Mods- I didn't really know where the heck to put this and we're kind of in a unique situation here- but I thought some of the gang would be interested in catching some College hockey in the next few months. I caught Maine vs. North Dakota game on Friday night (Maine won in OT on a PENALTY SHOT) and got to see the Golden Gophers of Minnesota play the National Champs Denver; Very entertaining stuff and some familiar names playing in college hockey.....

U. of Minn will broadcast 32 of the teams games on Fox Sports North-(they may add more now that the Wild are playing, but the standard for them is 32 games) and CSTV (College Sports TV) will broadcast TGI Hockey every Friday night with 'marquee' teams of college hockey playing each week. Next week it is Michigan v North Dakota. (Ladies, NYR draftee, and cutie, Al Montoya is still playing for the Wolverines ;)

It's not the NHL..... but hey, I think we can all appreciate the raucous atmosphere that is college hockey, just as we can apprecaite ACC everything around here.... :spin: Quick tidbit, the Maine Blackbears play in a fairly old arena on campus, they're about to move into a state of the art facility, but for now, each team comes out on to the ice from THE STANDS. The locker rooms are apparently above level- they come out and then they descend onto the ice. Right past the fans and they high five and all that stuff. Very cool. Hall of Fame broadcaster Doc Emerick of the NJ Devils broadcast team and Billy Jaffe (color man, ATL Thrashers) called the Maine v ND game & Mike Euruzione (sp?) was the roving reporter/locker room guy; I expect that we'll see a rotation of NHL broadcasters on CSTV. The guys doing the Minnesota game, not all that great... but ok....

So if you're pining away for Hockey Night in Canada, or some entertaining hockey- I highly recommend checking these channels out if you've got the sports package on DirecTV or your cable channel......

Here's a blurb below from INCH (Inside College Hockey) on the lockout and a 'welcome' to the fans, I thought folks would find interesting..

Postcard: Welcome, NHL Fans

Greetings, NHL fans, and welcome. We’ve been expecting you.

Settle in and enjoy our game. We’ll make room for you. Heck, from the sounds of it there are so few of you out there we could probably fit you all in the penalty boxes.

In truth, most of us who follow college hockey are NHL fans as well, whether it be supporters of our hometown teams or collegians who we have sent off to the pros – even those who left a year or two earlier than we would have liked.

So we’re a bit distraught about this lockout as well, although we know that better days lie ahead. Specifically, October 3, when the puck drops between Maine and Vermont and the college hockey season begins.

There are a few things you should keep in mind before we get started. First, we don’t have a red line. Actually, we do have a red line, but it’s about as useful as a trophy case at the Capitals’ MCI Center. We use it for icing, but not two-line passes, which you’ll quickly see can open up the game.

That reminds us. Don’t be surprised if teams come out with playoff-like intensity, and the games in October are as exciting as those in March. With only 40 games, and just two each week, each one matters. This is no place for sleepwalkers, which is why we sent Thomas Vanek to the NHL.

You probably won’t see our hidden gem on ESPN, at least until the Frozen Four, but it’s not hard to find. We’ve got 58 teams in Division I, spread across the country. With the right satellite dish, you can catch several games every Friday or Saturday night – and occasionally, here at INCH we’ll walk you through our efforts to watch each one.

We’ll do our best to make you feel welcome over the next few weeks, months or years as this lockout drags on. We’ll teach you the proper pronunciation of “Sieve!” and alternate lyrics to “Give My Regards to Broadway.” We’ll introduce you to the next Martin St. Louis and the first Jimmy Howard. We’ll give you the history of the Gold Pan, the Beanpot, the Hobey Baker, and tell you how Red Berenson wore maize and blue before he became a Blue.

And when it’s all said and done, we’ll hold nothing against you if you return to the NHL. But we won’t be surprised one bit if you decide to stick around.

Sincerely,
Inside College Hockey

Anyone have the Fox Sports package from TimeWarner Cable? Anyone know the cost?

I know you've got a dish SoCal, but I think TWC does package up a few regional sports networks too.

This is definitely an alternative! Thanks for starting the thread! :)

nccanes- I had someone pm me and ask if I knew what the costs were at TWC, but I told him no, since I have DirecTV; I just looked to see what they offered and $$$- I deciphered all of their packages and add on's and I think it's $2.95; I didn't see MSG or NESN (for AHL games) or any of those channels, but on the 'digital sports' pack you'd get these:

TWC Digital Sports Packages

Fox College Sports Atlantic

Fox College Sports Central

Fox College Sports Pacific

NBA TV

The Tennis Channel

Fuel

I'm assuming you'd get the regional links to the EAST/MIDWEST/WEST colleges and you'd be able to catch some of the games that make it to TV. They may have more than this, but I wasn't seeing it....... It's better than nothing and at this point - uh, 3 days before what would have been the start of the season, I'm desparate. :eek2: Guess it's gonna be a long winter for me eh?

The U. of Maine fightsong and the Minnesota 'skating' cheerleaders are doing instant replays in my head so I better get back to work (LOL) college hockey- very viable alternative.....

I went to a Colorado College game earlier this year and it is a great atmosphere. I had a great time at that game. They weren't playing yet this season when I was in Colorado Springs a couple of weeks ago so I didn't get a live hockey fix

I like the INCH site. They have some fun things posted there. I'll have to check out the TWC college sports package too. Any port in a storm ;)

For any Michigan fans, I'd be happy to update the Wolverines as their season goes along. We just did our hockey preview section for The Wolverine, the magazine I work on here in Durham. Michigan started the season ranked No. 1, but lost 4-2 to Northwestern. They bounced back to trounce Boston U. 7-2.

If I had to guess, I'd say L.A. Kings 2003 first-round draft pick Jeff Tambellini will bounce back from his sophomore slump and be the team's leading scorer, like in 2002 as a frosh.

Just to let everyone know, ncstatehockey.org has a game listed at the Reczone for this Friday at 7:30 vs. Duke. I noticed this wasn't listed on the Reczone's website, so I called to verify and was told (rather brusquely, I might add) that "it's not happening".

I was hoping to try and catch a 'local' college hockey game, but hey, if you have CSTV, you can't beat TGI-Hockey on Friday nights (they show Saturday games also, but they really do it up on Fridays, very fun) here's this week's matchup-

CSTV Friday Night Hockey TV Schedule

Oct. 29 N. Dakota at Boston Coll. 8:00 p.m. ET
Oct. 30 Quinnipiac at Dartmouth 7:00 p.m. ET

Boston College has Patrick Eaves- who was on the World Jr. Championship team with Danny Richmond- and there's a kid named Stephen Gionta whom I'm guessing is Brian's brother(LOL)..... And the Fighting Sioux of ND also have a star type line up- Jordan Parise is Zach's brother and the goalie- 2003 LA Kings draft pick, Brady Murray is Coach Andy Murray's son, and Drew Stafford was Buffalo's #1 draft pick this past June and also on the World Jr Gold Medal team. and Travis Zajac was NJ Devils #1 pick (20th overall) in June as well..... I've seen a couple of the ND games- and they're fun to watch.

Just a few options for those lookin' for a hockey fix............................ ;)

nccanes- I had someone pm me and ask if I knew what the costs were at TWC, but I told him no, since I have DirecTV; I just looked to see what they offered and $$$- I deciphered all of their packages and add on's and I think it's $2.95; I didn't see MSG or NESN (for AHL games) or any of those channels, but on the 'digital sports' pack you'd get these:

TWC Digital Sports Packages

Fox College Sports Atlantic

Fox College Sports Central

Fox College Sports Pacific

NBA TV

The Tennis Channel

Tonight I FINALLY remembered to call and order this. At one of the commercial break during the "classic Canes game", I switched over to find college hockey on both Fox CS Pacific and Central (Canadian Football was on the Atlantic channel). One game was Wisconsin/Denver Univ and the other was Minn/Minn St. I was happy already (even though we didn't watch much of it tonight).

For about $36/year, it's way less than CI would cost you and probably as much as we spend at one Canes game on concessions. Definitely worth it - and I haven't even seen the skating cheerleaders yet!

Fandragon & I attended the State vs. Liberty game tonight at the Reczone. Sure was nice to see some hockey again!! Hadn't realized how much in withdrawal I was until the puck dropped!

College hockey is a lot different than what I'm used to watching from the Canes. Much faster paced and alot more wide open.

State opened the scoring with an early goal, but then Liberty took over. They scored six unanswered goals before left after the second period. State seems to have a decent team, but Liberty outplayed them most of the game. Liberty has a very good team. Very disiplined, good puck handlers. Their goalie, in particular, was very good. Reminded me of Brodeur at times. Good skater with good lateral movement. Wouldn't surprise me if he makes a name for himself in the minors or even the NHL one day.

Some advice if you attend a game at the Reczone: dress warmly (it's very cold), wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared to stand for the game. There was quite a crowd tonight with most of the people standing around the glass. Unfortunately, this prevented the people in the benches from seeing the game. Not totally a bad thing, though, cause those benches weren't very comfortable!

State plays again next Friday & Saturday. If you're jonesing for a hockey fix, I'd head out there. Besides, it's only five bucks, so why not?

Getting scored on a lot is one thing, but I can't count the number of times State let someone wander around the zone without getting picked up or bodied, and most of the goals were on cupcake passes across the front that were just too much for State's goalie to cover laterally.

Officiating was awful both ways, but that's how it goes.

BOSTON -- Beanpot University. Or Bourque University. Take your pick.

If the naming rights to the FleetCenter can be auctioned off for charity on ebay, then what's the big deal with changing the name of a certain Green Line university over on Commonwealth Ave.?

After all, Boston University captured its 26th Beanpot championship on Monday night with a 3-2 overtime win against Northeastern in the 53rd renewal of the city hockey tournament.

As if the Terriers hadn't already found every type of imaginable hero in their impressive run of Beanpot wins, enter Chris Bourque, the son of Hockey Hall of Famer and Boston legend Ray Bourque.

You can't make this stuff up.

All the 19-year-old freshman did against the Huskies was take advantage of some good fortune. Senior defenseman Bryan Miller had pushed a second-chance shot off the left post and it rebounded into the slot when a fortuitous Bourque arrived on the scene and backhanded the puck past sprawling NU goaltender Keni Gibson at 14:10 of the extra session.

"I just saw the puck sitting there and I just put it in," was Bourque's simple explanation of his heroics.

Game winner. MVP. Perfect at the Beanpot. Just another day's work for the Topsfield, Mass. native.

No matter what he does in the rest of his career at BU, or even at the next level, Bourque will forever be a part of the Boston sports landscape -- of which the Beanpot plays a big role.

"The Beanpot is one of the reasons I came to Boston University," Bourque said. "It was an unbelievable experience in my first two games. We had fun out there, we wanted to win it for the seniors and that's what we did."

The game winner was Bourque's seventh goal in a rookie season that has seen its share of growing, and physical pains. A knee injury has slowed him down this year, and it limited his time and effectiveness in the Beanpot opener a week earlier against Boston College.

Dressed in a brown suit, black shirt and tan tie, Bourque arrived at the postgame press conference carrying a bag of ice for his still sore knee and the Beanpot trophy -- which he placed next to Miller.

Bourque was also sporting what he called his Beanpot beard, which in truth was a long way from being anything that actually resembled facial growth.

But none of that mattered because the understated and undersized Bourque (5-foot-9, 178 pounds) was still riding high from his first Beanpot playing experience.

"It was everything I thought it would be," he said. "The place was rocking, our fans were great and we won. That's the biggest plus, that we won."

Even if their coach wasn't convinced they necessarily deserved it.

"I think we really dodged a bullet tonight," BU's Jack Parker said. "For 60 minutes we got outplayed. And we got outplayed because we were trying not to lose. And Northeastern deserved a better fate. They had a hell of a game.

"Chris getting the game-winning goal is certainly a big boost for him and his confidence. I was real happy for Chris because he was getting frustrated that he wasn't getting many chances."

All he needed was one.

And that one sent the BU senior class away with three Beanpot titles in the last four years -- not to mention nine in the last 11, but who's counting. The lone miss was last year's 2-1 loss at the hands of Boston College.

"It seems like the Beanpot Championship belongs to BU," Miller said. "And now it's back where it belongs."

Thanks to Chris Bourque, freshman forward at Beanpot U.

BOSTON -- Beanpot University. Or Bourque University. Take your pick.

If the naming rights to the FleetCenter can be auctioned off for charity on ebay, then what's the big deal with changing the name of a certain Green Line university over on Commonwealth Ave.?

After all, Boston University captured its 26th Beanpot championship on Monday night with a 3-2 overtime win against Northeastern in the 53rd renewal of the city hockey tournament.

what an amazing ending that was, huh? I feel bad for Bryan Miller, though ... he not only went end to end with it, but also got the intial rebound that left Bourque with an easy finish. Miller made a helluva play, but it's all Swedish Chef ...

having been part of beanpot for 20 years there is nothing like it, nothing. The pros wish they had the electricity, the passion, the bands, the noise that this tournament generates. The flora, the fauna..... it is the social event of the winter season. Maybe the closest thing to it was calgary's stanley cup run last year.

A real good article to check out is on www.uscho.com comparing the mighty BU terriers (small dogs bite) to the Yankees (booooooo) and the Northeastern Huskies to the Red Sox.

GO BU :D

I became captivated by Phil Kessel during the WJC's and have been keeping up with him since- the folks at the U. of Minnesota must be over the moon...... Must of been a toughie for the kid since he's from Wisconsin and all......
Good news for all who have the FoxSportsnet package- U. of Minn broadcasts almost all of their games on Fox Sports N/Minnesota- that'll be something to look forward to next year. This kid has alot of promise....

'U' lands top recruit Kessel

The Gophers men's hockey team landed one of the highest-profile recruits in the program's history on Friday when it received a verbal commitment from Phil Kessel.

Kessel, currently playing for the United States National Under-18 team, is considered one of the best talents to ever come out of the U.S. He chose the Gophers over his hometown school, the University of Wisconsin. Kessel said it simply came down to choosing the school he felt was the best fit for him. He informed Gophers coach Don Lucia and Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves of his decision in phone calls Thursday night.

"It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make," the 17-year-old Kessel said.

Kessel said Minnesota's offensive style played a a role in his decision, as did the fact that two of his best friends, Minnesotans Ryan Stoa and Jeff Frazee, also will play for the Gophers next season.

Thanks Socal. I'm not a DirectTV person, but I can catch some games on the FSN Midwest and West. Looks like at least some of the early rounds of the tourney will be on ESPN2 (along with the semis/finals).

So, how many teams make the tourney for hockey?

Nevermind - I clicked another link from the one you posted and see tht it's 16. :)

not always true. Denver is going to Massachusetts to play and they are a #1. my CC boys are closer to home than that with their #1 seeding. I think that was a bit controversial. I hope I get to see some of the rounds before the Frozen Four. What is ESPNU? I hate ESPN and I'm sure they are going to screw me out of seeing CC play

Got to see the NCAA Selection Show for the Hockey Tourney-Buccigross and Panger hosting it was on the Deuce yesterday while I was at church, but I TiVo'd it..... great matchups, now that I've got a handle on this college hockey thing, it'll be fun.....

What is ESPNU?

TC- it's the newest ESPN channel, it's ESPN's attempt to compete with College Sports TV (CSTV) - I get it on channel 609 on DirecTV, but from what I understand, if you get the 4 others- ESPN, 2, Classic and ESPNews, you get ESPNU- I'm assuming that TWC has it avail, but I could be wrong. I did a quick check through advanced days programming on TiVo, and ALL of the games are on ESPNU........ I was surprised by all of the games being shown over the weekend. NESN had wall to wall college hockey on Friday night..... Great semi-final and finals games for the various league championships.... and very entertaining....

I'm liking the matchups for the 16 teams going in. This should be fun.

according to the sports pages out here, ESPN may allow local cable operators/companies whatever the hell they call themselves, to broadcast the local games in their home areas so folks in the midwest/west may see some of the east/northeast regional matchups.

FOX sports and CN8 are planning on broadcasting at least one regional game this coming weekend from all regions. Should be interesting.

The BU/UND, Wisconsin/Michigan and UMaine/MN games are the ones I want to see. UNH/Harvard should be good too - fast and over in less than an hour! Both teams skate like the wind, high offense, super solid goaltending and minimal penalties. UNH games have always been one fo the shorter games on the hockey east schedule because they tend to play clean.

I am going to watch the glut of basketball riches tonight. Too late now to break a lifetime habit! I'll check in on the college hockey though. No ESPNU for me (thanks, TWC) and no CC on any channel I get. Hopefully they will continue to win and I'll get a chance to see them.

I'm at home and watching the first matchup- Mercyhurst College v the Boston College Eagles- Gary Thorne & Bill Clement are calling the game- seeing how they don't have anything else to do  I'm sure they're glad they get to call some college hockey- they appear giddy......

The Mercyhurst v BC matchup is supposed to be the David v Goliath matchup- and it appears David is hangin' in there- 2 on 1 just after the puck drops and Mercyhurst scores............. Don't ya love college sports? Anything can HAPPPEN. ;)

TC- I'll update ya on CC.......

No Problem TC... So Far- CC was looking strong- with a minute left in the 2nd period Colgate scores making it 4-3 (Panger is calling the game with Eric Friede from NESN) and the Mercyhurst/BC matchup is HIGHLY entertaining- BC leading 5-4, and Mercyhurst truly hanging in there!

Looking forward to the BU v North Dakota matchup...... and the Michigan v. Wisconsin matchup at 8:30..... As you can see, I'm giddy.... ;) I'll post finals later......

I see that the 6-5 score held up for my boys and they take on Michigan this afternoon. That Sterling kid is a great hockey player.

while it sounds as if this wasn't his best game, Curtis McElhinney is a very good goalie.

BC and ND are going to be a great matchup- Too Bad for Jimmy Howard and Maine- they just lost to Minnesota in OT 1-0. The Blackbears can't seem to score for him. Don't know what happened to BU??? Holy Cow they were just not themselves, but credit Jordan Parise and Drew Stafford and the rest of the Fighting Sioux, they're darn good. I think Wisconsin was just over matched- I've been watching ND all season, and taking for granted how good they are but they dominated last night.

Enjoying the CC Michigan game right now- Jeff Tambellini is a stud. The Kings have got to know what a great 'find' they got in that kid. Heck, watch college hockey and there are kids all over who've been drafted and will do their NHL clubs proud once they graduate/move on. He is just all over the place. And TC- Panger's giving mad props to your boy Sterling. He is a real dazzler and a special player for sure. Looking forward to the games tonight- especially the BC/ND matchup.....The score now is 2-0 TC, hate to tell ya, but it's Michigan's 2....... :eek2: Lots of hockey to be played though..... 4:34 left in the 1st.

CC heading to Frozen Four
With a 4-3 come-from-behind victory that will go down in history as one of Colorado College’s greatest of all time, the Tigers removed an old monkey from their backs and advanced to the Frozen Four for the first time since 1997. CC overcame a 3-0 University of Michigan lead on Saturday, rallying for a pair of goals in the second period then adding two more in the third, to defeat the Wolverines in the Midwest Regional championship game at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. Tournament MVP Trevor Frischmon scored the game winner, his second tally of the game, with 9:54 left in regulation after linemate Joey Crabb had tied things up at 4:24 of the final frame. Curtis McElhinney finished with 27 saves, stopping everything that came his way after UM’s third goal slid past him off a teammate early in the second period. Frischmon’s first red lighter, a shorthanded effort at 15:27 of the middle session, pulled the Tigers to within 3-2 after Marty Sertich got CC on the scoreboard with a five-on-three power-play goal at 4:13 of the period. :spin:

What a great College Hockey Tournament weekend! OMG- that CC comeback has got to go down as a 'great' - I thought they were toast the way Tambellini and Michigan were rollin' - I think Big Al Montoya was not at his best and once again, I'm guessing people who question his high draft pick status are gonna question some more. But big kudos to CC, they played some gutty hockey. I was just sitting there shaking my head the way they chipped away at Michigan. BU and BC went belly up, and poor Wisconsin, I think they were just way in over their head.

Between trying to listen to the Monsters on the web, Hubby watching the London Knights vs the Guelph Storm on a webcast and then Wilkes Barre vs Providence on that B2 Networks webcast, and all of these games on ESPNU we watched a TON of hockey this weekend, and damn, it was fun. ;)

So last night I switch to this game being rebroadcast on C-SET. Knowing that they won 4-3 and at this point were down by two, I took a wild guess (hadn't read the whole post here, merely that they won in a come from behind fashion) and said "I bet they score a shortie" when Mich went on the PP. Damn if they didn't. Mr. NCCanes said "did you already watch this?" and I said "nope". ;)

That shortie was a beaut too E- LOL on your story :D

Side note and my final blab on about the College Hockey tourney- yesterday's early game was the New Hampshire Blackbears v Denver U. Pioneers- called by Dave Ryan and Melrose- Melrose was Melrose as I noted in the earlier rounds- but this story is CLASSIC Melrose

Sooo, about midway into the game, I can't remember exactly but it was near the 10 minute mark in the second period- a penalty shot is called -Daniel Winnik of NH is hauled down on a glorious scoring chance and he gets a go of it- So they're buildin' it up, the refs giving the goalie, Peter Mannino instructions in his ear, then goes over to Winnik for final instructions, and of course both goalies were doing really well at this time, and the score is 1-1 and Melrose and Ryan are going on about how well Mannino has done, and how the penalty shot is the 'most exciting play in all of sports' etc., and Ryan asks Melrose- so how whatta think, will he stop him? And Melrose bites on this and says- "He's been on fire, I think he's going to stop him- he's been so, solid out there, today I just don't see him getting anything past Mannino" so hub looks at me- and I'm sitting there catching flies and laughing uncontrollably, and hub says, "so Melrose now has premonitions? he can predict outcomes?????    " (and me being the smartass that I can be, I say back to hub- well then he shoulda completely known we weren't playing NHL hockey and he should've told us! )

We then did the annoying couple thing and said, "well, now that Melrose has opened his mouth, that kids gonna score" because as you all know, that when Melrose makes predictions (read:2002 SC Playoffs when he decided the Canes were too lowly to even make a predicition on  and then had to eat crow when we did what we did) and sure enough the kid Winnik makes this move up the ice and just completely out waits Mannino on this insane fake and roofs it. 2-1 Blackbears - just like that.... :eek2: Hubby and I were literally rolling on the living room floor cracking up. It couldn't go any other way!

It was funny, because even though it was college hockey, not NHL- here's Melrose, yapping like it was Colorado v Det or whatever flavor of the month catches his fancy and he's spouting off in typical Melrose fashion - in other words, he was wrong- so thoroughly enjoyable just watching the matchups, and trying to figure out who was gonna win..... It was good to hear Melrose in any event.

:eek2: Hubby and I were literally rolling on the living room floor cracking up. best?part of those college games this past weekend was hearing Thorne/Clement and Mullet Melrose back on the air. I kept hearing the ESPN theme in my mind when Bill and GAry were on the air. Maybe next year! Afer seeing UND, I am thinking they may take it. But I hear Denver is also strong. In honor of the 2 UND alumns with the lcokmonsters, go Sioux! Oh can I tell youhow many times I was yelling "Go Sioux!" sat night when COmmodore was in the sin bin or near us with faceoffs? :D

Watching my Tivo'd Colorado College vs Denver University game- Bill, Gary and Panger are calling the game-(with Erin Andrews in the stands- coulda been a playoff NHL game- ) DU is leading 4-1. The game started at 2pm- I got home later so I Tivo'd it. Not sure if CC can pull out another comeback.....

But the big game for everyone who's interested is ND Fighting Sioux v Minnesota @ 7pm on the Deuce.

Finals are on this weekend. Should be good stuff no matter who the winners are.....

Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Denver made sure the biggest celebration was the last one.

Freshman Paul Stastny scored two goals and Peter Mannino made them stand up with an almost flawless performance in goal to help Denver successfully defend its national title with a 4-1 victory over North Dakota on Saturday night.
After coach George Gwozdecky won his 400th game the last time Denver beat North Dakota, last month in the conference semifinals, he stopped the celebration to address his team.

"I told them, 'Thank you very much. But it sure would be a lot sweeter to celebrate after No. 405,'" Gwozdecky said.

It was the seventh national title for Denver (32-9-2), which was ranked No. 1 for most of the season.

Stastny, the son of Hall of Famer Peter Stastny, also had an assist on Gabe Gauthier's empty-netter. Jeff Drummond scored the Pioneers' first goal, Kevin Ulanski had two assists and Gauthier had an assist to go with his 26th goal of the year.

Mannino, who was selected the most outstanding player of the Frozen Four, had a career-high 44 saves two nights after stopping 41 shots in a 6-2 win over Colorado College in the semifinals.

"My team allowed me to see the puck," Mannino said. "When there were rebounds, they cleaned them right away. I just wanted to keep them (the Fighting Sioux) off the board, and it worked out."

With the score tied 1-1 midway through the second period, Denver scored on a power play. The Pioneers had six power-play goals in their win in the semis after scoring on just three of their 45 power-play chances leading into the Frozen Four.

Ulanski's hard slap shot from the top of the right circle sliced through heavy traffic in the slot and appeared to glance off Stastny's stick. Stastny redirected it high over the right shoulder of goaltender Jordan Parise, who could do nothing but watch the puck settle into the net.

Only it didn't glance off Stastny's stick.

"It hit me right in the butt," he said with a laugh.

Stastny added his 17th goal in the third period to give Mannino and the Pioneers' defense a cushion.

Again on the power play, defenseman Carle faked a defender to the ice and then sidestepped him, throwing a blind pass back to the right where Stastny converted with a hard one-timer.

"That was the second time that Matty had danced past a defender in the game," Stastny said. "He didn't even look. He just threw it right onto my tape."

Mannino did the rest. The Fighting Sioux (25-15-5) pulled their goalie for a man advantage for most of the last two minutes but couldn't get the puck past him.

He ran his record to 3-0-0 in NCAA play and has been at his best when the games mean the most, surrendering just five goals in his last six games.

"He made an awful lot of good saves," said rookie North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol, who led his team to the title game despite a fifth-place finish in the league. "That's one factor you can't control in a hockey game -- how the guy wearing the pads at the other end is going to play."

Denver improved to 7-2 in NCAA title games while sweeping all four meetings with the Fighting Sioux this season. The Pioneers' seventh title tied them with North Dakota for second place behind Michigan's nine.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association -- which became the first conference to have all the NCAA semifinalists -- has produced the last four national champions.

Denver, 26-1-1 this year when scoring first, used a fluky goal to open the scoring.

Ulanski found a loose puck on his stick as he skated past the goal line. Almost as an afterthought, he threw the puck at the crease and it ricocheted off the left skate of North Dakota defenseman Matt Smaby. Drummond was there to jam it in.

Smaby hung his head when the goal light went on, while the Pioneers' fans danced and sang in celebration.

"They got the bounces," North Dakota defenseman Matt Greene said. "Tonight just wasn't our night."

The Fighting Sioux tied it when defenseman Nick Fuher took a soft shot from the point and teammate Travis Zajac reached out with his stick and redirected the puck -- with his back to the goal -- and the puck slipped between Mannino's leg pads.

Parise, the son of former NHL star J.P. Parise, was at his best late in the second period, stopping five shots on one Denver power play.

and the best part of the return of Melrose (sort of)? the return of the zoot suit! When is someone going to roast Barry for his wardrobe selection, not just the hair?

I swear UND/ or Denver could beat springfield, utah, maybe albany.... and another reason why I love the college game.... no freakin red line! Much quicker offense, and people actually have to backcheck. Novel concept being a complete player.
