It is depressing!

We all knew it was coming, but it's reality smacking us upside the head. Harder to take when it's in black and white:

The math works like this: The Hurricanes have 60 points and 22 wins with nine games to play, giving them a maximum of 78 points and 31 wins. The Islanders, holding down the last playoff spot in the East, have 75 points and 32 wins.

Even if the Hurricanes win all nine remaining games, as long as the Islanders get three points out of their final 10 games, the Hurricanes will finish ninth on a tiebreaker.

There's always next year, right?????!!!!

There's always next year, right?????!!!!

Methinks next year started with all of the callups, which have been extended auditions for the October and beyond.

Right now, I have to say that St. Jacques and Malec have earned regular spots. Bayda, probably. Hereema, maybe. I am @ work, and have forgotten some, please add your ideas...

Bayda, probably.

Actually, according to JR in either a recent interview or article (Perhaps you remember and/or have it on hand, Shell?) Bayda has deservedly earned a definite spot with the Canes next season. Besides Bayda, I also see Malec and St. Jacques having earned their spots too. Still am not too sure about the others...

It was yesterday's chat with JR on the buzz that he said Bayda would almost definitely be playing for us next year.

For you folks that think Bruno and Malec should "definitely" be here next year... I'm curious what you would do with the current D to make sure these kids had spots?

because you can't have 21 year olds sitting on the bench. their time is too valuable, it MUST be used to improve. if they're going to ride the bench up here, then they should be in Lowell playing hockey.

I personally think that they should trade Tanabe or Ward (preferably Tanabe) and have the D be Hedican, Hill, Wallin, St Jacques, Ward/Tanabe, and Malec. Even so, they could keep the current roster and still need one of the two to fill out the 6 D spots, or keep both and carry 7 D-men.

And don't forget we have all those other teams to leap frog... making the task even more improbable.

I'm curious what he odds might be for Wesley to return here next year(??) I know it probably depends on how the ride in Toronto goes, but haven't heard any strong signs one way or another (since the site was gone for a while... sure am glad it's back! :) ) Maybe JR wants to go with the less expensive youth now.

The last thing i want to see next year is the Canes carrying 7 d-men. One of two things would happen... one is that there would be a d-man sitting on the bench most of the game (and mark my words, it would end up being Malec, and the kid needs to PLAY!)... the other is the 7th d-man ends up playing as a wing. We've had a million injuries this year, which makes this not so bad, but when everyone is healthy, nobody will want to see Bayda/DeFauw/C.Adams/Boulerice sitting out as healthy scratches in order to allow Tanabe to play as a wing!

I'm scared to even speculate at this point.

I have the feeling Irbe will finally be traded this summer. Weekes will be the big guy. The backup... well, it depends on what the Canes get for Irbe. If they get draft picks/prospects (which i'd consider most likely), DesRochers will be the man. If JR could somehow trade Irbe for Turco, however... :eek2:

On D, i don't see much change. While having Wesley back would be ultra-cool, i don't think it'll happen. Hedican, Hill, Ward, Wallin... shoe-ins. Tanabe, Malec, St. Jacques... pick two. I personally hope Tanabe is the odd man out, but holding my breath i am not. I expect we won't be seeing as much of Bruno as i would like.

Up front... ack! With everyone healthy, it'll be ultra-tough for all the young guys to make the cut, no matter how much they deserve it. Francis, Brind'Amour, Vasicek, K. Adams... shoe-in centers, meaning Zigomanis will be back in Lowell.

A little toughter at the wing positions. O'Neill & Cole are givens, as is Vrbata. Beyond that? Who knows?!

Which leaves everyone else basically fighting for 5 spots, plus another guy who gets to watch every game from the press box. 5 spots to be divided between C. Adams, Bayda, Heerema, Kurka, Brendl, Svoboda, Hlavac, DeFauw, Surma, Druken, Boulerice, C-Mac, and Daniels, and i'm likely leaving someone out here.

C. Adams has done everything that has been asked of him and more, so he's likely in. Unless Hlavac is traded, you know he'll get a spot. Which leaves 3 spots.

The gut tells me Bayda and Heerema get two, and Daniels and Boulerice split the other, depending on the opponent. I'm no Mo, however, so what do i know?

Good analysis Mo. I'm with you on D, as much as I try to defend Tanabe (mostly because I think sometimes people take shots at him even during the few times he doesn't deserve it ;) ), I'd prefer to see Malec and St. Jacques next season.

Boulerice concerns me. Will he return to his pre-hit form - or can he? How many of the Canes have had the perfect opportunity to shine this year and have it yanked out due to injury: Weekes (twice), Hereema, Brendl (don't know if he was really gonna "shine" this season, but still), Boulerice... ugh.

Hurricanes' Cinderella slipper shatters
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, SUN MEDIA

RALEIGH, North Carolina -- The Carolina Hurricanes were the Cinderella story of the Stanley Cup playoffs last spring.

But the glass slipper did more than just crack this year.

It completely shattered.

As they lined up to face the Senators last night at the RBCCenter, the Canes stood on the verge of officially being eliminated from the playoffs - though that's been a foregone conclusion for weeks. It means a long summer ahead for a team that was supposed to be a contender again.

Instead of capitalizing their gutsy run to the Stanley Cup final last June, the Canes success turned out to be an albatross around the organization's neck.

"I wouldn't trade in what happened last year ... not in a second," said Canes coach Paul Maurice yesterday. "Yes, this has been a difficult season on everybody, but I'd gladly be willing to take that kind of challenge again."

Look around the Hurricanes dressing room and it's hard to recognize the faces. The most-often asked question: What happened? Why did a team with so much promise and hope fall off the map in such short order?

Maurice and Carolina GM Jim Rutherford search for those answers every day and they're not hard to find. Players who were playoff heroes hit a wall this season. The team has also been hit hard by injuries.

Goaltender Arturs Irbe couldn't repeat his magic of last spring and offensive stalwarts Jeff O'Neill, Rod Brind'Amour and Erick Cole couldn't find their touch around the net. The injury list reads like a who's who of the Carolina roster.

"The one thing we've always been, even in the years we've missed the playoffs by a couple of points or just gotten in, is a team that's been resilient. We've always been able to handle this kind of stuff," said Maurice.

"In early December, we were five games over .500 and it was looking like we were going to be OK. Then we started to see guys drop and we had guys who were struggling to score goals, but we were getting lots of opportunities.

"I'm not going to say it was bad luck because that would suggest that everything that happened last year was just good luck. After three years of being pretty fortunate not having injuries, we started suffering the catastrophic type with broken bones. There's nothing you can do."

Before they faced the Detroit Red Wings in last year's final, the Canes had already decided they were going to get younger. That process was accelerated by the injuries. Seven players have scored their first NHL goals with the club this season, which is a sure sign of youth.

Gone are the likes of wingers Sami Kapanen (Philly) and Bates Battaglia (Colorado), along with defencemen Glen Wesley (Toronto) and Marek Malik (Vancouver). Rutherford has already started retooling to get the Canes back on track.

"I guess the process we're going through right now is a bit of training camp in this last month," said Rutherford. "We're trying to see where everybody fits. It's disappointing after the success (last year), but we have to keep moving forward."

"We're looking at this as a chance to get younger," said Maurice.

Clearly, though, they're not the toast of the league anymore.

They're just toast.

Thanks for the article...

I guess Edmonton is wishing to deflect some of the pressure off their playoff chase for the last position, and trading two of their best players. Ahh...Canada!

Bruce Garrioch doesn't write for the Edmonton Sun. He writes for the Ottawa Sun--which shares articles with the Edmonton Sun, because they're owned by the same people.

(and could the ******* be any more patronizing? Seriously.)
