Press Release
Calgary - The Western Hockey League Player of the Week is goaltender Cam Ward of the Red Deer Rebels. Ward earned player of the week honours by recording two wins, including a shutout in two games versus the Medicine Hat Tigers as the Rebels grabbed a two games to none lead in the best-of-seven WHL Eastern Conference Semi-Finals of the 2003 WHL Playoffs. Ward recorded a 1.00 goals against average and a 0.959 save percentage.
On Friday, April 4th, Ward recorded 25 saves in a 6-2 win in Game 1 of the best-of-seven WHL Western Conference Semi-Finals.
On Saturday, April 5th, Ward turned aside all 22 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout home victory in Game 2 of the series.
Games 3 and 4 are in Medicine Hat on Tuesday, April 8th and Wednesday, April 9th.
Ward, an 18-year-old from Edmonton, Alberta, was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1st round, 25th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

This is why we should get draft Horton or Zhernik instead of Fleury.

I feel pretty darned good about the goaltending prospects in the organization. Zepp, Boisclair, Ward... i just don't have any confidence in out coaching staff's goaltender management.
All things considered, though, while Fleury probably wouldn't be my first choice in the draft, you can never have too many solid goaltenders in the system... if for no other reason than the trade potential.
But keep in mind also that (unless i'm mistaken) Ward is still unsigned, and until he signs, he means nothing towards the Canes' future.

Speaking of the Red Deer Rebels, the third game in their second round series is tonight. You can listen to it live on www.reddeerrebels.com
Judging from the comments by coaches and players on that site, Ward is an EXCELLENT goalie.

Is there some reason to believe he won't be signed? The Canes have 2 years to sign him, no?
Does anyone recall Ward's plans after this year. For some reason I was thinking he was planning just 1 more year in the WHL after the draft.

No, no... i'm sure he'll sign. I'm just not going to consider it a given yet. Remember, the reason the Canes were able to draft Zepp and Zigomanis was because they re-entered the draft after not signing with their original draft teams.

I'm glad we drafted Staal! What a blast from the past thread... Who knew?

I'm glad we didn't draft Fleury.
It worked out pretty well in the end, anyway.

Where the heck did this thread come from eh?
What a friggin blast from the past. I can remember the many debates back then on who we should pick and I seem to recall the concensus was JR was gonna try and draft Fleury, and I'll I can remember was lord we don't need another goalie, get that kid from the sod farm.
I totally remember on the way to Nashville on draft weekend, reading THN prospect guide to hub while we were driving over and saying to him, "if he tries to get Fleury, I'm gonna scream".
Totally worked out for us. No regrets, at all. Just take a look at that 03 class though, there were some good players taken in that first round. Deep, deep draft.
