Who are you voting for in November (and who WOULD you vote for, if you aren't old enough to register?)

I'm part of the not-old-enough crowd (but I still think I'm more informed than alot of voters out there :D) but my vote is for Kerry/Edwards.

This country needs change, and 4 more years of Bush/Cheney will certainly not bring that.

I'm still vascillation but leaning towards Kerry. I saw a political cartoon that pretty much summed up my feelings about the upcoming presidential election.

Picture a Jeopardy game with the three contestants being Bush (Dubya), Kerry (John) and Nadar (Ralph)

Dubya- "I'll take fear and division for everything I"m worth"

John -"I'll select lengthy and somtimes contradictory platitudes for an unspecific yet substantial denomination"

How about "none of the above?"

Probably the most important election in my voting life, imo.

And that is because of the Supreme Court Justices. It's fairly balanced right now. But, several are going to retire. Have said that they're going to retire. Bush is already wiping his arse with the Constitution. If he gets to replace a few more Justices, there is no balance. he can set that court up however the hell he wants. sure, if Kerry wins, he will be the one to set the court. But at this point, I'll take that over Dubya's Anti-Rights crap anyday.

I don't want to turn this into something big, because that's why we have a Poli-forum. Suffice it to say, I'm sorry I'm in such a Republican voting state... but I ain't one of em.

On Tuesday I was exciting because Kate Edwards, Alex and Vanessa Kerry, and Andre Heinz stopped by the school and talked a bit about what their fathers would do. It was really exciting for me since this is my first election. I've been dead set on voting against Bush since 2000. That's me.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

IMO, almost any election (as long as we have a two party system) is about picking the lesser of two evils. Very few decent people want to be, or even could be, president. I don't love John Kerry but I don't know where this country might end up if we re-elect George Bush.

I know people think I'm paranoid, and I know I've thought other people who have said stuff like this in the past were paranoid, but I'm telling you, if you love our Constitution and the ideals this country was founded on you have to think long and hard about who you are voting for in this election. Bush has proven he's willing to trample the Constitution and I'm not willing to let him.

You may think there are not enough differences between the two parties and in the past I might have agreed with you.....but not this time. One party believes they are the supreme power in this country and the Constitution comes second. The other party has actually read the Constitution and knows that the tenth amendment clearly states that powers are delegated to the government BY the Constitution. The Constitution is the supreme power in this country and no one should ever forget it.

OK, I'll stop now.

I'm not discussing who I'll vote for, but I just want everyone of voting age to register, get informed and vote. I am sick to death of political ads, political conventions, and politicians in general, but I'm not missing out on my chance to have my say in the matter! My personal credo is "if you don't vote, you've given up your right to ***** for 4 years" and I'd explode so I vote :D (exceptions made for the underage crowd!)

People died so we can vote. People in other countries who don't have the freedom to vote line up for hours and hours once given the right. It annoys me no end that people in this country are too lazy to get informed and vote their conscience even if it means standing in line for a while.

i agree... some study found that over half the people said their primary news source for politicians is "Weekend update" on SNL. The daily show with Jon Stewart came in second. Sad aint it? but thats the extent im going to discuss in this thread... not here to get politcal

Guess I'll vote bush since he's republican. I'm not saying I like bush, I just don't like John Kerry. Then again, whos the 3rd party? Darth Vader? The republican party just seems to side with more of the issues that I have feelings about. I don't like everything about either party though, why can't their be a middle of the road party?

I'm a registered Republican, but will not be voting for Bush. While fiscally I agree with the Republican platform, I am much more Democrat in my social values. Two issues finally pushed me more the edge in regards to Bush:

1) Iraq — not the actual action taken there, but the stubborness exhibited. I feel that no matter what happened, Bush could never admit he made a mistake or that things aren't going well.

2) Gay marriage — the issue itself is up for debate, but bringing it up during a campaign to shift attention from mistakes the administration has made to rally ultra-conservatives is a low blow. I believe in gay rights and that they should have the right to wed, get spousal insurance, ect., but the debate would never be a deal breaker for me. But to propose something as absurd as a Constitutional amendment against gay marriage in a time when our govt. has MUCH more important things to handle is unforgivable. The thing that really bothered me was not that it was mentioned, but that there's no way, in this day and age, it would be passed through our checks and balances — so the only reason it would be used as an issue is to rally more people to the religious right front. It makes me trmeble just thinking about it.

As for Kerry ...I grew up in Massachusetts and personally think he was a useless senator. I don't know that I'll vote for him either, but at least he doesn't make me pull my hair out.

A little something for evryone to read ... this also swayed my feeling on the election. From Australian novelist Max Barry (of NationStates fame :)):

There’s no question in my mind that George W. Bush has been great for democracy. Previously, a lot of people were becoming disillusioned with mainstream politics, frustrated at having to choose between one corporate-backed rich white guy with good hair and another, slightly different-looking corporate-backed rich white guy with good hair. The feeling was: “What difference does it make if I vote? They’re all the same. What will one guy do that the other won’t?”

Thanks to Bush, now we know. He’s like a walking object lesson in the importance of voter turnout.

I’m Australian, but one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen was a rally outside City Hall in New York in 1999 to protest the police shooting of Amandou Diallo. Thousands of people voicing their grief and outrage… all quietly and competently supervised by the target of their protest, the NYPD. In plenty of countries, the cops would have been beating the crap out of those protestors. In the others, the protesters would have been throwing rocks at the cops and setting their cruisers on fire. But not in the United States. It was, to me, not just impressive but almost magical.

Then there was September 11. In the aftermath, there was a global outpouring of grief and sympathy for Americans—and more than that, of allegiance. If you lived in the US, you might not have noticed this. Your attention was, of course, focused inward. But it was there, and it was extraordinary. It was overwhelming. What I heard over and over was, “Today, we are all Americans.” Throughout the world, people wanted to stand by the US.

I wonder now what might have happened if the war on terrorism had chiefly been a diplomatic one. If the Bush administration had defined what terrorism was and called the world together to expunge it—not just in one country or two, but globally, and no matter in which cause it was employed. In 2001, with that incredible worldwide feeling of unity… maybe it was possible to take that act of great evil and extract from it a great good.

But it’s not possible now. That global unity is gone, and in its place is cynicism and mistrust. It happened because George W. Bush told the world it was irrelevant. As the war on terrorism morphed into an invasion of Iraq, Bush and his administration said it again and again: “You either agree with us or you are meaningless.” Maybe it was ignorance of the importance of international diplomacy. Maybe it was arrogance. Maybe it was even realistic. But one thing’s for sure: the world had offered its hand in solidarity and it didn’t like having it slapped away.

Opinion of the US has fallen so low that America is now widely viewed as the greatest threat to world peace—not just by people in “Axis of Evil” countries, or Muslim countries, but by majority populations in Western countries, like Australia, that are staunch US allies and have troops in Iraq right now. That sounds absurd if you live in the States, I know. But to understand it, imagine you don’t. Imagine it’s China that has more military power than the next 20 countries plus yours combined; China’s new government that rapidly cancels international treaties on everything from anti-missile proliferation to global warming; that announces it has no use nor care for world opinion; that conquers two countries in two years and hints of more to come; China that says other countries must choose to either support it without question or be “with the terrorists;” and China’s new President who describes entire nations as “evil” and his country’s military operations in religious terms.

I hate how the US is viewed by the world today. America is a truly great country, and doesn’t deserve to be considered deceitful, dangerous, arrogant, and greedy. But it is, because in the eyes of the world, George W. Bush is the US. It’s not as if we foreigners watch CNN. All we know about American politics is who’s President and how many bombs he’s dropping on other countries.

Which is why I hope like hell that John Kerry wins the election this November. If he does, people around the world won’t know it had anything to do with who had the better service record, or was more credible on jobs. But they’ll think, “Maybe Americans didn’t agree with Bush after all.” They’ll think, “Maybe they’re not all like him.” They’ll think, “Maybe we can stand together again.”

I'm so not in love with John Kerry either. Howard Dean was by leaps and freakin' bounds my candidate of choice for the democratic nomination. But, everyone should realize that any vote for anyone other than Kerry or any non-vote amounts to a vote FOR George W Bush. I hate that it's this way and I hope to see it change very soon, but right now there is no viable third party candidate. And if you really believe Bush is bad for America you really have to vote for Kerry. It's the only way we can get him out of there. That Max Barry piece is the most brilliant bit of political writing I have read in a long time ... I've never been so moved and inspired by something so simple. What he has to say is very scary and eye-opening.

I am close to a vote for Kerry ... it's tough for me to cast that vote b/c I really don't like what he stands for either. It's good to hear life-long Republicans (of which i don't consider myself ... my views — and voting habits — are ever-changing) on the same side as me. I hope it means change.

Fantastic site, thanks for that link!
I have friends who are going into the polls not knowing anything about any other race other than the presidential race (not even knowing who's running to fill Edwards's Senate seat!) I'll have to pass this along, because there are other important races this year.

As my proxy voters, it's their job to be informed, at the very least.

was he any more useless than Edwards has been here?

of the two major tickets, i put the Republicans light years ahead of the 'Crats, due to the fact i think Chaney is more qualified to run this country than Bush, Kerry, and Edwards combined. that said, i lean towards third party candidates. i voted for Nader last time, and possibly will this time. still undecided, though.

'Cause he's done such a great job the last four years?

Had I not been so afraid that what has happened would happen I would have voted for Nadar four years ago myself. This time....I just think he's crossed an ego line with me.

One other thing......

I'd love to take part in this poll, but being a CANADIAN kind of disqualifies me from taking part in it, as well as taking part in the election itself. However, if I was to vote, I'd vote for Kerry/Edwards because Kerry can skate and I think Seth Myers does a good impression of him.

The N&O has a page where you can type in your address and see who will be on your ballot. Very useful in researching for your votes!
http://capwiz.com/newsobserver/e4/address/?state=NC
They also give backgrounds and stances for most of them.
Vote Smart!

Thanks so much for that, Shell. I just got my absentee ballot in the mail and started to get a little overwhelmed with all the names I hadn't seen before.

its very easy when he intends to raise minimum wage by about 2 dollars... good for those earning it (so long as they dont get laid off) and bad for the consumers and employers.

for the longest time i didnt want to get politicalon the boards but.... well id rather not watch the economy fluster even more... everyone will end up demanding a 2 dollar an hour wage... Its not economically viable and will lead to further outsourcing of jobs...

Just a non-partisan reminder to get out and VOTE tomorrow.

My brother is VERY involved in a get out the vote effort in Guilford county and I spoke to him yesterday while he was taking a break until noon, though he got my message while stepping out of Church to check his voicemail in case there was anything important that came up relating to his campaign responsibilities.

I felt almost sheepish when talking to him and realizing how much he's invested in this campaign, body, soul, and wallet - so I thought I'd do my part in reminding everyone!

I also got a call from the National Party last night and talked to a great volunteer who was doing some last minute calling to encourage voting (and eventually got around to asking for $$$). I admire those folks that have really put in the time for a cause/candidate in which they believe. Kudos to them.

I had to laugh because I'm sure this guy was punch drunk from making calls, but he was full of spirit and called me "my new favorite American", (yeah, I gave money ).

Anyway - get out and VOTE!

As an addition to that, I doubt very much that many of us will encouter this, but I do expect some folks to encounter voter suppression. Here's some info on what your rights are and what to do if someone tries to interfere with your right to vote:
www.ourvote.com
www.mypollingplace.com

You can report problems at 1-800-MYVOTE1 or, if there is a really serious problem, 1-866-OUR-VOTE.

Two important things to note:
If you are in line before the polls close they are not allowed to make you leave when it's time to close. If you're in line, you get to vote.
If someone tries to question your right to vote and is holding up the line in the process, ask them to step aside and discuss the issue. Holding up the line so that people will get frustrated and leave is a tactic that's often used.

I'd allow extra time at the polls tomorrow. Mr SHC and I have done some canvassing here in Harnett county and we found a LOT of people who had never voted before (or in a long time) but were planning on voting this year. It was actually hard to find someone who said they did not plan to vote. The lines may be really long....but it's worth it!!

Not to sound arrogant, but I am highly confident that I'm more informed than the vast majority of voting-aged citizens in this country. Frankly, it's a slap in the face to me to see people not only not vote, but not care about the whole process in the first place. Many people don't care about the direction their country is heading in, and that's pitiful...

Normally this would be the time where I'd propose some sort of amendment that would give suffrage to everyone over 16...but then I go to school and see all the dimwits there...and I go to the smart school...:D

It's not arrogant of you, Turby. You probably ARE more informed. Then again, you're kind of special anyway. You're really sharp and conscientious. Not many people your age are so involved.

The greatest trouble I recognized while voting myself was that the voters had no idea who or what they were voting for. There were several bonds and amendments attached to the ballot and as I was reading over them (which was slowly and carefully because the legal jargon was thick), I began to think that anyone with less than a high school education and a stellar vocabulary would be utterly lost. I think it should be a legally enforced NECESSITY to enact some sort of non-partisan voter education before elections are held so people wont be overwhelmed, intimidated, or just turned off entirely by something they dont fully understand.

After reading your posts in the political thread, I definitely agree! Forget restricting by age, restrict by knowledge.. make people prove they have a clue and aren't voting because they like the name Marcia! The problem with that is that there is the possibility of discrimination.

I am going to start voting by absentee ballot so I can ensure I know every name on the ballot and make an informed decision, I hate leaving blanks and I won't blind vote.

Unless it's a conservative, Republican, party-line woman. There's nothing worse. IMO, they're traitors to their gender......but that's all based on what's important to me as a woman. But really, can't you just listen to Ann Coulter for about five minutes and see what's wrong with being a Republican female? I've never seen a more self-loathing person than her. I cannot believe Richard Burr is going to win. Ladies and gentlemen, we've just elected the next Jesse Helms. Pardon me while I gag.

I just always figure it's never a bad thing to have more women in leadership roles.

She actually said women shouldn't have the right to vote on Real Time the other night. She's a political pundit but she doesn't think she should be able to vote becuase she has no penis? WTF?

I did well this time. I went in knowing exactly who I was going to vote for for every single office.

Sorry, in the context of my post I assumed it was clear I was talking about conservative, party-line, republican females (and maybe I need to add the word "rabid" lol), not all republican females. I don't equate the two at all. And I don't think I made any statements as to what party and or gender all loons were exclusive to....not sure why you took it that way. I consider anyone who sticks only to their party lines to be loons and/or extremists, no matter what party or gender they are. We should think for ourselves and not just follow our preferred party's press releases. As for Ann Coulter, anyone who espouses the idea that their gender should not be allowed the right to vote simply for being their gender is clearly over a freakin' line, IMO.

It seems like every state is 52% Bush 47% Kerry, or equally as close.

Right now it looks like Kerry wins PA, and Bush wins FL, OH, and the election.

Sometimes I hate the people in this country.

Looks like Bowles is going to lose, too.

This is rather depressing.

Well hey, Easley was declared the winner, what, like 32 seconds after the polls were closed??

Bunning ended up doing some very weird stuff...pulled out of a debate at the last minute, said he had to go to DC to attend to important business (even though the Senate was not in session...)
And then he used a teleprompter in a debate...it really looked like Mongiardo might pull it out...but not to be.

What will all the talking heads fill their time with now that Kerry didn't prolong this while waiting for votes to be counted (not "recounted")? I'm sure Rush and Hannity and O'Reilly were ready to blast him over his "army of lawyers, blah, blah, blah".

I tried to be as educated as possible going into the booth today, but I have to admit somthing..... This is my rule of thumb if I'm tripped up on a race because I didn't do my homework: I vote for the woman. I just always figure it's never a bad thing to have more women in leadership roles.

So... shoot me... that's my thing.

that might cause a problem when the woman's name is Jay (see Sec. of State race)

Can you expound on this?

He's worked this hard for this long on his campaign and you think his concession speech is too long???? (I presume that's what you are talking about.)

In addition to having this be his last opportunity to speak from his heart/gut/whatever, it's also the last opportunity for 50-something million Americans to hear from their candidate and 1000s of volunteers to hear from the the man they worked tirelessly for.

I think we can all give him that much.

Guyute

couldn't agree more. not only should you "give" him that much...

even those that don't like him should give him HUGE props for conceeding, as he KNOWS it's for the good of the country. Nobody wants this going on for 2 weeks while Ohio tries to pull in all the provisional votes. and then, have it go to lawyers... it could literally be Christmas before we'd know who really wins.

We did that once already, remember? It shows the gaping holes in the system, and nobody wants that. Kerry sucked it up, and gave up. He deserves to be able to give a bow-out speech.

I agree E.. he worked on this campaign (he and JE) for years... that is a long time to commit to anything. I think he deserves his time "in the spotlight" to speak to the people that supported him and deserved to make sure that the election was handled properly, unlike in 2000.
