I decided to stay home sick today & now I think something was telling me to. I got to watch something spectacular live. If you haven't seen it, a statue of Saddam was torn down in the central square. Iraqi citizens jumped up & down on it cheering. It was one of the most moving things i've ever witnessed. It will be on the news tonight & it's on all news websites. Even Al-Jazeera & Abu Dhabi were covering it live!

Some American soldiers wrapped the statue's head in an American flag and then took that down, pretty quickly, and put up an Iraqi flag.

Thanks for posting that, and just to add since I saw it live, that American flag didn't stay up for more than 2 minutes! I think some soldier got a little overjoyed & then got quickly told to get it down. First they put an Iraq one around his neck to look like a scarf, then took it down. Guess they didn't want the image of the flag falling with Saddam's regime.

Maybe but I'd bet it's more likely that they want it to look as much like liberation (rather than conquest) as it can. We are not, after all, taking over the country...just ousting the leader.

great shots, thanks.

I think it's tough for these soldiers not to fly our flag. normally, when in war, you take over a site, you fly your flag. matter of habit or ingrained teaching more than anything I'd suppose.

commanding officers are doing a good job of making sure it comes down right away.

all in all.... helluva job today folks!!

i hope they will get saddam soon, but hmmmm i actually don't think he should die. they should put him into prison for the rest of his life. even when he's a very old man he should rest there and think about what he has done. that would be very good. a little room with nothing and only saddam for the rest of his life. that's the real hell

Amen. Death is not always the worst punishment...which is why I prefer solitary confinement for life over death for heinous crimes.

No I think he should be tortured and executed in the manner he did to ~2 million people. Then when the Devil's shoving a pineapple up his zhopa, that'll be the real hell. ;)
