BUFFALO -- A junior forward on the Canisius men's basketball team collapsed during a workout today and later died at the hospital.

The college reports that 21-year-old Richard Jones of Boston was about 20 minutes into a workout around 3:15 this afternoon when he fell to the floor during a shooting drill.

Head coach Mike MacDonald, assistant coach Michael Wernicki and several teammates were with him.

Jones was unconscious but had a pulse. Canisius athletic trainers administered CPR and used an automatic defibrillator when his pulse was lost.

Athletic director Timothy Dillon said he didn't have any details on the cause of death.

"All of our athletes all go through a rigorous physical, and we would never have a student athlete participating if we knew there was a problem," he said.

Jones played in 88 career games and made 47 starts for the Griffs as a three-year letterwinner. The 6-foot-6 forward averaged 5.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while dishing out 142 career assists.

Plans for memorial services in the Canisius campus are incomplete.

That's really sad, it's so sudden that he just kinda collapsed. I hope they are able to find out what happened and maybe bring some closure to the community.

I have been going to sporting events my whole life and that is my biggest fear...to witness something like this..

The worst thing I have seen at an event was Weekesy's seizure..

How sad for his family and his school..
