Thought I'd start a place for reports from practices, etc.
The Canes have ice time reserved at the RecZone beginning today, so those who are hockey starved can get a glimpse of the handful of players who venture out for some ice time.
(This is also a hint for those that were so inclined to stop by -- share a little with the rest of us. ;))

Well Crap. I was in meetings this morning, thinking about JA- and thinking there was 'something' Canes related that I hadn't written on my daytimer, and sure enough, here it is.............. darn it. I am just-up-the-street from the RZ and can easily step out and take a peek at who may or may not be over there. Arggh.
I'll go check it out the rest of the week before I head off to Team USA Training Camp in Columbus....
Maybe Mona or SHC or others??? stopped by? (ahem.....) :spin:

I think it would be interesting to see if any of the Canes are there.
Not a chance for me to get anywhere near the RZ this week

Amanda, myself and 4 other "hockey starved" folks made it over today.. the only two there were O and Brindy... Bubba was in goal.. They got off the ice around 11 or maybe a little before.. They just basically shot the puck at Bubba.. at least it was Canes on the ice.. **sigh**

Well I knew it would be you! Sigh**** ;) I didnt' expect more than a couple of people to practice, and I was sure Brindy would at least be there! Maybe it'll be like last year when we saw a EC out there, then Boogie and Brindy, and each day more and more people were coming and then it was training camp! (OK, this year is a little different, but I hold out HOPE. :)

Today was sooo much fun. I only stayed for an hour... because of that thing called work..but it was like old times today. Let's see.... Brindy, O, Erik, Jesse, JD, Bubba (he gave us a wave) and brace yourselves...CHOPPER!! O was feeling his oats today, so he said hi to us when he skated out.. and then proceeded to call Chopper "Chop Daddy".. we all laughed. Lots of puck shooting and when I left they were playing a game.. it was great to see them!! **happy sigh** :nanner: :nanner:
O's#1 sat with us.. great to meet you.. and hope I didn't embarass you too much with my loud laughter.. :D

Cool...glad to know that more Canes showed up. If I don't get to go to any practices later this week, I should definitely be able to go next week. :spin:

^^ :D He was acting like a baby today. he was like "our puck..our puck".. and then he was making up the rules as he went along..and after he left the ice, Brindy did the same thing. He was funny.. and I have to pass along a little tidbit about Jesse B.. he is sporting a "Dany Heatley" hairdo.. lot of curls hanging out of that helmet.. it looks good on HIM though! ;)

Then why don't you tell everyone how "Chop Daddy" hit the floor by himself? http://www.tridead.net/canes/images/smilies/chairfall.gif That was sooooo hilarious. Too bad he didn't get the hattrick.
Jesse looks great with his "Heatley" hair. I could've sworn he looked like Bruno before he skated by.

it was a nice practice today. shooting drills to begin with, and then the 3-on-3 (or should i say 3-on-2+) scrimmage. brindy, jesse, and chopper vs. jeff, erik, and JD. very entertaining to say the least...;)
it was nice meeting you, J.
oh, and we saw coach lavi as well... (practice was over by then)

Well now I'm just sick. I had totally planned to go today, but, yepper, the little thing called work just wrecked my daytimer to death  I'm going to have my assistant clear my calendar for the rest of the week! ;) At least during practice time LOL.
I had a feeling that the Jesse and EC would be there- surprised that KA wasn't there as I heard him on 850 a couple weeks back and he said he'd be back in town 'next week' which woulda been last week. Anyhoooo..... thanks Mona for the Jesse tidbit- I for one am a huge Heatley fan, and I think it's because of that wild hairdo. I guess us curly tops have to stick together or something eh? :spin:
Now I'm off to clear my calendar, uh, 'rearrange my schedule' :D Thanks for the great update Mona!

No they were bringing it.. Brindy is serious all the time.. trust me.. and he didn't get to many in. O couldn't score on him either and he had some blazing shots.. JD scored the most.. maybe Bubba was just taking it easy on the "retired guy".. at one point when JD kept scoring, O yelled "come out of retirement".. Erik is very rusty.... he needs to leave the diaper changing to Emily and hit the ice.. **runs from Emily very fast**

I got to attend practice yesterday and saw Stormbringer with her Ronnie card collection and went through that in awe of how extensive it was, and she was dressed so professionally on her way to the RBC job fair! I was passing time before visiting canezilla (and he looked great!)
Out on the ice were McCarthy, Daniels, O'Neill, Kevyn Adams, Jesse Boulerice, Glenn Wesley, Rod Brind'amour, and Ryan Bayda. Bubba in net and on the opposite side the sideways net goalie. Shooting drills, Passing and shooting drills, then some four on four which was pretty fun to watch, O'Neill talking it up and looking confident on the ice and really looked healthy. Bayda fast as ever. They went full out and Rod hit the ice once and didn't get up after a minute then skated it off and looked good, Wesley almost got hit in the face with the puck a few times. After that some conditioning skating then they were done.
During the breaks there was some CBA banter and Kevyn was explaining things to the other players and where they stand since he's the Hurricanes player rep to the NHLPA. The questions were pretty interesting and it was so empty in there that you could hear them talk pretty clearly. Some talk about Kevin Weekes and how the Rangers, "don't even have any team functions" as well. I'm not going to any more practices this preseason because they just tease you into getting excited that there's going to be a season next year.

Why, thank you Arthur! :) I brought my card collection AND the box I'm designing for it in to show to a friend who never showed up. But, it was great getting to show all of that to you Arthur. :)
It was fun getting to see the Canes practice right before the job fair...I just hope I can see them do more past September 15th. (sighs)
Unless something comes up, I will be returning this Friday...hope to see more of you. :)

Was there today...JD and O weren't there. Besides Bubba, there was another goalie, the one who plays for State's hockey team. The guys did a lot of shooting and breakaway practice today, putting on quite a show. And though they were getting pounded, the goalies had some good saves here and there.
I managed to get some souvenirs in the form of a puck flipped over by Bayda and some Ronnie cards from a friend. :spin:

JD is Jeff Daniels. Use to be a player, now an assistant coach. Bubba is Bubba. what can I say - unofficial backup goaltender, goalie helmet making and launderer of fine washibles - among other things.

sigh i miss hockey

Nice to see some players on the ice! Some looked pretty winded by the time it was done.
Mr Staal was sporting a little scruf on his chin. Guess he's growing up. It was kind of sad thinking he might be the only player (of those that were at the RZ) really training in a week or so.

long hair and a goatee? Oooh sounds like Justin Williams' plan to 'bring the long hair look to the Canes' (his words) has rubbed off eh?
I thought the long hair on Staal showed how young he was/is- (ok he's a kid, I know) I guess I'm showing my age by wanting his hair to be short LOL- but this (the goatee) I've gotta see. :D
I've resisted the 1 mile drive from my office to the RZ which has stunned everyone who knows me in some sort of 'mild protest' (to whom I do not know  ) what with all that is going on or should I say not going on with the CBA- but darn it, I'm gonna be there on Friday for sure. When he was was at Rookie Camp, he had these beautiful long strawberry, blonde curls... and it made him look cute and about 12 years old..
LOL, LOL, Mona, I remember standing pressed up against the glass eager to get that first look of the Kid at the Reczone and turning to hubby when he came out on the ice and saying 'he looks like he's about 10 years old'! ;) sooooo young I remember and then I said something like 'he didn't look that young in Nashville' and hubby, who clearly has inherited my sarcastic tendencies in 11 years of marriage, says "oh yeah, cause when we saw him at the draft 2 months ago, that was like forever...." he had all the others standing around with us, pretty much cracking up.. hee hee.
I'm guessing he's attempting to 'look' older, in the vein of Rick Nash, (who was fooling nobody with that round baby face and goatee he was sporting all of last year - (was still sporting it in Columbus when we spotted him at Team USA camp) in his attempt to look older.
These poor young 'uns they are so scrutinized - hard to grow up in front of a bunch of people eh?......
OK back to topic...

Sounds like way too much fun- I'm so ticked I missed it; again, this thing called work prevents me from driving a mile from my office after I totally planned to be there  Typical Monday office b-s that could have been handled by somebody I'm paying to handle their job. Ok, I'm getting testy.
Glad you guys had fun- Bret in an Irbe helmet is too funny.
Staal put three moves on Jorge Alves (NC State goalie) from the circles in and was VERY upset when Jorgie stopped him
Poor kid- this Jorge dude is doin' alright for himself out there- he stopped some good one's on Friday too-
Stormbringer- sounds like you had a blast at practice! Hope you're there Wed.
I'm hoping Wednesday's practice will be as upbeat- although it will be 9/15, and I wonder what the mood will be....

The chances he had were plentiful and the fact he didn't even realize the puck was near him until it had passed was priceless. I haven't laughed that hard in a while, and being with Mona made it that much funnier. :D
Mona, I don't know if you heard, but when O scored the winner in the third game, he dedicated it to you :D .

I've been trying to figure that out. So, it expires Tuesday night (techinically Wednesday morning) at 12:01? Or Wednesday night (techinically Thursday morning) at 12:01? I've seen it written in articles both ways so I can't figure out which it is!!

it expires at 12:01 Thursday morning. It runs through 9/15/04 and the owners will have a press conference on Wednesday morning to announce the inevitable which will begin when Wednesday ends (at least that's how I read it).
but then again:
A decade-long dispute between owners and players is ticking down to its final hours. The National Hockey League and its players have until midnight Tuesday to resolve their labor dispute and avoid what could be a long and damaging work stoppage unlike anything the league has experienced in its 87-year history.
maybe if there is no agreement by Wednesday, it will be announced and go into effect on Thursday at 12:01. Wednesday, Thursday, unfortunately 24 hours doesn't seem to matter

see i had seen 12:01 on the 15th! or the author was a dumb ass and thought 1201 wednesday night not thinking the 16th... ill ask phil see if he knows.
ok from the CBA itself
This Agreement is effective retroactive to September 16, 1993, and shall remain in full force and effect until midnight on the 15th day of September, 2004, and shall remain in effect from year to year thereafter unless and until either party shall furnish the other a written notice of termination of this Agreement 120 days prior to the 15th day of September, 2004 or not less than a like period in any year thereafter. so it expires right after 23:59:59 of sept 15? or expires at 00:00:00 of the 15th?

I was wondering, if the players pay for their own ice time, does the lockout mean they are locked out of their lockerroom too and their equipment? Does that mean they have to bring their own skates and jersies without the canes logo? Does that mean they use the general all use lockerrooms instead of their nice ones provided by the team? THAT would be interesting

it has nothing to do with JR's feelings toward the players. that's the rules of the game the players and owners have chosen to play (or not to play). no one is going to keep them from working out. they have to pay to use the ice (as I understand it) and no access to anything team related. they all understood the way it would be if this was the path they all chose so everyone has to live with it, including the fans who are being squeezed from both sides.

and who pays for it? PK? Not likely when the PA is refusing to play.
Ice time costs money. equipment costs money. everything costs money. the owner can't be expected to foot the bill just to keep his guys in shape just Incase there's a season.

I don't think it's as bad as it sounds. These guys have exercise rooms in their own houses so they'll be able to keep up the workouts. The younger fellas will probably be invited if they don't have home equipment. They just won't get "skating" time per say but I'm sure they will manage that too.

friday at practice we were told ice time cost 200 an hour... Brindy can afford it, Cole can aford it, KAdams can afford it, Glen Wesley can afford it, O cant afford a pack.
The funds for the equipment and ice time isnt the problem. The problem is not having Wally to take care of their equipment.

the problem is the equipment (hockey and workout) belong to the team. no owner is going to let them use team equipment. I sure it's actually in writing. since neither side is willing to fish, they all get to sit around and cut bait.

it doesn't belong to them. it belongs to the owner(s). therefore it's used as an incentive.

Well, if this is how the 'end' is, then I guess I can be consoled....
Mona played photo girl and took pics of me with EC, Kevyn, Bruno (yes, he was there!) Jesse (sigh) and the nicest person around, Bret Hedican, who accidently hit me with the door and apologized about a hundred times because he thought I was hurt. (I'm not- he's just too nice for words)
I missed out on Eric Staal because he had quite the crowd around him- and all the players seemed to come out at the same time; he scored 2 hat tricks during practice (I think it was more but we lost track because we were yacking ;) )
It was nice of Kevyn to say "Thanks for sticking with us, the guys and I hope you'll still be with us whenever we get this resolved"..................
It is just so sobering to know, that this is it. All fun and pictures aside, it's just not gonna be the same for a very long time..................... and that just makes me mad.....................

Surely someone here at lgc was among the 8 spectators???
By LUKE DECOCK, Staff Writer
RALEIGH -- Over the first three days of the Carolina Hurricanes' training camp last year, the team sold 226 programs to fans who packed the RecZone for practices.
Monday, on what would have been the third day of this year's training camp, the business prospects were not as good. There were only eight fans at the RecZone to watch nine Carolina players, one ex-Carolina player and two emergency goalies in the first unofficial skate for the Canes players of the NHL lockout.
Normally, the stands in the RecZone are packed, with fans lining the glass as well. But Suzanne Ward and her daughter Abby, 10, had the stands to themselves Monday. The four-member Ward family attended about 20 Carolina games last season and a few RecZone practices as well.
"We don't usually show up on the weekends because it's too crowded," Suzanne Ward said. "I'm surprised, especially knowing that you might not get to see these guys for who knows how long."
A few other fans stood along the boards, but for the most part the Hurricanes skated in relative anonymity, the forgotten season officially under way. Even their logos were hidden, their practice jerseys turned inside-out in mute protest of the lockout. With no dialogue between owners and players, nothing will change soon. There are no talks scheduled at this point.
The players say they plan to keep skating as long as there are enough of them interested in chipping in $20 each for ice time. But those numbers could dwindle quickly from the dozen who skated Monday, a group which included Rod Brind'Amour, Kevyn Adams, Erik Cole, Bret Hedican, Glen Wesley, Jeff O'Neill, Jesse Boulerice, Eric Staal, Ryan Bayda and ex-Canes player Bates Battaglia.
Staal and Bayda left for Lowell, Mass., and the minor leagues Monday afternoon, while Cole said he's now looking to play in Europe despite having a 2-month-old at home. Even if former Hurricanes Sean Hill and Ron Francis join in -- Hill stopped by the rink Monday to check out the scene -- it wouldn't take many defections for the group to dwindle.
On Monday, the players scrimmaged for 90 minutes before changing in the public locker rooms instead of the Hurricanes' complex at the other end of the building. In that complex, Canes equipment manager Wally Tatomir sat by himself in his office at the rink, answering e-mail messages and making phone calls instead of watching practice.
"It's days like these you realize how spoiled you are," O'Neill said. "The trainers are a big part of our lives. They take good care of us, and when they're not around, we're on our own."
Instead of having a bucket of logo pucks to play with, the players used pucks they found at the rink. And with no one to store their gear and wash it, they hauled it out to their cars themselves, taking it home to wash.
"There's nothing new about paying for ice and skating with a few guys, because this is what you do when you're home in the summer," Cole said.
Except this isn't summer. It's hockey season, or it should be. Instead, all fans have to look forward to is a long, cold war and a longer, colder winter without hockey.

Yeah, it was written rather awkwardly, but I think he was implying that eventually there might not be enough guys to scrimmage. But I was thinking the same thing at first...20 bucks!?!?
B) You know what Cole? Go *&$# yourself! I've about had enough of him. Yeah, he's really going to Europe with a 2 month old. Whatever. I'd like to kick his little behind a few times.
 I think he must have rec'd the NHLPA memo that says they like it better if you threaten to go play in Europe. I thought it made perfect sense that he wasn't going to go anywhere until January, as he mentioned previously.
Surprised that Bates hasn't yet gone to Europe though.

Surely someone here at lgc was among the 8 spectators???
Since I had been gone and had so much to catch up on, I couldn't make it yesterday- I was this close, but just couldn't get outta here- That article just reminded me of all of people who were there this time last year- pressed up against the glass trying to get a glimpse of the Kid and all his new team mates- and I clearly remember one of the marketing guys just walking up and down the aisles selling those 'programs'. UGH, now I'm getting pissed.

That boy has literally drunk the NHLPA Kool-Aid- he just never quits with this nonsense. I feel the same SHC, I wanna kick his behind. He comes off in the most unflattering way with all this talk. I got my pic snapped with him on Wednesday or should I call it BLACK WEDNESDAY by our lovely Mona, and he was just the nicest guy. But then Jekyll comes out and he becomes the puppet for the NHLPA.

My brother was a union rep for the phone company ... it's just how you have to be.

It's how they want you to be. KAdams has managed to speak on the topic w/o sounding like a boob, and he's the Canes rep as well.
Speaking of KAdams, someone posted at fanhome that he was the only player that didn't turn his sweater inside out during the on ice session.

I didn't make it yesterday.. but I did see O on the news asking if that was where he paid.. I had to get a little chuckle out of that..
Bates is probably content to stay here and run the restaurant once it opens.. ;)
Erik needs to cool it so he doesn't piss everyone off.. **sigh**

Haha, I saw that too. My phone was ringing off the hook with family and friends wondering if I had been watching.
He was also on the 11 o'clock talking about how weird it was since none of them had to go through anything like this before.
I was surprised to read that Bates was there. The article said a former Cane, so I totally assumed it was Ronnie.
