Clemson is not starting off on a good note..

Coleman Breaks Foot in Clemson Practice

POSTED: 8:00 am EDT August 11, 2004

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson running back Duane Coleman broke his foot during practice Tuesday and won't be able to play for six to eight weeks.

Last season, Coleman led the Tigers with 615 yards rushing. He also caught 34 passes for 309 yards.

"With his loss we will have to evaluate what we are going to do offensively, especially on third down," coach Tommy Bowden said. "He can do things that our other backs can't."

The injury came when Coleman was tackled during a one-on-one drill on the first day of full-contact practice, Bowden said.

McLendon Looks to Beat Defenders, Injuries

POSTED: 2:34 pm EDT August 20, 2004
UPDATED: 2:54 pm EDT August 20, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. -- T.A. McLendon beats linebackers to the corner, runs over safeties in the open field and finds a way to get to the end zone.

He hasn't had the same success avoiding injuries.

The bruising back has been the battering ram of North Carolina State's high-flying offense, but has missed five games in his career with injuries. Four of those came last year, when his rushing totals and touchdowns dropped significantly.

McClendon would love to stay healthy for his junior season, but he's prepared to play hurt.

"If I'm out there playing and I'm dinged up, I'm out there because I want to be out there and I want to help my team win," McLendon said. "If I come off the field and my shoulder hurts, but we won that game by one point or two points, I'm happy."

McLendon has already been hampered during preseason workouts. He injured a hamstring last week and has missed several workouts since, relegating him to light jogging and watching several drills from the sideline.

Not that coach Chuck Amato needs to see a lot of McLendon before the Sept. 4 opener against Richmond.

"I know what he can do," Amato said, "and he's been awesome."

The 5-foot-11, 225-pound tailback is the perfect complement to the Wolfpack's passing attack. His importance is obvious; N.C. State is 7-0 when McLendon rushes for more than 100 yards.

"He brings that power," wide receiver Tramain Hall said. "If it's third-and-1, you hand it off to him, he's going to get it. Teams respect that. They back up off us and that allows the receivers to make plays."

McLendon rushed for 1,101 yards and a school single-season record of 18 touchdowns as a freshman. But last year, McLendon missed games due to ailments that included a strained patella tendon and a strained hamstring. He also had a torn meniscus that required two arthroscopic knee surgeries.

McLendon finished with 608 rushing yards with nine touchdowns in nine games. He also had two receiving scores.

McLendon said he's progressing from his latest injury.

"It's getting better every day," he said this week. "I do what I can and pretty much just get mental reps on everything else."

McLendon built an impressive resume before arriving in Raleigh. He set a national prep record at Albemarle for career touchdowns (178) and season TDs (71). His last prep carry was a 64-yard scoring run in the Class 1-AA state championship game, capping a 289-yard, seven-TD performance.

He didn't need long to make his mark in college. In his fourth college game, he rushed for 150 yards and five touchdowns in a win against Texas Tech.

McLendon can't describe exactly what goes through his mind when he spots an opening.

"It's like a sudden thing," he said. "When you see a big hole out here, your eyes light up. They get as big as ever. You just do what you do best."

Now, as he prepares for his third year at N.C. State, McLendon said he is looking for more than just individual rushing yards and touchdowns.

"I feel that we are going to have a good year," he said. "Not me, but we as a team."

SEC, ACC To Review Tapes Of Clemson-South Carolina Fight

POSTED: 7:48 am EST November 22, 2004

CLEMSON, S.C. -- The Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference will review tapes of the fight that broke out in the fourth quarter of the Clemson-South Carolina game before deciding on penalties.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive and ACC commissioner John Swofford both issued releases on Sunday. Slive said he expected to have a decision by Monday.

"There is no place in intercollegiate athletics for this kind of conduct and no excuse for it, rivalries not withstanding," Slive said. "This conduct runs counter to everything we value in athletics and will not be tolerated."

The Tigers and Gamecocks had a brief confrontation before Saturday's game and throughout officials had to quell small skirmishes and separate players.

The brawl broke out with 5:48 to go. It started when Tigers defensive lineman Bobby Williamson took down South Carolina quarterback Syvelle Newton and appeared to linger too long on top of him.

South Carolina offensive lineman Chris White came to help Newton. White's teammates Na'shan Goddard and Jabari Levey went after Williamson. Tigers Cory Groover, Donnell Clark and Gaines Adams joined in and the chaos began as both sidelines cleared.

South Carolina's Lou Holtz, coaching his last game with the Gamecocks, and Clemson coach Tommy Bowden sprinted to the center of the melee to try and break things up. Eventually, security and police officers were needed to restore order.

Clemson went on the to win the game 29-7.

Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips said Sunday he was working with the ACC to determine whether players could face discipline.

Holtz said he would meet with South Carolina athletic director Mike McGee along with other school administrators and take immediate action against those responsible.

"When players make a decision to run out on the field, there are going to be repercussions from those decisions," Holtz said.

Does anyone else think this is a major mistake? He is an excellent back, WHEN he is healthy. I think the pros will be hesitant to take him because of his injury track record and his inability to put away the ball and protect it. Regardless of what happens, I wish him well and thank him for all the good he did for the Pack.

Wolfpack's McLendon To Enter NFL Draft

POSTED: 4:54 pm EST December 13, 2004
UPDATED: 4:59 pm EST December 13, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Wolfpack junior running back T.A. McLendon has announced that he will not return for his senior season, but will instead enter the NFL draft.

"I have enjoyed my time at N.C. State and have a great relationship with Coach Amato and the other coaches," McLendon said. "But I have a family to take care of and I've decided that it is time for me to start thinking about my future."

"We certainly wish T.A. the best," said Wolfpack head coach Chuck Amato. "He is a very talented player and we hope he has great success."

The Albemarle, N.C., native rushed for 33 touchdowns in his three years at N.C. State, the third-best mark in school history. He scored 35 total touchdowns, which also ranks third among all-time Wolfpack players.

McLendon finished his collegiate career with 2,479 yards, the eighth-best mark in school history.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Simply stated, he thinks that he's better than he really is. He fumbles too much, he gets injured too much, and no team will waste a high draft pick on a back who has as much trouble as TA does with so many things. He'll go 3rd round or later and play special teams, if he's lucky.

But State has 2 strong RBs beind TA on the depth chart...normally I'd be torn up about a good rusher leaving, but it'll be ok.

Wolfpack Loses Another Assistant Football Coach

POSTED: 10:58 am EST December 17, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Another assistant football coach at North Carolina State is leaving.

John "Doc" Holliday, the Wolfpack's associate head coach and wide receivers coach, is joining Urban Meyer's staff at Florida. Holliday was also N.C. State's top recruiter.

Holliday's departure comes soon after that of defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, who left to take the defensive coordinator's job at Arkansas. Under Herring's guidance, the Pack finished No. 1 in the nation in total defense.

The loss of Holliday and Herring continues a trend under Coach Chuck Amato, who has lost nine assistants from the football program since he took over at N.C. State.

Herring had been in Raleigh less than a year. But Holliday was one of Amato's first hires when he took over the program in 2000. Holliday had helped the Pack sign many of its recruits from talent-rich south Florida.

Falcons Cut N.C. State's McClendon

POSTED: 8:05 am EDT July 29, 2005
UPDATED: 8:05 am EDT July 29, 2005

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The fumbling problems that plagued T-A McClendon during his days at North Carolina State have cost him his first shot at the National Football League.

The Atlanta Falcons released McClendon on Thursday after just three days of training camp.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Web site describes one instance earlier this week in which McClendon pounded the ground with his fist after fumbling in team drills, the second straight day he'd lost the ball.

McClendon, whose college career was plagued by injuries as well as fumbling, left N-C State after his junior season to become eligible for the N-F-L draft. However, McClendon was not selected.

Falcons Cut N.C. State's McClendon

T.A. stiff-armed a guy so hard the other day that he knocked him into the air and off his feet.

TA needs to go ahead and get a real job, because he'll never make it in the NFL. I can't honestly think that an NFL team is going to pay money to have someone fumble and get injured.

Going to NFL camps is better than a job at Wal-Mart right now, even if it is hopeless.

With that said, you can condition out injuries to a certain extent and teach a guy to hold on to the ball. You can't teach him to run.

From now on, instead of Tub Aristocrat McClendon (wolfweb joke, long story), I'm gonna call him TpAvel McBrendlon.

It's a shame that a running horse like TA has the fumble bug. He is so hard to bring down with those massive legs.. maybe somebody will sign him and he can turn it around.

Agree about Miami...there is no denying that Larry Coker is a great coach and recruiter, but I think his days of 10-1 and 11-0 seasons are about over. Last season, the loss at UNC, and the aftermath of that could possibly be proof.

tough loss for State ... too many penalties, and Blackman had no business being in the game for that punt return after his bell was rung. Tell you what, though ... State is going to be tough this year. They were better in every aspect (save for discipline, which, as proven, is HUGE) ...

Take just a few key mistakes and penalties away and State wins that game...easy as that. VaTech is good, but they aren't the #7 team in the nation, for sure. We had almost double their offense, which is a testament both to how effective *gasp* Jay Davis was, and how good the defense was.
Jay Davis was not spectacular...but he was very solid. He had alot of good passes in the 6-7 yard range that were right on target. He had 2 interceptions...one where his arm was hit as he threw, another in desperation, so I don't blame him for that. I don't think QB is an issue anymore.
Defense was not near as dominating as it maybe could have been, but still good. This is definitely the most well-rounded team State has had in a while, and I still think they could go far despite this loss.

I agree on everything but Davis ... I thought he was "eh." Not b/c of the two INTs, which weren't his fault, but, like you said, he only completed passes under 10 yards. He didn't make a truly good throw until the end of the game on that nice touch pass over the defender to Hall. He just has a terrible pocket presence and really forces the ball when pressured (there were three or four other passes that could've, and probably should've been, picked off). He really didn't make one game-altering play. He's serviceable, but I think the improvement was more attributed to Trestman than anything Jay did. I like the kid, but I just don't think he's all that good.

Naw, he isn't all that good. But he'll do...I think that's the important thing. He didn't really make all that many huge mistakes...and he had all of those short little passes, but that seems to be a majority of the offense...there weren't too many pass attempts longer than 10 or so yards, and I think that's a product more of Trestman's offense than of Davis's decisionmaking. He was put under some pressure, for sure, but that also isn't totally his fault.

I think we just got spoiled by Philip Rivers...Davis is a solid and unspectacular QB. But it is of note that Amato said in the postgame on the radio that his attitude was different from last year...that he was a real leader in the huddle, on the sidelines, and on the field. Amato said he was more confident than he'd ever seen him, and because of that had his best game in a State uniform. He had all of those short little passes, but thanks to the offensive scheme he had more than 300 yards passing. And he led the team all the way down the field with, what, 39 seconds to go...that was very nice to see.

Carolina was taking a lot of bad penalties!! just like the Panthers do!! ugh.....

For a team (Wisconsin) that is s'pose to be so much better than UNC, I thought UNC defence did a pretty good job.

sheesh....took FOREVER to get parked and walk a mile to the stadium...finally sit down and its time for a kickoff and they make everyone get up and go onto the concourse because of a storm coming......well it must of just missed us because after a while, they let us back out......

Yeah the refs were calling EVERYTHING in the Heels game... jeez...

They wasted a pretty decent defensive effort - no running game, and obviously Baker has a lot of work to do.

But for my first UNC game in the student section, I had an INCREDIBLE time! It was definitely a lot of fun. And I definitely lost my voice... And then there were Wisconsin fans on Franklin Street afterwards giving people crap, and there were a few exchanges, but things stayed calm.

Carolina has no unity.. I was watching their QB limping off the field, in obvious pain, after the 4th down attempt failed. Not one coach or player, gave him a slap on the rear to encourage him. He was all alone on the sidelines.. no unity usually means disaster for a team... just ask Matt Dougherty..

oh..and Go Pack!! Kick ASS this weekend! :spin:

Holy cow...what a horrible game.

When was the last time that an NC State defense was that porous against the run? They could run a sweep play and get a guaranteed 10 yards. Just ridiculous against a defense that is supposedly among the best in the nation.
Penalties...as usually, an undiciplined Amato team. There's just no excuse for giving up yards to the opposition. A few key penalties completely stopped drives for us.
Special Teams! High snaps on punts...long, long runbacks on kickoffs or punts...really destroys any momentum that you can gain when the opposition can start their drive in your territory.
Fumbles! Sheesh, due to a few key penalties, there could have been, how many, 6 fumbles for State today? Anyway, it's hard to win a game when you give UNC the ball on the 2 yard line, and then fumble again, and again, and again.
Also, Jay Davis had a few key passes towards the end that were nowhere near the receiver. Can we get somebody to take him to Lenscrafters?

Amato? Dead Man Walking...

Davis threw the ball acceptably. He just took some horrible sacks, not to mention the fumbles. I think his lack of arm strength does hinder our play selection.

I hope all of us State fans will truly appeciate how special Rivers & Cotchery were. Those days are gone....

Sacks are mostly not the QB's fault in my opinion.. if your O-line misses an assignment, unless you are an awesome scrambler, you are toast. Jay just doesn't have arm strength and he is not a good scrambler.. Philip and Jericho were awesome.. but you gotta move on.. There were seveal times today (in the endzone) where the receiver was wide open...and he just overthrew them.. :eek2: Once I saw Tremain look like WTF was that???

I can't believe there are people who still think Jay Davis is even "OK" ... like I've said since, well, forever .... he doesn't make one play. Yes, he can get the balls to his receivers/backs/TEs from time to time, but when was the last time when you thought, "Hey! Nice throw!"

Can't pin this loss on discipline, b/c UNC was way more undisciplined and less prepared than State (they don't even know how to legally line up in punt formation!?!). Plain and simple, this came down to the offense not being able to move the ball ... and since State ran the ball decently, the blame rests on the shoulders of the QB.

As for "Amato's gotta go" ... I think that's crazy. Yes, State is 1-2, but State played right with (and better than, IMO) Virginia Tech, who, in case you didn't notice today, dismantled GT and firmly planted themselves in the national title race (yes, it's early ... I know). The defense isn't as dominant as last year (Dunlap's fault ... I mean, what even happened to the zone blitz that was SO successful last year? And why did it take two quarters to bring the LBs up to help against the run? Was Dunlap worried Baker would complete his second pass of the first half?? By the time the LBs started helping, UNC had already adjusted at halftime and found ways to complete some passes. TERRIBLE coaching on the defensive side.)

For all those who think Amato should go, take a look at ECU ... what happened to them since they canned their coach that actually took the program somewhere?

Until today, I would have agreed with you. The bottom line is, Chuck needs to figure something out real fast, because he's losing the fan base.

Chuck has had some very O'Cain like results the last 2 years and that isn't going to fly when the alums pour as much money into facilities as they have.

Right now, Bunting owns Amato and that's not good for Chuck's job security.

I'll agree that the alumni aren't happy ... but i certainly don't think Bunting "owns" Amato ... it's 3 games to 2.

The fans aren't going anywhere ... that stadium is sold out for the whole season, and it's b/c of Chuck ... he got the donors excited about the program, got them to buy tickets and got them to make great improvements to the facilities.

Like I said before, two things led to this loss:\

1) Not necessarily poor coaching, but definitely a downgrade, at defensive coordinator.

2) Quarterback

Don't count out Marcus Stone .. everyone forgets he's still just a redshirt sophomore.

For the sake of Wolfpack Nation, I hope you're right. I am less optimistic in the benevolence of my fellow alumni.

I was just reading *One L of a Season* thread and you said this a while back....

That is so sad... I won't complain about my Pack again.

ok.. I am busted... :p :p seeing it live just made it worse.. if I had been watching on tv, I would have changed the channel and checked back.. I was begging the special teams to do something so they could score.. I knew the offense couldn't!!

Marcus Stone has a cannon for an arm...and a cavern for a brain. Ugh.

The last time I thought "nice throw" with Jay was twice during the VT game. With that said, they weren't Philip-caliber "nice throws" by any stretch of the imagination.

My problem with Chuck at this point is quite simple: the players obviously don't listen to him, and he has no control over them. If they did, the penalties would've disappeared by now. If he did, the players who keep taking stupid penalties would be on the bench. Chuck needs to take some lessons on discipline from Herb (Bennerman's transformation on defense comes to mind).

I know the alumni support is all that really matters to the school, but I can tell you that student support for Chuck is very, VERY low right now.

The problem is, however sad it is to say, it takes the big-time donors raising a ruckus to cause a problem like that. Right now, Chuck has their support.

Two words: Norm Chow.

State should not have let that man go.
