PACIFIC™ ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR NHL DRAFT
Pacific Trading Cards will be hosting the fourth annual Pacific Hockey Card Show at the NHL Entry Draft.

This year’s show will take place Saturday and Sunday June 26-27 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, home of the Carolina Hurricanes. Pacific has created special game-used All-Star Game net cards specifically for the event, as well as a special parallel version of their Calder Reflections insert set from Calder Hockey.
Pacific is also giving fans a chance to have their picture on a digital hockey card, either by themselves or with Pacific NHL Draft spokeswomen Tracy Brooks from TNA Wrestling and Stephanie the zany sports lady from www.zanysportslady.com and the Tony Bruno Morning Extravaganza on Fox Sports Radio.

“It will be a great event for hockey fans and collectors,” said Pacific VP of Marketing Jeffrey Morris. “Fans get an opportunity to see and experience the draft from a great perspective, as well as the chance to meet more than a hundred of the NHL players of tomorrow. If you are an autograph collector, or a card collector, or just a hockey fan, it is a really fun weekend for everyone.”

Last year’s event drew 14,000 people to the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville. Pacific expects another strong turnout in Raleigh.

“It is a good event for Pacific and the trading card collecting industry because of the exposure we get – locally, nationally and internationally. Pacific’s logo will be on the draft stage and as the event is televised on ESPN in the United States, TSN in Canada and throughout Europe, hockey fans will see the Pacific logo as each player takes the stage. Card collecting is centered around rookies, and tying the rookies into trading cards on a national stage is great for us, and great for the industry.”

Pacific has elevated its wrapper redemption plans for the draft this year. The company has created three All-Star Game-Used net cards for the event, each with two players. The cards are numbered to 250 and feature the pairings of Rick Nash-Ilya Kovalchuk, Martin St. Louis-Joe Sakic and Martin Brodeur-Marty Turco.

The first 250 fans to buy boxes of Pacific hockey cards and open them at the Pacific corporate booth will receive one set of three All-Star Game-Used Net cards, as well as a set of Calder Reflections cards from Calder Hockey, numbered to 499. Both are available while supplies last.

Collectors can also get one random Calder Reflections card by purchasing three Pacific packs at the show.

For more information on the NHL Draft and how to attend, visit www.carolinahurricanes.com.

... but I couldn't buy any cards, because the card vendors weren't allowed to sell them during the draft (12-3). Since I only went from 11:30 to 1:30, even though I really wanted to buy several cards (still don't have a Staal for example) the tables were closed.

This really made me angry, since the Eye stores were all open, all the vending booths were open, I just don't understand why all the card booths had to be closed, and the booths were one of the main reasons I wanted to come to the draft!

Still it was sweet to see Ladd get drafted and applauded, to see the absolutely huge crowd, to see Gretzky, etc. Just wish I could have picked up some of the cards I was looking for!

That's what I was wondering, too. I paid less than that for a box with jersey cards in every pack. For $100 a pack, those cards must have pieces of Cup-winning pucks on them or something.

If anyone's really hard up for cash, the All-Star Net cards are going for $35+ a pop on eBay, and so far I've seen a Nash/Kovalchuk go for $67.

Honestly, even though I know how the card game goes, it makes me a little mad that special cards like these were obtained by people who just wanted to sell them while those that wanted to card as a memento might not get one, but in this case it looked like there were plenty of the net cards still available on the second day of the Draft, when not many people were hanging around.

The 100 dollar, pack of cards comes with a rookie card a jersey card and a auto card and a regular base card. The rookie cards have a chance of having a patch and auto numbered to 99. I bought a box (4 packs) and the best card I got was a Gretzky auto.

Sounds like those packs are 100 dollar lottery tickets. You may get something awesome like Lord stanley's signature worth thousands, or worthless cards. I did a search on ebay for pacific luxury suite cards and you'd be amazed at how little those cards are getting... sometimes only 50 cents and averaging 50-10 bucks on ebay. Eric staal's card has a piece of a game used puck and at the most is getting 50 bucks. (Nobody can even authenticate whether he even played in the game with the puck!)

The second day of the equipment sale Wally still had some practice used jerseys for a ben franklin. That's what I would buy, or a powerball ticket.

The final word from Pacific from their press release. It appears they were overall surprised how big the Raleigh market is for cards.

Crowd of 15,000 makes Pacific™ NHL Draft show best ever
Pacific Press Release

If there was ever any concern over hockey's upcoming labor issues, it certainly wasn't evident in Raleigh last week.

A crowd of 14,862 plus many agents, officials and players attended the 2004 NHL Entry Draft last Saturday, which featured the fourth annual Pacific™ NHL Hockey Card Show in the stadium concourse. According to Pacific™, it was the most successful NHL Draft promotion they have ever had.

"It was a very important show for us, especially given the climate of the hockey market right now," said Pacific™ VP of Marketing, Jeffrey Morris. "We didn't really know what to expect, and you have to think that a hockey show in Raleigh in June is a long shot. The first 20 minutes were slow, but then it was like the floodgates opened up and we were swamped right up until the first round of the draft started."

Morris said that collectors bought and redeemed over 200 hobby boxes of 2003-04 Pacific™ hockey product at the show in the first three hours alone, before the show continued following the first round and the following day. He also added that the dealers did very well, as the prices were not close out prices but very strong. Pacific™ produced 250 three-card sets featuring pieces of net from the 2004 NHL All-Star Game. The redemption cards helped drive sales.

"It was good to see a show like that in a market like Raleigh. We thought there was no way we could surpass the success of last year's event in Nashville, but we did. Fans got to meet a lot of players and get a lot of autographs for free. That's what makes the draft so special - most of the kids, after they are drafted, just hang around and are thrilled to meet fans and share the experience with them. It was a memorable weekend for everyone."

Pacific™ was also able to secure memorabilia at the draft, which is up for auction on eBay. Some items, such as autographed jerseys, are in the Pacific™ Treasury Collection store, while some other items are in the Beckett.com store.

In addition to the redemption, Pacific™ also gave fans the opportunity to have their pictures taken on cards and get autographs from Tracy Brooks of TNA Wrestling and noted radio personality Stephanie the Zany Sports Lady from www.zanysportslady.com. That site has a number of behind the scenes photos from the Pacific™ event in the June 29 portion of its weblog.

"It was a great weekend for the hobby," concluded Morris. "It was a true fanfest environment where fans got to experience the unique culture of hockey. Pacific™ got a lot of exposure on television around the world with our logo on the draft stage. The draft was televised in over 150 countries. It also gave us the opportunity to be with many fans who opened their first ever box of hockey cards at the show, and to promote our 2005 Pacific™ NHL Hockey card set which comes out in mid-July.

Next year's NHL Draft will be in Ottawa. "It will be an incredible event and we are already looking forward to it," said Morris. "It will be a can't miss event. Being from the Ottawa area, I know the fans there are already pumped up for it, especially since it is Sidney Crosby's draft year."

Andrew Ladd is now the most popular player in Carolina this weekend!

Photo ©2004 Bruce Bennett Studios
(Raleigh, NC) -Carolina Hurricanes’ fans are called “Caniacs” and they are very rabid fans. When commissioner Gary Bettman announced that they were moving up in the draft the sound that came from the arena was building. Bettman played it right and paused and said, “I think you are going to like this,” and then the noise was deafening.

Andrew Ladd was the recipient and the big winger probably never had so many cheers for him in his career to date. He will be a beloved player in this city when the time is right but that won’t be for another season or two as he still needs some seasoning before he makes the jump to the NHL.

“I was really excited,” said Ladd. That (Carolina) was one of the teams that I was excited about.”

The Pacific Trading Cards booth was rocking and they were going through a record number of redemptions on the first day! While Nashville was a good market it seems like Carolina has them beat. Maybe the picture-taking presence of TNA babe Tracy Brooks or the Zany Sports Lady helped that. The rain sure didn’t dampen any spirits.

There were fans of all cities and jersey styles that attended the first day of the draft. It was a well organized event and there was definitely a family atmosphere because of the carnival that was outside and the collectibles show on the concourse leading up to the arena.

I've been offered some good coin to part with the cards I got at the Draft, but I'm hanging on to them....... for now. Anyone else gotten any good offers?

I haven't gotten any offers, but I don't think anyone knows I have them.

ATTENTION WORLD! I HAVE ALL-STAR NET CARDS FROM THE NHL DRAFT!

BTW, if anybody picked up some stuff in their boxes, etc., that they'd want to trade, send me a PM. I have some jersey cards and stuff of players that aren't exactly my favorite.

Fantastic article AP! What a nice thing to read!

Um, I'm going to admit that I have no idea about the "redemption cards" you are talking about. Can someone explain that part?

I haven't read this thread that much and must admit that some of it makes little sense to me, lol. Buti I'm glad there were enough people to make it a success!!

My kids collect cards (here and there) and have a few jersey cards, but I guess nothing too fancy (though my fave is a Staal card from preseason where he still had his curly locks, lol). They do have a Mike Bossy Islanders card that had some sliver of the Joe Louis boards or something? I guess that's one to keep?

well most jersey cards are very thick... redemptons cards are the same thickness as any other card so you cant feel the packs for game jersey cards at a hobby shop. thats just cheating. Those cards then can be traded in for whatever the card says.... could be a game jersey card, autograph card, a whole game worn jersey, bats, sticks, helmets, and anything hard to fit in a pack of cards.

hope taht answers your question

Gladly. If you bought a box of any brand of Pacific trading cards at the Draft and opened them at their booth, you were given a bunch of cards (ie: the redemption cards). Among them were 3 cards that had a piece of the nets used in this year's All Star game, as well as 8 cards called Calder Reflections which featured the top Calder candidates from the past year (Staal, Ryder, Raycroft, Fleury, etc)

I haven't read this thread that much and must admit that some of it makes little sense to me, lol. But I'm glad there were enough people to make it a success!!

Sorry, I guess us collectors do have our own lingo.

Any memorabilia, be it current players, or "vintage stars" which Bossy would be classified as, is always a good one to keep or trade. The way I see it, if you are collecting for $$$ value, then you are forever going to be disappointed. Collect for yourself. Collect the players you like and don't worry about their dollar value. This way it's more fun, and you can enjoy the hobby better. Also, pick one set each year, complete it and let someone else worry about the other 10 000 sets out there. This way you can get a sense of accomplishment too.

Thanks Aaryn, your post answered some questions and created others, lol.

They seem to enjoy it. It's always fun for them to "find" a card they have for a player the Canes have acquired (like Gerber).

Beyond that I really don't get involved. Although I was 'collecting' a sub-collection of cards that were all my favorite French Canadian names, Dandenault, Desjardins, St. Louis, Lecavalier, etc.

There's a nice little write up in this month's Beckett Hockey magazine aboUt the redemption cards that we received at the Draft (Page 6). Someone wrote a letter asking aboUt the value of the cards and why they weren't listed in the magazine's price guide. Now we have an idea what the cards are worth ($5-50 for the net cards and LO column pricing for the Calder Reflections cards).

As many of you know, don't collect for $$$ value, and have had these card put away for my soon-to-be born child, so this info doesn't really matter to me, but I thought I'd pass this along.
