Gregson, Stewart fail to make the playoffs
By ERIC DUHATSCHEK

Terry Gregson, the National Hockey League's third-most experienced referee, and Paul Stewart, who worked his 1,000th game this season, were among 11 referees who failed to make the cut for the playoffs.

In addition, three referees who worked the first round a year ago -- Mark Faucette, Mike Hasenfratz and Shane Heyer -- will not get any playoff games this season. Instead, they will be replaced by Eric Furlatt, Chris Rooney and Kelly Sutherland.

Furlatt, Rooney and Sutherland went into the 2002-03 season having worked only 30, 53 and 67 NHL games, respectively. This will be their first postseason action.

Among the 16 linesmen who won't see playoff action are Gerard Gauthier, the 32-year veteran who is retiring this season, and Randy Mitton, one of only three active linesmen to work more than 2,000 games.

Andy VanHellemond, the NHL's director of officiating, said playoff officiating assignments were handed out on the basis of how referees and linesmen were graded over the course of the regular season by seven league-appointed supervisors.

Asked how how he would pair his referees in the opening round, VanHellemond said, "I have a couple of groups, where there's a young guy working with an older guy and a couple of others -- like Don Van Massenhoven and Dan O'Halloran -- who've both been around a few years. As the games go along, I'll ultimately try to put the Bill McCrearys with the Dan Marouellis and the Steve Walkoms with the Paul Devorskis.

"I'm flexible. The young guys will start out with the senior guys the first couple of games, then it'll vary afterwards."

VanHellemond and Colin Campbell, the NHL's senior vice-president of hockey operations, brought together all the referees and linesmen who will work the playoffs to Toronto on Monday for a quick review. The overriding message was to stay the course on obstruction.

In recent months, players have suggested that the league's heavily publicized obstruction crackdown started to fall off after Christmas.

Admitting that it was more difficult to implement it than the slashing initiative of a few years ago, Campbell said, "There were nights in the 1,230 games we watched that we didn't like how it was called. We can make it better. . . . We knew it would be on an ongoing project and it's something we're going to go after again this summer and tighten up.

"For the most part, I'm pretty satisfied with the way the players adapted."

Campbell pointed out that the players didn't help matters by trying to embellish possible infractions as the season progressed. Ultimately, the league introduced a midseason crackdown on diving, as players tried to take advantage of the stricter officiating standard.

"This [diving] hurt our endeavour to clamp down on hooking, holding and interference," Campbell said. "Players were good at embellishing those acts, so it hurt our efforts to assess it. It's easy to see on video, but it's difficult for the referee to call.

"We stressed today that we're going to keep the same standard that we finished the season off at, in the playoffs."

Last spring, a handful of general managers -- the New York Islanders' Mike Milbury, the Toronto Maple Leafs' Pat Quinn and the Vancouver Canucks' Brian Burke -- were critical of the refereeing in the opening round.

In yesterday's conference call with GMs and coaches, commissioner Gary Bettman addressed that issue and suggested the league would have little tolerance for what it sees as an act of gamesmanship by some GMs.

"We don't want to penalize the organizations who just play the game on the ice and don't try to win the game off the ice," Campbell said.

"Gary was adamant about the fines and the swiftness with which he's going to hand out those fines when we do have managers and coaches step out of line. Other than those three instances, the rest of the playoffs were pretty good last year, but it only takes a couple of situations like that to mar the whole picture."

Playoffs teams often attempt more line matching and stalling, something that could be at odds with the hurry-up faceoff rule, which dropped the average length of a game to 2 hours 20 minutes, from 2:33 a year ago. Campbell said the league would keep the quick-faceoff initiative -- one of the NHL's most well-received innovations -- going throughout the playoffs.

Mona! I didn't notice you sitting in front of me! ;) When Joe, Ronnie, and Bruno (I think) were all in the box at the same time Sunday I was really thinking (and screaming about it) they were gonna turn it into another Tampa Bay 7 guys in the box fiasco. And I just KNEW they were gonna forget to let Joe out! Turned out not to be that bad....but with Hans n' Frans I'm always worried.

Did anyone else notice the choice of music while all that penalty stuff was getting sorted out? It was Genesis' "Land of Confusion"?

"Too many men, too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Can't you see this is the land of confusion"
