its a roller coaster for me... there are times when i want to wring his neck... like when he traded tanabe but i loved markov. then when he traded markov, but i like williams. He does somethings that are crazy at time and i admit i rant and rave about how crappy he is then but most of them have turned out pretty well.

I think JR is a pretty shrewed businessman. He can only find players who'll fit within the budget PK gives him, so it's not like he can sign just anybody. He's had a few clinkers along the way, but what GM hasn't.
I think having gotten the #1 No. American Skater (Staal & Ladd) two years in a row says something. (well... I guess it says, "Hey we finished in the toilet." but that's not what I'm talking about)
I don't think JR's a slouch at all. I wouldn't say he's the greatest out of the 30 GM's out there, but he's certainly not the worst.
edited to add:
like when he traded tanabe Oh good grief! Tanabe's a waste of skin. That trade for me was, "Hallelujah! Don't let the door slam ya on the a$$, budy!"

I think Shawn made some very valid points, but I would give props to Sheldon Ferguson & Co. for Staal and Ladd.
As far as JR is concerned, I'm not his biggest fan, partly due to four words...... Shanahan, Primeau, Coffey and Irbe. Too much time and money was wasted on these guys.
The first three didn't want to play for us and the third gave a "play me or trade me" ultimatum that lead to dissention in the dressing room and a year long drama that ended up with no #1 goalie.
Maybe a little more due diligence on JR's part, at times, would have brought players like Brind'Amour and Williams into the fold rather than having the fans and the franchise cater to talent who'd rather be anywhere else but wearing the Sightless Eye.
Also, maybe not hanging on to players too long before trading them (thus making their trade value go down) would have lead to better returns on some of the trades he has made (See: Bob Boughner & Sami Kapanen). Trades for prospects are always good, but when they are players drafted in later rounds, or just 3rd round picks, they really don't help the team NOW. Is it too much to ask that we get a player in return that can be put right into the lineup?
Another thing he could do better is be a bit more willing to reward those players who do want to stay and play for the Hurricanes (See: Sean Hill & Kevin Weekes) rather than letting them sign elsewhere and lose them outright.
I guess my bottom line is I've seen this team do enough "building for the future" and while it can be said that some of the moves JR has made have really helped the squad, I'm tired of "waiting until next year". We were in the SCF and followed that up the "next year" by finishing dead last? The holes made by some of the players who left or been moved aren't really filled right away or ever filled again with JR running the show, and frankly that bothers me.

I think it's easy for me to sit in my armchair, watch the Canes on TV, assume I know everything that is going on and then come up with a long list of gripes about JR. I don't have any idea what's going on behind the scenes so I really don't think I can ever know whether certain decisions were really bad or not. He's done some things I've hated and some things I've loved. Hindsight is 20/20, though, so I really think it's dificult for me to even answer that question. In looking at his moves I now know things that he couldn't have known then. It's hard to separate that.
I also think that there is nothing to criticize overall about his decision to bring Irbe here. Yes, it ended badly but how can you focus on the last bad year or two and ignore the rest of his tenure here? Irbe was here, what, 6 seasons? The majority of those seasons were very good and most folks would argue that encompasses some of the best seasons in this franchise's history. He's the winningest goalie in this franchise's history. If JR can bring up 4 good years for every 2 bad ones I think he's doing a pretty good job.
Overall, I think he has an extremely hard job that I think he does pretty well. Were he a swami maybe he'd have done his job better but let's face it, there aren't many of those walking around looking for NHL jobs.

There are alot of variables that he has to deal with when making decisions. He has financial restraints, fan satisfaction, GOP looking down on him, and not to mention trying to put a good product on the ice. I think he's done an exceptional job working with what he has.
Sure, he's had some bad decisions. He traded Marek Malik and Darren Langdon for what amounted to a 6-4 win vs Detroit and Allan Rourke...
But look at other great transactions he has had. Willis for Weekes turned out to be a fantastic trade for us...Tanabe for Williams, with some draft picks mixed up in there, turned out to be a fantastic deal for us. In effect, we got KAdams, Bret Hedican, and Martin Gerber for Sandis Ozolinsh and Byron Richie. We got our starting goalie, our next captain, and the leader of our defense for comparitively very little, and that's an awesome trade for us.
Trades aside, he's done very well in this market with what he's had to work with. He's ran the team from top to bottom since the move, and done as good a job as anyone could making sure that Hockey stays and succeeds here. What GM could have done better?
Now I'm not saying that he's perfect or that he hasn't had some foul-ups along the way, but he's served the team very well in his time here. There is a reason why he was named GM of the Year 2 years ago....because he's very good at what he does. He has some good people behind him, too, but spearheading the effort of running the team, he's done an exceptional job.
This is the challenge: who could have done better than JR, and what would they have done?

Well, i personally dislike Jim Rutherford. He does some trades very nocives to the Hurricanes present/ future, like the trade that sent Pronger to St. Louis in exchange of Shanahan. Pronger won a Hart in 2000, and Shanny only stayed 2 years in the Whalers franchise. But sometimes he does genial trades, like the trade with the Ducks. But i think JR done more bad trades than good trades.

Pronger didn't want to be (t)here, and wouldn't have developed as he did in the Whale's system of play. Shanahan definitely didn't want to be (t)here, and honestly, I'm glad he wasn't a Cane.

I don't know if Pronger wanted to be here or not, but I agree he would not be the player he is today had he not been traded. That trade really put Pronger into a situation and a team where he fit very well. Shanahan whined to get out and I'm very glad he's gone.
You can't find a GM who doesn't have a "one that got away" story.
I think JR does a good job. SHC said it very well, thank you ;)

But after another couple trades, Shanny became Brind'Amour.
How about these began with / ended with chains...
Nolan Pratt -> Gerber, Hedican, K Adams
Mark Janssens -> Vrbata, Vasicek
There have been a few other similar chains. In any case, JR be doing nicely in my book.

I still have not forgiven him for trading Markov. Other than that, I think he truly tried to do right by keeping the CUP running team together. The fact that the team fell on their face was not his fault. Yes, he should not have sent Malik to the Canucks, but the Canes were dying way before that.

I think JR has a goalie addiction but except for a couple of brain spasms (Markov, Hill) I think he does a reasonable job given the constraints I"m sure he has. He does tend to play his cards close to the vest so we have no idea whats going on in that little flat head.
**** Rio - waving matches around at passers by does not count as smoking.
