Mississippi Re-Sign Anthony Battaglia
June 23, 2004-BILOXI, Miss. – Bob Woods, Mississippi Sea Wolves general manager and coach announced today that the team has re-signed left wing Anthony Battaglia (bah-TAHG-lee-ah).
Battaglia, 24, returns for his second year with Mississippi and third season of professional hockey. A native of Chicago, Battaglia registered career highs last season with 23 goals, 14 assists and 37 points. In the playoffs, he finished second on the team with six points, notching two goals and four helpers in five games. The 6-foot and 195-pound Battaglia netted his first career hat trick, the Sea Wolves lone three-goal game last year, on January 23 against Augusta. Battaglia was acquired by Mississippi in a trade with the Florida Everblades on October 1, 2003 for Stu Pietersma.
“It was a great situation in Mississippi for me last season and I wanted to come back,” said Battaglia. “I’ve been working out with my brother (Jon “Bates” Battaglia of the Washington Capitals) in the offseason to do everything I can to surpass my totals from last year.”
“Anthony was a pleasant surprise for us,” said Woods. “Battaglia was one of the most consistent scorers and a big part of last season’s team. We’re happy to have him back in a Sea Wolves uniform.”

...so that voids his connection with the 'Canes? Or does that mean there never was one?

He was a free agent signing with the Everblades. He was able to come to the Canes preseason camp in the fall of '02 (I'm sure in part as a nice thing for Bates and the fact they had about 60-something people in their post-SC stupor), but he didn't have a contract with the Canes.
