It has to be the adrenaline and excitement generated watching sudden death overtime. Last night's game between Anaheim and Detroit(two teams who I could care less about) ahd me sitting up in the bed and inching closer to the TV with each shift.Knowing that a team can be utterly manhandled for 2 plus periods of OT and still win because of a stellar performance by a goalie is why the Stanley Cup Playoffs are the second greatest spectacle on earth.(Number 1 is the NCAA Tourney.) Here's hoping that many more games go into overtime in the near future.

Good post! Earlier yesterday I was remembering just how great OT in the playoffs is and wondering when I was going to get to see the first OT NHL playoff game of the season! I didn't have to wait long.....but I never could have predicted it could have been that exciting! That was a classic all the way through. I love seeing a goalie makes saves like that to keep his underdog team in it!
Though I do have to disagree with you on one aspect of your post. I think the NHL Playoffs are the greatest spectacle on earth. Sorry NCAA.

The only reason I put the NCAA above the NHL is the one and done aspect. As great as last night's game was, Detroit still lives for another day. Now nothing beats a Game 7 overtime thriller. MATTEAU MATTEAU MATTEAU(Rangers-Devils Game 7 eastern Conference Finals 1994)

Hehe, well ya know, I was just going with Jillsdad's theme there.
:D
The greatest spectacle on earth would probably be 400 elephants all standing on top of each other's shoulders and forming one gigantic pyramid while all juggling 3 bowling pins each with their trunk and singing "I'd Like To Buy The World A Coke".
But my vote for the greatest sports spectacle on earth goes to the NHL Playoffs.
Hmmm Turbulence, haven't caught a national spelling bee yet. Can't wait though! :)

Don't worry....If it was on ESPN last year I'm sure it'll be on ESPN this year.....
How is that sports? But I digress.
I agree...there is nothing that can compare to 3rd overtime hockey in the Stanley Cup playoffs...
How can you beat quadruple overtime in game 7 of the finals? Quintuple OT. I can wish...

I KNOW!!! RIVETING!!! :eek2:
Seriously though, I really dig the excitement of watching all the teams playing it up a level. Lots of action. Lots of surprises. I cheer for teams and people that I never thought would impress me, or I find myself disappointed with those I usually cheer for. It's like turning on the radio and listening to random songs. It's so un-pre-recorded, and I love it!! :D
