal was not "iminent" because at that time, the puck was still behind the net, yet to be passed in front!
The goal can only be awarded if the goal was iminent -- meaning the shot had been fired. Iginla clearly doesn't even have possession of the puck yet when the net is off the moorings.
It is the correct call without a question of doubt.
Now, the Hatcher hit, that has a chance to be a suspension... although since no match penalty was called, and the puck was somewhat in the play (considering what else is being let go in this game!) I would not be surprised at all if there wasn't a suspension. It was a dirty play, in a game and series which is becoming verloaded with dirty plays. Wings are getting boarded left and right, Flames are getting elbowed and slashed. The refs are letting it go right now, because they've let too much go already to turn back now.
Get ready for perhaps the bloodiest 3rd period of hockey you've ever seen?

You seem to be the only person who thinks so "without a question of a doubt"....including everyone I've seen discuss it on ESPN. I guess they need you in Toronto.
Even if the rules were clear that it should have been no goal the fact of the matter is Maltby CHEATED to avoid a goal. He clearly, purposely knocked the net off the moorings. If you think that's an acceptable game plan then we'll certainly have to agree to disagree. But, gee, thanks for the education. ;)

Even if the rules were clear that it should have been no goal the fact of the matter is Maltby CHEATED to avoid a goal. He clearly, purposely knocked the net off the moorings. If you think that's an acceptable game plan then we'll certainly have to agree to disagree. But, gee, thanks for the education. ;)

What really got me was that he was arguing afterwards appearing to say he was pushed into the crossbar. What a joke. He absolutely threw himself at the net after being touched.
But this is one heck of a game. End to end action and tied at 0 going into OT.

goodness! so everytime a penalty is committed, it's cheating? it was an incredibly heads-up play by a veteran player, who traded a probable goal for a penalty. every time somebody hooks a guy in front of the net to prevent him getting an easy goal, it's cheating?
no.
cheating is doing performance enhancing drugs. it is not committing a foul (soccer or basketball) or a penalty (hockey or lacrosse).
acceptable game plan? the dude made an incredible, heads-up play. there's a reason there is a penalty in the rule book for it! just like hooking, holding, cross-checking, and all the rest.
also I believe this is the first time somebody accused me of being needed in Toronto... I feel... dirty!
PS: I'll be happy if either of these teams wins the Cup (Calgary and Detroit), and I'll continue calling things as I see 'em whatever names I get called in return (except a Leafs fan... man... I don't know how I'd take that...)

 I don't think I called you any names.
And, I'll continue to call them as I see them as well. In this case, cheat to win was Maltby's theme, IMO (as I mentioned before but I notice you never did....all absolute truths in your posts...hence the need for you in TO). Like I said, agree to disagree.

You haven't, and nobody else on this board, but sometimes just trying to cheer your team gets you in trouble other places (especially the old sportsnet.ca boards! good lord!) You did say maybe they needed me in Toronto. I think I mistook your telling me maybe the NHL needed me to explain why the refs want Detroit to win for calling me a Leafs fan.
PS: Still don't think it's anything close to cheating! examples of cheating are taking steiroids, stealing skates from the opposing teams, making your visiting bench a bit shorter than your home bench (like Detroit does), using illegal sticks or goalie pads (although there are penalties for them, they are more long-term cheating which can result in a penalty), going by and cracking all the sticks on the opposing team's bench, etc. Not "embellishing a cross-check and jumping into the crossbar"!

Toronto is where the League's refs are based. It's where all the video review of the games goes on. It's where the rules are interpreted and all the goals are allowed or disallowed. That comment had nothing to do with the Leafs.
DUDE! I said, agree to disagree!! Is that OK with you?
