O'Neill is staying here! :D

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 29, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the Hurricanes have agreed to terms with right wing Jeff O’Neill on a one-year contract. As per club policy, no other terms were released.
“We look forward to a strong and healthy Jeff O’Neill next season,” said Rutherford. “We feel he will be a big contributor in the future.”

From 1999-2000 until 2002-03, O’Neill posted more than 60 points per season, led the team in goals in each of those seasons and led the team in points twice (2000-01 and 2002-03). In 2000-01, O’Neill posted career-highs with 41 goals and 67 points while playing in all 82 of the Hurricanes’ regular-season games. He made his first NHL All-Star Game appearance in 2003, playing for the Eastern Conference squad. His 2003-04 season was cut short when he underwent season-ending surgery on March 12 to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. O’Neill leads the team in games played (536), goals (176), points (359) and penalty minutes (472), and ranks third with 183 assists, since the team relocated to North Carolina prior to the 1997-98 season.

O’Neill, 28, was drafted by the Carolina organization with the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. The Richmond Hill, Ont., native has played in 673 regular-season games with the franchise, scoring 198 goals and 218 assists (416 points) while accumulating 552 penalty minutes. O’Neill (6’ 1”, 195 lbs.) ranks fourth in franchise history in goals (198), assists (218) and games played (673), fifth in power-play goals (67) and third in points (416). In his nine-year NHL career, O’Neill has played in 34 playoff games, tallying nine goals and eight assists (17 points), including eight goals and five assists (13 points) during Carolina’s run to the 2002 Stanley Cup finals.

Wow! Before testing free agency or going to arbitration. It will be interesting to see how much the contract was worth. Maybe he just took the qualifying offer?

I'm glad to see him getting another chance. I hope he realizes this is HUGE opportunity for him to step it up.... in skills, leadership... you name it.

Does his father still represent him?

O'Neill signs contact with Canes

By CHIP ALEXANDER, Staff Writer

Ring wing Jeff O'Neill of the Carolina Hurricanes, a restricted free agent, has accepted a qualifying offer of $3.7 million and a one-year contract from the team.
"I feel very fortunate to be able to get this opportunity," O'Neill said today. "Last year was not a good year for me. I have to prove .. to the Hurricanes and the fans again that I can go out and have a good season and warrant a good salary."

O'Neill, 28, is the franchise's longest-tenured player and the Canes' only All-Star in the last two seasons. Hampered by an injury last year, he was limited to 14 goals after scoring 30 or more for three straight seasons.

"I played with an injury since November last season," he said. "But people play with injuries. To blame an injury for the lack of production is not acceptable."

He knows he has something to prove...that'll motivate him to become our #1 scorer again. Seems like last year we placed our hopes on him and Vrbata to be our scorers, and neither were able to deliver. I think he'll be a major part of our offense next year, and return to his all-star form.
And, with Weekes and Francis gone, he'll be the face of the team.

Go to another meeting!!!! Maybe by the time you get back we would have traded Weekes!!!!! Sorry - did I say that? Don't wanna step on toes, but I will be glad when he is gone. I know all of the losses you cannot pin on the goalie, but that is not the only reason I dislike him ... to me winning is one thing, but how you react toward your fans, especially the kids, is another. Both Kevin and Aarron turned there nose at my son, and I have forever been against anything positive towards either of them. Sure it is a team and I need to support the team, but shouldn't you support those that support (and help pay) you?

This is the wrong thread, but I think players can have bad days when it comes to fans.

My kids were leery of Weekes because of his intensity, but he has never been anything but great with them the number of times we've encountered him (RZ, Skate with the Canes, etc.).

I understand that our opinion of players (and how much we care if they stay or not) is formed by all sorts of things, but I do think the fan interaction is something they can't all be great at all the time. I haven't seen any of them universally standoffish.

I thought this was the "Jeff O'Neill contract thread", not the "Keven Weekes sucks" thread. *rolls my eyes* Weekes looked like he really hated kids when he made a special trip from Toronto to go to the boys and girls club of Rocky Mount a couple of weeks ago.

anyway, kudos to JR and O'Neill. Good job both parties!

I find myself happy that he re-signed.

Yes. You can all pick yourselves off the floor now. (I had to do that to myself when I realized I was thinking that.)

My big deal with O last season wasn't always intended to be bashing him. I have never denied that O is/was GOOD. Instead I always felt that if we could do something BETTER, we should have.

Right now, there isn't a BETTER alternative, so I am more than happy to settle for GOOD after the two seasons we just had.

...Re-reading this, I still sound harsh. I don't mean to. Glad he's back.

You mean  ? :p

Anytime you're in the public spotlight, people are always trying to get your attention. For any of the players, not just Weekes, there have to be times where you're just sick of all the people and you want to be alone...or to try to get where you're going on time, instead of sticking around and giving 100 signatures. I think the majority of our players are very fan-friendly...but sometimes, they just need to get away!

case in point- I think it was Montoya at the draft this weekend... 15 minutes after being on stage, he's STILL trying to make his way back to the media area. He's allllllmost there.... couple of kids see him, he signs some More autographs (hence the slow trek)... and once that happens, 6-8 more kids in that section all haul ass down there.

he looked up at them, and moved on. now, you know those kids were NOT happy. Maybe even will hold a grudge against him for a good while.
But, there's a line. you can't expect people (Any person, not just a star) to just put their plans on hold indefinitely. A star athlete can easily get trapped into signing "just a few more" for hours and hours.

If they walk away... big deal.

now, let's try not to turn this into "who is good and who sucks with the crowd" thread.

isn't the club only required to make a 10% increase offer if a player is below league average? was O'Neill below league average (in pay)? (read this on Fanhome, it's not a factoid I had in the back of my head ;) )

whatever the pay and whatever the decision making process on both sides, I'm glad he will be back next year. I like that he has been with this team his whole career. we need veteran leadership on the ice. now that he has made his decision and sounds as if he is ready to show us that last year was an abberation, then good for him. it doesn't change my opinion of him off the ice, but I'm glad he'll be back on the ice for the Canes.

Yes, that's correct (and I wasn't the smart person on Fanhome either):

(A) if the player's Prior Year's
Salary is equal to or less than the Average League Salary for
that League Year, 110% of the major league portion of his Prior
Year's Salary,

(B) if the player's Prior Year's
Salary is greater than the Average League Salary for that League
Year, 100% of the major league portion of his Prior Year's
Salary,

Once again I like O'Neill's attitude here... not always the one projected but the one that brings me to respecting him again. He specifically mentioned the fans and his desire to put out a good effort.

I think from a CBA standpoint it's good to get guys signed and at some guaranteed salary to let them think twice about prolonging this CBA issue.

Well, I'm glad to see that I was right (when concerning the Leaf fans I work with and their insistance that he was going to be traded) and that O'Neill is here for another year and that JR said he will be "big contributor in the future".

As for the Weekes deal, put me down as on the "Keep Weekes" bus because I think you're all NUTS if you think there is a better alternative out there for the money. Gerber is a nice addition, but his rightful place is as second fiddle until one of our youngins step up and show their mettle at the PRO level or one of them suddenly becomes the second coming (props to Captain Slack for that one). Just my 2¢, and take them for what you will as I'm still trying to catch up from my trip to see yall.

Great to hear that O'Neill seems to be happy to have things worked out. Perhaps seeing the young talent we've got has inspired him.

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/1383784p-7506738c.html

"Last year was not a good year for me. I have to prove to Jim Rutherford, the Hurricanes and the fans again that I can go out and have a good season and warrant a good salary."

Asked if agreeing to the Canes' offer brought a feeling of relief, O'Neill said, "Right now, my only feeling is one of excitement."

Rutherford said it was understandable O'Neill's name came up in trade talks last season as teams moving toward the playoffs began to shop for experienced players.

"But just because there's trade talk doesn't mean there will be a trade," Rutherford said Tuesday. "We're happy we have Jeff signed and can move forward. He was injured last year and played through it, but he should be back to 100 percent after the surgery.

"He has been good for us in the past, and being fully healthy, he should be good for us again."

I hope the young talent does inspire him cause if he has another 14 goal season it's not gonna be good.

case in point- I think it was Montoya at the draft this weekend...

I witnessed the exact same moment, and someone I was sitting near made a comment about him leaving the kids there ... I argued the same point as Guy. Also, at the same time as more kids showed up, I saw one of the creepy memorabilia guys with like five things in his hands, waiting for Montoya. Another good reason for him to split.

Don't know the league average, but check out this site, http://nhlpa.com a good one I just discovered that shows each team's individual payroll. Nothing on the CBA from their perspective though. And the player in the middle is a good 'un today!

Here is another one that is easier to see a team comparison on:
http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/salaries/default.aspx
You can also go back as far as 2000 which is nice. It's also interesting to do the top 25 salaries and look at their production for the year (or lack thereof in many cases!)

I know for a fact that all the guys hate dealing with these people. I also know when the guys are on the road and they see a "dealer" they will not stop for him no matter what. Sometimes the real fans have to get bypassed for different reasons.. I have seen some of our guys trying to get to their cars when leaving for the airport for an away game and kids would practically be hanging on them until they got in their cars. They are always gracious.. One day O was leaving the RecZone, this woman and her child step in front of his car and when he rolled down his window, the woman leans all the way in and asks for something.. He was not happy with her but touching his car and stopping him when he was already leaving is not very respectful..... Most of us practice "regulars" have respect for them once they reach their vehicles and give them space..

This is a big reason that I've always given Tiger Woods *tons* of credit for only signing for kids. Sure, maybe someone gets their kid to get an autograph for them to sell on eBay, but at least he can weed out most dealers right from the start. Maybe some bitter adults in a crowd won't get a signature, but for every adult he skips, he gets to one more kid. It's a lot easier to get back on the good side of a 30-year old that you snubbed than a 6-year old kid. Everything means that much more.

I recall last year (2003) when my family and I went to Atlanta. As we left the hotel to walk to dinner before the game, there were about 6 men waiting by the team bus, all with "stuff" for them to sign. Not one had on a bit of Canes (or Thrasher) clothing. A couple of guys stopped to sign, but I would have like to see how many just walked right past. I wouldn't blame the one bit.

That's a good policy, but Tiger's kind of a jerk. My brother works at Dale Earnhardt Inc. and was waiting for his flight at a private hangar and so were Woods and Eddie George. My brother's always liked Tiger, and after talking to him for a bit he asked, "I have a golf ball, would you mind signing it?" Tiger responded with, "I don't sign golf balls."

Huh? You're a golfer! I mean, obviously my brother wasn't some memorabilia guy, b/c he was waiting in a private hangar. And they had chatted for a while ... why not just give someone your autograph? It wasn't like there were 40 people in line waiting for him to scribble something. Eddie George, on the other hand, was just a great, down-to-earth guy, from what my brother told me.

This was right after Tiger's big hot streak, which was followed by him not winning a tournament for some time ... my brother likes to think he unleashed some bad golf karma on Tiger or something

So, anyway ... sure, don't sign all the time ... but don't be a total pr*ck in a situation like that.

I think a lot of pro athletes/celebs take the same stance and only sign for kids. Spring training in FLA is a great place to get autographs and most players are cool, but I heard Bobby Valentine say flat out to everyone "I only sign for the kids." I agree with him. It's exciting for the kids. The adults might have a good chance of succumbing to "get-rich-quickitis" and sell them.

Sounds like O might have been humbled by the off year and is looking forward to proving he's still a scorer. I hope so. The Canes could certainly use it! :)

I think every celebrity on the planet has some story (or stories) that someone tells about how he/she was a jerk one time. Personally, I'd rather not hear them or tell them. They are only human and I don't expect them to be perfect. I certainly know several stories about some of our Canes but I don't see what good it does to share them. We don't know what the player's personal situation was that day and we all have bad days sometimes. Plus, I just really don't mind if they are jerks as long as they win games. :D

My point was he fine talking to my brother, but was all weird about signing a golf ball ... and many golfers sign golf balls ... a sharpie works fine on them, as long as you give them a minute or two to totally dry.

My point was he fine talking to my brother, but was all weird about signing a golf ball ... and many golfers sign golf balls ... a sharpie works fine on them, as long as you give them a minute or two to totally dry.

I think every celebrity on the planet has some story (or stories) that someone tells about how he/she was a jerk one time. Personally, I'd rather not hear them or tell them. My post wasn't actually in reply to your post. This has been a discussion going on here for quite some time and I was just giving my 2 cents on the whole thing. It all started with a story about Weekes and I'm just now getting around to throwing my opinion in.

I was just in the car for a minute and heard AG say that JR would not be able to join them this afternoon due to business he was taking care of.

Interesting. Looks like he'd hope to have things wrapped up by noon, but things are taking a bit longer. Maybe he'll actually have a couple of folks signed rather than just qual offers.

Or maybe he can't make up his mind.

Totally agree with that- I too have heard 'stories' and sometimes it's just better not to know. I'm of the thought that yep, it would be nice to get an autograph and I'll ask/wait in line if the situation presents itself- mainly at Canes events where I believe they are 'working'. And as many times as I attend practices -nearly every day when the season is on- either at the RecZone or RBC, I'd much prefer that kids get autographs especially at the RZ where it can get really hectic- and I know lots of folks like to hang out after practices at the RBC & RZ, I just like to give them their space....

Quick story of my own- went to the DBAP for the Prospects batting practice; not only got a Draft 2004 shirt thrown out to the crowd by Alexandre Picard (#8th pick courtesy us to Columbus) but got Ovechkin's autograph on that shirt- we bought seats right behind the dugout (2nd row) that was Team Canada- which was the same location where the prospects entered the field from; anyway, after the batting practice they took pics with Team USA, then Team Canada- Ovechkin was walking back to the Dugout area for the Team Canada group photo, when a Caps fan came up and asked for his autograph- I got up from my seat and stood next to him- just as he was finishing signing for the guy, the media relations guy calls him and tells him to get in the picture- Ovechkin turns to me and states in his best english "one moment please, I must go take picture, please stay here" so he goes over to the group, takes photos, shakes hands, gets accosted by LeafsTV crew for an interview, all the while looking over to make sure I'm still there and holding up his finger as if to say '1 minute' finishes up and comes over to me and says 'so sorry' and signs my draft tee in perfect script, all the while, myhubby is burning up the pictures on the digital camera in which he lifts his head to smile directly into the lens (!) I'll tell that story forever, and he's never going to play for the Canes and is now a member of the much hated Washington Caps- it's the 'memory' - and not just because I think the kid is a good guy (I definitely do after observing him at the RZ and Live after 5 and the Batting Practice) but he is what is good about sports. Sure he'll have his own bad days now that he's a pro, but his legend and so many other good guys in hockey will grow just because of stuff like that...... sorry for the long reply- getting carried away there.... :)

First of all I'd like to thank JR, PK, and the entire Carolina Hurricanes. Also the city of Raleigh, all for their great hospitality shown at the draft.

Secondly I'd like to thank and congradulate the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Calgary flames for one helluva Stanley Cup Finals!

With that said cmw00 would like to select.... :D

Seriously though Tiger Didn't sign the golf ball because it wasn't a Nike ball.

and as far as Jeff, I was all for trading him last season if we could have gotten 2 good young players with promising potential. But since we didn't oh well. Healthy Jeff or not I'm not sure we have the people to assist Jeff in getting 30+ goals. I think Jeff would be better suited to a more veteran team, or atleast another Ron Francis type player

and Eric Staal is no Ron Francis just yet.

Agree with ya CM. It's going to be interesting to see what O does this year (if we have a season) after the injury layoff.

having a good setup man definitely helps. O'Neill is a great finisher, but i still don't see him able to do it on his own. but if he can get a groove going with another center and fit into Laviolette's system, he could get himself right back to that 30-40 plateau.

if not, well, the team really gelled once Francis was traded and O'Neill was IR'ed. if O'Neill struggles early, getting 2 youngsters with potential for him could still happen.
