Ok, my cousin and I are having an arguement about who the better guitarist is...Eric Clapton or Jimi Hendrix. I say Clapton, he says Hendrix, and I just wanna know what y'all think (and potentially have something to rub in his face). ;)

Eric Clapton is an awesomely talented musician and guitarist...the likes of which we may never see again. Hendrix was good, but I don't think he beats Clapton.

I heart both Eric and Jimi, but I would give the edge to Clapton. He of course has the longer career. Not to mention how he is *very* versatile, having done psychedelic blues (his work with Cream), session work (his collaborations with George Harrison), supergroup (his work with Blind Faith), good old rock and roll, reggae (his 70's output in general), pop/adult contemporary (some of his 70's output and especially his 80's output), regular blues (From the Cradle and his collaborations with B.B. King), and even some country (I don't know about anyone else, but IMO, "Running On Faith" is a rather country-ish tune). Also, unlike Hendrix, Clapton has put out some very decent live albums...my favorites being 24 Nights (absolutely ADORE the version of "Wonderful Tonight" on that), Unplugged (featuring the aforemention "country version" of "Running...") and One More Car, One More Rider (the BEST version of "Sunshine of Your Love" in on this).

Jimi Hendrix may have been a better guitarist...but the problem is, his career was so limited, especially when you compare it to the longevity of Clapton. I have never seen Jimi Hendrix perform, he died before I was born. A guy like Clapton has had so long to master his craft and show his talent to the world, and Hendrix was just getting started. What Hendrix could have ended up as is the greatest ever, but we'll never really be able to say, definitively, if he was better or not as good as Clapton.

And I'll have to agree, One More Car, One More Rider is an absolutely awesome concert. :spin:

Well I think Clapton is probaly a better player, but Hendrix was more entertaining!

Both are far from the best ever though....

can longevity really come into when one of them dies? It's not like Hendrix was started making bad music and slipped into obscurity. Regardless, this is a tough one. Clapton may be a better guitarist, but I think Hendrix was more influencial.

If he we really want to talk guitar players, how about Steve Vai? I swear he has seven fingers on each hand.

Or Steve Kimmock...Jimi will always be #1 to me though. His career was cut tradgically short and while he had a limited amount of major record label albums he turned out tons of music that wasn't/isn't released in his Electricladyland studio/label. I'll admit some of what he recorded there wasn't the best but some of what they've released is just magical.

Sorry, I can't vote for either. EDDIE VAN HALEN all the way.

You'll be delighted to know that a few years ago, when 106.1 WRDU used to be a decent classic rock station, they did a Best Guitarist Contest one weekend. And Eddie Van Halen won, beating out either David Gilmour or Jimmy Page. Which was rather amazing, considering that the rule of thumb with WRDU, even when it was a good station, was that anything or anyone having to do with Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin is bound to win their "best" contests. *Classic* example of this rule of thumb is the Best Band contest they have or had at either the end of the year or March (to celebrate the NCAA hoops tourney). I don't think I can remember a band other than Floyd or Zeppelin winning that thing. And I seem to recall that more often than not, Floyd and Zeppelin were the final two bands.

Steve is a good one.. I remember when he was with David Lee Roth I thought he was wasting his time.. haven't seen him around in a while..

They had a Steve Vai concert on VH1 Classic back in June...incredible dude and performance. Especially dug the covers Vai did of Hendrix's "Stone Free" and "Little Wing".

I know he was in a band call "Vai" a few years back. He left the singing to someone else, I believe.

Actually Mr. Slow hand is Robert Cray in my opinion.

Jimi over Clapton. Clapton is good but I think Jimi was better.

I'd rate Jimi, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Joe Satriani as my top 3.

My father is a big Eric Clapton fan, but I think Jimi had more style.

Personally, I like sound over proficiency ~ if the music is distinctive and it speaks to me, then I don't care if the guitarist can't run frets. I like Edge ( from U2 ) because he's innovative ( and he knows he's limited ).

Jimi was amazing. He was playing stuff in nightclubs off the Beatles Sgt. Pepper album the weekend it was released. Paul McCartney himself witnessed it and was flabbergasted in amazement as well as feeling very honored.

Eric is great and I love Stevie Ray Vaughn's playing the best. But that's blues rock, there are other great players in other genres like Jazz or Bluegrass, too.

Rock on... :D
