Husband Arrested In Lori Hacking Disappearance
Salt Lake City Authorities Say They Have 'Found No Body Parts'

SALT LAKE CITY -- The husband of a pregnant woman who disappeared two weeks ago has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, police announced Monday.

In a news conference, Police Chief Rick Densey said detectives "have arrested Mark Hacking for murder in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Lori Hacking."

Densey said "no body parts" have been found.

"We know where the homicide happened, and we believe it happened in the apartment," Densey said, adding that authorities have a "good case" against Mark Hacking even if no body was found.

Authorities say Mark Hacking is to be released from a psychiatric ward later Monday.

Lori Hacking was reported missing July 19. The day after her disappearance, Mark Hacking was taken to the psychiatric ward after he was seen running around at night naked outside a motel where he'd taken a room.

Detective Dwayne Baird issued a brief statement Sunday saying a Hacking family member had provided police with "substantial new information." He wouldn't elaborate.

Baird said the search of the Salt Lake County landfill will resume Friday when cadaver dogs are available again. Baird did not say why the dogs wouldn't be available until then.

Baird did not respond to questions after his brief statement.

The families of Mark and Lori Hacking released a joint statement Saturday night, saying Mark Hacking had given information that makes a search for his wife unnecessary. Police won't say what that information was.

Soon after he reported his wife missing, the lies he had been telling family and friends about his life began to surface. It turns out he was not a medical student and never finished college. Police said his timeline also crumbled.

His father said doctors are trying to "sort out what is going on in his mind."

Salt Lake City television stations have shown a videotape of Mark Hacking joking with friends and lying about his education. He said, for example, that he earned a degree in psychology.

When Hacking was supposedly studying for medical exams -- the story he told his family -- he was often hanging out at a neighborhood store.

What is this? Men killing their pregnant wives? From what I've heard this guy is needing a long stay in the psych ward... I wonder if he'll give up where her body is.

I agree.. what a horrible mess.. :cry: I saw his dad on tv and his dad said that he asked him flat out if he had anything to do with Lori's disappearance and he looked him right in the eye and told his dad NO.. his dad said that he believed him.. :sad:

SALT LAKE CITY -- Police in Salt Lake City say they could have arrested Mark Hacking sooner. But, they say his confinement in a psychiatric ward gave them more time to investigate his wife's disappearance.


Hacking was arrested on suspicion of murder Monday, just before he was scheduled for release from the hospital.

Police think the missing woman was killed in her apartment and they've gathered enough evidence to bring charges against her husband, Mark. They say they've identified a motive and have found the weapon allegedly used to kill her -- but aren't giving more details.

Salt Lake City police chief Rick Dinse says Hacking's husband, Mark, is the "individual responsible."

Mark told family, friends and police that Lori Hacking went jogging July 19 and didn't return.

He was hospitalized after he was seen running around naked outside a motel where he had taken a room, hours after making an emotional appeal on television.

Later, it came out that he'd lied about graduating from college and being accepted in medical school. He also had been seen buying a mattress just before he reported his wife missing and was seen running around naked at a motel.

Investigators think he killed his wife and buried her body in a landfill. Searchers will start using cadaver dogs there again Wednesday.

Now, Mark Hacking is jailed and the subject of a suicide watch.

Lori Hacking's mother said she's "profoundly anguished" and that her family "will grieve for her until the day we die."

Dinse also says police have no proof that Lori Hacking was five weeks pregnant, as she had told friends and relatives. But he said if a body is found and the pregnancy is confirmed, prosecutors could add a murder charge later.

But you know the sad thing is he knew that he was gonna be caught, and he could have staged this for an insanity plea..

I don't know how anyone could kill someone carrying their child.. :cry: If rumors are true and there is a knife with blood and hair, I have my suspicions as to what he did to her and I shudder.

I'm not sure I see how running around naked is good evidence of insanity. If he did stage it he had to have done better than that.

Ive thought about that mona. Like the Don who pretended to have advanced stages of dementia... Theres no point in holding someone like that but the don was able to pretend for years and years and finally stopped acting i beleive when someone close was killed and he needed to testify.

Pardon me being rather blunt, but I can't imagine anyone murdering anyone can be "explained" - stranger, spouse, wife, pregnant wife - whatever.

I realize the point being that it is a horrible horrible crime, but taking anyone's life - even if she isn't pregnant and front page beautiful - is a tragedy.

Anyway, they are reporting that he admitted it to someone in the psychiatric hospital - he killed her while she slept.

Her husband, Mark Hacking, has already been charged in her murder.

It was not immediately clear whether the remains were those of Hacking, 27, who has not been seen since July 18.

Authorities have spent weeks combing through 4,600 tons of trash for any sign of Hacking, whose husband, Mark, reported her missing the following day, saying she never returned from a morning jog.

"If in fact this is Lori's remains, the fact that we are able to bring that family some closure, that is excellent for us to be able to do that for them," Salt Lake City Police Detective Phil Eslinger said.

Hacking has been charged with murder and allegedly confessed to his brothers that he shot his wife while she slept and disposed of her body, the weapon and a mattress in a trash bin.

He is being held on $1 million bail at the Salt Lake County jail.

I cant beleive they set bail for the SOB!!! I just dont understand how they would take a chance of a so-called insane person the opportunity to walk out in the world of the free, he needs to sit and rot, until they do to him what they are going to do, death penalty, etc.
