Ward wins WHL's top honours

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Red Deer Rebels goaltender Cam Ward has done everything he can to get the Carolina Hurricanes to sign him to a contract.

The 20-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., won both the player-of-the-year award and top goaltender honours at the Western Hockey League's award ceremony in Calgary on Wednesday.

"I think it's great to get recognized like that," Ward said from Calgary. "At the same time a lot of credit goes to your teammates because any goaltender will tell you, you can't do it without your teammates. They've been tremendous this season and I owe a lot to them."

Ward was a first-round pick, 25th overall, by the Hurricanes at the 2002 NHL draft. The Hurricanes have to sign him by June 1 or one of the premiere goaltenders in major junior hockey the past three seasons will go back into the NHL draft.

"We're trying to get that taken care of," Ward said. "All I can do is worry about how I perform on the ice and how I conduct myself off the ice and whatever happens, happens."

"But we're confident that something will get done."

Ward earned both the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy, which goes to the league's top player, as well as the Del Wilson Trophy for best goaltender.

Ward beat out Kelowna Rockets goaltender Kelly Guard, who was a finalist for both awards.

The last player to win both player-of-the-year and goaltending awards was Cory Rudkowsky of the Seattle Thunderbirds in 1999.

Ward, a six-foot, 176-pound netminder, had a 31-16-8 record, four shutouts, a 2.05 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

The Rebels reached the Eastern Conference final in the playoffs before they were eliminated in six games by the Medicine Hat Tigers. Ward had three shutouts, a 1.85 GAA and a .945 save percentage in the post-season.

"It's fair to say this was my best year in the WHL and it comes at a time where, hopefully, you can get rewarded," Ward said. "But that's out of my own hands. I've done what I can and hopefully will get rewarded for it."

Ward won the goaltending award for the second time after getting the nod in 2002. He has been invited to the Canadian junior hockey team's selection camp the past two years.

Ward was also runner-up for this year's humanitarian award.

"I like to say that this year I was a better goaltender than I was two years ago," Ward said. "You always try to continue to develop as a goaltender and as a person. You're never satisfied with just being good. You want to keep getting better year after year."

Ward will be the WHL's nominee for the Canadian Hockey League's player of the year and goaltender of the year awards. The winners will be announced May 19 during the Memorial Cup in Kelowna, B.C.

Gilbert Brule of the Vancouver Giants was chosen the WHL's top rookie. Brule, a North Vancouver native who turned 17 in January, had 25 goals, 35 assists and 100 penalty minutes in 67 games for the Giants.

Dion Phaneuf of the Red Deer Rebels was named top defenceman. Phaneuf, a 19-year-old from Edmonton, had 19 goals, 24 assists and 126 penalty minutes in 62 games for the Rebels. The six-foot-three, 205-pound blue-liner was a first-round draft pick by the Calgary Flames last year and is considered a top NHL prospect.

The coach-of-the-year award went to Kevin Constantine of the Everett Silvertips. The expansion Silvertips won the U.S. Division with a 35-27-8-2 record under Constantine, a former NHL coach, and have advanced to the WHL final against Medicine Hat.

Calgary Hitmen general manager Kelly Kisio picked up the award for top executive. Kootenay Ice forward Nigel Dawes won the most sportsmanlike player award.

Kamloops Blazers goaltender Devan Dubnyk was the WHL's scholastic player of the year. The Portland Winter Hawks were named the scholastic team of the year.

Rob Matsuoka of Calgary was chosen the league's top official.

At the Memorial Cup tonight it was announced that Cam Ward was named Canadian Hockey League Goaltender of the Year. Another great accomplishment for Ward. I cannot wait to see him in a Canes uniform. He is going to be something very special that Cane fans have been waiting for. I cannot think of a hotter prospect coming out of junior hockey right now than Ward.

More on Cam:

WARD AWARDS: Cam Ward, the Canes' first-round draft pick in 2002, was named the goaltender of the year in Canada's junior leagues Wednesday but lost out for MVP honors to 16-year-old Quebec league phenom Sidney Crosby. Ward won both awards in the Western Hockey League playing for the Red Deer Rebels.

Ward, 20, signed with the Canes last week and is expected to start next season in Lowell (AHL). He went 31-16-8 with a 2.05 goals-against average.

Crosby, the consensus top player for the 2005 NHL draft, won both MVP and rookie of the year.

Carolina goalie prospect Kevin Nastiuk, who outdueled Ward in the WHL semifinals, was named the No. 1 star in Medicine Hat's 2-1 win over Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League on Tuesday at the Memorial Cup, Canada's four-team, round-robin junior hockey championship. The championship game is Sunday in Kelowna, British Columbia.
