I just got fired from my job at Hallmark.

It was a fantastic job too...wonderful people and hours. Needless to say, I'm rather heartbroken...and cannot help but tear up at least once an hour for the remainder of the day, possibly the week too.

If anyone here ever knows of a job available somewhere in Wake Forest or North Raleigh...PLEASE let me know. Thanks a lot in advance.

Sorries, SB. You'd be first on the list if I had a job to give. I suppose you could take out my aunt's dog for me, but the pay sucks.

Sorry about the job-loss, Caroline. Don't take it too personally. These chain stores are really good for hiring lots and lots of people during the busy times, and then firing them all once things slow down again.

As for where to apply, I'd suggest some of the bigger book stores, like Borders or Barnes and Nobles. They always seem to be hiring, and they look like relatively low-stress places to work. Good luck!

I've had good friends who worked at Barnes and Noble. While the hours can be kinda crappy (if you don't like working late, on weekends, etc) they do treat their employees very well.

Good luck!

Hmmmm...good point. Though, the Hallmarks I worked for had a small staff (ten people, including the managers and me). One of the co-workers was leaving at the end of this summer for college. There was also talk that one of the co-workers' daughters was going to get hired. I never paid much attention to that because of the said co-worker going to college.

Sorry to hear that, Caroline!!! Did they say why? Was business slow?

No, business wasn't really slow...it was typical summertime traffic. Quiet some times and steady other times. My boss (who told this to my mother over the phone, BTW) claimed that "I wasn't comfortable around customers". And I'm sorry, but I have to call BS on that. Because if I was not comfortable around customers, then I would not have racked up as many new Gold Crown Customers as I did NOR would I have had so many compliment me saying I was doing a good job.

(sighs) It's times and situations like this that make me scream "WHAT DOES IT TAKE?"...

Anyway, thanks for the hugs and sorrys thus far...I really can use them.

That's not the way to do it. That's not how you treat an employee. It's rude to do it over the phone...and for you to hear it through someone else is even worse.

But if he acts like that, he's probably not the kind of manager one would want to work for anyway...

WHAT DOES IT TAKE?
All you can do is your best. It's important to remember that you did your best, and if that isn't good enough for them then so be it! It sounds like you were the ideal employee. If they think they can get better help elsewhere, then let them.
You will find a job elsewhere, I just know it! :)

I may soon join the ranks of the unemployed, as well. I've have been, for lack of a better term, been getting the shaft at work over the past 8 months or so. Working harder than everyone else...being the most loyal and trustworthy employee...even going as far to help co-workers who weren't doing their job right...and getting paid less than everyone else in the store, all due to a clerical error. And it's not some self-superiority complex either...it's very evident. I've been told that the situation would be rectified...that I would get a raise and backpay for the past year. They told me that 8 months ago, and here I am.
Not to derail the subject...just needed to vent.

Caroline,

Sorry to hear about this. I know you were a very proactive employee (you emailed me about some Whale and Turtle items), and yeah, I agree your boss SHOULD have told you to your face, but remember, everything happens for a reason. Maybe your next job is just around the corner and possibly going to be offered to you by someone who was a customer of your's at your old job. Who knows? Just remember, you're better off.

Aaryn

PS: Hopefully the package I sent you earlier this week will get to you soon to cheer you up.

I'm sorry Caroline. I hope you find something soon. I have a friend who decided to ditch her teaching job and is working at Starbucks. She loves it and the benefits are good. Health insurance if you work 20+ hours. It helps if you like coffee, but it's not a requirement ;)

Again, thanks everyone...I cannot say enough how much I appreciate the support. It's incredible how five mere minutes can shape the landscape of your entire day...I have had and still have a headache from being so frustrated and miserable all day.

With that said, I could use a nice dose of the Hanson Brothers right now...in other words, Aaryn, I *really* look forward to the package coming. I hope it gets here tomorrow...

EEEEEkkk Caroline. I hate that for you. I know you are a very outgoing and energetic person. You should be able to pick up something either at another bookstore, or at a restaurant without too much trouble. I would even suggest that you look at writing a collumn at the newspaper, even if you do it for free for a while, or in the alternative press.

Your boss clearly did not handle this situation correctly. This is not the normal way to let someone go. That reflects poorly upon him, but that being said, you need to search honestly and try to figure out if you had made any mistakes, or had any complaints lodged against you. Think hard and try to figure out if there was ANYTHING you could have handled better. If not, just forget about it and move on. If you do find something, then remember it and let it be lesson on what not to do. There is a silver lining in every cloud. Your job is to find it.

I know you feel terrible about this. Don't let it consume you. Have your pity party and then get back to the job of finding a job. You will. You're good. I know you. I'd hire you if you lived in my area and we could take on another employee.

I'm so sorry to hear about this Caroline. Several places near Brier Creek are hiring. I know Panera is and I think Caribou Coffee as well. My brother-in-law started at the Caribou in Brier Creek, then trasfered to the one on Franklin when he moved to Chapel Hill. Made decent money thanks to tips, but the early morning hours can be tough. He's in a band so he loves that his nights are free. They had good benefits--insurance, etc.--after you worked for them a little while.

I'm already considering looking into Barnes and Noble at Triangle Town Center or Crabtree Valley Mall, and Borders on Strickland Road for a start, along with Starbucks and Caribou (there are locations at TTC and Falls of the Neuse Road). The newspaper column idea is rather encouraging too...I'd love to write for someone or something hockey or non-hockey related. And heck, if I have to start doing it for free, I will... wish I knew someone in the journalism biz.

Very well put and thanks Phil. Again, even though I feel horrible about what happened, I realize for the same time that it was for the better. And if there was anything wrong, I can't figure out what it was. Oh well...it's just best to move on. There's always light at the end of the tunnel.

Sorry to hear about the bad news "SB". I know in the few times we had talked you mentioned how much you enjoyed your job.

The only advice I have is Harris Teeter is getting ready to open a new store in Wake Forest - might be something to look into until what you want pans outs.

Hang in there - and remember you have a whole lot of support here!!!

It stings more than you can imagine to be let go or laid off or whatever. I think the coming out of the blue is the worst part.

Best of luck, perhaps with school starting up, there will be some job coming available.

aahhh sorry to hear about this. I was laid off once and I was devastated. It happened to be the best thing that ever happened to me. The next job I got started me in a great direction and I never looked back. Hopefully something better is right around the corner.

Also look into Kelley Temp services. They put you in a job that alot of the times could turn into a permanent one.

GOOD LUCK!

And I cannot believe the way your boss handled that. I don't even know if that is legal.

Caroline,
Want some foil?!?

Seriously, this is an opportunity for you to get out of a job that I thought didn't use your full potential. Use your computer website or data talents or creative writing skills. Use your hockey knowledge and enthusiasm. There are a lot of places that need ya, and Hallmark was just holding you back. Move on. Things happen for a reason, and you have a whole slew of references from this website, me included, if you want one. I write a mean reference letter that I can tailor to you for whatever job you choose, whether it be starbucks, barnes and noble, computer related work, or CEO of GE. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Once again, thanks everyone...except for the headache (which won't go away until I get some sleep), I'm slowly starting to feel better.

You're right Eileen in that what made this worst than ever was the whole "out of the blue" aspect of it. Well, that AND my former boss' being such a weenie in deciding to tell my mother instead of me.

You're right Arthur...as much as I loved my job at Hallmark, there was one beef I had with it: No use for my writing, creativity, and/or love/enthusiasm for hockey. I would so love to have a job utilizing one or more of those...but it may take a few more stones to step on to get there. When one of those stones pops up, I will be very happy to take you up on your reference letter offer, Arthur. :)

Yet again, thanks everyone...I just can't thank all of you enough...

Caroline,
Want some foil?!?

Seriously, this is an opportunity for you to get out of a job that I thought didn't use your full potential. Use your computer website or data talents or creative writing skills. Use your hockey knowledge and enthusiasm. There are a lot of places that need ya, and Hallmark was just holding you back. Move on. Things happen for a reason, and you have a whole slew of references from this website, me included, if you want one. I write a mean reference letter that I can tailor to you for whatever job you choose, whether it be starbucks, barnes and noble, computer related work, or CEO of GE. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Sorry to hear of this, Caroline. My lay off last year (two weeks before Christmas no less) was out of the blue, as I was told time and time again I was one the biggest assets to the office I worked in.

The only advice I can offer is this- grow from this as a person. Take into consideration what was said, but DON'T take it to heart. I promise you, you'll be able to grow from this and the next time this happens (and unfortunately that is the business climate we now live in, that even good employees are randomly let go) it won't be as hard. I have no doubt you'll bounce back from this and do even better in your next job. :D

Caroline...I am so sorry! If I lived in Raleigh, I'd help you firsthand with your job search...I used to work in retail and private industry....I got tired of the same BS you're dealing with right now....I've been with the same employer for 18 years now, and I wouldn't trade it for the world! :)

Honestly, have you tried contacting the Canes??

Sorry I didn't get back with you last night.....I shall send more pictures of Ronnie to you tonight to cheer you up.....and in a Penguins uniform, too!

Thanks Caniac369 and FrancisFan...

I have more often than not considered contacting the Canes...the thing holding me back the most currently is the possible lockout. Because chances are that they're not looking to hire anyone, even a column writer of sorts for their website, until that confounded CBA is solved.

Despite that, I do think that I've been noticed...how else did I end up on this (http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/images/snapshots/04draft/draft_poster.pdf)? :D ;)

Looking forward to the pics FrancisFan...you know how to cheer this girl up... :spin:

'Significant' layoffs in store for NHL staff
By Sun Media

TORONTO -- Talks may be resuming today between the NHL and the NHL Players' Association regarding a new collective bargaining agreement, but the league yesterday took a large step toward guarding itself in the event of an expected lockout. NHL employees were given termination notices in the event of a lockout, which would begin when the current agreement expires on Sept. 15. It's believed at least 60% of the employees were told their services no longer would be required as of Sept. 20 if there was a lockout.

The job losses would affect employees in each of the NHL's offices in Toronto, New York, Montreal and New Jersey.

"It's devastating around here," an employee said of the mood in the Toronto office yesterday. "These are significant cuts."

Numerous teams, in anticipation of a lockout, either have laid off employees or informed them of salary cuts.

Teams which have issued layoff notices in anticipation of a lockout include the Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Washington Capitals, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks.

Sorry for the bad news, Stormbringer. What the hell ya doing at hallmark anyway?!? Raise the bar girlie, and do something worthy of your smarts. ;) Then go back to hallmark and give your old boss some papercuts in his anus lining with the sympathy cards you've so thoughtfully used to shove up his nether region.

I am really sorry Caroline, that must have really hurt to lose your job like that. Your boss truly was a coward to not have the decency to at least tell you personally. But onward and upward. Instead, think of it as every negative thing becomes a positive. Take this opportunity to pick yourself up by your bootstraps and find a job that will allow you to use your tremendous talents in writing, or your love of books and reading. You know I've been pestering you to go to college - maybe this is the "sign" that you should go!! What's holding you back? You are tremendously bright Caroline, just reading your writing makes that abundantly clear. Perhaps you should enroll in college and get a degree in journalism or creative writing. Think about it, ok? You know my offer stands to help you apply, find financial aid, etc.

Also, PM me your address again - we watched Raising Canes last night (finally!) and we're ready to send your things back to you. Thanks so much for loaning the DVD to us, it was great!!

And keep your chin up, you're a great talent and don't let this get you down!

Ami

Heh...thanks SC. :) Trust me, I've already been more than tempted to do the very thing you suggested. But, I am better than that...I know I will find an even better job, even if it takes time and/or another job or two...

Thanks also RTW. :) I'll immediately PM my address to you...glad you liked Raising Canes! :spin:

Well, I went to the RBC Center job fair today, and applied for the Ticket Sales, Merchandise Sales, and Ticket Taker positions.

The way things were done was rather laid back and cool...you went up to the Arena Club, and filled out an application while they were playing clips of everything that goes on at the RBC Center on the TVs. (75% of the clips featured the Canes...including one of the 2002 Eastern Conference Final victory :spin:) And then you waited to be interviewed by the manager(s) of the position(s) in which you were interested.

I thought my interviews went well...cross your fingers for me! :spin:
