I hope they pass this to keep this from happening to someone else. Yesterday coming to work, a passing car hit a huge piece of tire that went airborne and hit my sister's car creating a big dent in the hood.. we were lucky... I have lived in NC my whole life and am proud of our state, but our roads have to be the trashiest I have ever seen..

Local Woman Urges Congress To Get Hazardous Debris Off Roads

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Advocates for highway and auto safety are urging Congress to speed up a bill to curb deadly accidents. Among other things, the group wants lawmakers to get hazardous debris off the roads.

The mother of a local woman who died trying to avoid hazardous debris testified at Monday's hearing, as did a friend of the woman.

In March, 22-year-old Lauren Braddy died on Interstate 95 in Central Florida. She swerved to avoid a scrap of tire tread in the road.

The car flipped, killing her, a friend, and injuring two others.

Driving back from Wilmington a few days ago on I-40, I was amazed at the number of tires on the side of the road. The debris would be spread out over half a mile per tire. Now, travelling on interstates in other states, you really don't see it that much. Do we have more blown tires, or do other states just clean up better?

Another thing that gets me is people that litter...the downright nerve of them! Is it really that hard to put your Burger King cup and your Hardees fry wrapper into the trash can at home? It's sheer irresponsibility...sheer laziness. Yet people continue to do it...look at all of the crap on the sides of the road.
One of my most vivid memories of my early-childhood stays with my grandparents was seeing my grandmother throw the peelings of an orange out of the car door window while in transit. Being biodegradable does not make it right...it's still an eyesore, and takes time to decompose, especially when it's sitting on some lonely patch of asphalt shoulder on a deserted interstate highway...Trash is trash, and it's an eyesore.

the tire debris on the roads may be more prevalent here than in other states because it gets so damn hot here...

it does seem like i've noticed more trash along the highways though. especially where they're doing construction and they have a wall down the middle of the interstate -- the trash just collects there next to the wall.

about a week ago, a big piece of paper (like half a sheet of newspaper or something) flew up and stuck to my grille and i drove around for 10 minutes with it on there before it came off (feeling like a moron too, btw). at least it didn't fly up and cover my windshield!!! :eek2:

Trash is trash, and it's an eyesore.

I agree Turby.. I NEVER litter and it makes me angry when I see it happen... our state is too beautiful to trash like some do..

and Amanda once my car was at the shop for an oil change and my mechanic pointed out a grocery bag that was stuck under my car.. no telling how long it had been there.. :D

atleast they finally cleaned up all that crap at the I-40 -540 connection. My gosh was that ever embarrassing. I remember someone wrote to who ever was in charge (government) and *whoever* replied that he thought it was ok to let people park and ride there!!! LOL!!! PARK AND RIDE????? How do you park and ride with cars that have no wheels and windows!!!

I brought this up to a friend a couple of years ago. I moved out here from Calif. about 6 1/2 years ago and one thing that I always shake my head at is that people around here dump their mattresses to the side of the road!! What the hell is THAT About?????

Last week I was driving through Missouri (driving my dad and stepmom home from a vacation gone bad.) Beautiful drive on a really nice highway. All the sudden these two HUGE long paper sacks tumble out the back of a truck. The truck that was ahead and beside me hit the first one and I just got a glimps of what it was and then I hit the second one. Thank God it was just grass and debris from doing lawns. Scared the hell out of me.

Speak of the devil... There was a pack of quick-dry cement that had fallen out of a truck and onto the middle of Six Forks Road today that I had to avoid and almost got into an accident at about 45 mph. Major scare.

Wow Tommy - nothing like getting the heart rate up.

Tonight on the way home, I swear to God, there was a Sheriff pulled off in the grass of the 540 median and he was SWEEPING. I took a double take and then realized it looked like a whole load of crap must have fallen off a truck or something. There was all sorts of paper debris and a refrigerator lying on its side in the grass. I suppose he was sweeping some debris that could have popped a tire. But the image was certainly odd - given our discussion here today.

i've run over a metal ladder on the beltline. couldn't swerve unless I wanted to involve anyone else and cause an accident. it's a miracle none of the tires were punctures. several years ago, someone from work was on his way to work and a ladder fell off a truck and went thru his windshield. he got hurt pretty bad and was in rehab for quiter a while-memory was messed up quite bad-had to relearn to talk, walk, etc.
it's a shame people won't secure their load and ride on crappy tires and feel the need to throw their trash out instead of taking it to the closest trash can.

Alright E.. did you have some sort of "open container" in the car with you when you "saw" this??? :p

Nothing I see on the highway surprises me anymore.. yesterday morning on I-40 BEFORE the piece of tire hit our car, there was an entire truck tire in the middle of the right lane with pieces of wire sticking up...it was a 10 car pileup waiting to happen..

the refrigerator was a good one though..

that is true shill22.. all they have to do is secure their load.. I love it when you get near one of those gravel trucks and he is a mile ahead of you in the other lane.. and when he breaks your windshield (mine has three cracks right now), there is a sign on the back that reads not responsible for broken windshields.. stay back 200 ft... I love the way they have their tags on the front of the truck!!!

that motorcycle policeman that was killed a couple of years ago, was killed because when he was chasing a suspect, he lost control and when he did he hit debris on the side of the road..

Okay - am I the only one that is noticing ALL SORTS of crap on the roads since this thread appeared

Today it was a big piece of lumber (actually two pieces), yesterday a big construction hardhat and goggles.

BTW, the fridge is still in the median of 540 - 3 days later.

I want to know why, if you see a shoe..... it's always just ONE. Where's the other one?

Are there lots of people out there, who- like-- sit on their bumpers puttin' on their shoes? They get one done, and it's "Oh geez! I'm late for work!" Then they jump in the their car, driving off while their other shoe is sitting on the bumper, eventually falling off???

Once, I drove past a dead body.

Once, on highway 46 in Michigan, the pickup truck in front of me lost a tire. It somehow rolled right up my hood, smacked into my windshield (amazingly it didn't even get a crack), and then continued right on up and over my car.

....and you really saw a dead body???

Sorry, ya'll.... I've been busy.

Well.... I can't totally confirm it was a real person. But it looked real to me.

I was on Hwy. 1, near the Walnut St./Cary Town Ctr. exit. Laying in the median was a big dark green trash bag-- like a leaf bag, that someone had thrown there. It was open at the top, and you could see a leg from the knee down and part of an arm hanging out.

My husband thinks it was a mannequin, but I beg to differ..... :eek2:
