I will admit to having no clue about how this is supposed to work anyway. Some huge names drafted (Heatley, Bertuzzi, Kovalchuk, etc) and then the very much lesser names (Zig, Craig MacDonald, etc.) - are they just taking wild ass guesses on who might be willing to sign up?
And will the WHA sign contract that let people out if/when the NHL CBA is resolved?
It's all very confusing to me,

they also drafted Thornton so if that $45 million deal doesn't happen with Boston, at least the boy can get work

Very weird draft... some of the top picks are "sure things" to need a place to play regardless of CBA completion or not. Others are prayers. Funny how they had the draft at a casino at Niagara falls. Gambling with picking these players?

Joe Thornton signed with HC Davos anyway with a clause that he can come back if the NHL starts on time.

Hey now, don't forget Craig Adams at #120 overall. If that's not something to shove in front of JR when demanding a raise, I dunno what is .

i smell a WHA2 flop
WHA2 has already given up the ghost and changed it's name to the 'Southern Professional Hockey League' (which now includes the Cafe Fear Fire Antz). guess the WHA isn't going to have an in-house minor league after all.
but if the NHL doesn't get their mess together, i think there will still be a WHA. better than nothing, i guess.

ladd going that late furthers the WHA stupidity. Simon Gagne went first overall in the free agent draft. theres others i would have taken way ahead of Gange.
all in all the WHA looks as though they are doin a crap shoot picking people at random
also look at that brett and bobby hull jacket link
http://www.cairnsstudio.com/jacket/
Brett Hull number 16??? I think not... kinda screwy. not on the Red Wings any way (the uniform in which he is pictured no less)

Gagne was taken by the Quebec franchise, and his French-ness is most likely the reason they'd take him over, say, Anglo-tastic Joe Thornton .
As for the Hulls...16 has always been Brett's number, but the retiring of Vlad's #16 kept him from it in Detroit.

they also drafted some retired players so I'm not sure a player's position in the draft is really all that important ;)

Andrew ladd was 12 overall in their amateur draft. Hmmmmm.
The London Knights' own Danny Richmond went 19th, and Brett carson wasn't taken at all.
On a side note, I guess a part of me is hoping this "Founder's Franchise" is placed in Hartford. I miss my Whalers.
