PAINTING THE ICE ORANGE
K-Wings and KVCC Start a New Tradition
10/05/04

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announces that their first-ever Orange Ice Game will be Saturday, October 30th at 7:30pm when they host the Muskegon Fury.

Besides the Orange Ice another tradition will begin, as the K-Wings along with Kalamazoo Valley Community College will launch a brand new scholarship fund.

During the game, the K-Wings will be wearing special Halloween themed jerseys. Those jerseys will be auctioned off after the game, with the proceeds going to the new scholarship fund.

“Wings Stadium and the K-Wings have always done what we can to promote education,” said Vice President/General Manager Paul L. Pickard. “In the past, our focus has been at the elementary and high school level; however, we felt now was the time to expand to help those looking to further their education at the highest level.”

Fittingly Steve Doherty, who worked for the K-Wings for 22 seasons and was responsible for the World Famous Green Ice Game, KVCC’S Director of Development will be involved in the K-Wings newest colored ice tradition.

“The KVCC Foundation is excited to be working with the K-Wings in establishing this new scholarship fund,” said Steve Doherty. “This relationship between the K-Wings and KVCC will be one that will benefit the entire community.”

The game will be sponsored by KVCC, WWMT, WRKR, WKFR and Pepsi. In fact, the first 1,000 fans through the doors will receive a voucher for a FREE bottle of Pepsi’s newest product, Mountain Dew “Pitch Black”, which will be redeemed when fans leave the game.

The Orange Ice Game, which is in celebration of Halloween, will feature a lot of Halloween type of activities. The contest will also be the first regular season meeting between the K-Wings and the defending Colonial Cup Champions.

“Our fans were surveyed during the season and creating a special colored ice Halloween game is what they requested, so we felt it our responsibility to answer their request,” said Pickard. “There has always been some mystique about our colored ice games and over the years it has become our special niche.

Through the decades, the Kalamazoo Wings have created a buzz around the sporting community with the creation of the “World Famous” Fifth-Third Bank St. Patrick’s Day Green Ice Game, New Year’s Eve Bash, and the Pink Ice Game.

The “World Famous” Fifth-Third Bank St. Patrick’s Day Green Ice Game will be heading into its 24th year. Since debuting in 1982, the Green Ice Game has been featured in the national media on ESPN and USA Today.

For the past two years the fastest growing tradition in Kalamazoo has been the New Year’s Eve Bash. This game features a post-game celebration, which includes a dance in The Annex and public skating in Wings Stadium. The combined event gives families the unique opportunity to kick off the New Year away from home with a family friendly event.

Since the recreation of the Pink Ice Game during the 2000-01 season, the K-Wings have experience bigger crowds for the game that has become a Valentine’s Night classic. This past season, the K-Wings defeated the Richmond River Dogs 2-1 in front of a standing room only crowd of 5,402.

Season and Individual Game Tickets for the 2004-05 season of Kalamazoo Wings hockey are currently on sale at the Wings Stadium Box Office. Box Office hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday’s from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Fans can either stop by during regular business hours or call (269) 345-5101.

The K-Wings will drop the puck on the 2004-2005 regular season on October 15th, when the K-Wings travel to Frasier, Michigan to play in the inaugural game of the Motor City Mechanics.

For more information about the K-Wings newest tradition, please contact Director of Public Relations/Broadcaster Mike Modugno at (269) 349-9772, extension 220.

I think it would be so distracting for fans and players.

But then again, the blue turf at Boise State U.'s football stadium is really cool!

That'd be pretty cool for the first few minutes, but it'd get old really quick.

I'm a purist as well, but I also understand the need to do these things to bring in atypical fans. We're not going to make it just with us diehards Pete. Orange ice is a good idea. Then again, I liked the FOX robots. (-;
