This is only for ratings/viewers.... not your own opinions on who should or will win, but who will create the largest audience?

Tough call.
Philly and San Jose simply because of the large US cities. But I guess all of Canada will tune out if Calgary doesn't make it?
Oh wait, they'll still watch their Canadian players, so I stick with my vote. I happened to read a thread somewhere today that had the Leaf fans getting Primeau in blue/white because, you know, he's a "Toronto boy". God, they slay me. Whew - way OT. Sorry.

I would say either Philly/TB vs. Calgary. Sort of an Us against Them mentality. That always fuels ratings. Philly has a wide and rabid fan base, but many might tune in to see if the noobs from Florida will make it all the way.

I'm thinking the Flyers vs. the Flames.
The Flames will pull in most of Canada...it's been quite a long time since a Canadian team has won the cup. The Flyers will pull in all of those Philly fans across the country. Aside from Calgary it's the biggest 'hockey-market' in the playoffs...and has plenty of fans across the country. Tampa and San Jose just won't pick up as many viewers...
Flyers vs. Flames would be one of the better matchups as far as ratings go. T'would be good for the NHL to get all of those viewers...

Sort of an Us against Them mentality.
I'm going to stay away from THAT and vote Calgary vs. Philly for the sense of ratings only. Both markets have fan bases that go back further than the other 2 franchises. Calgary hasn't been this far in the playoffs since 1989, and the Flyers haven't been since their last SCF run. There is a renewed love for the Flames in Cowtown and the Flyers haven't had this good of a team in a long time, so seeing them both in the Finals would go a long way to re-establish the NHL in established markets.
On the other hand, San Jose and Tampa are newer markets, so SCF berths for them would be definite boons for them as far as boosting fanbase and viewership (ie: advancing the NHL's exposure). But, with the Sharks being in the West where they have been all but forgotten all through their unbelievable season this year. Couple that with TV execs being hellbent on broadcasting on weekend afternoons, and burying NHL games on ESPN2 in between the World Series of Poker and karate, would it really boost ratings? I think not.

What for? It's not like that's what I'M thinking. Tommy asked for objective, cold-eyed RATINGS ploys. That's all I was positing. The only other way to make an international hockey rivalry more marketable is to give the men BREASTS.

LOL, but what would the uniforms look like? RIO, you really are too much :D.

I just think there's too much them vs. us nowadays, and I was hoping to avoid it, that's all. I explained my pick and why I picked it. Take it for what you will. It doesn't matter really. Ultimately, the teams are going to decide this one.

Lift and seperate. Very important. :smoke:

Let's hope they do avoid it. I find it deeply annoying.

I voted Philly/San Jose, but if I could, I would change it to Philly/Calgary. Both franchises have HUGE fanbases, as already mentioned. And also, more Canadian teams racing for the Cup in this season's playoffs have made for better ratings. So a Canadian team in the Finals certainly wouldn't hurt...

I said Flyers v. Sharks. I figure the Canadian viewers are a lock. I mean, it's their national sport! Do they stop watching just because their teams are out? I wouldn't think so. Add to those given Canadians all the Flyers fans, Canes fans who follow all our x-players in the orange and black (or who are just checking out future trade prospects ;) ), AND throw in California and anyone who hates the Avalanche or the Blues or who just happened to develop a liking for the Sharks somewhere along the way and you've got a decent bit o' ratings there, IMO.

I voted for Calgary and the Bolts.. even thought I hate TB and don't want them anywhere near the Cup.. I know Calgary is considered an underdog and even though TB got over 100 points, they have come from nowhere to being a really good team and I think there would be a lot of interest in two "underdogs".. but I want Philly to kick their arses.. :D

Kind of reminds you of a hardworking team that made its way to the SCF in 2002, doesn't it? ;)

the Flyers haven't been since their last SCF run. the Flyers haven't had this good of a team in a long time, so seeing them both in the Finals would go a long way to re-establish the NHL in established markets.
just going to add a little flyer corrections here :)
Last SCF appearance was 97.. so it hasn't been brutally long. Last ECF game was in 2000. Lost a heartbreaker to the devils in 7.
I wouldn't say it's been a long time since we had a team this good. We normally have a fairly solid team, granted they seem to fall short most years. If the D gets healthy, yes, best team in a while.
And I agree with you completely on two established teams getting to go helping the NHL a great deal. It's almost a must.
The SCF in new markets is a Huge boon to their economy, and fanbase. However, as we've seen here... it is brutally short, if the team can't continue to compete. a long road in the playoffs.... and even to the SCF, raises expectations TOO high. Most "newer" fans really don't understand how impossible making the SCF is (no offense folks. simple truth). I think it's great to see new blood. But at this time in NHL history, there is a massive need for established teams to rebuild some faith in this sport.
A San Jose vs Tampa Bay won't do nearly as much good as Calgary vs Philly, imvho.
