View Full Version : Brendl is out of shape

Forgive me all, I'm just going through serious Canes withdrawal. Here's a link to one of today's article in the N&O.
http://newsobserver.com/sports/story/2427540p-2258960c.html
Here's the part about Brendl:
Rutherford also said goalie Arturs Irbe definitely would not be invited to training camp, although the Canes will continue to pay his salary -- $5.2 million over the next two seasons -- and that prospect Pavel Brendl, acquired in the Sami Kapanen trade, "needs to be in much better shape to make this team."
Seems like Bruno was definitely the good part of that trade.

at this point, sure, it's easy to say that.
I've watched Brendl get the shaft in philly... and I hope I don't have to watch it here.
For a guy that scored well over 100 points 2 consecutive years in the minors... dude deserves a little time. he's young. JR wants to give Tanabe several years to "hit his stride", he should surely show some patience with Pavel as well. I'm not saying he should be guaranteed to make the team, not at all. I think some time in the minors would do him well. Not as well as if Mo forced him to pair up with Brindy for workouts... THAT is how you get someone in shape.... :D
I just don't want to see him traded, under the pretense that he's out of shape.

I saw Brendl several times at practice and he is not fat..he is a big boy but looks to be in good shape to me...he may not be very conditioned....he seemed to be the "odd man out" at the last few practices when he was on the ice...seemed to be a loner..and before I got there, someone told me that the guys were really pounding on him...so who knows!!??

I hope those comments signal both Brendl and the other Baby Canes that they better all arrive at camp in top shape and ready to challenge for those open slots. If Brendl doesn't get that message, then he certainly deserves to start the season in Lowell.
I know we can all observe to some extent, but I'm sure these comments come from observing Brendl's off ice fitness level by Pete Freisen, etc.

Don't trade him!!
From what I've seen, he's a little slow, but the boy has wicked soft hands. Some of the passes he made reminded me of plays Kovalev would make. I think IF he gets the chance and goes through a Mo (he is good for something, see!) Summer Conditioning Camp he will be a much improved player for us--2nd line. I'd like to see what he can do on a line with Cole and Rod. May not happen--but would like to see it.

JR wants to give Tanabe several years to "hit his stride", he should surely show some patience with Pavel as well.
Bingo. Tanabe, Halko, C-Mac, et al get chance after chance but when Brendl, Druken, and Hlavac come in and don't tally nightly hattricks, they go straight on JR's outpatient list. What a joke.

Ah yes, if we can only acquire a couple of solid defensemen over the summer, we may never have to see Tanabe or Halko again.(at least not on the Canes roster)

Gotta love optimism. The Canes get two solid d-men, that just means Mo will suit Tanabe and Halko up as wings. Anything to get Brendl and Druken out of the mix...

Whats the story with Druken anyway? He looked pretty good on the few shifts he got after the game or two he was allowed to actually play in. He must have a bad attitude and be out of shape.

Talk about upside! I don't get why he's in the dog house....unless he is really not willing to do the work. But it seemed he was in the dog house before they even had the chance to know that. Weird.

That was wide spread around Philly too that Brendl was out of shape and a lazy player. he may not be lazy but he doesn't put too much hustle in his play....he kinda just waits for it to happen....i mean i am not saying that he is bad because i don't think he is ....i think he will and can be a good player...as for the 2 100 point seasons in the minors u must be talking about the junior right because i saw him play alot in the ahl and he didn't score much at all...but i hope that he does get his chance to prove himself

I thought there was some discussion about if Druken came back up for a certain number of games that he'd have to clear waivers to be sent down again, etc.
Not having seen these guys off ice, I don't know if we have the whole picture of their fitness level, work ethic, etc.
Edited to actually say what I meant to say.

Here's Brendl's career stats:
http://www.nhlpa.com/Content/THE_PLAYERS/player_bio1.asp?ID=7147
yes, the obscene scoring outbursts were in the WHL.
in 01-02, before he was called up (or across the street, as the case is in philly), he played 64 games for the phantoms, and had 37 points. that's not too shabby.
the problem in philly was he's never been given tons of chances. I think he'll have his best shot here. I hope that he can take advantage of it.

I just went and looked at Brendl's career stats....2 years in the WHL: 134 (73 goals!!!) and 111 points in 68 and 61 games respectively. The next year 49 games...75 points including 40 goals! Amazing! Man I wish this kid would pan out!

Well I think he was quoted as saying he knew he was getting a "new chance" with the Canes. I think he even said something like "my career starts now", so hopefully he's going to make the best of the chance.

I would love to see what Brendl can do, especially now since he's had that knee repaired.

Whats the story with Druken anyway? He looked pretty good on the few shifts he got after the game or two he was allowed to actually play in. He must have a bad attitude and be out of shape.
Love to know. I've been a very vocal supporter of his since his first game with the Canes. Maybe there were off-ice issues after all? Dunno, but he looked damned good on ice as far as i'm concerned.

I as well. Hey, maybe he isn't going to be worth a crap, but if the Canes are going to give Future Captain shot upon shot, then Brendl deserves a shot or two.

I think as long as Brendl comes to camp in shape, he'll have a great shot. And once in camp and Freisen gets hold of him, we'll see what he can do. Now, if he comes in out of shape, then we'll know he didn't really put much effort into his off season conditioning.
He sounds like he wants to make it with this team so I'll take him at his word until I see differently. He looked slim at the last game when he came out to present his jersey.
Some skating styles seem to make players look lazy. I'm not saying he won't turn out to be a slug on skates, but as long as he tries and is in shape and shoots the puck.....I say give him a chance.

I've never thought he was fat, just looked kinda big w/all his gear on. And maybe his slowness was due to him favoring the knee. Hopefully time will tell...

Well, the buzz is the Rangers were willing to trade him to the Flyers because he was out of shape, so this seems to be a chronic problem. Perhaps over the summer he should be skated until C-Mac collapses.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

I went to the last Cane practice the day before I went to the last game and it was great. After practice I see Pavel run out to go get a shower with a towel around his neck and no shirt. And to me, since yes I admit I was looking, he was not out of shape. He looks just fine to me! And he is very tan-looking for a Czech too. Joe is very pale. Why is that? Just wondering.
